LuAnn Nigara and Vita Vygovska's Ah-Ha Moments “Focus on what you're doing for that designer..if someone is going to walk up to you and say, ‘I know you have 50 balls in the air, I'm going to take one of them. And side by side with your direction, I'm going to keep that ball in the air. You never have to look over at that ball again. You know, you look at me, my eyeballs, I got it,' what designer is going to say no.” – LuAnn Nigara “If you're going after interior designers—go and hang out where they hang out.” – Vita Vygovska “All these marketing tactics, they are nothing more than creating, fostering, nurturing a strong relationship over time.” – Vita Vygovska “In all of this, in everything we do, in marketing especially, you have to be authentic to yourself.” – Vita Vygovska “We don't need to teach [interior designers] about window treatments in order to create a relationship that's meaningful. In the second episode of our Launch Greensboro series, advisory board members Kelli Frazier and Clifford Thompson talk to three entrepreneurs about their experiences with LaunchLab Growth. Guests are Matthew Mullens, Shawn Straub and Larry Diana. Thanks for joining us! This episode is sponsored by Truliant Federal Credit Union Visit Truliant here --------------------- Today's hosts are Kelly Fraser and Clifford Thompson, who both sit on the board for Launch Greensboro. --------------------- 00:57 - Kelly welcomes back listeners to continue to learn more about Launch Greensboro. Launch Greensboro aims to accelerate growth for entrepreneurs starting businesses in the Greensboro and Triad area by providing education, mentoring, and access to capital. Today's episode and guests focus on the growth and mentorship aspects of the program. 1:55 - We start with guest Matthew Mullins, founder of Empasta, a plant-based cheese sauce. He discusses how he first heard about Launch Greensboro, how he got involved at the start, and how Launch really helped his business grow and gain traction. 4:22 - Kelly asks Matthew to explain his experience in Launch Greensboro's growth program. Matthew describes a several-week program that builds a cohort of entrepreneurs learning together. Professionals and experienced speakers teach important skills, paid interns can be provided, and mentors are available to help expand networks, provide expertise, and keep entrepreneurs accountable. 7:30 - Clifford asks what advice Matthew would give to another young person who was looking to start a business. Matthew simply says “Go for it!” He emphasizes that younger people generally have less to lose and more mobility, but you will still have to bootstrap, work hard, and find capital to build something out of nothing. 8:59 - Matthew gives an update on how Empasta was growing and where it is now, and how COVID has impacted his business. He stresses the importance of being flexible and open to pivot, which has brought him to the point of exploring how to potentially expand. 10:25 - Kelly inquires about how Launch Greensboro has stayed a part of Matthew's personal and professional network since he graduated from the program. Matthew explains that Launch provides continuing education through Lunch & Learns, newsletters, and simply being available to share resources. He emphasizes some events that help him stay connected to other entrepreneurs and mentors as well. 11:35 - Kelly introduces Shawn and Larry to speak more about the mentorship program, from both the mentor and mentee perspectives. Shawn Straub, the owner of AltHR Partners, introduces herself, a specialty HR consulting company that has been around for a couple of years. Shawn went through the Launch Greensboro Growth Program and was matched with her mentor, Larry, who really helped solidify her business vision and action plan. 16:00 - Larry Diana shares his side of the mentor relationship and how his professional career helped him establish a firm foundation of business knowledge, before starting his own business. Throughout his professional experiences, he really found his calling in entrepreneurship and in mentoring others. 18:33 - Clifford asks Larry what surprises him the most from his experience working with the startups at Launch. Larry is consistently impressed by the energy and commitment of entrepreneurs because it is such hard work to launch a business successfully. He enjoys the part of mentorship that allows him to coach mentees through the challenges and manage the problems - good and bad - that arise. 20:18 - Kelly asks Shawn how things are currently at AltHR and what her next steps for the company are. AltHR is running and growing strong, and credits the strong networks and connections that she made through Launch for that growth. She explains that she's found some niches where AltHR can really flourish as the main provider of HR systems. 24:47 - Shawn and Kelly highlight how impactful Launch is, creating its own ecosystem of entrepreneurs and mentors to continue the cycle of helping new businesses, to celebrate the growth of Launch businesses, and to find camaraderie in other entrepreneurs who know the importance of the struggles and successes. 