After being made redundant from Hilton Hotels during the pandemic with a new mortgage and young child, Jody Hayes transformed the crisis into an opportunity by launching his own business managing operational logistics for professional sports teams. When later facing another setback, Jody pivoted again by creating the Elite Sports Hotel Academy. In this episode, Jody and Kat discuss habit building, resilience, embracing change and how to find opportunities in life's challenging moments. KEY TAKEAWAYS Jody's redundancy from Hilton Hotels during the pandemic became the catalyst for starting his own business. When faced with uncertainty, Jody used a wall covered with 50 sheets of A4 paper as a makeshift whiteboard to brainstorm and visualise his business plans. He used the energy behind his anxiety to create a plan. After losing his biggest client, Jody had to adapt by pivoting to create an innovative online platform. The Elite Sports Hotel Academy was created, a digital solution that helps hotels better serve sports teams while creating a new revenue stream for Jody. Jody initially resisted the idea of digital transformation because it wasn't his original concept. Even though he was already an experienced entrepreneur, he still struggled with change. We can all gain time and avoid procrastination by putting boundaries in place with our phones. Scheduling in time blocks for set tasks has helped Jody be more productive and avoid time wasting often caused by switching tasks. Jody has built and sustains his resilience with small positive habits including mindful tech use, exercise, a better diet and quality family time. BEST MOMENTS "I think when we look at loneliness becoming one of the biggest challenges facing our society, you are actually massively contributing more than I think you realise." "When I reflect back, whilst I wasn't as calm as I could be, I still needed to provide for my family... after the initial shock, it was like let's calm down about this and let's start planning." "If you have an idea or knowledge or expertise that you want to share, but you're too afraid to share it, you're doing a disservice to all of these different groups of people who will benefit." "I have turned off all of my notifications on my phone. I control my phone, my phone doesn't control me and that's been so helpful for me." ABOUT THE GUEST Jody Hayes is the founder and driving force behind Haythorn Sports & Events, one of the UK leading providers of professional sports team logistics. With a extensive background in the worlds of Sport and Hotels, Jody has built a reputation for excellence in planning, logistics and execution. After graduating from the University of Chichester with a Sports degree, Jodys near 25 year career journey has seen him work for the Goodwood Estate, Southampton FC and Hilton Worldwide amongst others. His knowledge, drive and passion led him to founding Haythorn Sports & Events during the early stages of the pandemic and the business now in it's 5th year, has continued to grow and thrive ever since. Haythorn Sports LinkedIn ABOUT THE HOST Kat started her career as a teacher, before moving into Tech where she worked in different executive roles within teaching and consulting working across the globe, both in the public and private sector. Despite appearing 'successful' on the outside, she paid a heavy ‘life’ price. In 2016, her whole world collapsed. The reason? The compound effect of years of unhealthy and toxic habits that destroyed her health, relationship and career. She suffered a severe breakdown and lost everything. In the middle of this she got headhunted for her first CEO role. She rebuilt herself by changing just one small habit, and built a series of positive habits which has transformed her professional and personal performance, resulting in becoming the healthiest and happiest version of herself. She is a positive habits international keynote speaker and teacher, giving talks and delivering high impact programmes to organisations across the globe. LinkedIn Instagram

This episode of Cruising Altitude features a conversation with Brittany Polanco, Director of HR Innovation at Diageo, hosted by Nicole Alvino, CEO and co-founder of FirstUp. They discuss the critical role of leadership in shaping the energy and attitude of work, whether in-person or remote. Brittany shares insights on the importance of empowering leaders, co-creating employee experiences, and driving organizational innovation. They also explore the integration of AI in HR and the future of the HR function. Brittany, who has over 10 years of HR experience including roles at Hilton Worldwide and PepsiCo, emphasizes the need for leaders to have a clear vision and create environments that encourage creativity and collaboration. The episode touches on the importance of psychological safety, the nuances of employee experience, and the significance of continuous learning.Quotes*”Leaders who haven't been shown or given that empowerment creates a cycle of them not having that space to take ownership, to really drive results, to lead. And I think that ends up coming down to the team below them or the colleagues around them. So I really think that there's so much importance on the folks that you bring into your team and particularly the leaders that you bring in to be able to start this behavior. It has to start somewhere.”*”[On] the topic of employee experience, I am a neurodiverse leader. It's something that has played a big role in my career. I think it's been a tremendous strength for me and it also, I think, broadens my perspective when I think about the employee experience. And just as we as a society get more and more in tune with all the different facets of what that can mean and how we can support employees best, is definitely a passion point of mine.”*”Honestly, I think that at this point, employee experience is just a must-do for everyone at the company. I think that It's clear how competitive it is and what standards we need to have as an employer to attract and develop and retain the best talent.”*”In a world of what does ‘great' look like in employee experience, there is so much nuance. But I do believe that the more that you can allow each individual to bring their strengths and their creativity, and the more you make a structure where you appreciate and pull in the strengths and skills of those and other functions and other teams, that's what I've really appreciated.”