Episode #503: Navigating Fitness Trends-Jeff Miller on RowHouse and Industry Insights

HALO Talks

IIn today's episode, host Pete Moore sits down with Jeff Miller, the Chief Marketing Officer of RowHouse, a leading brand under the Xponential umbrella. Jeff's career is a journey through several industries and roles, reflecting his adaptability and passion for marketing and technology. He began in the education sector, creating websites for tech products before transitioning to the burgeoning world of e-commerce during the early days of the internet. His first significant marketing role was in the surf industry with Body Glove, where he helped launch their first direct-to-consumer website and pioneered their digital marketing efforts. He delves deep into the unique positioning of RowHouse, discussing how the brand aims to demystify rowing and make it appealing to a broader audience, including non-rowers. Jeff also touches on the importance of pre-sales, the evolving focus on strength training, community building, and marketing strategies to maximize the boutique fitness experience. Listen now to learn more about fitness marketing, the impact of cultural trends, and innovative ways to keep members engaged and motivated. On the revival around rowing, Jeff states, "There's definitely a renewed interest in rowing. We're looking at some of those Olympic athletes and some of these NIL deals with college rowing to cement that. That's still a pretty small niche, but it's a way to get in front and show that . . . there's these people who are in amazing shape, who live these healthy lives, and where rowing is a part of their core concept." Key themes discussed Navigated careers from education to digital marketing. Enhancing brand membership through effective marketing strategies. Comparison of instructor influence in fitness studios. Renewed interest in rowing across all populations. Efficient workout for Ozempic users: consider rowing. Developing fitness program and integrating pretax payments. Can SilverSneakers and Medicare fund boutique fitness? A few key takeaways: 1. Jeff's diverse career path led him from education, through the surf industry with Body Glove, to a significant role at YogaWorks where he discovered his passion for marketing in the fitness industry. This background has equipped him with extensive experience in both digital and traditional marketing strategies. 2. RowHouse is approaching its 10-year anniversary and aims to position itself as the go-to option for a full-body, low-impact workout. Despite the niche nature of rowing in boutique fitness, RowHouse plans to capitalize on the comprehensive benefits of rowing, including strength, cardio, and flexibility, to attract a broader audience beyond hardcore rowers. 3. The company emphasizes its community. However, RowHouse goes a step further by promoting a "crew" mentality to distinguish itself from other boutique brands. This sense of unity and collective effort is a core element in their classes, adding value beyond the physical workout. 4. Drawing from his experience at Orange Theory Fitness, Miller highlights the importance of strong presales and opening strategies to build a robust membership base from the get-go. This involves well-thought-out marketing tactics and a competitive spirit to set high benchmarks for membership growth and studio performance. 5. RowHouse is considering the growing trends in the fitness industry, such as the focus on strength training and the potential implications of new health and wellness trends like GLP-1 weight loss drugs. The brand is also exploring new ways to optimize studio time and introduce classes that cater to different demographics, ensuring maximum utilization and appeal. It helps make it stand out and will support booking of upcoming guests.'Episode NotesKnown in the yoga world as THE teachers' teacher, Annie Carpenter (@anniecarpentersmartflow) shares her story with Anne, who has been an avid student, first via online platform Glo.com, before attending live Zoom classes and IRL workshops with her in 2022. Annie's journey starts in Virginia, but she tells Anne how she found her path early on with dance, leading her to the Martha Graham company and New York City. From getting a scholarship to working at the junior company and briefly joining the main company, Annie found a calling in what she refers to as authentic self-movement and in teaching at the Martha Graham Center. An introvert, she shares with Anne how yoga became an essential part of her life, thanks to Integral yoga (Swami Satchidananda's school) which felt like a refuge from the competitiveness of the dance world.Annie explains how after a trip to LA and a conversation with her teacher Maty Ezraty, she impulsively relocated to the West Coast and turned to teaching yoga full time, training at Yoga Works under Maty and Lisa Walford. They go on to talk about teaching, about Annie's movement principles and energy, how