Overcoming Self-Judgment: Healing the Wound Guilt

Have you ever felt trapped by the endless cycle of self-criticism and the need to be a perfectionist? In this episode, Matt O'Neill dives deep into the profound impact of the wounds of judgment and guilt – and uncovers transformative strategies for overcoming these destructive thought patterns. Discover the importance of self-acceptance, the role of natural consequences in learning, and the freedom that would come from creating a judgment-free environment for growth and authentic expression. Break free from the shackles of perfectionism and cultivate a life of true happiness. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation:  Embrace imperfection as an essential part of the human experience. Utilize the power of natural consequences as a teacher, rather than punishment. Create a safe haven for vulnerability and authentic expression in relationships. Shift from a mindset of criticism to one of learning and growth. Cultivate self-acceptance and extend compassion to yourself and others. [02:07] The Lasting Impact of Childhood Wounds The wounds of judgment and guilt are not only deeply rooted in our childhood experiences but also have a profound impact on our adult lives. These thought patterns can lead to an endless cycle of self-criticism, conditional love, and a tit-for-tat mentality in our relationships.  [06:39] The Two Forms of Guilt There are two distinct forms of guilt – overcompensating and undercompensating. The overcompensating form of guilt leads to harsh self-criticism and impossibly high standards, while the undercompensating form manifests as people-pleasing and conflict avoidance. Both stem from a fear of judgment and a desire for perfection, profoundly impacting self-perception, relationships, and well-being. [10:27] The Beauty in Embracing Your Imperfection Embracing imperfection and allowing natural consequences to be the teacher, rather than punishment, is key to healing the wounds of judgment and guilt. Surrounding ourselves with people who understand, have compassion, and allow for mistakes is crucial, as it fosters an environment of mutual understanding and growth, where both individuals can extend the same empathy and patience when mistakes occur. [11:01] The Transformative Power of Affirmations in Healing Judgment and Guilt By regularly repeating positive statements, we can retrain our brains to focus on the constructive rather than the critical, countering the trauma of constant self-judgment. These affirmations remind us that imperfection is part of the human experience, enabling us to extend the same compassion to ourselves and others and approach mistakes as opportunities for growth. [26:30] The Role of Natural Consequences in Learning Look at natural consequences as a teacher, rather than punishment in the healing process. By sitting with the discomfort of our choices and allowing the consequences to guide us, we foster true growth and self-esteem, without the need for harsh judgment or criticism. This sermon explores two forms of spiritual blindness. The man at the pool of Bethesda was blinded by "victim mentality," a mindset of helplessness that fails to acknowledge one's ability to personally grow beyond the challenges of their circumstances. The Jews were blinded by legalism. Their preoccupation with enforcing their man-made laws prevented them from recognizing and celebrating the healing Jesus accomplished in the man's life.

Just as Joshua and Israel found great success in conquering their enemies in Joshua 10, God now grants them the same success against an even greater enemy in Joshua 11. In Joshua 10, Israel goes to war against five kings and their armies. In Joshua 11, all the remaining kings in the land of Canaan now unite against Joshua, so that their number was like “the sand that is on the seashore.” God's ordinary design for the Christian life is that we often face challenges in a progression of increasing difficulty. The victories of our past serve to be training grounds for the next trial. And when fresh challenges arrive, God provides fresh grace and assurance.

