It's all a Blur - The Story of Blur

In this episode, we dive into the storied career of Blur, one of the most iconic bands to emerge from the British music scene in the 1990s. We start by exploring their early days in London, when Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James, and Dave Rowntree first came together to form a band that would become synonymous with the Britpop movement. We'll discuss the band's rise to fame, starting with their debut album, Leisure, and how they quickly became the darlings of the UK indie scene. With hits like "There's No Other Way" and "She's So High," Blur began carving out a unique sound that combined jangly guitars, catchy melodies, and Albarn's distinct vocals. Moving into the height of Britpop in the mid-90s, we examine Blur's transformation into cultural icons with their seminal albums Modern Life Is Rubbish, Parklife, and The Great Escape. We'll discuss how Blur, alongside Oasis, became one of the leading faces of the Britpop "Battle of the Bands," dominating the charts and headlines with their rivalry. This period marked a creative high point for the band, producing unforgettable hits like "Girls & Boys," "Parklife," and "Country House," which captured the zeitgeist of British youth culture. We'll delve into how Blur's sharp, satirical lyrics and their reflections on British society helped them stand out from their contemporaries. As the episode progresses, we look at the band's evolution in the late 90s and early 2000s, when they began experimenting with new sounds and distancing themselves from the Britpop label. We'll explore their self-titled album, Blur, and the shift towards a more lo-fi and alternative rock sound, influenced heavily by American indie music. The success of singles like "Beetlebum" and "Song 2" demonstrated Blur's ability to reinvent themselves and appeal to a broader, international audience. We'll discuss the band's internal struggles, including Graham Coxon's departure, and how these challenges influenced their music and dynamic. We'll then move to the band's hiatus and the members' individual projects, particularly Damon Albarn's formation of the virtual band Gorillaz, which further showcased his versatility as an artist. We'll explore how Blur's brief hiatus and eventual reunion for the Think Tank album in 2003 marked another significant shift in their sound, embracing more experimental and electronic elements. The episode will cover their triumphant return to the stage in the late 2000s, including their emotional reunion shows and the release of The Magic Whip in 2015, proving that Blur's relevance and creative spark were far from diminished. Talk2TheHand is an independent throwback podcast run by husband and wife, Jimmy and Beth.

This is the band's first album since 2015's rather disappointing The Magic Whip album, but the members of Blur have been keeping themselves busy in a world without their main band; Damon Albarn has been doing some solo stuff and a little project called Gorillaz, both guitarist Graham Coxon and drummer Dave Rowntree have gone solo too and bassist Alex James has... made some cheese... we're not sure. So, does the world need a new Blur album? Is it a risk to come out of hiatus and give the world new material when you already have a stellar back catalogue to fall back on and millions of fans who would surely be happy to see Blur live out their days as a lovely nostalgia blanket?Well, as you'll hear, when they are able to give us such an interesting new flavour as the one we get on The Ballad of Darren, it's certainly worth the risk.  ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