to create inspiration for students, and why Annie founded her own yoga school, Smart Flow Yoga. Annie also shares why continuing to evolve is essential, as well as learning to let go of preconceived notions. She explains how she has learnt to tap into her students' expectations rather than relying on her own. Now based in Northern California, the teacher, who turned 65 this year, also talks about the stages of life, or ashrams, and she is learning to ‘retire' whatever is not supportive in her practice. Quoting Noam Chomsky, she says: "If you are teaching today what you were teaching five years ago, either your field is dead, or you are.” Annie also reveals  her passion for bird-watching, her mindfulness and pranayama practices, and how learning to be still was the doorway to her meditation practice. Finally, she answers the most delicate and profound question of all, one that Annie regularly asks her students: who is Annie? A joyous, profoundly thoughtful and inspiring interview. Enjoy!TakeawaysAnnie Carpenter's journey from dance to yoga and the influence of Martha Graham on her practiceThe importance of finding one's truth and balance in yoga practiceAnnie's development of Smart Flow Yoga and the principles behind itAnnie's role as a teacher's teacher and her experience teaching on Glow Glow Yoga offers a variety of teachers and practices that are both entertaining and beneficial.Teaching yoga via Zoom has its challenges, but it also allows for a more global community.Traveling for yoga teacher trainings can be both rewarding and guilt-inducing due to carbon emissions.Tapping into energy and using inquiry are important aspects of teaching yoga.Somatic movement and meditation can enhance the yoga practice and bring about self-discovery.Yoga philosophy, such as the Yuga Sutras, offers insights into time, space, and the human experience. There is a need for more accessible yoga classes that cater to beginners and focus on functional movement.Birdwatching is a passion of Anne's that connects her with nature and brings her joy. Birdwatching can be a meditative and calming hobby that allows for a deeper connection with nature.Daily rituals and practices, such as breathing exercises and yoga, can support well-being and balance.Continuous learning and evolution are essential in teaching and personal growth.Exploring the question of 'Who am I?' can lead to a deeper understanding of oneself and a sense of constancy.Connection, empathy, and self-discovery are key to finding happiness.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Annie Carpenter03:01 Annie's Journey from Dance to Yoga11:19 Annie's Early Yoga Experiences and Integral Yoga22:38 Creating Her Own School and Curriculum27:07 Movement Principles in Smart Flow Yoga31:45 Annie Carpenter: A Teacher's Teacher34:36 Teaching on Glow and the Future36:02 The Exciting and Beneficial World of Glow Yoga37:28 Teaching Yoga via Zoom: Challenges and Opportunities38:55 The Dilemma of Travel and Carbon Emissions42:17 Tapping into Energy and the Power of Inquiry in Teaching44:43 Exploring Somatic Movement and Meditation in Yoga57:31 Insights from Yoga Philosophy: The Yuga Sutras01:09:10 The Need for Accessible Yoga Classes01:12:04 Finding Joy in Birdwatching01:13:29 Birding: A Meditative and Calming Practice01:20:22 Daily Rituals for Well-being and Balance01:25:22 Continuous Learning and Evolution in Teaching01:32:40 Exploring the Question of 'Who am I?'01:43:29 The Significance of Connection, Empathy, and Self-Discovery in Happiness***Selected links from episodeYou can find Annie at https://www.smartflowyoga.com/about-annie-carpenter/on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/anniecarpentersmartflow/and on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/annie.carpenter1And all details for her upcoming class schedule and teacher trainings are available here  - https://www.smartflowyoga.com/or find Annie's classes on Glo - https://www.glo.com/Selected links from episodeMartha Graham on Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martha_GrahamAnd https://marthagraham.org/The classic piece Appalachian Spring - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nM5-CsI713gIntegral Yoga - https://integralyoga.org/Savasana pose - https://www.yogapedia.com/definition/6582/savasanaAli McGraw Yoga, Mind & Body - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmW5Og4VBg8Eric Schiffman - https://erichschiffmann.com/Sally Kempton - https://www.sallykempton.com/Swami Satchidananda - https://integralyoga.org/founder/Maty Ezrati - https://matyezraty.com/Kia Miller - https://www.kiamiller.com/Triyoga London - https://triyoga.co.uk/Diana Rilov - https://www.dianarilov.com/Feldenkreis - https://feldenkrais.com/Alexander Technique - https://alexandertechnique.com/Bonnie Bainbridgecohen - https://bonniebainbridgecohen.com/The Glo Podcast - https://podcast.glo.com/The yoga sutras of Patanjali - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoga_Sutras_of_PatanjaliSiddhis - https://www.thecontemplativelife.org/blog/yoga-sutras-patanjali-siddhis-mystic-powersThe prothonotary warbler - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prothonotary_warblerSlow birding, the book by Joan E. In this episode of The Dad Edge podcast, entrepreneur and CEO Logan Mulvey joins host Larry Hagner for an insightful discussion on work-life balance and being present with loved ones. As a successful serial entrepreneur and proven operator, Logan understands the pressures of building a career. However, through his experiences as a father raising three young sons–Declan, McCoy, and Fletcher, he has learned the importance of disconnecting from work and being fully immersed in family life. Logan shares stories about his sons' unique personalities - the overachieving first-born, the confident and cool middle child, and the little guy with a big heart. He highlights simple but meaningful ways he makes time for his family, like spending ordinary moments together, being available for breakfast prep, and truly watching his kids play. This transparent conversation resonates with all listeners, not just entrepreneurs and parents. It emphasizes being emotionally and physically present with loved ones instead of just going through the motions. Logan challenges people to put down distractions and have sincere interactions - a reminder that quality time requires full engagement. With insightful anecdotes and thoughtful perspectives, Logan Mulvey provides listeners with motivation and realistic tactics for achieving work-life integration. Welcome to this conversation on the energetics and consciousness of yoga! What's the subtle body got to do with it?? I'm so excited to share this conversation with my dear friend Edward Sczudlo. A deep practitioner of yoga and Tibetan buddhism for over 20 years, Edward has completely transformed the way I see yoga by introducing me to the subtle body and the energetic dimensions of the practice. Before I started practicing yoga with Edward, I had no idea why I was doing the twists, backbends, and other yogic postures I had been practicing for so many years! Edward is so kind-hearted and generous with his transmission and I'm honored to have him on my podcast.  In this episode, we cover: The role of the subtle body in yoga  The innate clarity of the mind, and how to access it Using an awareness of past and future lives to focus our practice  What it means to be a spiritual warrior  Trusting the wisdom of the heart  Reality as a projection    If you want to work with Edward one-on-one, you can get in touch with him here:  https://www.instagram.com/clear_light_mind/?hl=en   You can also learn more about his nonprofit, the Maitri project, here: https://themaitriproject.com/

Sarah began teaching Yoga in the mid-'80s. Today, her yoga style blends a Yin sequence of long-held floor poses to enhance the meridian and organ systems. She often engages in inquiry practice, with an alignment-based slow flow, or yang movement practice.  Sarah has completed all levels of the Internal Family Systems Therapy training and has been a student of spiritual psychology for over 35 years. She also draws from her in-depth training and long retreats in the Vipashyana, Tantric and Dzogchen practices of Buddhism. Sarah and Ty Powers created the Insight Yoga Institute (IYI) in 2010. Having both interwoven Yoga, Buddhism and Psychological approaches for three decades in their retreats and trainings, they decided to create a more formal umbrella to draw people together in a like-minded community. Of particular interest to Sarah and Ty is that participants learn how to commit to an integrated daily home practice for the body, heart and mind through yogic, Buddhist and psychological teachings and methods. IYI retreats bring together the dynamic and receptive aspects of yoga, the three schools of Buddhism (Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana) and the skilful methods of psycho-dynamic personal and relational work and are held in social silence. The teachers on retreat are not silent but will be leading classes and seeing people individually.  The program can be enjoyed as independent retreats or as a path to Yoga Alliance 500+ hour certification. Remember being told you should start dieting if you could “pinch an inch” around your midsection? (Thanks Special K cereal ads…) Growing up, our bellies were often made a point of shame as they were poked, pinched, and otherwise derided. For many, that shame gets deeper in the menopause transition. That urge to suck it in and suck it up when our body image suffers has damaged more than our psyches (though that's bad enough!). It's damaged our relationship with our bodies–and even our breath, which is not only the very essence of life, but also one of our greatest tools for relaxation and recovery, and for helping manage the challenges of menopause. This week, we sit