John Humphrey and Aaron Alexander take a trip to Zamunda for the ultimate classic comedy experience—Coming to America! Directed by John Landis (The Blues Brothers, Trading Places), this Eddie Murphy-led masterpiece follows Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy, Beverly Hills Cop, Shrek) as he embarks on a journey to Queens, New York, to find a woman who will love him for who he truly is. Alongside his hilarious and ever-loyal best friend Semmi (Arsenio Hall, Harlem Nights, Black Dynamite), Akeem trades his royal lifestyle for a humble job at McDowell's, the fast-food restaurant that totally isn't McDonald's, all while attempting to win the heart of Lisa McDowell (Shari Headley, The Haves and the Have Nots). With an unforgettable supporting cast that includes James Earl Jones (Star Wars, The Lion King) as the commanding King Jaffe Joffer, John Amos (Good Times, Die Hard 2) as Cleo McDowell, and Madge Sinclair (Roots, The Lion King) as Queen Aoleon, the film delivers some of the most quotable moments in comedy history. We react to all of the legendary scenes, including Akeem & Semmi Arrive in Queens, The Barbershop Scene, The First McDowell's Encounter, Akeem Meets Lisa, Sexual Chocolate's Hilarious Performance, The Stolen Money Scene, The Bathing Scene, Semmi's Expensive Lifestyle, The Subway Proposal, and The Grand Wedding Reveal! This film not only gave us some of the best comedic performances but also introduced multiple iconic characters played by Murphy and Hall, showcasing their legendary range. And let's not forget the incredible soundtrack and cultural impact that made this film a staple of ‘80s cinema. Plus, with the sequel Coming 2 America continuing the story, we reflect on the franchise's legacy and how it holds up today! In our May-June 2020 issue, the scholar Aboubakar Sanogo wrote of Med Hondo, the late, great Mauritanian-French filmmaker: “For Hondo, decolonization and independence were not simply a matter of regime change from colonial to postcolonial, but rather a radical geopolitical and avant-gardist project. The cinema had its part to play in the realization of this emancipatory vision by liberating itself from all varieties of dominance, including those of form and tradition.” Hondo's brilliant and idiosyncratic ouevre is a testament to that emancipatory vision. From his debut feature Soleil O to the grand anti-colonial musical West Indies; from the collaborative immigrant documentary My Neighbors to the anti-police noir Black Light, Hondo's films are both formally ingenious and politically audacious. On March 22, Anthology Film Archives will kick off a weeklong retrospective of Hondo's works, including some brand-new restorations. The series is organized by none other than Aboubakar Sanogo, who joined us on today's episode to discuss Hondo's life and legacy.

[School of Movies 2023] Many would call this period the crowning glory of Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki in particular. The maturity and refusal to pull his punches that came with the rich, dark and complex Princess Mononoke illustrated that when it came to humankind's strained, abusive relationship with Nature itself, that bloodshed was an inevitability, He followed this up with a personal favourite of mine, Spirited Away in 2001, but we have a dedicated show on that coming at the very end of this series. 1997: Princess Mononoke (1m 45s) 1999: My Neighbors the Yamadas (51m 30s) 2002: The Cat Returns (1h 4m 30s) The other two are oddities; Yamadas was from Isao Takahata (of Grave of the Fireflies and Balls of the Raccoon) and it's a significant departure from all other Ghibli movies, in terms of animation style and content, being based heavily on a Japanese comic strip about family life. And following that we have Ghibli's only sequel to date, though tonally quite different from Whisper of the Heart, The Cat returns takes place in the same world. In the middle of our show there are feature essays from long-time friends of the show Brenden Agnew of Cinapse @BLCAgnew "Living With Miyazaki - Part 7" (34m 10s) Josh Garrity of Cane and Rinse @CombineHunter with his piece from a short-lived but extremely potent YouTube series "The Animation Archives - Part 4" (44m 30s)
It's time for the definitive countdown of the Japanese anime Studio Ghibli movies. And who better to review and rank all 22 of them than someone who just watched them all for the first time, all in a row?! That's right, Ben is tackling this epic task. With 4 decades of tradition and countless childhood memories of generations attached for so many fans, it seems this is the only fair way to analyze them. How disappointed will Phil be at his picks? Which films are more accessible to a first-time viewer, and which ones will tumble down the list? Eric and Jason have now come to the part in their Takahata reviews where they have to wrestle with the whole question of how to think about magical raccoons and their even more magical testicles, as they discuss Pom Poko. There's a lot to say about the film, with its commitment to ecological themes, its oddly despairing tone and its suitability next to Takahata's other films, but wow, those testicles are just so strange. Then they discuss My Neighbors the Yamadas, a kind of polar opposite film but also famously one of Studio Ghibli's few financial failures. Does the film's unique art style and quirky commitment to magical realism work for Eric and Jason? Well, they certainly have some thoughts... --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jason-sacks/message

