Kim and Kara talk with Elizabeth Smart about being the person at the center of one of the most famous child abduction cases, connecting with fellow survivors, motherhood, and how taking control of her narrative has changed over the past 20 years.  The kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart was one of the most followed child abduction cases of our time. Elizabeth was abducted on June 5, 2002, and her captors controlled her by threatening to kill her and her family if she tried to escape. Fortunately, the police safely returned Elizabeth back to her family on March 12, 2003, after being held a prisoner for 9 grueling months. Through this traumatic experience, Elizabeth has become an advocate for change related to child abduction, recovery programs, and National legislation. Elizabeth triumphantly testified before her captor and the world about the very private nightmare she suffered during her abduction, which led to conviction. The Founder of the “Elizabeth Smart Foundation”, Elizabeth has also helped promote The National AMBER Alert, The Adam Walsh Child Protection & Safety Act and other safety legislation to help prevent abductions. Smart attended Brigham Young University, studying music as a harp performance major. She married her husband Matthew in 2012, and they now have three beautiful children. Elizabeth's example is a daily demonstration that there really is life after tragedy. Children's justice centers (CJCs) are child-friendly facilities where child victims of abuse are interviewed and medically assessed by professionals specifically trained in the forensic investigation of abuse. RISE (Restore Individual Self-Empowerment) Court is a court-sponsored program in the Akron, Ohio Municipal Court and is led by Judge Ron Cable. It was created to help adult female victims of human trafficking, prostitution, and sexual exploitation. Judge Cable began RISE to identify and help human trafficking victims and lead them as they create a new, positive path for themselves.Through the Akron Municipal Court's partnerships with outside agencies, RISE provides services such as trauma therapy, drug rehabilitation, housing, vocational sessions and other community support. Rebecca Bailey, PhD is a leading family psychologist and equestrian who has become a world-renowned professional teacher, speaker, author, and entrepreneur. In 2002, at 15 years old, Kara Robinson Chamberlain was kidnapped by and escaped from what she would later find out to be a serial killer. Kara's will to survive led to her escaping her captor and gathering information to identify her captor as the man responsible for at least three murders years earlier in Virginia. Following her experience, Kara formed relationships with law enforcement and went on to work with Richland County Sherif's Department as a school resource officer, investigator, and victim's advocate until the birth of her first child in 2013. Kara now now uses her experiences to speak to groups with the mission of spreading awareness, education and inspiration. Up next is Austin McGhie - Author of Find Your Difference, Challenging Conformity in Business and in Life.  Austin says there isn't a lot of science behind marketing.  There's lot of tracking and measuring, just not a lot of science beneath it.  Alan asks what it is that he teaches in his books?  Austin says, business at the end of the day is marketing.  Marketing is about positioning, and positioning is about difference.  Brands and businesses are built through differences.  What is the "secret sauce" in marketing? You want facts and figures.  You build your mountain of information.  Then make that intuitive leap off. But the real secret is imagination.  Austin shares why his book is split into three sections.  The first section explains how important difference is.  The second is a question, Why are you so afraid of difference? When Barbi was 6 years old, she began experiencing child sexual abuse at the hands of an extended family member. She first disclosed her abuse to a trusted high school teacher, who in turn helped her tell her parents. Barbi credits a large portion of her healing journey to the belief and support of those around her. Elizabeth experienced child sexual abuse as a child, and then she experienced the unthinkable—her own children were victimized. After a traumatic experience as a child, Amber turned to substance abuse to treat her trauma. This eventually led her into a relationship with a man who trafficked her. At one of the lowest moments of her life, Amber had a spiritual experience in a prison cell, which gave her the strength to seek the treatment she needed. The Malouf Foundation, established in 2016 by Kacie and Sam Malouf, exists to confront child sexual exploitation, including sex trafficking and online abuse, by providing education, promoting healing, and ensuring justice for survivors. Kacie Malouf is here today to discuss the important work the Foundation has been doing during the pandemic. KACIE MALOUF During the pandemic, we've seen the need skyrocket for the Malouf Foundation. Trafficking reporting has increased significantly, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children saw a ninety three percent increase in online enticement reports. One facet of the work our Foundation does is called OnWatch™. OnWatch™ is survivor-led training designed to empower you to spot, report, and prevent sex trafficking where you live, work, and play. It's the only survivor-led training out there. Through their personal experiences, plus the insight of industry experts, we teach the key indicators of trafficking, as well as how to support a survivor's path to freedom. The training is totally free and takes about one hour, and we're encouraging everyone to get trained over the holidays or this January, which is Human Trafficking Awareness Month. This training can help you save a life. Welcome to the "Let's Talk About Sex...Trafficking" Podcast where you will learn how to spot, report, and prevent trafficking. Every week you will hear our guests share real facts, real stories, and real ways you can help eradicate trafficking in the United States by 2030. This week Safe House Project co-founders, Brittany Dunn & Kristi Wells, are joined by survivor leader, Julie Whitehead.  Julie Whitehead is a survivor of 31 years of abuse, including child sexual abuse, domestic violence, and sex trafficking. Dr. James A. Chu, a nationally recognized researcher and professor of psychiatry at Harvard University, describes Julie's experiences as, “one of the most egregious histories of lifelong abuse I have encountered.”      Julie was raised in the picturesque town of Bountiful, Utah to a religious middle-class family and community. To most people, she appeared to be a typical happy child, but things were never quite as they seemed.   At four years old, someone close to Julie started sexually abusing her, which lasted until she was in her early teens. While one form of abuse ended, Julie was emotionally and physically abused for the next 12 years by her then-husband, who often encouraged her to take her own life.       With her marriage unraveling, trying to raise three children, and desperate to find hope, Julie started working as a preschool teacher in an upper-class community of northern Utah. It was during this time that a student's father befriended Julie and slowly gained her trust, promising her a new life of peace and hope—only to betray her. This man was a sex trafficker.      Every weekend for the next five months, Julie was trafficked in multiple U.S. states, out of the country, and even in her own home, where she was repeatedly threatened, drugged, and raped. On weekdays, she returned to her regular routine: taking care of her kids and working in the community. Julie lived two different lives until, one day, someone finally noticed her and helped her escape.     Despite 31 years of trauma, Julie is recovering and finds hope in the future with her husband, Barry, and six children. Today, she's an advocate for survivors of abuse and sex trafficking and inspires others with her remarkable courage. She's also an active speaker who focuses on bringing victims out of the shadows.      Julie and Barry serve on an advisory board for the Malouf Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in northern Utah dedicated to fight child sexual exploitation. They consult on a variety of initiatives for the Foundation including OnWatch™, a free digital training that raises community awareness of sex trafficking in the United States.       Through her experiences in middle-class America, Julie reveals the hidden aspects of abuse and darkest parts of sex trafficking, proving no one is immune to this American epidemic.   ------ Safe House Project's vision is to see communities across America unite to end domestic sex trafficking and restore hope and freedom to every survivor, while building a better future through preventing the spread of child sex trafficking.
