316: What Would Lu Do?: How to Qualify Leads Without Disqualifying Your Future Revenue

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 21, 2025 41:00

Today With LuAnn Nigara: Hey friends—today we're getting real about a critical part of running a profitable business: qualifying leads. Because let's be honest—most of us are either letting go of clients who could have been ideal, or we're wasting precious time on ones that were never a good fit to begin with. In this episode, I'm sharing three real-world stories from my own business journey that reveal the hidden opportunities in client interactions you might be misjudging. These aren't hypotheticals—they're lessons hard-earned from decades of experience, and I want you to learn from them, not repeat them. You'll learn how to: Spot a sleeper opportunity disguised as a “tire-kicker.” Avoid the time-suck of clients who'll never convert. Reframe your qualifying mindset to one that protects revenue and positions your business for sustainable growth. This isn't about saying “no” faster—it's about saying “yes” smarter. So let's sharpen your lead-qualifying skills—because your future revenue depends on it. LuAnn Nigara's Ah-Ha Moments: “Qualifying is not about shutting the door. It's about asking the right questions so we can make an educated guess on whether we should open the door or not.” - LuAnn “I'm not going to sell you knock-off products here to save a few bucks, and now what? The home you come to for peace and recreation has broken blinds that need servicing every time you show up here?” - LuAnn “Don't you ever qualify a person, in or out, based on how they look when they walk into your store. Treat every person like your next VIP client—because they just might be.” - LuAnn A Big THANK YOU to Today's Podcast Sponsor: This episode is sponsored by Exciting Windows! Here's what you'll learn: ✔️ The Hesitation Trap—how subtle indecision is keeping you from success ✔️ How to step up as a leader and gain confidence in your decisions ✔️ Why hesitation kills sales (and the simple shift that will increase your closing rate) ✔️ The exact language to remove from your vocabulary today to start taking action It's time to stop “trying” and start “doing.” Listen now and take the challenge—commit to eliminating hesitation from your business today! Today With Amanda Smith: Hi, welcome to Window Treatments for Profit! In this episode, we're sitting down with Amanda Smith, a leader in the window treatment industry and co-founder of Seamless Workroom. From her start as a teacher to becoming a sought-after partner for interior designers, Amanda's story is a testament to the power of systems, efficiency, and a commitment to quality. More About Amanda Smith Like many others in this business, I did not start out as a fabricator of window treatments. I attended college at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte earning a bachelor's degree in Middle Grades Education. After teaching English and Social Studies for seven years, I attended graduate school earning a master's degree in library science at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and worked as a high school media specialist for three years until my twin boys were born in 1998. At which time I became a stay-at-home Mom. When my boys turned three, I knew I wanted to work but did not want to return to teaching full time. While visiting a friend one afternoon, I noticed she had new window treatments in her family room. It was an “ah ha” moment. I thought, “If I can make cocktail dresses, I can surely learn to make window treatments!” I come from a family that sews. My mother, an accomplished sewer and quilter, taught me the art at age 12. My father owned a successful auto upholstery business for 25 years. Both of my grandmothers and all of my aunts sewed. With my family's support, I set up a small workroom in an extra bedroom and completed my first job in July 2001. What started out as a small, retail business has grown into a full-service to the trade workroom offering fabrication of panels, valances, roman shades, bedding and decorative accessories as well as several lines of fabrics, hardware, shutters, blinds, roller shades, solar shades, and natural woven shades for those associated with the interior design industry. In July 2017 I, along with Rose Mary LeBlanc, launched a second business. Seamless Workroom is a workroom management system which helps to improve efficiency and productivity within the workroom for fabricators and designers in the industry. Today, I am excited to welcome Lisa Jones, owner of Lisa Jones Interiors and president of the Atlanta chapter of the WCAA.  Lisa started her business 25 years ago, but at her 17th she reached a breaking point—she decided either she was going to close up shop or make a big shift in her business. After joining the WCAA and listening to A Well Designed Business along with other industry podcasts, Lisa discovered how to transform her business and how to generate true profits. Today, she's sharing how she got there and why the support along the way made all the difference in the world. More About Lisa Jones Lisa Jones is the owner of Lisa Jones Interiors, Inc., a custom soft furnishings workroom serving both retail clients as well as interior designers. She's also a certified Window Treatment Specialist. Lisa started this business 25 years ago back in 1999 when she decided to leave her job as a legal assistant to be a stay-at-home mom for her girls. Lisa operates her business out of a studio on their small farm just south of Dalton, GA, serving clients mainly in the North Atlanta, Northwest Georgia and southeastern Tennessee area. Lisa was one of the 2022 recipients of the Jill Robson Memorial Scholarship for a workroom. She is also the recipient of multiple Vision Awards for both window treatment design and fabrication as well as slipcovers. She wants to elevate my business and work with clients who understand the value of investing in interior design. Despite having systems, processes, professional photography, and pricing that reflects her value, Melissa is struggling to attract her ideal clients, and that's where I come in!  During this strategy session, we'll dive deep and uncover what's holding Melissa back from achieving her goals. Tune in for insights, actionable tips, and real solutions to real problems. More About Melissa Fields Shades of Gray Design Studio is a boutique interior design studio based in San Antonio, Texas. It was started in 2018 shortly after Melissa Fields, the Founder and CEO, retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years of service. A retired Air Force officer turned interior designer, took her side hustle and deep passion for all things beautiful and developed it into a business. Melissa wanted to create amazing spaces for people who were going to stay in their homes long term and enjoy the investment they put into their space. She shifted her focus towards designing residential spaces. Although not formally trained, she is a passionate creative who not only has an eye for design but firmly believes and understands that the details matter. Melissa also knows the power of beautiful and intentional design to truly transform people on a mind, body, and soul level. Because Melissa is so obsessed with the details and a high level of quality, she wanted to have a solid foundation and obtained a certification in residential interior design through the New York Institute of Art and Design.