Luther's justification by faith, though it may have been aimed at an unconditional understanding over and against works-righteousness, melded conditionalism and unconditionalism and injected much of Christian thought and biblical interpretation with this confusion. Romans is the place these two systems collide, and particularly how we read Romans 7 brings out the contrast in epistemology, anthropology, the doctrine of revelation, the understanding of God, and of Christ and atonement. The Apocalyptic Paul Booth is a series of episodes dedicated to apocalyptic readings of the apostle Paul's letters. Interviews situate Pauline apocalyptic—a stream of similar interpretations of Paul's writings originating in the work of exegetes like Rudolf Bultmann and Ernst Käsemann—among other interpretations (the Old and New Paul readings, for instance) as well as among Second Temple Jewish apocalyptic literature. Here we interview Jamie Davies (PhD, St Andrews), Tutor of New Testament and Director of Research at Trinity College, Bristol (UK). In honor of Lag B'Omer, I succinctly recount the Jewish mystical practice of embodying God's attributes during the period of Counting the Omer.  Specifically, in the transition to the week of Lag B'Omer, we transition from practicing in our lives the form of leadership that involves pushing people, and yourself, to get through tasks, the kind of action in which you feel you're carrying people to the finish line so the team gets there, to a different mode of leadership from God's attributes, the leader who says little at the team meeting, and then when they need to, utters just a few humble words (like "Isn't who we are really about X?") that change everything. Netzach (pushing through) and Hod (winning by stepping aside, like in martial arts) interplay.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.10.19.512860v1?rss=1 Authors: Malagon, G., Myeong, J., Klyachko, V. Abstract: Asynchronous release is a ubiquitous form of neurotransmitter release that persists for tens to hundreds of milliseconds after an action potential (AP). How asynchronous release is organized and regulated at the synaptic active zone (AZ) remains debatable. Using nanoscale-precision imaging of individual release events in rat hippocampal synapses, we observed two spatially distinct subpopulations of asynchronous events, ~75% of which occurred inside the AZ and with a bias towards the AZ center, while ~25% occurred outside of the functionally defined AZ, i.e., ectopically. The two subpopulations also differed markedly in temporal properties, with ectopic events occurring at significantly longer time intervals from synchronous events. Both forms of asynchronous release did not, to a large extent, utilize the same release sites as synchronous events. Both asynchronous event subpopulations also differ from synchronous events in some aspects of exo-endocytosis coupling. Specifically, for synchronous but not asynchronous events, coupling with the fast calcium-dependent endocytosis had a gradient decreasing from the AZ center towards its periphery. These results identify two distinct subpopulations of asynchronous release events with distinctive spatiotemporal organization and coupling to endocytic mechanisms. Feeling scattered or disconnected from your physical essence? Then perhaps you need to try some meditation. In this episode, I bring you through two forms of meditation that I use as part of my own spiritual practice. They are especially helpful for moments when you are feeling overwhelmed or when you need to rekindle your connection to the energy of your physical body. The first meditation helps me collect my thoughts and energy into the cocoon of my own body physical and then ground that energy into Mama Earth, so as to anchor my soul more into the present moment. The second meditation - called Vipassana, Insight, or Awareness Meditation - is a great tool to enhance, strengthen, and support empathic abilities. Both of these techniques are proper groundwork for what I will be teaching in future lessons. Enjoy!

Sexual infidelity is not the only way betrayal poisons our relationships, but it seems to be the one we are most familiar with and fixated on. Let's uncover some of the other forms of betrayal that are just as deadly to our relationships. These forms of betrayal often seem like little things on the surface, and many times we easily dismiss them. Then, one day we wake up and find ourselves wondering, “how did this happen?” And, before long, we find ourselves saying things like, “We've changed, we've grown apart, and it turns out that we're just no longer compatible.” What we're really saying is: I don't TRUST you anymore. You must know betrayal is at the heart of every breakup because it destroys the trust we have in our partner. And without trust, our relationships cannot survive or thrive. In this episode, we're covering several key topics about the most common forms of betrayal (outside of cheating) that destroy our relationships, including: How being unwilling to sacrifice can lead to a huge breakdown. Why sexual intimacy should never be used as a negotiation piece or as a reward for good behavior in a relationship. Why having a person outside of your partnership that you confide in and receive counsel from is one of the most deadly things for your relationship. You’ve no doubt sat in your science classes ( gosh that feels like a long time ago) and learned about the theory of evolution.  