As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Kim and Kara finally get to talk with Kayla Hayes.  At just 25, Kayla Hayes is a passionate advocate, speaker, and author who embodies resilience. Having faced the challenges of childhood sexual abuse and teenage domestic violence, she made a powerful choice to transform her pain into purpose, embracing her scars as wings of strength. Kayla's story has resonated widely, earning features on Inside Edition, in Cosmopolitan Magazine, and on various national platforms dedicated to empowering survivors. Through podcasts, interviews, and impactful speaking engagements, she raises awareness about domestic violence and empowers others to reclaim their identities. A pivotal moment in Kayla's journey was the realization that her experiences did not define her; rather, they could be a source of strength. This insight drives her mission to inspire young people to heal from their pasts and see their scars as symbols of hope and resilience. She believes that by sharing our stories, we can create a supportive community that uplifts one another. Kayla's Call to Action: "Our scars, both physical and invisible, can become our wings, lifting us towards healing and empowerment. I just want to urge you to embrace your journey and wear your scars proudly, knowing they are symbols of resilience. If you or someone you know is struggling with the effects of abuse, I urge you to seek support and share your story because I believe that truly together we can create a community of healing and strength and to show the world that our past does not define us. Instead, we can propel us into a brighter, more powerful future." Learn more from Kayla: To discover more about Kayla's advocacy or to book a speaking engagement, visit sheriseswithkaylahayes.com. Pack your suitcase for a trauma trip! Kim and Kara chart new territory reflecting on alcohol consumption, Kim's Irish goodbyes at concerts, Kara's real-time unpacking of the challenges of parenting, and the compounded mental burdens that come with these responsibilities as survivors. They also discuss the concept of code-switching and its impact on identity. Kim asks listeners for a very specific birthday gift this year: urge Congress to pass the Crime Victims Fund Stabilization Act. Call to Action: Urge Congress to Pass the Crime Victims Fund Stabilization Act (H.R.8061/S.4514) urging the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives to authorize much-needed 2024 bridge funding for the federal Crime Victims Fund (VOCA Fund). The VOCA Fund supports the provision of essential direct services for crime victims and survivors across the country. According to the U.S. Department of Justice's Office for Victims of Crime, projected fiscal year 2024 funding for victim service grants will be $700 million lower than fiscal year 2023. The VOCA Fund was established by the Victims of Crime Act of 1984, and it is the primary financial source for victim services in all 50 states, five U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia. VOCA Fund revenue is generated from offenders convicted of crimes, not from taxes. In 2021, Congress passed the VOCA Fix Act, which allows monetary recoveries from federal deferred prosecutions and non-prosecution agreements to replenish the fund. While passage of the VOCA Fix Act was necessary, it was not sufficient to adequately shore up fund balances, and 2024 VOCA funding for crime victim service programs is anticipated to be 41% lower nationwide when compared to 2023 grant awards. Without prompt action by Congress, many victim service programs across the country may be forced to close. The VOCA Fund supports medical care, mental health counseling, lost wages, courtroom advocacy, and temporary housing for victims and survivors of crime. It also helps to fund federal, state, and tribal victim service programs, crime victim compensation, discretionary grant awards, victim specialists in U.S. Attorney's Offices and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the federal victim notification system. Kim and Kara talk about ambiguous grief with Heather Straughter and the ways grief and trauma are so intimately cooccurring.  Heather Straughter (said like “daughter”), was a Special Education Inclusion teacher in Roxbury, Massachusetts for nearly 10 years before moving to Saratoga Springs, NY with her husband Brian and growing family. Her first child Ethan was born in 2005 and her second Jake was born in 2006. Both boys were healthy and vibrant; then, when Jake was eight months old, he had a seizure that changed the families lives forever.  They spent 117 days in the hospital before going home. At that point Jake had lost all his milestones. They continued to advocate for their son and made sure that he got the care he needed to thrive – despite the fact that doctors were never able to diagnose him. When Jake was 4-years-old he suddenly passed away. In the chaos of that grief the non-profit “Jake's Help from Heaven” was born.  In the 13 years since his death the small non-profit has awarded $1.7 Million dollars to 1,000 medically fragile individuals – mostly children – who live within a 100 mile radius of Saratoga Springs, NY. Many of them come back year after year, with new needs as they age.  