This week Efy shares with us from Galatians 5 all about real freedom found in Jesus.
My friend McKay Mayes (from Wyoming, London South RM, Age 29, Lives/Works in Utah County) joins us to share his story including: Always believing/hoping he would be fixed and be straight Great mission experience—but still gay Not fitting the typical gay stereotype Dating and trying to make it work with a woman—wanted to follow God's plan—super painful not finding a way to make that possible Feeling “left behind” as straight friends got married For six years, committed to being single in line with the Church's celibate guidance—leading to the darkest/most painful moments of McKay's life New prayers (instead of “fix me”) Finding hope, acceptance of being gay, and purpose in his new path Relationship with the Church and hopes for changes First coming out experience (super helpful) I continue to be amazed by the brave/mature/thoughtful people who share their stories on the podcast—with McKay joining that group—and his desire to give hope to others walking a similar road. Thank you, McKay, for all you have done to bless/help the lives of others (mission, EFY counselor, etc) and continue to do so with your courage to be out/honest and be on the podcast to give hope to others. You are a good man with a great life ahead of you! My friend Kelsey Wells (RM, from Idaho, lives in Utah County, former EFY counselor and seminary teacher, active in her ward) joins us to bravely share her story. Kelsey starts with coming out to her mother (senior year of high school) and the good/difficult experiences—including how not talking about it brings shame. Kelsey talks about wanting to service a mission but putting that on pause because she realized she was not doing that for the right reasons. Kelsey shares what changed and how she ended up serving. Kelsey bravely talks about getting engaged to a man and how that engagement ended a few weeks before the wedding. Kelsey talks about ignoring red flags because of her desire to get married and have a family. Kelsey talks about being in the Temple and a sealer sharing some thoughts that gave her clarity and courage to end the engagement. Kelsey talks about not wanting to be alive—but finding hope in Christ, therapy and the Questions From the Closet podcast. Kelsey also talks about “fear is where Satan thrives”. Kelsey talks about why she stays a member of the Church, joy in being a EFY councilor and teaching seminary, and helping others find hope. Thank you Kelsey for being on the podcast. You are so emotionally and spiritually mature. You are also so brave. You being open helps others walking this road and helps us better create Zion. My friend Matt Higinbotham (RM from Tempe Arizona, returned Feb 2024, from Utah County, BYU student) joins us to share his story as a gay Latter-day Saint. Matt talks about his early years figuring out his sexuality and his journey to realize (and then accept) he is gay. Matt talks about the role of prayer, scripture study, and temple attendance to help feel God's love, acceptance, hope for his future and the desire to serve/help others (a big reason he did the podcast). Matt talks about his desire to serve a mission and how that hope eventually became a reality—all while being open with his church leaders about his sexual orientation. Matt talks about the positive and painful experience of being gay and on a mission. Some the negative ones were around gay jokes (missionaries and members) and some of the positive ones were where being open about being gay allowing him to help others know they too could feel God's love, and acceptance. Matt talks about how navigating a variety of experience (including Church leader talks that were painful), being an EFY counselor (and teaching the Family Proclamation), seeing the Y lit up in pride colors, unfairness (compared to straight members) of being gay (and not having a path to have a marriage and still fully participate in the Church). I learned so much from Matt—a thoughtful, spiritually mature, deeply insightful, and remarkable man. You are a good man Matt with a wonderful future. Thank you for blessing so many people on your mission and doing this podcast which will give others hope—and help us better love and support each other as we build Zion. He got his Masters Degree in School Counseling from Northern Arizona University. Tanner has over six years of EFY experience and another five working as a wrangler for troubled teenagers at Arivaca Boys Ranch. He currently is serving as the bishop in his ward in Morenci, Arizona, where he developed a youth program called "I Can Do Hard Things" to help drive kids off the couch and into living life and preparing for the temple/mission. Tanner's passions include rock climbing, scuba diving, playing Jenga with kids, losing to his bros in fantasy football, and cuddling his little daughter Cedar. This program, developed while he served as a counselor in the bishopric, aims to provide youth with structured goals across the four quadrants in the Children and Youth program: spiritual, social, intellectual, and physical. Tanner explains how he drew inspiration from scouting and other youth programs to create a comprehensive list of activities that encourage youth to step outside their comfort zones and engage in meaningful experiences. Throughout the conversation, Tanner discusses the importance of parental buy-in and how the challenge has positively impacted the culture of his small ward, which previously struggled with youth engagement and missionary work. He highlights the success of the program, noting that it has led to increased participation among the youth and has even inspired similar initiatives in other organizations within the ward. The episode emphasizes the significance of celebrating achievements, as Tanner describes the award ceremony where participants receive recognition for their hard work, fostering a sense of community and accomplishment. Leadership is about empowering others to reach their potential, and Tanner's approach serves as a practical example for other leaders looking to inspire and uplift the youth in their wards. 