*”There's something beautiful when you give yourself permission to be human. You know, we show up every day in these jobs and with these people who we spend so much time with. And the more we can embrace our full selves the more that we can really connect at a human level, I think the better the work, the better the experience.”Time Stamps[0:52] Meet Brittany Polanco, Director of HR Innovation at Diageo[4:26] Brittany's Role at Diageo[5:37] Understanding Diageo and Employee Personas[7:42] Challenges and Innovations in HR[11:14] The Importance of Employee Insights[17:03] Balancing Leadership and Employee Experience[23:23] Future of HR and AI IntegrationLinksConnect with Brittany on LinkedInLearn more about DiageoThanks to our friendsThis episode is brought to you by Firstup, the world's first intelligent communication platform. This strategy has diversified Hilton's portfolio and broadened its reach. In Q4 of 2023 alone, Hilton opened 24,000 new rooms, underscoring their commitment to expansion and market share growth. Customer satisfaction and loyalty have also been vital to Hilton's success. Their recently launched Hilton for Business program caters to small and medium-sized enterprises, further establishing Hilton's reputation as a trusted partner for businesses. Moving forward, Hilton aims to leverage favourable consumer trends. With travel demand robust, particularly from group and business transient segments, returning business transients and group bookings show a positive future growth outlook. There's also growth potential in the leisure transient market - a possibility Hilton plans to exploit. Strategic growth, supported by continued development, forms the cornerstone of Hilton's strategy. They plan to extend their pipeline and increase signings, particularly in luxury distribution. A key component of this strategy is a partnership with Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH), which will bring over 500 of SLH's unique, resort-oriented hotels into Hilton's portfolio. Nassetta emphasised that SLH is unique and doesn't conflict with or cannibalise Hilton's offerings. This partnership will enable Hilton to penetrate niche markets difficult to access otherwise. Furthermore, Hilton plans to enhance its food and beverage offerings and curate unique customer experiences, with a focus on the small and medium businesses served by their Hilton for Business program. In conclusion, Hilton's strong financial performance coupled with their strategic focus on product innovation, partnerships, and consumer needs paint an optimistic picture for future growth and success. By promoting organic growth and collaboration to pursue unique hotel collections and niche markets, Hilton is poised to deliver increased stakeholder value and strengthen its industry leadership position. Dawn Hawkins, CEO of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, highlighted a pressing issue - big tech's role in the proliferation of sexual exploitation. Bush, and was first featured on Fox News after directing the campaign strategy of Republican Dave Brat's historic primary upset of Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor. In the same period, he also won 185 out of 202 local zoning referenda, as well as dozens of Planning Commission and Supervisor votes, preventing developments that would have saddled communities not only with massive traffic jams, but also with flooding and erosion. -Dawn Hawkins is CEO of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, the leading organization exposing the connections between all forms of sexual exploitation, including sex trafficking, prostitution, pornography, and child sexual abuse. Dawn's energy, creativity and mobilization skills are deployed to build a world free from sexual violence, with freedom and human dignity for all.Dawn is deeply committed to bipartisan public policy solutions at the federal and state level. Today's guest is very keen on visualizing spaces in 3 dimensions. He also holds state licenses in architecture and interior design. Vito Lotta is the Vice President of Architecture & Design at Hilton Worldwide. Vito joins the host Dan Ryan for the first-ever live, in-person episode of Defining Hospitality! Vito shares his journey through the hospitality industry starting with using a drafting board that his father had all the way to being an integral part of Hilton.   Takeaways:  Boredom is an excellent state of mind to be in because it allows you to really drill down into your imagination. It's hard to be imaginative if your mind is constantly coming up with new things. Being in the hospitality industry is providing a certain level of service to your customers, such as teaching guests who can't dance how to dance and better themselves and providing them with an unforgettable experience. To improve yourself for your company and your personal life, it's best to focus on your strengths and hone those skills to be even better. Hilton is going in a unique direction where it's going to be more playful, energetic, and younger.  When it comes to innovation, there are technical, digital, and physical spaces to it all now. You need to find a way to incorporate all those aspects into your design. We still live in an analog world. There are millions of apps out there but they aren't the answer to coming up with a great design space.  There are different levels of privacy that guests might want that you can integrate into your hotels. Some guests might want more privacy by using an alias while others might not care as much. Quote of the Show: 16:50 “we're in the business of hospitality. You're supposed to use your gift of dance to make our customers, our guests feel as elegant and graceful as they aspire to be.”   Links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vito-f-lotta-464228/ Website: https://www.hilton.com/en/corporate/   Shout Outs: 27:13 American Institute of Architects  32:24 Know Your Strengths by Donald Clifton and Marcus Buckingham 34:40 David Goggins 44:33 Getty's Group 46:04 Larry Traxler 46:05 Hyatt 46:56 Gensler 50:12 Hotel of Tomorrow 50:37 Ron Swidler 50:51 Rodd Kidley 52:08 Oculus 1:00:54 Wayne's World Ways to Tune In:  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419 Podbean: https://www.defininghospitality.live/ YouTube : https://youtu.be/SWU9VheTiYs