It's a song that dips into the melting pot of sound that the Blur drummer accumulates from his passion for dipping in and out of radio stations the world over and landing on the distinctive sound of a Bollywood soundtrack that Dave splices together with a clipped beat. It's a colorful tune, all rhythm and melody.Dave Rowntree on "Tape Measure":“Anxiety - an unpleasant emotion of inner turmoil and dread. We're fundamentally herd animals, whose main defensive tactic is running away and hiding. We've no sharp claws or teeth to fight with. So we're over sensitized to danger. We see shapes in the shadows, faces in the fire. Disaster always lurks on the grey edges of our consciousness. On the upside, come the zombie apocalypse, we anxious people will already be in hiding, leaving all you smug normies to have your brains eaten.”Radio Songs was produced by Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Wild Beasts, Ghostpoet). We want to hear from you! On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've put together the drummers from two of the UK's biggest bands in recent memory: Dave Rowntree and Philip Selway. Rowntree came to fame with Blur, one of the original Britpop bands of the early 1990s. I probably don't need to give you much biography on Blur, but in the band's couple of long hiatuses, Rowntree has lived about a dozen lives. He's been an amateur pilot, a professional lawyer, an elected politician, and a social activist. On the music front, he found yet another career creating soundtracks for TV and film, starting with the Bros documentary After the Screaming Stops. Blur is back together for some massive shows in 2023, but during the pandemic Rowntree got together—virtually, of course—with producer Leo Abrahams to make his proper solo album. Freed from the constraints of both his bandmates and showrunners, Rowntree did his own thing, and the result is Radio Songs, a delightful 10-song album that flirts with Britpop here and there, but flirts with other interesting sounds as well. Here's “London Bridge.” Philip Selway is best known as the drummer for another huge British band, Radiohead, with whom he's been making music since 1985. Though he always had the itch to write his own songs, it wasn't until 2010 that Selway actually took the leap and released his first solo album, the gentle Familial. In between Radiohead duties, he's found the time to release another one—the more sonically expansive Weatherhouse in 2014—and work on some soundtracks as well. Selway is now gearing up for the release of his third and most ambitious album yet: Strange Dance comes out toward the end of February, and it features a bunch of Selway's musical friends on a very cinematic-yet-personal-sounding set songs. You can preorder various formats here; in the meantime, check out “Check for Signs of Life."  In this conversation, these two drummers sound immediately chummy, though they were only passing acquaintances beforehand. They talk about stepping away from bigger bands to do your own thing, including the process of finding your own voice. “What if it's rubbish?” laughs Rowntree at the top of the chat, proving that even the biggest stars can have doubts. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Dave Rowntree and Philip Selway for chatting. It has taken Dave Rowntree ages to make his first non-soundtrack body of work outside of Blur, especially when you consider their last album Magic Whip, is almost a decade old. Then again, perhaps it explains why Radio Songs has come out very well indeed - better than the public might have a right to expect, given the track record of drummers stepping out from behind the kit. The album's electrosonic palette is drawn from all Rowntree's influences, including Air and Talk Talk, with - as we discuss, hints of Robert Wyatt and Thomas Dolby. And more predictably perhaps, Blur. It is surprising just how much Rowntree's vocal style is reminiscent of his bandmate Damon Albarn, who collaborated on the record only from a distance, giving Rowntree feedback in the form of one page of notes. Now he's gotten round to it, Rowntree has caught the bug for making solo records, he plans two more over the next two years, provided he doesn't get too distracted by Blur. His plans to tour Radio Songs this year have been somewhat derailed by what he calls “Blur's megapolis summer”. And so inevitably then, to Blur. Where does it fit in his schedule and his headspace?“Fundamentally I'm still the drummer in Blur, that's how I see myself, but if you plot Blur activity on a graph, it's tapering away to zero, so it's not going to last forever”. So, how does he feel about stepping out to perform live as frontman after all those years behind the kit? Undaunted is the answer:“It has felt surprisingly natural really. The music starts and you get swept along in it. I'm happiest out on the road, gig every night, different town every day - there's something seductive about that”. Whether or not the Blur bandwagon keeps rolling, Dave Rowntree looks like he has found himself a second longevous career in music. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

Noel Gallaghers neue Platte kommt im Sommer. Britpop is back!

Death Valley Girls anuncian Islands in the sky, su nuevo disco, con el rock and roll cósmico de "what are the odds", adelanto inspirado en "material girl" de Madonna.