05:48 - Tanner's Background and New Calling 06:59 - The "I Can Do Hard Things" Challenge 09:47 - Overview of the Youth Program and Goals 10:44 - Changing the Culture in the Ward 12:01 - Structure of the Challenge 20:49 - Breakdown of the Challenge Areas 25:07 - Physical Challenge Activities 27:51 - Social Challenge Activities 29:38 - Spiritual Challenge Activities 30:49 - Intellectual Challenge Activities 32:04 - Importance of Accountability 33:01 - Reward Ceremony and Recognition 34:27 - Encouraging Participation and Buy-In The award-winning Leading Saints Podcast is one of the top independent Latter-day Saints podcasts as part of nonprofit Leading Saints' mission to help Latter-day Saints be better prepared to lead. My friend Ben Bernards (lives in Sacramento, RM, current Bishopric member, author, podcaster, EFY speaker, early 40s) joins us to share their family story. This story started with three children — a daughter and then two sons — but now continues with 3 daughters, as both of their sons are transgender. Ben talks about how he and his wife Megan are navigating this road to support their transgender and cisgender children, with powerful insights for anyone looking to support someone who is transgender Ben shares deeply spiritual experiences and powerful insights when each daughter came out at different stages in their lives, and the surprising feelings of calm and peace they felt each time. Ben talks about their goal to preserve the family relationships and walk with their transgender daughters—and also deeply spiritual experiences on how much our Heavenly Parents love Ben's daughters—and how everyone is created in their image. Ben talks about how being “safe person” for them gave them courage to come out, when they were scared to do so. Ben talks about open ended questions like “how long have you felt this way” and “how best can I support you” to keep the conversation going. Ben also talks about grief/loss of changing family expectations—including the lives he once imagined as a father of two sons. Ben talks about the need for community of other LDS parents with transgender children. Ben continues with how the recent handbook changes (Aug 2024) negatively impact transgender Latter-day Saints and how the “border drawn in a new location and how his transgender daughters are now outside”. My heart aches as I see the painful impact of these handbook changes on LDS families with transgender members. Thank you, Ben (and your whole family), for sharing your story. It is a beautiful family love story. Thank you for giving all insights on how to better understand, see, and support our transgender/non-binary friends. Honored to have you on the podcast. ABOUT KENNETH COPEKenneth Cope is an American composer and performer of religious music geared towards Latter-day Saints. Hisy first solo album, Heaven—Don't Miss It For The World (released in 1988), was created out of this desire to make music to help strengthen the youth of the Church. I also continued to work on EFY recordings. Then came Greater Than Us All (1989), with the songs “His Hands” and “Never a Better Hero.” In 1991, I released another contemporary album titled Voices, with the song “Face to Face.” Then came the theme-based projects: My Servant Joseph (1993) and Women at the Well (1995). These were followed by Stories from Eden's Garden (1998), A Prayer unto Thee (1999), Joseph Smith—the Seer (2000), and Hear My Praise (2002). In 2005, the record company released Face to Face—Kenneth Cope Collection. My most recent full album was born in 2008, titled All About You. And in 2012, I most recently created three new contemporary inspirational songs for the youth of the Church to go along with the year's youth theme…the EP is called Rise and Shine.Cope lived in Houston, Texas, during his high school years and attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. He served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Switzerland and France from 1980 to 1982. He currently resides in Salt Lake City, Utah and has served as a bishop. He has been closely associated with the music of Especially for Youth (EFY), with seven EFY albums having songs he composed.Kenneth and his wife have three children KENNETH COPE SOCIALSKenneth's Website - http://kennethcope.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/kenneth.m.cope/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/kenneth.cope SON OF MAN MUSICIAL SOCIALSSon of Man Musical - https://sonofmanmusical.