Quick refresher: It’s about how the fittest survive the harsh changes in the environment and comes out as the victor. But we regularly hear about new diseases, giving us more reasons to be vigilant about our overall health. How are we supposed to get through life as healthily as we could? With the spread of contagious diseases and health risks, our body needs a line of defense that would keep us immune and protected. Hold up, don’t get too stressed about it! We do have ways to protect our health, and it’s not just through supplements. Presenting... the armada of teeny-tiny microbiomes in our gut! That’s right! These microorganisms stand at the vanguard of all the dangerous battles that we face every day!  Did you know that aside from shielding us from potential harm from our environment, they can also affect our cognitive processes? They do so much of the heavy lifting to break food down into body building, brain nourishing information. Yes, that’s right. And knowing more about how it all works can definitely help us all have sharper minds and better memory health.Let’s put your battle gear on as we learn from the National Geographic science communicator, Gut Bug Pioneer and author, Scott Anderson. He’ll tell us how to build on our natural line of defense and train it to fight at its best. I’m sure you’re now also asking, “How can I keep their numbers growing?” No worries, we got you.  In this show you’ll learn about:  The role of the gut microbes in your immune system  How gut microbes affect your mental health How your diet plays a significant role in maintaining a healthy level of good microbes inside your body.  In today’s show, you will learn how to optimise your health and cognitive fitness though the power of your microbiome!  Let’s now power up our body’s line of defense and boost the bugs for brain power!  Listen To The Podcast Now.  About Our Guest Scott C. Anderson is a scientist who specialises in health and technology. He is the author of several science books, including Human Embryonic Stem Cells and co-authored multinational best selling The Psychobiotic Revolution. The Role of Microbes and Our Brain Health  Why Do We Have These Bacteria?  We can never get away from bacteria. They are ubiquitous and coat every surface of the earth. Certain bacteria grew with us, and we grew up with them in a way that was beneficial to both of us. A lot of them are unique to humans. These bacteria have become used to us. They help in protecting us from pathogens. Two Forms of Human Immunity  First, the innate immune system is fighting bacteria in our environment.  Second, the adaptive immune system helps us deal with things our body has never encountered before. This system functions more like hit or miss.  How Can Bacteria Build Our Adaptive Immunity It takes a bacterium to fight a bacterium. We need to live together with our gut bacteria and recruit them to fight the pathogens of the outside world.  It can be good or bad, depending on who is in charge.  A lot of those bacteria are what makes a good set of microbes in our gut called microbiota.  The Human Gut and Its Microorganisms The gut consists of the whole alimentary canal, starting from our mouth all the way to the anus. Our microbiome is composed of a broad variety of microorganisms that have specific roles to play within the alimentary canal. There are situations when some of the harmful bacteria, microorganisms and their metabolites can get into our blood system, especially when our immune system is down. That’s when we get inflammation, the immune system’s alarm bells are starting to ring. They can also get into the brain through the blood and cross the blood brain barrier. Bacteria associated with gingivitis have been found in people's brains living with dementia on autopsy.  How Bacteria Can Affect the Brain  First, it can affect the brain through the vagus nerve. The second way is through the immune system. The third is through the hormonal system through the HPA axis (hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenal gland). Now, researchers are looking into whether bacteria can get to our brain through the metabolites they produce. Drugs and Our Immune System Recent studies would show that some medications we are taking are fighting the bacteria; in the process, they are also killing our own cells. There is collateral damage when we try to fight bacteria and end up damaging our cells as well. How Can We Create a Healthy Relationship with Our Microbiome?   One of the challenges is not knowing enough about probiotics. Some of the available supplements in the market cannot be trusted. However, we can get probiotics without resorting to supplements. We can do this by consuming probiotic foods like kimchi, yoghurt and sauerkraut.  Changes in diet can lead to a more diverse microbiota. The more different species you have, the better.  