27:15 - Each guest helps to wrap up the episode with some final thoughts. Matt recaps how Launch Greensboro is really the place to be as an entrepreneur looking to launch or grow a business. The resources and connections provided are invaluable. Larry echoes this sentiment, expressing that the learning opportunities, connections, and knowledge sources are endless. --------------------- Check out Matthew's products at https://www.empastafood.com/ Find more about Shawn's HR offerings at http://www.althrpartners.com/ Are you interested in becoming a mentor with Launch Greensboro? Hosting a nonprofit event sounds easy...until you actually do it! There are a million little pieces that have to come together for the big day, and I wanted to talk about all of them. There was so much great information in my interviews this week that I have to break this episode into two parts. In Part One, we’ll talk about how you can improve your next fundraising event with donor data and how to welcome newcomers who are attending their first event with you. Our first guest is Timi Paccioretti, the Senior Marketing Manager of Little Green Light. LGL is my favorite donor management platform, and Timi gives advice on how to use your donor management system to improve your events. She shares tips about segmenting your target audience, capturing event attendee information, tracking event outcomes, and more. Next, we chat with Holly Clark, a seasoned nonprofit events planner and owner of Holly Clark Events. Holly walked me through the details of how to plan and coordinate three very different types of nonprofit events: a “lunch and learn,” an upscale signature event, and an outdoor holiday event. In Part One, you’ll learn why Lunch & Learns are timeless and effective, even if you may think they sound a little outdated. Holly also offers some great advice on incorporating strong a strong call-to-action at your Lunch and Learn by using the examples of Safe Haven Family Shelter and Renewal House. Be sure to subscribe to the Nonprofit Jenni Show so you won’t miss Holly’s advice on hosting signature and outdoor events! International Women's Day is March 8 every year. What did you do to celebrate? My clients had women led panels, had a podcast or video discussions, Lunch & Learns, or invited me to speak. Yesterday, I spent the day with my clients at Caterpillar, Zoetis, my very own Women's Leadership Academy, and wrapped up with Indiana Society of Association Executives on "Bolstering Your Authentic Confidence," "Leading with Influence," "Asking for What You Want," and "Building a Winning Career Game Plan." Keep the conversation going beyond this one day. If you want to promote real positive change, keep the dialogue going. If you are a leader or want to be more of an ally, ask questions like: - What is it like to be like you? - How can I support you? - Where do you want to go with your career? Celebrate success. Keep it up. Be candid. Join us here for the next hot topic next week!

GUEST: Vice President of Human Resources at Moz, Rebecca Clements https://moz.com/about/team/rebeccadclements Rebecca Clements on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebecca-clements Human Resources’ reputation as being pain-in-the-butt rule-makers and rule-enforcers was a leading reason Rebecca Clements chose to cultivate a different kind of HR experience. In this episode, Rebecca talks about the imperative of good culture in tech in order to attract and maintain talent from diverse backgrounds of experience. And she tells us how she and her team do it… “Culture is something that happens around you unless you are really intentional about it. If you are intentional and use it as an advantage within the business, then all of your time spent on it will be worth while and set you apart from your competitors, attract people, and help your business be successful.” What makes a company “culturally fit?” Clearly articulated values that everyone in the company embraces, wants to be a part of and upholds. Intentionality about how priorities are managed. Treat people well – clients and co-workers. How you treat one will bleed into your behavior with the other. She generously shares Moz’s value system called TAGFEE that every Mozzer aspires to daily. Transparent: Be willing to talk about it all: the good, bad, and ugly. They have a commitment to share what didn’t work, without making excuses. Authentic: Bring your BEST authentic self to work. People bring and share their stories. They share at Lunch & Learns to offer personal insight. They are encouraged to speak up and bring their set of experiences to the table. Active disagreement is vital and encouraged in order to have all opinions authentically on the table. Generous: The company provides paid-paid vacations for employees and sabbaticals for employees after 5 years. Considering the “Whole Human”. They match charity donations. They demonstrate a generous mindset by being available with time, information and coaching/guidance. Fun: Positivity- assume good intent, “You have my best interest at heart and I have yours.” They actively invest in team-building and building community. Empathetic: Empathy is key to decision making and solving conflict. They seek to employ empathetic people to increase the quality of the work environment. They talk about it, model it and celebrate empathy in their workplace. Exceptional: Being willing to choose unique, value-based marketing strategies or “give-aways”. Offering professional coaching to all of their employees to help them through challenges and opportunities. Anyone can pursue coaching for any reason at all.