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/sonofmanmusicalKickstarter - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1606969623/son-of-man-the-musical-two-album-cast-recording ABOUT PAUL CARDALLWebsite - www.paulcardall.com/podcastFacebook - @paulcardallmusicIG - @paulcardallTwitter - @paulcardallYoutube - @cardall Paul Cardall, a Dove Award-winning musician, composer, and producer, has earned acclaim from Forbes, which notes that his music creates an atmosphere for relaxation, reflection, and meditation. Utah musician Peter Breinholt and Paul Cardall, raised in the umbrella of Mormonism, and host Paul Cardall explore the history of commercial Mormon music, Latter-Day Saint culture and theology. Growing up under the umbrella of Mormonism, they discuss the differences in how they were raised. Paul comes from an orthodox home in Salt Lake City where his family was active in all the cultural and theological teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS). Whereas, Peter grew up outside of Utah and didn't have an active family. He moved to Utah, started a band, and evolved into an active Latter-Day Saint.Peter explains that there are Mormons making Mormon-themed music for Mormons sold at LDS bookstores, and then there are popular bands or singers who happen to be LDS. Paul summarizes how popular LDS-themed music has become; it's a multi-million dollar industry. Peter clarifies that in Utah, where LDS headquarters are, because of the social network that the Church provides, when things catch on, it's like a wildfire. There are mega trends in Mormonism.Paul talks about pioneer immigrants who wrote hymns using the contemporary style of their time. They mention that even though there is a commercial music culture, the church itself is rather strict on what they present in worship services called Sacrament Meetings, and full-time missionaries are allowed to listen to. Electric guitars and drums aren't allowed in services. Missionaries were allowed to listen to the Tabernacle Choir and some piano music, like Paul. Today, missionaries can listen to whatever helps them feel the spirit of God, though leaders are still cautious. As the church evolved in the 80s, there was Michael McLean, a songwriter who produced a series of videos promoting church doctrine. Missionaries would take those to those who saw the ad on TV. They talk about Mormon ad campaigns in the 70s and 80s. The songs in the ads were a huge part in persuading people emotionally and had a significant influence on the direction commercial Mormon music proceeded.Peter and Paul talk about the Osmonds, the most popular LDS musicians in the 20th century. Their fifth studio album that was on the Billboard charts is called “The Plan.” Their concept album was an opportunity for The Osmonds to share Mormon theology. There have been people who have joined the church as a result of their love for Donny Osmond. They skip ahead a few decades to talk about another famous band, The Killers, whose lead singer Brandon Flowers is a devout Mormon. In the late 1970s, early 80s, Afterglow was a blockbuster duo whose songs were rich with harmonies. They were one of the first to have a record deal with the church-owned bookstore, called Deseret Book. Their music was overly religious with strict LDS themes. Deseret Book at the time had hundreds of stores along with hundreds of independent stores by people who sold LDS related products. Record labels began to pop up.Peter brings up Kenneth Cope, whose voice was featured in some of those Mormon ads. Kenneth wrote and recorded some of the most successful commercial Mormon music. All of this is happening while Amy Grant in the Christian market or Gospel Music Association was becoming successful, and her Christian-themed music crossed over into the adult contemporary top 40. Greater Than Us All was Kenneth's successful debut with His Hands and Never A Better Hero. My Servant Joseph was another hit album about with songs about LDS founder Joseph Smith. Kenneth takes his responsibilities in the church seriously and when he was called to be a Bishop, in a church with no paid ministry, we didn't hear much from Kenneth Cope until recently. He'd spent 15 years producing a new musical called "Son of Man."Along with Kenneth, Michael Webb recorded similar LDS themed songs and has since left the church. Paul says one of his favorite songs is a new Christian song by Michael Webb. Peter and Paul explore artists Julie De Azevedo, Felicia Sorensen, and other successful female artists who started to emerge in the 90s. Julie is the daughter of Lex de Azevedo, who was successful at writing LDS musicals like "Saturday's Warrior," and "My Turn on Earth." He started a record label that signed Kenneth Cope, Michael Webb, Julie, and others. Julie became a popular therapist and podcast host helping countless LDS women understand their value. They mention Hillary Weeks and move into a conversation about Jeff Simpson, a former Disney producer. Jeff was ambitious in helping take LDS music forward into a more contemporary and overall style. He had a vision to make LDS music part of the broader Christian market under the Gospel Music Association. But Jeff's label Excel was never successful because of the differences. He was successful at creating a film production and distribution entity with the breakout hit "God's Army" by Richard Dutcher. Excel would later sell to Deseret Book. He also created an award show called "The Pearls" honoring LDS music. Before talking about cellist Steven Sharp Nelson, Peter mentions Nashville Producer Jason Deere who created the Nashville Tribute Band, which was country music with LDS themes. Cellist Steven Sharp Nelson, who is now a member of YouTube sensation The Piano Guys, worked on hundreds of albums by members of the LDS faith. Peter shares how he met Steve and began using him in his band. Later, Paul used Steve to orchestrate his music with another brilliant LDS artist, Marshall McDonald. Both Marshall and Steven worked as a team to help dozens of artists. Paul invited Steve to