Heather's story is one of resilience and determination in the face of unimaginable loss.  Heather's CTA: Listen to "A Place of Yes" Learn more from Heather: @Jakeshelp Jake's Help From Heaven _________ Join Kim and Kara's "Captive Audience" by visiting   https://www.patreon.com/SGTC.     Like what we're doing here? Diving straight into the deep pool of dark humor, Kara prepares to launch new merch following a series of unhinged texts from Kim, kicked off by this early 2000's Nike ad. Consent conversations with their children highlight the importance of having open and age-appropriate conversations with kids about subjects like sexuality, pornography, and menstruation. Helpful videos from Planned Parenthood are referenced. They emphasize the need for ongoing communication and being a reliable source of information for their children, because as Kim says, "if they aren't hearing it from you, they're going to hear it from somewhere".  Both ladies touch on the importance of consent and the challenges of discussing their own experiences of sexual assault with their kids.  _________ Join Kim and Kara's "Captive Audience" by visiting   https://www.patreon.com/SGTC.     Like what we're doing here? Much to Kim's chagrin, it is NOT a velociraptor.  Today's guest is forensic nurse Shaun Johnson. In an SGTC first, you all had the opportunity to submit questions ahead of our conversation. Listen as Shaun answers these and more.  Shaun Johnson is a dedicated registered nurse passionate about providing compassionate and patient-centered care to survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, human tracking, and stalking. Shaun has been a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) since 2018.  Since becoming a SANE, Shaun has made significant contributions to the field of sexual assault care and advocacy in Maine. His role extends beyond conducting forensic examinations; he also plays a crucial part in educating his community and other healthcare professionals about sexual assault, domestic violence, human trafficking, and stalking prevention and the importance of a trauma-informed approach to care and services provided to survivors. Shaun's career as a SANE began in Portland, Maine, where he worked as a registered nurse before specializing in forensic nursing. He developed exceptional clinical skills in assessing and treating victims of sexual assault while training colleagues, throughout the hospital, about the role and the services SANEs provide.  In late 2021, Shaun started The SANE Corner Instagram page to create a community and bring awareness and education to social media about forensic nursing.  His passion for providing specialized care to vulnerable populations led him to pursue an advanced degree, and is currently procuring a Master's in Public Health. In addition, Shaun has a passion for breaking the stereotype that men can be SANEs and that more are needed in this field. Nachos are Kara's favorite food, and you'll all be asking "is the cheese throughout?" the next time you order them. Early interwebs videos, college jobs, and hoping Terry Crews will grace the podcast with an interview someday start this chapter off on an eclectic note before introducing today's guest.  Avremi Zippel joins Kim and Kara for a conversation you'll probably want to listen to a few times to digest all of the wisdom this survivor imparts. His journey through reclaiming his voice, healing his inner child, and forging a new path toward justice for survivors like him provides a unique message that is compassionately delivered.  Rabbi Avremi Zippel was born in Toronto, Canada and moved to Salt Lake City with his parents, in July of 1992. He attended a Jewish High School in Chicago, and attended Rabbinical College in London, England. Rabbi Zippel participated in Jewish outreach and humanitarian missions, in Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Wales, and numerous cities throughout the U.S. He was ordained at the Rabbinical College of America in Morristown, NJ by the Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi I.M. Lau, in December of 2013. He married Sheina in January of 2014, and together they moved to Utah later that year, when they created Young Jewish Professionals Utah. They are the proud parents of two adorable little boys.  In February of 2019, Rabbi Zippel publicly came forward about the decade of sexual abuse he had endured at the hands of a childhood caretaker. He is believed to be the first Orthodox Rabbi to publicly speak out about sexual abuse in his past. Since then, Rabbi Zippel has taken a leadership role in combating sexual abuse in religious communities around the world and advocating for survivors. Rabbi Zippel serves his community as the Crime Victim Representative on the Utah Council for Victims of Crime, and was recognized as the Child Advocate of the Year in 2021 by Prevent Child Abuse Utah. His story has been shared in numerous formats, most recently in Aly Raisman: Darkness to Light, a made-for-TV special that aired on Lifetime. He is a sought-after lecturer and mentor to communities around the world. Listen as Jess discloses information about the names you know, the stories you don't, and makes details about the network of conspirators public, for the very first time.  