The Mediterranean diet has been strongly associated with reduced inflammation. Fish, the main protein source in the diet, has high omega 3 ( DHA= docosahexaenoic acid), and EPA = eicosapentaenoic acid) which is a key fatty acid for the brain. Several studies associate higher omega-3 intake with decreased age-related mental decline and a reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease You can also lower inflammation by feeding your gut bacteria fibre. Fibre! Fibre! Fibre! Oi! Oi! Oi!  Almost every known chronic disease like cancer, Alzheimer’s, diabetes and Parkinson’s have their roots in systemic inflammation. Many systemic inflammation comes from the gut.  Aim to keep a robust balance of bacteria, as one pillar to supporting your memory health. There’s almost a upside for every single organ in your body,  especially your beautiful brain. It’s a win - win game really. Happy Bugs = Happy Life  Bacteria and Protein Build-Up Our immune system tracks down and identifies some of the building blocks of the proteins involved with bacteria. The immune system may be in charge of the goodness or badness that comes as a consequence.  Our immune system may react differently depending on the medicine that will be given to a person.  Food Recommendation  Avoid foods which contain preservatives and emulsifiers and those that come farther than the source.  Avoid foods with pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. These chemicals can be poisonous to your microbiome gut citizens. Try the Mediterranean, Nordic or Japanese diet. Eat whole foods and whole grains. Have as much fibrous food as possible.  Resources The Psychobiotic Revolution by Scott Anderson with John Cryan and Ted Dinan Healthy aging and dementia: findings from the Nun Study: The Nun Study is a longitudinal study of 678 Catholic sisters 75 to 107 years of age who are members of the School Sisters of Notre Dame congregation. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12965975     How You Eat Directly Impacts Your Mood:  New Scientist article: https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg24332460-500-how-what-you-eat-directly-influences-your-mental-health/    Gut and Mood Valles-Colomer, M., Falony, G., Darzi, Y., Tigchelaar, E. Welcome back to episode 389 of The Paleo View! (0:40) Stacy is human again and excited to dive into this week's topic. Sarah is feeling very fortunate to have maintained her health during this nasty cold and flu season. Stacy is thrilled that her recovery was a quick one. Matt graduated from Postal Academy first in his class and Stacy is feeling so proud of him. It has been a new world for Stacy and the boys as they all adjust to Matt working out of the house. Sarah and Stacy took a brief walk down memory lane, remembering the moments from their childhood when their mothers would break out into songs.   What Inspired this Show This week's episode was inspired by a listener's question and came from a woman who attended one of Sarah's workshops last year. It is a follow-up question from the healthy weight-loss session that Sarah hosted. The entire session is available as an online course on Sarah's site. It has a focus on not just how to lose weight, but how to lose weight in a healthy way so that it is easy to maintain that loss. The science tells us that every weight loss diet is effective. The trick is that maintaining that weight loss for the vast majority of these diets is flawed in that they are designed to eventually make us fail. Most weight-loss diets will result in two things. One is the reduction of our basil metabolic rate, which means we need fewer calories and burn fewer calories at rest. And two, ghrelin (our hunger hormone) is increasing. So we need fewer calories to keep going on our weight-loss journey, but we are getting hungrier and hungrier. Instinct kicks in and you can't muscle through that situation forever. This is when most people end up yo-yoing. Sarah's online course was designed to bust a lot of diet myths, as well as set the groundwork for understanding how to set smart goals and structure diet and lifestyle and lose weight in a sustainable way. This question from Lauren is a follow-up question to that information.   Joovv Before Stacy and Sarah jump into the science and the show, they want to take a moment to thank this week's sponsor, Joovv. Both Stacy and Sarah love their red light therapy, and they have been a long-time sponsor of the show. Sarah actually wrote a blog post about the role that red light therapy can have on weight loss. There is some preliminary evidence that the infrared wavelengths that Joovv provides can help regulate hormones. The red wavelengths can help to liberate fat from fat cells. There are also inflammatory benefits, skin health benefits, and so much more. Joovv is another tool in our big toolbox in terms of promoting healthy weight loss.   Q&A Lauren says (14:10): I went to The Paleo Mom's workshop in February 2019 and it was lovely. At the workshop, we talked about working out and hunger hormones. When we talk about exercise and weight loss, is there science behind high-intensity workouts that you burn calories throughout the day (after the workout) if the workout is intense enough? OR do you simply burn the calories DURING the workout and it stops there? I’ve read that there isn’t much science behind this theory (but I think it may be a hypothesis?!)  