let him produce "Sacred Cello" for Paul's label Stone Angel Music. Steve didn't believe it would be successful, but the album debuted No. 18 on the Billboard Classical Charts. Steve is an artist who shared the burden with artists that occurs in the studio and on the stage. Paul shares with Peter the countless LDS artists who created LDS-themed albums that debuted on the Billboard charts. Deseret Book began reporting sales to Soundscan."Especially For Youth" is the next topic. The weeklong camp on Brigham Young University's campus and dozen other colleges across the United States gathered LDS Youth from all over. EFY gave these LDS teenagers a 12-song compilation that featured a cassette, CD of LDS artists who wrote songs about the camp theme. Every kid received one. EFY music began in 1986 and continued until 2019 before the LDS Church changed the youth program. In the 80s not only did you have Michael McLean, Kenneth Cope, and Julie De Azevdeo, but over the decades, artists evolved out of these produced EFY albums. Why? They were approved by the church since the program was under BYU, a church-owned private university. Not everyone appreciated the songs, but the production was top quality. However, producers and artists were not given the standard music industry fees. Peter wanted to get involved and was at a point in his career where the LDS church listened to him. He recruited Jon Schmidt, Steven Sharp Nelson's partner in The Piano Guys, to produce an authentic album of songs. However, they were restricted by several policies. Peter produced one more several years ago with songwriter Russ Dixon from the Utah group Colors. Concerts were also performed, and youth looked forward to it. Overtime EFY did away with the concerts because leaders felt there was too much attention drawn to the artists. There was one theme song that was the EFY “We Are The World” that brought the popular artists who were LDS together called, “Especially For Youth.” Mormons who go to the Temple make covenants that they'll donate all their time and talents to building up the Church. As a result, artists felt an obligation to do things for free or for very little pay. They discuss firesides, which are special events inside a church building. In the beginnings, Churches wanted firesides, but overtime fewer and fewer musicians were invited to perform their music about God. Peter shares his experience being asked to perform for LDS leaders and bring his band, only they wouldn't pay for anything. Peter would have to pay his band out of his pocket.Peter and Paul share their frustration as an artist who doesn't do LDS themed music. Because he lent his voice to a few LDS themed songs, the music platform's algorithm made him an LDS artist and recommends other LDS artists instead of the Americana Folk artists. Paul also shares his frustration that new material still references artists that the metadata feels is comparable to when Paul started in 1995. Paul talks about doing an album with Steele Croswhite, who was not LDS, and slowly the culture started working with people of other Christian denominations.Paul talks about his experience speaking and performing at a Missionary Fall social attended by Apostles Russell M. Nelson and Elder David A. Bednar. A previous 70s prophecy by President Spencer Kimball invited LDS members to create the very finest artist, particularly because he believed they have all the truth. He showed the apostles the classical Billboard charts that had 5 out of 10 people who were LDS. He showed that his prophecy was being fulfilled. Afterward, Elder Bednar invited Paul to write a song with him. Paul worked with Steven Sharp Nelson and Marshall McDonald to produce Paul and David Bednar's office song "One by One." Paul would later present Elder Bednar with a plaque showing he was part of a No. 1 Billboard charting album. Paul would perform this piece with LDS tenor Nathan Pacheco. Paul discusses the positive experience of doing business with Elder Bednar and the corporate church concerning owning the master rights to their song. Paul learned that Apostles do not take a royalty. If so, it goes directly to the church missionary department.Peter talks about Trina Harmon, a Nashville songwriter who isn't LDS, has helped several Mormons evolve as writers and artists. She complimented LDS members but said she's not yet met an LDS artist who is truly aligned with the mission of the Church. The LDS Church demands a lot of service and rules, leaving artists at odds in creating music. Paul agrees and says that anyone, LDS or not, who creates music that points people to Jesus Christ is important. They briefly discuss Paul Simon who is getting older and producing an album about his relationship with God. Maturing popular artists lean into producing faith-based recordings. Artists need to speak to the struggles. Peter talks about his daughter choosing to go on a mission and his concern that it could go one or two ways. Missionaries lean in or when they return, get out of the church.Paul shares Christian artist Andrew Peterson, who like Peter Breinholt, built a community of artists within a cultural context. In Mormon culture, there's a little bit of reluctance towards charismatic musicians. When Peter was connecting with the youth in a fireside, the leader stood up to make sure the audience understood that Peter is not someone who they need to look up to, but to look up to God. Leaders tend to put down artists. A leader cornered Peter to ask him if he's a kingdom builder or a Peter builder. They discuss Mormon