down with Jill Miller, author of Body by Breath and go deep into the power of breath, the emotional and physical (hello, tight muscles) factors that can constrict our breathing, and, of course, how we can fully access our breath to optimize our health and performance. Known in the yoga world as THE teachers' teacher, Annie Carpenter (@anniecarpentersmartflow) shares her story with Anne, who has been an avid student, first via online platform Glo.com, before attending live Zoom classes and IRL workshops with her in 2022. Welcome to Episode #62 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! My conversation with Jannice Strand, a yoga teacher from Norway, was so delightful as we talked about psychology as yoga philosophy and realizing that yoga is what we need to heal and process and gain an understanding of ourselves as we truly are. I hope that this conversation made you want to show up for yourself as yourself in the deepest way possible. If you're looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about the big warnings that yoga should come with, then this is the conversation for you. Jannice Strand has assisted in more than 600 hours of YogaWorks Teacher Training and has completed tons of additional training. Moreover, Jannice has also studied the chakra, bandhas, and mudras with Dr. Kausthub Decikashar, who is TKV Desikachars son. And she has completed in-depth study with BKS Iyengar Oslo Iyengar. She has also studied Tibetan Buddishm with Dolpo Tulki Rainpoche with the Karma Tashi Ling Buddhist Society. What to expect in the Yoga In Norway episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast Jannice used to have a “hardcore life,” as she says. She was struggling to find joy, her body was tired, and she was partying all the time. One day, she walked by a small yoga studio ran by Tibetan monks in Oslo. She felt the urge to go and one day she walked through the doors, and began doing courses and training there. After that studio closed, she sought out another yoga studio in Oslo and ended up at an Ashtanga Yoga studio, and then came to YogaWorks. After a really difficult time in her life, and doctors prescribed antidepressants and then more and more pills, Jannice said enough was enough. She went to a psychiatrist and realized that what the psychiatrist was telling her was really yoga philosophy. What she really needed was yoga. Yoga should come with a big warning. You have to see yourself. You have to face yourself. Our guest today is Raghunath who has so much wisdom to share. He is a long-time yogi, spiritual teacher, musician, podcaster, and co-founder of Supersoul School and Farm. A teen in search of meaning, Ray Cappo fled his suburban Connecticut enclave for New York City — and found community among the misfits of Manhattan's Lower East Side. He fell in love with punk rock, so he started a band, Youth of Today, and a record label. Success soon followed. By the late 1980's, his bandhad thousands of fans, cementing Ray as a leading voice and trendsetter at the bullseye of hardcore culture. At the age of 22, he experienced a spiritual awakening and traveled to India to become a monk. After 6 and a half years, he began another successful band. 20 years ago, Nathalie and Raghunath met while they both worked at YogaWorks in Los Angeles. He never planned to become a teacher, but was always fascinated by spiritual openness. After moving to L.A., he realized he didn't want to be a musician anymore, but yoga was a passion of his. He was asked to sub as a teacher, and his teaching journey began from there. After all this time, what does yoga mean for Raghunath? In the past, he was always interested in alternative lifestyles and clean living, but he never approached yoga as a specific way to “fix” one thing. It was always a search for spirituality. Now, yoga isn't the whole meal, rather it is the condiment for larger feasts of the soul. We are spiritual beings that have a soul. The goal of yoga is knowledge of the Self. Who are you underneath your ego self? Underneath all the trappings of the false self, who is the true you? The body is a gift, but it is not all we are. All aspects of yourself need to be nurtured. Episode Summary  I'm joined by Echo Raphael, a Thyroid Strong and Stay Strong member, to discuss her journey with Hashimoto's and the enormous shift that she's experienced in her life after reincorporating weightlifting into her routine.  Key Takeaways  Before she started experiencing symptoms of Hashimoto's, Echo led a very active, healthy life. Once the pain and brain fog started to slow her down, she worked with a functional nutritionist to find solutions that worked for her. She saw one of my Thyroid Strong posts on Instagram and wanted to jump back into lifting heavy weights. Even though she was skeptical, she left every workout feeling more energized and happier. Weight training has also made everyday life and chores easier, and it boosted her Covid recovery.  