“Alone In The Dark” es otra propuesta que maneja dichos elementos. Ejemplos: “Dead Space”, “Let 4 Dead”, “The Last Of Us”. Ejemplos: “Five Nights At Freddy's”. Ejemplos: “Dead By Daylight”, “Friday The 13th: The Game”. "The Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic Relief Prayer for My Neighbors" can be accessed at https://onlinediscipleshipforwomen.com/coronavirus-covid-19-pandemic-relief-prayer/#Prayer_for_My_Neighbors Dear God, I am praying for my neighbors. I want to ask for divine empowerment for everyone who surrounds me here at home with neighborly love, care, and friendship. God, you said in James 1 that in this world, we will have troubles. I pray that every neighbor here gets encouraged by you and can grow in their hope and become more steadfast in their faith. I pray that you draw my neighbors close to you through this experience and renew their minds every moment of every day so that they can see this pandemic as an opportunity to experience you, God. Abba, you are the God of all comfort and the Father of compassion who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from you, God (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). Father God, you have comforted me in many troubles. Allow me to comfort my neighbors with hope from you and faith in you. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

In this episode the Director's Club casts their attention to the wonderful worlds drawn by legendary animation Studio Ghibli - but not the director you expect! Because while director Isao Takahata was not as prolific as Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, he put together a remarkable run of films in his own right, ones which pushed anime into whole new stylistic realms while touching on Japanese history and folklore to explore themes of memory, belonging, responsibility, and creative artistic transformations. Joined by "Fresh Perspective" podcast alum and animation superfan Christine Sellin, we explore what's special in his work from his first film "Horus Prince of the Sun" through the legendary "Grave of the Fireflies" to his ultimate masterwork, "The Tale of the Princess Kaguya" [3:42] "Horus, Prince of the Sun" ("The Immigrant Song", Led Zeppelin) [20:52] "Panda! Go Panda!" (Theme from "Panda! Go Panda!") [30:38] "Gauche The Cellist" (6th Symphony, Ludwig van Beethoven) [45:15] "Grave of the Fireflies" ("Goodbye Blue Sky", Pink Floyd) [1:07:27] "Only Yesterday" ("Yesterday Girl", The Smithereens) [1:22:00] "Pom Poko" ("Big Balls", AC/DC) [1:39:46] "My Neighbors the Yamadas" ("Que Sera Sera", Sly and the Family Stone) [1:52:33] "The Tale of the Princess Kaguya" ("Wandering Spirit, Mick Jagger)
Let's be real, the top tier animation studios consist of Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios & Studio Ghibli. Co-founded by Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli has been able to consistently put out great content, with no lack in creativity or imagination. Studio Ghibli produces animated films made for both children and adults, and explores stories and themes not found in other movies. Their films usually tend to have environmental, anti-war themes, and often feature strong female characters. Studio Ghibli was truly ahead of its time, and maybe still is.Join Off the Highway regulars, Chazz, Wes and Sumner, as they are joined by their friend & editor Joli (The Lunch Table Podcast) as they begin a series on the Japanese anime legend, Studio Ghibli.Facebook // Twitter // InstagramFreeway ProductionsStudio Ghibli Feature Films:Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984)Castle in the Sky (1986)Grave of the Fireflies (1988)My Neighbor Totoro (1988)*Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989)Only Yesterday (1991)Porco Rosso (1992)Pom Poko (1994)Whisper of the Heart (1995)Princess Mononoke (1997)*My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999)Spirited Away (2001)*The Cat Returns (2002)Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)*Tales from Earthsea (2006)Ponyo (2008)The Secret World of Arrietty (2010)From Up on Poppy Hill (2011)The Wind Rises (2013)The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013)When Marnie Was There (2014)How Do You Live?