theology about being ordained Kings and Queens, so there's a sense of looking down on those who aren't anointed joint heirs with God. Paul shares that he needed to strip away all the idols and ideology that stood in the way of having a full relationship with Christ. Paul believes in the Four Gospels over any new revelation from those who claim to be God's prophets. The Four Gospels are 4 eye witnesses of the Resurrected Lord who disagree on the details, but they all tell the same story. He goes into talking about the Codex Vaticanus and the other codexes that were used by St. Jerome to give the world the Latin Vulgate. Paul gets into why he doesn't believe in a Church that he loves with all his heart. They talk about Joseph Smith's first vision narrative that the Church has been teaching for hundreds of years, that even LDS scholars say that narrative can't be sustained. It's simply not true. Peter says that artists deconstruct. It's why artists write songs, to say something they can't say with words. They compose how they feel. They discuss challenges in Mormon doctrine. Paul talks about one of the Christian churches he attends called Immanuel Nashville with Pastor TJ Tims. Artists analyze everything.Paul and Peter end by setting up part two. ABOUT PETER BREINHOLTPeter Breinholt is well-known performer in the Salt Lake region and became so largely through word-of-mouth. His debut record became the best-selling independently released CD ever in the state of Utah, and was described a decade after it's release as "an underground classic" by Salt Lake Magazine. Peter has performed for countless sold out crowds in every major concert hall in the state, including Kingsbury Hall, Tuacahn and Sundance. Utah Governor Gary Herbert recently honored Peter with the Governor's Mansion Award for Achievement in the Performing Arts for his influence as a songwriter and performing artist.

Brigham Young was the second prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and who Brigham Young University was named after. Brigham is known for a LOT of heinous actions against the saints, so it shouldn't come as a surprise when learning about the abhorrent policies of the school. Since Kirsten went there, it's only gotten slightly better. Find out what these students have to go through just to get an education. We also go into what EFY/FSY is, and why it was/is problematic for the youth who attend. Stay tuned for our next episode together, where we discuss how Kirsten leaves Mormonism and ends up an employee at a sketchy nudist club masquerading as a buddhist temple. An interview with Wayne Burton, a Lds Singer and Songwriter visits with me to discuss his music and how He has been given Eyes to see. Wayne's music is found in church bookstores everywhere and featured on numerous LDS radio programs. His songs have been performed by groups in North America, Europe and Asia. Wayne performed as part of the 2002 Winter Olympics music festival, and in many locations beyond the US and Canada including Hong Kong and Mexico. He has lectured at BYU Education Week and has won the first place Award of Distinction in the General Church music contest four times in recent years. He has also had ten of his songs used on six albums for the popular EFY program and his youth song "A Light to the World", based on President Nelson's memorable youth broadcast was published in the June 2020 New Era Magazine. In all Wayne has contributed music to 25 other LDS albums besides his own solo projects. Wayne and his family reside in Southern Alberta where he is practicing family medicine. and raising his children. After serving as Stake Young Men's President and then on the Stake High Council, he now serves in his ward Elder's Quorum presidency. He and his wife Jasmine have five children.
Today I interview John Hilton iii, a religious education professor at BYU and the author of various books and teaching courses. John talks about his experience gaining a testimony as a child was largely motivated by his desire to read and fully understand scripture. John explains how during one special EFY as a 15-year-old, John felt that the Holy Ghost had "written on his heart" that the things he was testifying of were true. That feeling of the Holy Ghost has followed him throughout his life and motivated him to make good life decisions like serving a mission in Denver, Colorado for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, choosing to be a seminary teacher, and establishing fence laws for himself surrounding dating. John's vast understanding of gospel literature helps him to give some incredible advice in this episode about feeling close to God, preparing to serve a mission, and gaining a testimony. I hope you enjoy! https://johnhiltoniii.com/Check out his website!
Does family scripture study sometimes feel like more of a battle than you'd like? Do you struggle to keep your teens engaged? This is the episode for you! Kristen Walker Smith is a co-host of the One Minute Scripture Study podcast, a Deseret Book masterclass teacher, BYU Education Week speaker, EFY teacher, former seminary teacher and bestselling author. Kristen graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from BYU where she met her darling husband of almost 20 years; they are the parents of three wonderful, rascally children. We review the talks by emeritus Seventy member Elder Joseph W. Sitati and Young Men General President Steven J. Lund. The theme is discipleship and how to keep those patterns in your life especially after experiencing those spiritual highs in life.