Mitch is the President and CEO of Vision Hospitality Group. The company holds a growing portfolio of hotels affiliated with brands such as Hilton and Marriott, including the company's first boutique hotel, The Edwin in Chattanooga, TN. We used to do ‘after action reports' after big events. They were meetings and reports to discuss what happened, what went wrong and what went right. We'd include several departments and managers to make sure we covered as many bases as possible, then made sure to share learnings with everyone, and have the report available to reference for the next big event. As the summer travel season of 2022 comes to a close, and the hospitality industry (perhaps) takes a moment to breathe after record occupancies and tight staffing, there is now news of another economic storm that could derail its fragile recovery.  This episode could be looked at as an after action report of sorts. Mitch takes us through his company's experience not just over the past couple of years but over several previous crises, what they've learned that made them stronger and how they're approaching the litany of challenges that continue to emerge. We touch on finances, consumer behavior, staffing and most crucially, how company culture is the linchpin to it all. About MitchMitch Patel founded Vision Hospitality Group, Inc. in 1997 with a mere $3,000 in his savings account. Under his leadership as President and CEO, Vision holds a growing portfolio of hotels affiliated with premium brands such as Hilton Worldwide and Marriott International, including the company's first boutique hotel, The Edwin in Chattanooga, TN. Mitch has led Vision to be the recipient of many awards, as well as industry media recognition in the fields of development, community service, design, and achievement. Most recently, Vision received the Marriott International Development Partner of the Year Award- Full Service, Marriott International Partnership Circle Award, the Marriott International Serve 360 Award, the Developer of the Year Award for the Hampton Brand by Hilton Worldwide, and the Multi-Brand Developer of the Year Award by Hilton Worldwide.  Mitch serves on the Marriott International Franchise Advisory Council and the Hilton Worldwide Owner's Advisory Council. Mitch maintains his presence on boards of local organizations that support education and economic development in Vision's hometown of Chattanooga, TN. He also serves as the Vice Chair of the Convention and Visitor's Bureau and is an advocate for ending human trafficking in the hospitality industry. His efforts have earned him nationwide recognition, which includes his most recent honor of receiving the NSDAR Americanism Award.  Mitch holds a Bachelor's degree and Master's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Tennessee.  Linkshttps://www.vhghotels.com/ (https://www.vhghotels.com) --- For past episodes, show notes or if you've got a story that might make a great episode, head over to https://www.theprovenprinciplespodcast.com/ (theprovenprinciplespodcast.com). Today's guest is responsible for guiding the design of all North American projects for the Canopy, Tempo and Motto brands at Hilton. He has a fabulous eye for interior design and it shows in his work. Barry Sullivan is The Senior Director of Lifestyle at Hilton Worldwide. Barry joins host Dan Ryan to share his #hospitality journey and what it all means to him.  Takeaways:  Hospitality is about making others feel comfortable in a place that is unfamiliar to them or a new environment. You want them to find the versions of the things they find familiar in a new setting. People gravitate towards areas that they are most comfortable with. You want to create a sense of comfort with them. A soft brand is a hotel that can be whatever it wants to be but the infrastructure might not be all the same. As your business grows, you need to keep your passion alive and be involved enough for it to grow in the right direction and not lose sight of the ultimate goal and culture. The pandemic has made some projects go on longer than were originally planned, so you want to make sure you are ready for a project to be extended in certain cases. It's a rewarding experience to see a hotel from the beginning all the way to the finished project. How you treat your team members is how they will treat guests. You want to make sure you are taking care of the team so they can give the guests their best experiences. Quote of the Show:   12:16 “Hospitality is making people feel comfortable, or my definition is making them feel comfortable, welcome, and warm in an environment that's not their own.” Links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/barry-sullivan-04933637/ Website: https://www.hilton.com/en/corporate/ Shout Outs: 0:57 Steve Higgins 1:11 Jim Northcut 2:04 Linda Ronstadt 2:13 Harry Dean Staton 2:19 Kevin Bacon 2:43 Eda Hallinan 2:50 Armistead Maupin's “Tales of the City” 6:03 Wimberly 31:44 Larry Traxler 32:29 Sue Firestone 32:42 Design One 32:57 James Northcut Associates 42:24 Margaret McMahon 44:05 Small Giants by Bo Burlingham 49:54 Chris Nassetta 51:14 Conrad Hilton Ways to Tune In:  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419 Podbean: https://www.defininghospitality.live/ Youtube : https://youtu.be/_VMn34qsFXo Defining Hospitality is produced by Ringmaster, on a mission to create connections through B2B podcasts. This episode tries to fill in the blanks as Glenn, who started as a busboy at a Holiday Inn, talks about his journey up the ladder to eventually developing and managing a hotel. He shares great insight into the mechanics of how his company came to be, the pivot they made when they saw an opportunity to grow, how they went about financing their hotel and the lay of the land today as we emerge from this last downturn. About Glenn Wellengood President & CEO Glenn Malone co-founded the hotel management and development firm in 2002.  As Executive, Malone plays an integral role in expanding the company's long term hotel development, operations and ownership portfolio.