Sarah is very excited to answer this question because there is a lot of science on this. A hypothesis is not just a guess. You look at what is currently known and either work to explain what is happening, or expand what is known by predicting what will happen if the conditions right. Sarah broke down the difference between a hypothesis and a theory. There are a couple of studies now that show that if you achieve the same caloric deficit over time, we feel hungrier and that hunger magnifies over time. Whereas when you achieve that same level of caloric deficit through exercise, our hunger is the same as if we didn't have a caloric deficit. This is a very important thing to know in terms of weight loss. Diet is important from a lean muscle mass preservation effect and from a nutrients for supporting metabolism as we are burning fat. The research published in 2016 on the Big Loser contestants that proved how problematic this dual effect is. The more physically active those contestants were after the season had ended, the more likely they were to maintain their weight loss. Exercise provides this interesting benefit to hunger, but there is more to it than that. Losing weight is not as simple as calories in versus calories out, but calories do matter. A caloric deficit is required to lose weight. Where exercise comes into play in addition to helping to regulate hunger through weight loss, is hormone regulation. It improves insulin sensitivity, preserves lean muscle mass, a metabolic boost is stimulated, and exercise has been known to improve the gut microbiome composition. The pieces mentioned above have been broken down throughout the history of this show. Please reference these previous episodes for more information: 140: THE DANGER OF KETOGENIC DIETS 195: THE LATEST IN WEIGHT LOSS RESEARCH 196: THE OBESITY PARADOX 197: CARBOHYDRATE INSULIN HYPOTHESIS 198: WEIGHT LOSS FOLLOW UP 305: WHY INSULIN IS IMPORTANT & AWESOME! 353: BEACH BODY YO-YO 386: INTERMITTENT FASTING   More on Exercise Generally, exercise that has been traditionally viewed as cardio, generally results in more calories burned per hour when we are doing it.  (28:16) There are some exceptions, like when very heavy weight lifting can burn as many calories as running. However, there is a lot more data on cardio available. Any time that you add load (like hiking with a backpack), burns way more calories than hiking without. How many calories you burn in a workout is dependent on a number of things. Overall, on average, cardio burns more than traditional strength training activities, with the exception of weight lifting at a very intense level. There is a vast body of research showing that we do get a metabolic boost that can last hours after exercise. How high the boost is, is typically related to how intense the exercise is. How long it lasts, is related to the duration. In the last few years, there have been studies that have been trying to expand on these understandings. Some studies have shown that short bursts of activity can have a really dramatic boost on our metabolism after we are done exercising. One study, in particular, looked at two-minute sprints on a stationary bicycle, with three-minute rest periods in between. The same participants either did one, two, or three of these circuits. The study showed that they had a significantly increased metabolism. If they did three of those two-minute sprints, their metabolism stayed elevated for four hours afterward. There is definitely an impact based on how much we do, but there is a boost no matter what. There was another study where cyclists worked at approximately 80% of their VO2 max (which is a heavy workload) for 45-minutes. These participants had a metabolic boost that lasted 14-hours. Most studies show that by 24-hours later, our metabolism returns to normal. However, there was a study that looked at 80-minutes of cycling at 70-75 VO2 max, and their metabolism was still 5% higher than their BMR 24-hours later.   Strength Training There have been some really interesting studies looking at circuit training. The boost in our metabolism that we get from strength-training appears to last a lot longer than the boost that we get from cardio. Studies have shown a range in metabolic boost from weight-lifting ranging from 16-hours, to 24hours, and even up to 38-hours. Sarah broke down the studies in greater detail, showing how the results vary based on how the study is structured. When we do strength training, there seems to be a much longer tail in terms of how long metabolism lasts. There have even been studies that have compared circuit training to treadmill training. They have shown that the initial level is higher from resistance training. The metabolic boost from weight lifting is higher and lasts longer. This makes a fairly strong case for the metabolic benefits for weight-lifting, resistance-type training. In addition, over time this increases the basal metabolic rate through building more muscle. Overall, Sarah thinks it is a great idea to do both. Sarah found a few of the studies looking at volume to be particularly interesting (39:13). After reviewing the findings, Sarah feels that there isn't yet enough information to tell if more volume or more intensity equals a bigger metabolic boost.   