Kathryn Davis, host of the new Magnify podcast, does not claim to be an expert on teenagers but she does have a few teenagers of her own and she does teach a lot more in her seminary classes each day. She has also been involved for years with the EFY and now FSY programs, and even worked with Stephen Covey to help implement and train the "7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens" into her high school curriculum. In short, while Kathryn may not consider herself an expert, she has definitely spent enough time with teenagers to speak to what they are like and why she absolutely loves them. 1:30- An Unexpected Seminary Teacher 5:55- Tips For Teaching Teens 7:44- Isaiah 12:02- How To Connect 13:54- Kathryn's Kids 15:47- The Daunting Task of Parenting Teenagers 19:29- What Has Changed About Parenting Teens? 23:14- Do We Even Know What They're Up Against? 28:12- Bullying 33:05- Space For Conversations 37:10- Tough Questions in the Classroom 39:24- Enjoy Them 41:42- What Does It Mean To Be All In the Gospel of Jesus Christ? “Can we, as adults...and as members of the Church, embrace them and create a safe place for them where they are enough? Because them plus Christ is enough. We're not enough on our own but with Christ, we are.” Magnify Podcast- https://www.magnifythegood.com/podcast President M. Russell Ballard quote- "Gone are the days when a student asked an honest question and a teacher responded, 'Don't worry about it!' Gone are the days when a student raised a sincere concern and a teacher bore his or her testimony as a response intended to avoid the issue. Gone are the days when students were protected from people who attacked the Church. Fortunately, the Lord provided this timely and timeless counsel to you teachers: 'And as all have not faith, seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom; seek learning, even by study and also by faith.'" Elder Jeffrey R. Holland quote- "And if those children are unresponsive, maybe you can't teach them yet, but you can love them. And if you love them today, maybe you can teach them tomorrow." Joe and Smith sometimes ask each other questions to which they already know the answer. More Utah municipality talk. Smith is feeling a bit off and tries to re-center himself with a calming rendition of Cotton-eye Joe. The guys play a round of finger, mercenary, kiss with Nolan Batman villains, and then another round of candlelight dinner, church dance, eternal marriage with characters from The (Diggery) Batman. The guys surmise that the Joker would not be a very loyal Tenenbaum. Why does it feel so good to feel bad? It's so comforting sometimes. Joe recommendation: American Crime Story: Impeachment. Bane reads us a quote from Dallin Oaks about apologies. Joe Smith was a fast-talker, an artist of misdirection. 4'33” is a composition by experimental composer John Cage. Link below to EV's karaoke version of it. Smith starts out by accidentally reading the wrong chapter, that's just extra blessings. This chapter of the BOM starts with an angel appearing to Nephi and showing him all sorts of visions. Who is the best Scrooge? Michael Cain? George C. Scott? Bill Murray? Joe goes in-depth to explain the condensation of God. Smith channels his inner 12-year-old for a pretty jizzy interpretation of the vision of the tree of life. A dog at Smith's house says hello from a different room. Smith tells us a mission story about having to use his Priesthood authority to cast out EFY music. He shares his opinion on the LDS practice of having youth participate in a trek (pioneer LARP-ing). Smith gets so worked up talking about the trek that he needed to end the episode in anger, which is something experts advise against. The 2022 youth theme for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has great meaning during this year, defined by culture wars and the continued COVID-19 pandemic: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6). This episode of the Church News podcast features the Church's Young Men general presidency — President Steven J. Lund and his counselors, Brother Ahmad S. Corbitt and Brother Bradley R. Wilcox — discussing the strength and testimonies of Latter-day Saint youth. In this and other times of uncertainty, the voice of prophets can guide young people toward light, said President Lund. “It is our prayer, our constant prayer, that our youth will be able to see the power of the doctrines of the kingdom that are brought to us through the prophets, seers and revelators on the earth today.” The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Bruce gives a real life example of how to teach with scripture instead of getting angry with his child. 41:00 Bruce gets called to serve in the mission presidency in the same mission that he served in as a young man. 43:00 Experiences working in a mission presidency and with the missionaries. 52:10 How can we better help and prepare missionaries? We need to focus on conversion and not baptism. It can be discouraging for missionaries when they can't achieve their baptism goal. You can't set a goal that infringes on other people's agency. Control the controllable. 