Buckle up, friends--this chapter is sure to leave you speechless.    Jess Michaels is a dance industry professional with 30 years experience as a performer, educator and entrepreneur. She is also a 1991 survivor of sexual assault by Jeffrey Epstein and childhood sexual abuse who was silently tortured for decades by the repressed, unprocessed trauma that destroyed her emotional, physical, and intellectual health.  Shockingly, her healing journey began December 14, 2012, after Jess and her hometown of Newtown CT were devastated by the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.  In 2015, Jess joined Ian Hockley, founder of Dylan's Wings of Change, a foundation dedicated to his son, Dylan Hockley, one of the first-grade victims in the shooting, and worked to help develop the Wingman program - inspiring empathy, courage, and inclusion in children through experiential education - for dance studios, sports, and schools. It was there in Newtown, teaching dance classes and working alongside brave parents who lost their children, Jess began to connect the value of shame-free, community-based early trauma intervention to the needs of sexual assault survivors. Jaycee is the founder of the JAYC Foundation. She started the foundation to help other families that have suffered a familial or non-familial abduction or other trauma and has created educational programs and encourages the collaboration of various entities to provide “Protected Spaces” for families to heal.  Jaycee is also the author of “A Stolen Life” and “Freedom: My Book of Firsts”, both memoirs that she wrote herself detailing her eighteen years in captivity, eventual rescue, and recovery process. She has spoken at many venues across the country and hopes to continue writing. An important goal of hers is to educate the media and the helping professions that the term “Stockholm Syndrome” was a media-driven term and is degrading and insensitive to survivors and their families.  Jaycee enjoys spending time with her family and her faithful four-legged companions in California. Recently she has started the Polyvagal Equine Institute with longtime friends Dr Rebecca Bailey and equine expert Margie McDonald. They are excited to share educational programs, videos and workshops that focus on incorporating horses with polyvagal theory.   Rebecca Bailey, Ph.D. is a leading family psychologist and equestrian who has become a world-renowned professional teacher, speaker, author, and entrepreneur. She is the founder of Transitioning Families, a group of independently licensed mental health practitioners dedicated to Bailey's innovative ideas for helping families through crisis and difficult change. She is best known for her work with survivors of non-familial abduction and is on the advisory board of the JAYC foundation. Together with Jaycee they have created an innovative model which utilizes horses to help teach and educate judges, police officers, therapists and other professionals about compassion, kindness, and connection.  She is the creator of the Polyvagal Equine Institute and Connection Focused Therapy an organization dedicated to Equine-assisted psychotherapy and education with a focus on applying Dr. Stephen Porges research on the autonomic nervous system to a variety of populations. She believes that understanding the interaction between the nervous system and our thoughts and actions is key to compassionately responding to and addressing the complexities of today's societal demands. She has appeared on numerous Network shows including Andersen Cooper and ABC's 20/20.  A graduate of The Wright Institute in Berkley, CA, Dr. Bailey was raised in the Boston area but relocated to California 35 years ago. S1 Ep3: Chapter 3 | Where There's Hope with Elizabeth Smart

Kim and Kara talk with Elizabeth Smart about being the person at the center of one of the most famous child abduction cases, connecting with fellow survivors, motherhood, and how taking control of her narrative has changed over the past 20 years.  The kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart was one of the most followed child abduction cases of our time. Elizabeth was abducted on June 5, 2002, and her captors controlled her by threatening to kill her and her family if she tried to escape. Fortunately, the police safely returned Elizabeth back to her family on March 12, 2003, after being held a prisoner for 9 grueling months. Through this traumatic experience, Elizabeth has become an advocate for change related to child abduction, recovery programs, and National legislation. Elizabeth triumphantly testified before her captor and the world about the very private nightmare she suffered during her abduction, which led to conviction. The Founder of the “Elizabeth Smart Foundation”, Elizabeth has also helped promote The National AMBER Alert, The Adam Walsh Child Protection & Safety Act and other safety legislation to help prevent abductions. Smart attended Brigham Young University, studying music as a harp performance major. She married her husband Matthew in 2012, and they now have three beautiful children. Elizabeth's example is a daily demonstration that there really is life after tragedy.