GB2RS News Sunday the 28th of November 2021 The news headlines: Centenary of transatlantic amateur signals RSGB features in ICQ Podcast National Radio Centre holiday season openings December 2021 marks the Centenary of the first amateur radio signals crossing the Atlantic. Signals from the USA were received by Paul Godley, 2ZE, at a specially prepared receiving setup at Ardrossan in Scotland. From the 1st to the 26th of December, all UK and Crown Dependency licensees may add the suffix /2ZE to their amateur callsign to mark the centenary. A programme of celebratory events will take place throughout December on both sides of the Atlantic; more details will be included in next week's GB2RS News. Meanwhile, you can learn more about the story at www.transatlantic.org.uk The team at ICQ Podcast invited the RSGB to have a chat with them in their latest episode. RSGB President Stewart Bryant, G3YSX talks about the IARU Region 1 workshop; ESC Chair Tony Kent, G8PBH gives an update on training and exams; whilst General Manager Steve Thomas, M1ACB and Comms Manager Heather Parsons discuss the recent online Convention and the way forward for the event. Go to icqpodcast.com and find episode 364. The RSGB section starts just after one hour and 29 minutes into the podcast. The RSGB National Radio Centre at Bletchley Park has announced its opening times for the Christmas and New Year periods. The NRC will be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. On New Year's Eve, the Centre will close at 2 pm. See www.nationalradiocentre.com for useful info to help you plan your visit. It's not too late to support December YOTA Month 2021. We need your help to get youngsters on the air and interested in radio communications. We have been granted the callsign GB21YOTA, for allocation to youngsters to operate throughout December. To see what operating slots are still available please look up GB21YOTA on QRZ.com. You can register your interest by emailing yota.month@rsgb.org.uk. You must be a Full licence holder or have a Full licence holder willing to supervise the activity. Recently in the media spotlight was Dave Rowntree, M0IEG. Apart from being a radio amateur and a county councillor in Norfolk, Dave is the drummer for the rock band Blur and has recently signed a solo contract with record company Cooking Vinyl. The story in Music Week quotes Dave describing how he enjoyed tuning around the spectrum in his youth. You can read the report at tinyurl.com/GB2RS-2811A The German national amateur radio society DARC has studied the recent flooding disasters in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate and will use the information to help develop future plans. The DARC department for emergency and disaster radio aims to be able to support the population and independent helpers on-site in times of a prolonged communications failure. The aim is to build up a pool of material and helpers who can then set up and operate a temporary network with access to the internet, for example. The full report, in German, is on the DARC website at tinyurl.com/GB2RS-2811B The RSGB understands that its sister society in Norway, the NRRL, is working to establish a beginners' licence in that country, which presently has only one licence class. Hoping to target those as young as 12 or 13, the licence is proposed to permit 10 watts and to encourage newcomers to build their own equipment. And now for details of rallies and events As previously announced, the Bishop Auckland RAC rally, which was planned for today, has been cancelled. Now is the perfect time to let us know your group's rally or event plans for 2022. Email radcom@rsgb.org.uk with details and we'll publicise your event for free. The 144MHz FT8 Activity Contest takes place on Wednesday from 1900 to 2100  UTC. Using FT8 only on the 2m band, the exchange is signal report and locator. Wednesday sees the start of the UK Six Metre Group Winter Marathon. It's not a contest, just an invitation to work as many people as possible on the 50MHz band using any mode. The exchange is signal report plus locator. The event ends on the 31st of January next year. The ARRL 160m CW contest begins at 2200 UTC on Friday the 3rd and continues until Sunday at 1600UTC. Using CW only on the 160m band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. W and VE stations also send their ARRL or RAC section info. During the contest, the RSGB will activate special event 1920s vintage callsigns to commemorate the transatlantic tests. Sunday the 5th sees the 144MHz AFS contest, running from 1000 to 1600 UTC. Using all modes on the 2m band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Friday 26th November 2021. We had yet another week with low solar activity. The solar flux index started the week at 79 and by Thursday had only climbed to 83. Ideally, we want the SFI to be above 100 to guarantee good 10m openings. Geomagnetically, the Sun has been quiet with a maximum Kp index of three. On Thursday it was at one for most of the day. Propquest says that the MUF over a 3,000km path has exceeded 28MHz at times, but was stuck below 24.9MHz on Thursday. As a result, 10m sounded very quiet indeed. This weekend is the CQWW CW contest, which is bound to generate some interest across the bands. Do take a look, especially on 21 and 28MHz, where we can expect some good DX at times, albeit somewhat fleetingly. NOAA has the SFI pegged between 82 and 85 next week as well. There are signs of a possible new sunspot building on the STEREO Ahead spacecraft imagery, but we will have to wait and see. The Kp index may rise to three this weekend, but next week looks quite settled with a Kp index of two forecast. There are coronal holes on the solar surface, but these are relatively small at the time of writing and look non-threatening. As always, things can change quite quickly so don't take out word for it. Keep an eye on solarham.com for updates and Propquest.co.uk for near real-time critical frequency figures. And now the VHF and up propagation news. The current unsettled spell of weather has curtailed any thoughts of Tropo for the period, which includes all of the coming week. This leaves rain scatter to discuss and these heavy showers, some wintry with hail or even thunder, may prove useful for the GHz bands. It is usually the case that showers can be quite vigorous early in the winter season, gaining their energy from the still relatively warm seas. This means that rain scatter paths will often involve showers running south or southeast over the North Sea or the Irish Sea, which online weather radars or lightning displays can locate easily. Other modes are available, such as meteor scatter or aurora and it's well worth finding a good activity-logging website that displays these exotic paths to be there when the propagation is present. Most of the November meteor showers are past their peak, with the exception of the small November Orionids, active from the 13th of November to the 6th of  December, peaking on the 28th of November.  The big Geminids meteor shower with a ZHR of 120+ is getting closer. It usually starts to build up from the beginning of December so watch out for improving meteor scatter conditions. Remember that the period around dawn is the best for random, ie non-shower, meteor scatter conditions. For EME enthusiasts, Moon declination is still positive until Tuesday and reaches perigee on Saturday. Expect shortening Moon windows and lower peak elevations, but decreasing path losses as the week progresses. Next Saturday morning the Moon and Sun are close in the sky so expect high sky temperatures due to Sun noise, with levels reaching over 3,000 Kelvin at 144MHz on Sunday.  And that's all from the propagation team this week