55:15 How can parents best support their full time missionaries? Don't focus on outward rewards, such as, being an AP, zone leader, district leader or getting a certain number of baptisms. Instead ask them to share experiences and how they have seen God in their lives. Ask them not if they get along with their companion but what they have learned or like about their companion. Are you a victim to the culture of Mormonism? Have you experienced being shamed for who you were or what you were choosing because your loved ones chose the Mormon culture over you? Well you are not alone! My guest today is the amazing Jessie Funk. You may have heard about her, @dearauntjessie, from her singing and sharing her talent with EFY. Maybe you have seen her speak, or seen her work with the youth, her books that she's published or more recently her events and retreats that she is facilitating. Jessie is a power house and I was thrilled to have her on the show today!Jessie shares that for years she clung onto the phrase, "a testimony is found by the bearing of it". She felt that if she did all the little things, held onto faith, tried to do her very best to be as sincere as possible, as loving as possible, you name it that it would help her with her testimony in the Mormon church. But, it never worked. She shares that her transition out of Mormonism could be described as 'death by 1,000 paper cuts'. You can be happy and free. You can and will be blessed, even when you leave religion.See the magnificence of who you are. Today Mormon Stories is lucky enough to be joined by the wonderful Jessie Funk! For anyone familiar with the music of the youth seminars held by the LDS church known as “EFY”, singer Jessie Funk's name should ring a bell. After Jessie's career touring with the broadway musical “Footloose”, releasing several studio albums and books, starting her organization “The Ivy Foundation”, and raising her two children, she recently changed tunes, choosing to leave the Mormon church. We are excited to speak with Jessie about her Mormon upbringing, career (in and outside of the church), her faith crisis, and her new venture “Especially for Truth”, a week-long summer seminar for post-Mormon teens. Wrapping up her first “EFT” event last week where John and Carah were invited as guest speakers, we hope powerhouse Jessie Funk joining the post-Mormon activist space will be music to your ears! And a bonus? There are still tickets left to her Especially for Truth event for post-Mormon women in Park City this coming weekend Aug 27-29th! In this episode, I share a personal Aha Moment I recently had about Patriarchal Blessings. Key Ideas1. A Patriarchal Blessing is a revelation given through the Lord's authorized agent, the Patriarch. It is God's word directly given to us for our benefit and use, and as a guide throughout our life. When moved upon by the Holy Spirit, we may desire to share a particular part of our blessing with someone in our family or a close, personal friend. But our blessing should never be made common knowledge for all to hear. 2. We are meant to be agents who act, not agents to be acted upon. This concept led me to one of my greatest Aha Moments! Of the year so far. It was kind of “the perfect storm” for me, as far as Aha Moments go …. And when it struck, my first reaction was, “Well, duh! How did I miss THAT little golden nugget all these years … decades? Three things came together simultaneously:In my Book of Mormon study, I was reading 2nd Nephi, chapter 2. In our CFM study, I was reading D&C section 58. I had pulled out my Patriarchal Blessing and read it. I always believed my PB was God's way of telling what would happen TO ME during my life. One passage from my Blessing said my voice would become strong in bearing my testimony of the Restored gospel of Jesus Christ, the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon, and the power it has to make us better. I was talking to my daughter, Raechel, about this 18 months ago, lamenting that this blessing had not occurred yet. I translated that passage into something like: I would be asked to speak at Women's Conference, or be sought after to speak at Time Out For Women or EFY or Education Week. Those were the only venues I could think of where my voice could become strong in bearing my testimony to a large audience of people. That was when Raechel suggested I start a podcast. And although I took her advice, I overlooked a very important lesson! Until the morning of the perfect storm!3. Our Patriarchal Blessing IS an INVITATION from the Lord to ACT. The Spirit whispered to me, "Mindy, “It is not meet that I should command you in all things ….. you should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of your own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness; For the power is in you, wherein you are an agent unto yourself----Your Patriarchal Blessing IS THE CALL. But you need to ACT, not wait to be ACTED UPON.” This sudden realization filled me with an incredible, enabling power. Then another little golden nugget bopped me on the noggin: My voice IS becoming strong in bearing my testimony of the truthfulness of the Restored gospel! It's happening through this podcast! I am fulfilling one of the things I was called to do in my PB--because I chose to act of my own free will on one of the invitations. Perhaps you've known this all along. And if that's the case, I'm a little bummed that you didn't tell me about it sooner! DO ONE THINGGo through your PB and make a list of everything you are INVITED to do or become. Rewrite them as CALLINGS. Then design a plan.Resources"Your Patriarchal Blessing..." Thomas S. Monson"The Lord Blesses His Children..." Richard D. Allred"Priesthood Blessings..." James E. Faust

