The Zambian government has argued in the Supreme Court of Appeal that it relies on the common law of the country and the agreement that was reached between them and the family of former president Edgar Lungu. The agreement was to repatriate Lungu's body from South Africa for a state funeral and burial in Zambia. Advocate Ben Stoop for the Zambian government contends that all the country's presidents are buried at Embassy Park in Lusaka. The family of the 6th president of Zambia seeks to overturn the decision of the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria. The ruling found that Zambia is entitled to repatriate Lungu's remains for the purposes of a state funeral and burial. Advocate Stoop also contends that it is ill conceived to say the agreement was breached. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to SABC reporter Masiteng Makgala

Dan Lungu a publicat recent volumul „Sub gravitația memoriei. Reportaje (auto)biografice” (Editura Polirom).
The Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has dismissed with the Zambian's former president, Edgar Lungu family's bid for leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Appeals. The saga surrounding the repatriation of the body of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu back to his country for burial took a dramatic turn YESTERDAY. The family of the former leader filed papers for leave to appeal hours after Friday's High Court judgement that had ruled that Zambia's government can repatriate the body, despite his family's opposition. The dispute follows a long-standing feud between Lungu and his successor, President Hakainde Hichilema, with Lungu's family saying he had indicated that Hichilema should not attend his funeral. Handing down the ruling, judge Aubrey Ledwaba had earlier ordered Lungu's family to immediately surrender his body to authorities. For reaction Bongiwe Zwane spoke to Augustine Chisembele, Secretary General of the Zambia Association in South Africa

Zambia's former president, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, is demanding the immediate release of Fred M'membe, leader of the opposition Socialist Party. M'membe, a former journalist, was recently arrested by the police and charged with seditious practice for publishing an article entitled “Tshisekedi tells DRC Catholic Bishops about the $20 Million dollars Payout to buy Zambia's Silence" on the social media network X, formerly Twitter. The police say the article was aimed at turning public opinion against the government -- an accusation the opposition party denies. Frank Bwalya, Director General of the governing UPND's Presidential Campaign Media Support Program, tells VOA's Peter Clottey, the police must be allowed to carry out their constitutional duties without intimidation or harassment
On Daybreak Africa: Zambian police are accused of restricting former President Lungu's rights to free movement. Plus, the UN says South Sudan has made progress on a fuel tax impasse. Chad's Prime Minister asks the country's Constitutional Council to annul last week's election results. American singer and songwriter Stevie Wonder becomes the latest African American to officially take up Ghanaian citizenship. A Kenyan start-up produces water for dry communities out of air.. Analysts warn that costs would be great if the Israel-Hezbollah conflict were to escalate. For this and more tune to Daybreak Africa!
Kenya says it's confident the deployment of hundreds of its police to Haiti by January will end gang warfare in the country. Last year Haiti's government appealed for help because of spiralling gang violence. Kenya's Foreign Minister Alfred Mutua says it will be an intervention force to disarm what he called the "thugs and the gangs". So does Kenya really have the capabilities to help end Haiti's violence and how do Kenyan's feel about this deployment? Also, why Zambia's former President Edgar Lungu has been warned against jogging in public. The police have described his weekly workouts as "political activism". We hear from Mr Lungu's lawyer and get analysis on the wider political situation in the country. And how AI technology in South Africa is helping with immediate health concerns.