Combining the Two Forms of Training There are a couple of studies showing that if you do cardio first and then your resistance training, you actually burn more calories during your workout. Doing the same amount of work, the difference is substantial. Sarah again broke down the details of the research into greater detail. Stacy shared her experience with picking a lane when it came to weight loss versus building strength. You need to know what your priorities are before jumping into a routine. Sarah wanted to highlight a key detail that we are talking about relatively small differences over the course of 24-hours. It is most important to set yourself up with an activity that you like that you are most likely to stick with. You need to feel good about it, and your body needs to like it. It is also very important to keep your intensity and your sport at something that is sustainable. Exercise is an important component of healthy weight loss, but it is also an important component of healthy living.  Stacy emphasized the importance of finding something you really enjoy doing. It comes down to habits. Make sure that you feel your best and are actually excited to do the exercise you have committed to doing.   A Deeper Look Into the Details There is one more study that Sarah would like to discuss. Interval training has been shown to provide a bigger metabolic boost. So combining that short-burst, intense type cardio with rest periods and with strength training, definitely provides the biggest metabolic boost. This final study found that going back and forth between cardio and resistance training did provide the highest metabolic boost that lasted the longest. The study also confirmed what was found in previous studies, regarding the benefits of doing cardio before weight-training, versus the other way around. Sarah found this study's findings on perceived exertion to be very interesting as well. The study found that the lowest perceived exertion was doing the endurance training first, and then the resistance training.  Sarah would love to see more data on this, and is actually working on a blog post on this.  The takehome is that exercise does boost your metabolism.  It will be a lot higher for depending on the type of exercise, how intense it was and how long it lasted. This is on top of all the other benefits of exercise. Like restoring insulin sensitivity, supporting liver health, the benefits to the gut microbiome, the hormonal impact, and so much more.   Other Ways to Boost Metabolism There are other things that are known to boost metabolism.  Digesting protein increases your basal metabolic rate.  This is true for any diet; if there is a big caloric restriction, we are burning muscle. The only thing that preserves muscle through weight loss is the combination of eating a high protein diet with doing some resistance training.  You can actually build more muscle through weight loss with this combo.  Eating about 30% of calories from protein has been shown to be very beneficial to both weight loss and supports the maintenance of weight loss.  Drinking a big bottle of water can also boost our metabolism. Getting enough sleep is really important.  There is a huge link between inadequate sleep and risk of weight gain and obesity.   Closing Thoughts The real take-home message is that exercise is important. It is important whether or not you are trying to lose weight, maintain weight loss, or maintain your health. One of the episodes that Stacy forgot to mention as a favorite is episode 367. Stacy took a moment to reiterate that weight loss can be for health and it can also be for aesthetics.  If you feel like you are failing at your weight-loss goals, this might be a mental shift as well as a physical shift that is needed. Referring back to that episode may be a great resource if you are having those feelings. It has definitely been a journey for Stacy to reach the point where she is longer working to be thin. Red-light therapy is one of the ways that you can both tweak how you feel mentally and physically.  When Stacy starts her day with red-light therapy, she mentally feels better.  She finds that she is prone to make better choices when she gets that boost in the morning.  If you feel like you are struggling, this might be something worth exploring. One of the things that Sarah did to start her recovery from her health crash was to dedicate time to red-light therapy with her Joovv.  The way that Joovv has combined the two wave-lengths is genius.  The wavelengths complement each other in so many different ways, in regards to our health. What Sarah finds most beneficial, is the effect that red-light therapy has on her stress management.  If you are regulating your stress response every morning, it will help you avoid making choices as a response to stress. Sarah and Stacy both love Joovv and hope that listeners will go check them out here.  Joovv is currently having a big sale, so be sure to check out those limited-time offers. Thank you so much for listening! If you think someone else might be interested in this show, please share it.  Please also leave reviews so that others can find this episode.  Thank you again for listening! Stacy and Sarah will be back again next week (1:06:18).