Years ago, while sitting alone in a hospital waiting room as his wife had an emergency C-section, Randal Wright made a commitment to God as he called upon the powers of heaven to help his wife safely deliver their newborn child. In that commitment, he promised that for the rest of his life he would look for important lessons. Not only would he look for those lessons, he would record them and share them. The Lord protected and preserved the lives of Randal's wife and child, and in return, Randal has kept his promise to God. On today’s episode, Randal reveals the power of sharing our experiences and learning from the experiences of others to inspire us to be better and live life to its fullest. “The first thing I say in the morning is ‘I’m alive.’" Show Notes 3:21- Why Teach in Stories? 10:04- 3-Word Journal 18:24- Using Stories in Teaching Effectively 29:49- Integrity=Doing What You’ll Say You Can Do 39:05- Early to Bed, Early to Rise 59:49- What Does It Mean to Be “All In” the Gospel of Jesus Christ? My friend Brayden McFadden (active LDS, EFY Counselor, BYU Student) shares his journey coming home from his mission in Alaska after 6 weeks because of his emotional health. Brayden pre-mission life including successfully doing hard things (Texas high school football, early morning seminary). But that firm foundation and spiritual preparation (including a year playing football at BYU) couldn’t prevent what happened on his mission from occurring and he needed to return home. Brayden talks about what happened, great family support, why church became difficult and why he almost left, why/how he stayed in the church, and how he ultimately healed. Brayden is sharing his story (including his EFY students) to help and support others. I became aware of Brayden’s story because of the IG account 2humansofbyu. In today's special episode of the Life is Brough Podcast, I interview Brother Darren Schmidt, one of my very dear friends and a former Seminary teacher of mine when I was in High School. Brother Schmidt teaches Seminary currently, and is also a father of eight children (nine including himself, his wife would say), as well as a leader in his Ward. He has spoken at BYU Education Week, and has been an EFY Director and has been involved in EFY for several years. He is an author of a small book that he wrote for his children that he later made the choice to publish called "Table Salt and Testimony." Above all of this, I am excited to have him on the podcast today because of who I know Brother Schmidt is because of the impact that he had on me when I was sitting in the same seats that his current students sit in as Seminary students. If you would like to get in touch with me, my email address is brough.podcast@gmail.com, I would love to hear from you about your experiences, or if you have feedback on the podcast please don't hesitate to send me a message.

He is a regular speaker at religious programs, corporate training events, school assemblies, and educational conferences. He is a master teacher and in this episode, he shares with us some of his secrets and tactics that we can all apply to improve our teaching. This interview was originally part of the Leading Saints Teaching Saints Virtual Summit. Read with enthusiasm and personality 47:45 There's an ideal, but be okay with the real Interview Transcript Leading Saints (LS): Welcome back to another session of the Teaching Saints Virtual Summit. This is one of the later recordings that we're doing, and it's been fun to see everything unfold, and people from around the world, thousands of individuals tuning in and hopefully gaining some insight on how to be better teachers in the church. Today I'm back on the campus of BYU, talking with Dr. Hank Smith. How are you? Hank Smith: Hello. Good to be with you, Kurt. LS: Now, tell the 10 people out there listening that have never heard of you, give them some background. Hank: Yes, the 10 out of the 11 who are listening. I've taught in [seminaries institutes? 00:00:52] for...it's been since 2000, so 18 years. I moved over to BYU in 2010, and I've taught here since then. [00:01:03] I work for Deseret Book a little bit, BYU Education Week, EFY, try to spread some goodness. LS: Nice, awesome. As I usually start out with, I want to imagine that we're in front of a room full of new gospel doctrine teachers, maybe seminary teachers, youth teachers, let's go through some points on improving teaching. But where do we start? What's a good jumping off point? Hank: I think for me, personally, I have to remember why we do what we do because it can get tiresome. And sometimes things don't go as well as planned, and you think, "Why do I even try," because it's not working. So you have to remember why. You come back to why. I have to go through my reasons why I do what I do, and in Genesis 44, Joseph is testing his brothers to see if they've changed. This is when he's in Egypt and they've come to Egypt for food, and he wants to see if they've changed, [00:02:03] and so he frames Benjamin. Most people have seen the play, haven't read the book, but most people know the play. LS: Which is a historically [acting]. Hank: Right, right. Yeah, totally. They sing the songs right here in the chapters. But in Genesis 44, he said he's going to take Benjamin and put him in prison, and he's going to let the brothers go. And he says, "You can go." He wants to see; will they leave their little brother behind? If they do,

That's a HUGE deal because what that means is your PURAVAI water is able to remain safe to drink, even decades later!!
