Leo Abrahams is an English musician, composer and producer. He attended The Royal Academy of Music before starting his music as the lead guitarist with Imogen Heap. He has collaborated with Brian Eno, Katie Melua, Ed Harcourt, Jarvis Cocker, Chris Difford, Carl Barat, Regina Spektor, John Hopkins and Paul Simon to name a few. He has released five studio albums which are ambient soundscapes with complex arrangements. He has co-written and arranged film soundtracks including Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones and Steve McQueen's Hunger. To be honest, I could name another hundred artists and projects but lets just say he can play piano, guitar, guitarette, bass, hurdy gurdy, omnichord and something called the guitorgan? In this episode, Leo is happy to be tired and frustrated in order to have something to talk about. Stories include his younger self sleeping on a 45 degree angle ramp outside a flat he couldn't get into, and his big affection for hotel beds. Hosted on Acast. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've put together the drummers from two of the UK's biggest bands in recent memory: Dave Rowntree and Philip Selway. Rowntree came to fame with Blur, one of the original Britpop bands of the early 1990s. I probably don't need to give you much biography on Blur, but in the band's couple of long hiatuses, Rowntree has lived about a dozen lives. He's been an amateur pilot, a professional lawyer, an elected politician, and a social activist. On the music front, he found yet another career creating soundtracks for TV and film, starting with the Bros documentary After the Screaming Stops. Blur is back together for some massive shows in 2023, but during the pandemic Rowntree got together—virtually, of course—with producer Leo Abrahams to make his proper solo album. Freed from the constraints of both his bandmates and showrunners, Rowntree did his own thing, and the result is Radio Songs, a delightful 10-song album that flirts with Britpop here and there, but flirts with other interesting sounds as well. Here's “London Bridge.” Philip Selway is best known as the drummer for another huge British band, Radiohead, with whom he's been making music since 1985. Though he always had the itch to write his own songs, it wasn't until 2010 that Selway actually took the leap and released his first solo album, the gentle Familial. In between Radiohead duties, he's found the time to release another one—the more sonically expansive Weatherhouse in 2014—and work on some soundtracks as well. Selway is now gearing up for the release of his third and most ambitious album yet: Strange Dance comes out toward the end of February, and it features a bunch of Selway's musical friends on a very cinematic-yet-personal-sounding set songs. You can preorder various formats here; in the meantime, check out “Check for Signs of Life." In this conversation, these two drummers sound immediately chummy, though they were only passing acquaintances beforehand. They talk about stepping away from bigger bands to do your own thing, including the process of finding your own voice. “What if it's rubbish?” laughs Rowntree at the top of the chat, proving that even the biggest stars can have doubts. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Dave Rowntree and Philip Selway for chatting. Summers...are famously long and hot, and in the superheated days of late summer, time seems to expand in front of us. And it's not just because it's the season for natural disasters — we're back to school and back to work, packing new activities into our schedules while memories of summer fun still linger in our minds. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, languid guitars, ethereal electronics and subtle rhythms for the season, on a program called ENDLESS SUMMER. The title comes from a classic 1966 surfing documentary, but it's been repurposed hundreds of times. We'll do the same, from a concept and music research by guest producer DAVID J. EGAN. Music is by DIATONIS, MATTHEW STEWART, LEO ABRAHAMS, BJORN MEYER, TONY GERBER, EIVIND AARSET, HAMMOCK, and BYLA. Laidback, expansive ambient guitars for the season: ENDLESS SUMMER...on this transmission...of Hearts of Space. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]
This week, we speak to Leo Abrahams. Leo is a musician, composer and producer. Although classically trained, he left behind a degree in composition at the royal academy to play guitar for Imogen Heap, and later, Ed Harcourt as part of their touring bands. A chance encounter with production legend Brian Eno led to him assisting on a variety of projects, often helping to ‘finish' the myriad of releases Brian would be working across. This led to him taking on more production roles and Leo has since built a fascinating C.V. that includes Frightened Rabbit, Wild Beasts, Katie Melua and Paolo Nutini. From his newly completed studio in east London he now divides his time between film and TV composition, session guitar work, solo albums, and of course, his production work. And it's here we joined him to hear the story of his new studio, his serendipitous meeting with Mr Eno and what it's like touring Siberia with a coach full of free jazz musicians… The Process of Production is presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews. Lawrence cut his teeth playing and writing in Indie bands before finding international success and touring the world with his band CITIZENS! During that time he worked with a host of revered producers including Liam Howe, Mark Ralph and Alex Kapranos. Since the band ended in 2016 he's been using that experience to help other artists develop their careers as a writer and producer while continuing to release his own music under various different guises. Bob learned his trade as the producer and multi-instrumentalist in Electronic Pop duo Alpines, whose career spans 3 albums, releases on major and indie record labels, shows with Florence + The Machine, The xx, Emeli Sandé, and a top 20 hit 'Tidal Wave' in collaboration with Sub Focus. In recent years he has turned his focus to producing other acts and has a studio in Chiswick in West London. We are joined once again by Leo Abrahams on guitar (although it's highly unlikely you'll be able to tell it's a guitar due to Leo's mastery of sonic origami). Today's rules: 75bpm / Bells / Space / 6 mins
We're delighted to have Leo Abrahams with us today, on guitar. Another remote jam with Jules working from home. Here are today's rules: BPM 175 / Frenetic but funky / Dm – G, alternating every 2 bars / 5 mins
Jacaranda FM — A gloriously cinematic exploration of love, with lyrics written by Katie Melua, and production by Leo Abrahams – ‘A Love Like That’ is a true tour-de-force of artistic and lyrical maturity. This is songcraft at its finest, with Melua’s faultless performance completely inhabiting the song, and the musical presentation and arrangements expertly executed by Abrahams, co-composer Sam Dixon, and mixers Cameron Craig and Luke Potashnick. The full cast of exceptional musicians on this track also includes drummer Emre Ramazanoglu, flautist Jack Pinter, and The Georgian Philharmonic Orchestra. Of the writing process, Melua says, “This song is asking the essential timeless question about mad love, ‘How do you make a love like that last?’ But before it became about love between a couple, it started its life centred on my relationship with work and the stamina required to keep being an artist in the music industry. It was only after my co-composer Sam Dixon and I wrapped our session, that I retreated to a cottage in the Cotswolds for 3 weeks to wrestle with the song’s lyrics. ‘A Love Like That’ continues a narrative that is across the new album. And in the context of love - it is about having the courage to speak openly and freely.” “The highlight for me was recording the orchestra in Tbilisi with Katie,” recalls producer Leo Abrahams. “The arrangement is written to convey the protagonist’s changing state of mind throughout the song: from turbulent to calm, sentimental to defiant. Technically this was probably the simplest arrangement on the record but we had to do almost 20 takes of the tremolando introduction to get the right amount of aggression but with an elegant resolution. The players seemed to enjoy it!” ‘A Love Like That’ provides a glimpse into Melua’s philosophies on love and life, and the rejection of certain idealistic, prescriptive, rose-tinted viewpoints. - Ian Bredenkamp Media

In this episode we are joined by Justin and Elliot from Editors and producer Leo Abrahams to talk about how they recorded and produced the album 'Violence'. The guys shine a light on some of the working methods they used in the making of the album, treating us to the early home demos that band writer Tom created ahead of tracking in the studio. Listen to find out what an Ed 'weasel' is and why many were brutally culled by Leo, why Tom is the easiest vocalist in the world to record, and why Justin's guitar solos are more 'Top Gun' than they are 'Joey Santiago'. Tracks discussed: Violence, Darkness at the Door, Nothingness.
