Welcome back to the New Mom Boss Podcast! My guest, Markella Kaplani, has seen many moms suffer from an identity crisis in motherhood, coupled with the guilt and shame that tend to tag along. In our discussion, we talk about her personal story of a difficult postpartum, the problem of viewing motherhood as a role, matrescence and the motherly instinct, and the conflicting tension between being a successful mother and being a successful woman in today's society. Markella is a psychotherapist and a special educator focused on helping expecting and new mothers by addressing this potential identity crisis with confidence, making sure they feel validated and empowered. Some big takeaways are: Motherhood is something we grow into. Our brains actually change as new moms, forcing us to refocus on new priorities. Not everything about motherhood is instinctual - some of it has to be learned. Markella Kavenagh already had a handful of experience and credits to her name before jumping into The Rings of Power, but Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings series is about to send her star soaring in a very big way.The show takes place before the events of Peter Jackson's Hobbit and Lord of the Rings film trilogies, during the Second Age. While there is some that view it as a time of peace initially, Galadriel, played here by Morfydd Clark, senses evil brewing. While she sets off to face it head-on, Kavenagh's Nori is living the nomadic lifestyle of a Harfoot. Even though Nori is very dedicated to her family, friends, and the community overall, she feels pulled towards bigger things, and that pull becomes especially strong when she encounters a mysterious stranger played by David Weyman. With the first two episodes of The Rings of Power now available on Prime Video, it's time to get to know Kavenagh a bit better. During our Collider Ladies Night Pre-Party interview we retraced her steps from first recognizing her eagerness to become an actor to scoring a role in one of the biggest franchises in pop culture history. Markella, a writer, producer, director and mom of two active boys, went in for a routine surgery in 2011 at the age of 28 and woke up with a permanent injury that would force her to re-learn how to “do life” and change her approach to the everyday. She opens up about using her anger and tough love to shift her mindset, the importance of playing her own cards and how living in survivor mode your entire life makes it hard to know what it's like to live. Four years ago, she finally found her voice when she met her incredibly supportive partner Eddie, and, in 2019, wrote, directed, produced and starred in It's Just Like Riding a Bike, the story of her adventure racing in the grueling BC Bike Race, a seven-day mountain bike stage race, on only two weeks of training.Contact Us: Email: amgits.reverse@gmail.comInstagram: @brushcreekthriversFacebook: From Survivor to Thriver

If you've worked in the yoga industry for a while, you may have had the feeling that something “wasn't quite right”. We've had many conversations on this podcast about issues inside of the industry, and how yoga businesses are set up. Being a former studio owner myself, I don't believe it's (usually) the fault of malicious intent on the part of studio owners, but rather a reflection of the basic structure of the studio model. That's why I was so excited to speak with today's guests, Avita Bansee & Markella Los about The Connective, a teacher-owner, worker-co-op, online studio. The team at The Connective are actively creating an alternative where the teachers are also owners, who have come together on the basis of shared values to build an online studio that supports the whole, just as much as it supports the individual. In November 2019, Yoga Teachers at YogaWorks in New York city came together to create the world’s first ( that we know of ) Union For Yoga Teachers. From The Yoga Works Union:“We are Yoga and Mindful Fitness Educators. We’ve come together to have a voice in our industry, raise industry standards, and create a more equitable and sustainable profession for all. Our goal is for employees, students and businesses to thrive”I was lucky enough to interview Markella Los, one of the union organizers for today’s podcast. Markella is a yoga teacher, movement educator and one of the organisers of the worlds first union for yoga teachers teachers. I’ve been following Markella on instagram for a few years, because we share a similar philosophy about movement. We’ve had similar experiences with a long period of “yoga only” movement, and suffered pain and injuries as a result. After which learning from humans outside the yoga system, and upgrading our knowledge of how to keep the body healthy and resilient through movement. But then… last year, I noticed that Markella was part of a group of teachers at YogaWorks studios in new york who were organising a union. Markella was one of the first people I reached out to, to be on the new show - and due to the fact that the union was literally forming when I asked her to come on - we had to postpone recording until a few weeks ago.We talk about:Why Markella & the Yoga Works teachers began to pursue creating a unionPay barriers to becoming a yoga teacherPay transparencyWhy the burden of getting a pay rise shouldn’t fall on the individual An update on where the YogaWorks union is now (after the YES vote in November)How a union works - collective bargaining, creating a contractWhat types of things the union is able to ask forHow much time takes to organise a unionThinking globally and acting locallyBottom up organising in your communityCriticism & union busting tacticsOrganizing for independent contractors ( vs. employees ) Misclassification of yoga teachers as independent contractorsThe personal investment and growth of organisingThe first thing to do if you’re thinking about starting a unionThe main criticisms / challenges of yoga union organisingUnion busting tacticsHow the financial backing of a union worksHow a yoga union can help foster diversity and access in yogaFIND MARKELLAMarkella’s InstagramMarkella’s WebsiteFIND CORACora's InstagramCora's WebsiteTeachers Club WaitlistFor full show notes & links to resources mentioned in this show head to www.corageroux.com/podcastepisodes/episode13

You can connect with her at jodieruftyyoga.com.Markella Los started practicing yoga in 2008. After years of faster-paced sports and martial arts, she thought she would find yoga slow and boring. Obviously, she was wrong. In 2015, she completed her first teacher training through YogaWorks under the mentorship of Chrissy Carter and has been teaching full time since. After almost ten years practicing yoga, and only yoga, she developed pain in her hips. More yoga and passive stretching didn't help. Instead, she had to completely rethink her practice, and therefore her teaching, to give her body more strength and stability. This led Markella on a path of discovery, advanced education in anatomy, kinesiology, and biomechanics, and further training. Now she helps people move and feel better while doing the practice they love and in their daily lives. Her teaching style is grounded, light-hearted, and rooted in resilience and exploration.