As we saw in defining hope, for this virtue to be present the person must perceive heavenly happiness as a) something desirable and possible, and b) something not yet secure. If either of these two truths are lacking from a person's outlook, hope will die. Hence there are two vices which are directly opposed to the second theological virtue: Despair and Presumption. The primary threat to hope is despair. Despair isn't just a feeling of gloominess, or depression. It's the refusal to strive after God, the refusal to make Holiness and Heaven our primary goal and to work for it. People succumb to despair for a variety of reasons, but ultimately, the causes of despair can be narrowed down to two categories. The first is excessive self-focus. If you just look at yourself you're going to be struck with how disproportionate your strengths are relative to the goal. In other words, if you just look at yourself you'll only see that there's not enough there to do what needs to be done, and you'll end up giving up on holiness and happiness. And it's certainly the case that what we have on our own isn't enough, which is why we're supposed to keep our eyes on Christ, beg for God's mercy and strength, and realize that “With God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26). An excellent illustration of the danger of self-focus is the story of Peter, who, as long as he kept his attention on Our Lord, was able to walk on water. When his focus switched to his own personal ability and the surrounding circumstances, he began to sink. That's how the interplay between hope and despair works: look at Him, not at yourself. The second reason we despair is attachment to sin. We end up not really wanting to pursue God, because we know it's going to mean giving up certain sins to which we've grown accustomed. So we choose the evil habits we're used to over the promise of eternal joy. You are designed to be a saint. But you don't want to be a saint because you don't want to give up things you think you cant live without which aren't really making you happy anyway, still you are addicted to them. What are they? Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you the addictions that keep you from perfect joy! A major symptom of despair is an inordinate need for distraction. When you make the decision to settle for mediocre pleasures, mediocre achievements, mediocre loves, you still know deep down you ought to be pursuing higher things. So you try to find some distraction to help you drown out the divine call. Do you remember what it was like to put off studying for a big test, and then tried to make up for it by spending a night in the library? When you get to the library you're terrified about how much work you have to do, and how little time you have to do it in. You know you need to buckle down and get to the books, but instead you go into denial, trying not to think about it. You wander aimlessly around the library in desperate search of anything that'll help you procrastinate. You read a magazine article that isn't even interesting, you browse your social media online, you strike up a conversation with the library staff. But all the while you're bored, and you have this sick feeling in your stomach because you know a) that the test is coming, b) you don't know what's going to be on it; c) you're not ready for it. That's our society. We know we ought to spend our time on more noble aspirations, getting ready for the final accounting of judgment, but we really don't want to talk about it, and we don't even want to think about it. So we look for anything that can distract us, anything that can drown out the guilt. Maybe that's why there's so little silence today. Presumption is a much more infrequently discussed kind of hopelessness. It's the vice of thinking heaven is guaranteed: “I'm as good as saved already.” Presumption can be just as dangerous as despair.

Payments on Fire

Payment Innovation Moves to the Core When we conduct our Glenbrook Payments Boot Camp, our first graphic illustrates the three essential steps in every transaction - initiation, funding, and completion. When looked at through the lens of of the past decade most innovation has been in initiation. Consider: Apple Pay, Google Pay, Venmo, QR codes. The list is long of ways to kick off a transaction. Funding is all about where the money comes from. Usually a bank account, often a wallet holding money. Some innovation there but not a great deal. There are only so many ways to store funds. Completion, the last step, is the most important to many participants as it’s when the transaction completes with the final movement of money. Five years ago, in those boot camps, I said that completion, also called settlement, is the innovation-resistant phase of a transaction. Today, everything has changed. In the U.S., we have new services such as Zelle and Venmo that appear to the end parties to deliver instant settlement. They may use card rails or bank rails like ACH to complete the transaction.  Two Forms of Settlement In this discussion with Glenbrook’s Carol Coye Benson, we look at two forms of settlement: end party settlement - for example, an employer paying an employee - and then Carol focuses on the nuanced world of interbank settlement. If you’ve heard the terms net settlement, gross settlement, or RTGS and wondered what they mean, take a listen.  Faster Payments and Settlement We also talk about the phenomenon of faster payments and the settlement techniques these systems employ. 40 countries around the world are in one stage or another of deploying faster payment systems that push money from bank account to bank account. It's already in the US via the Real Time Payments Network from The Clearing House and, perhaps, a competing service from the Federal Reserve. (To get an update on the Real Time Payment Network, listen to Episode 81 of Payments on Fire). These faster payment systems vary in their capabilities. Speed and data carrying capacity are just two variables. But we have seen that when a new payment system enters a market innovative offerings can flourish, provided access to that system is encouraged by rule, regulation, or both. However, that level of openness is not guaranteed. As Glenbrook have seen in our work around the world, some systems are essentially closed by market power or operating rules. These constraints limit the network effect's benefits of ubiquity, convenience and, often, cost. This is an ongoing challenge. In this age of fintech, banks are under pressure to innovate. As owners or participants in new systems, some may choose to limit access to their fancy new rails in an attempt to forestall competitive market entrants. Others will be “encouraged” by regulators to open up. Of course, end party choices will play a big role, provided there’s a choice available. The New Game Settlement has traditionally been led by major commercial banks or the central bank of each country. That model still holds. In some markets, including the U.S., we expect a push and pull for control between those two entities. Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, suggests such tensions may justify  the issuance by a nation's central bank of a fiat digital currency as a counterweight to the alternative control over payments by a concentrated set of banks and processors. Settlement innovation has created a competitive environment that did not exist before. It will be the interplay of rules, regulations, technical capabilities, end party value proposition, and market power that will determine the evolution of each country's settlement platform. In some, regulators will shape the outcome. In others, system access for fintechs and the "open banking" model will be a determinant. For all, cost effective access for end parties is critical. So much for thoughts of a static payments ecosystem. If you think of yourself as a payments geek or just want to get under the hood of how money really moves, Carol is a terrific guide.

Background: The erythrocyte binding antigen 175 (EBA-175) is a 175 kDa antigen of Plasmodium falciparum and plays a major role in erythrocyte recognition by the parasite. The antigen is also supposed to be partly responsible for the invasion of erythrocytes by merozoites. EBA-175 has been sequenced from the FCR-3 and CAMP strains of P. falciparum. The sequences were identical in most parts of the gene. Differences were apparent in a 423 bp segment in the FCR-3 strain, the F-Fragment, that is not found in the CAMP-strain and a 342 bp segment, the C-Fragment, which is present in the CAMP-strain but not in the FCR-3-strain. The aim of this study was to assess the distribution of the two EBA-175-alleles in the Lao PDR. Materials & Methods: Altogether, 240 blood-samples were collected in two areas of the country: Attapeu in the south and Lung Namtha in the north. Subsequently, the material was scanned for the F- and C-fragments. Results: In the whole study population, 52% carried the F- fragment, and 41% the C-fragment while seven percent of the patients were infected with at least two parasite strains and showed both alleles. Conclusion: Distribution of the alleles showed significant differences between the north and the south province. Reasons for this include possible importation of different parasite strains from neighbouring countries.