Echo Raphael  Echo Raphael is a Certified Holistic Health Coach and Hormone Specialist by the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. In 2019 she was also certified in 200 Hour Yoga Instruction with YogaWorks. Her approach addresses root cause issues for long term healing and knows there is no "one size fits all" to health. Echo's Hashimoto's Journey & Life Before Thyroid Strong Echo thought that she was just hitting it too hard at the gym when she started to experience back and neck pain. When her chronic fatigue started to escalate, her doctors told her that she was overworking herself and needed to rest, but Echo felt like there was something else going on. When she got her lab results back, her TPO antibodies were through the roof and she was diagnosed with Hashimoto's. Once she got on the proper dose of medication and implemented certain diet and lifestyle changes, she felt ready to try out Thyroid Strong.  Getting Back in the Gym with Thyroid Strong  Pre-Hashi's, Echo liked to use the Sweat app and was a fan of lifting heavy weights. She likes that Thyroid Strong offers something for everyone, including people who are brand new to weightlifting. The 20-30 minute workouts are effective and leave her sore in all the right ways. Other aspects of her life, like unloading heavy grocery bags or going for longer walks, have become easier as a result of training with Thyroid Strong.  In This Episode  Echo details how she discovered she had Hashimoto's [ 1:44 ] Emily asks Echo how she found out about Thyroid Strong. [ 10:27 ] Echo talks about what she likes and what she would do differently with Thyroid Strong. [ 12:13 ] Emily and Echo talk about getting back into exercise after having Covid. [ 17:51 ] Echo talks about her program, The Butterfly Effect. [ 22:22 ] Echo shares her message for anyone who is hesitant of signing up for Thyroid Strong. [ 25:26 ] Quotes If I could do anything to get back into the gym and lift weights without feeling fatigued, I would do it. [11:38] Every single time I worked out, I felt worse. But with this program, I would leave a workout with more energy, I'd feel better, and I'd feel happier. [12:44]  I think with Hashimoto's, we kind of have to unlearn some things that we've learned before. [16:05] DISCLAIMER THIS PODCAST/WEBSITE/COACHING SERVICE DOES NOT PROVIDE MEDICAL ADVICE. The Downward Facing Spiritual Spiral

This week on the Spiritual Spiral, I am SUPER excited to welcome my friend, astrologer and author, David Bensimon to the show. I met David close to ten years ago at the infamous Yoga Works on Main Street. Since that time, David has gone on to become an astrologer as well as an author writing the children's book, The Little Crab Finds a Friend. If you're curious about astrology and the meaning behind a "natal chart", then I think you're going to LOVE today's chat with David. We talk about a myriad of important issues and we begin by reminiscing about the yoga world from 2020. We discuss tech, social media, creativity and since David has recently started reading my book, he shares some perspective about social media and the yoga world. David and I then dive in and discuss astrology, looking at one's "natal chart" and how astrology impacts his own life. David shares stories about how he works with clients who want to get a better understanding of their own natal chart and he explains what inspired him to become an astrologer. And we end the show by talking about his new children's book The Little Crab Finds A Friend, the inspiration behind the story and when we can expect the next book in the series. You can find David on IG @littlecrabastrology and you can also purchase his amazing book on AMAZON by clicking HERE. As always, thanks so much for listening and remember, I'm also very excited to say my new book SSAFY can be purchased by visiting SSAFYoga.com or on Amazon by clicking HERE and if you enjoy today's episode and you want to support the show, please subscribe to the podcast on iTUNES or Spotify. Kristina Michelle Blunt affectionately called Kris has been a mover "literally and figuratively," since she discovered dance at the age of nine. Dance was the beginning of finding form without words, expressing soul through movement, in addition to exploring the curious and bewildering nature of Self. Her love of dance led Kris to spectacular parts of the globe, allowing her to perform with reputable dance companies and eventually leading into to the healing practice of yoga. In 2007, Kris received her 200 hour teacher training certification through YogaWorks in New York City. Following her training, she immediately began leading a yoga warm up to the cast and crew of Broadway's The Lion King. In 2008, she returned to YogaWorks to deepen her knowledge of yoga and completed her 300 hour training. In 2011, Kris relocated to Las Vegas and currently teaches at Trufusion Summerlin and Blue Diamond locations, as well as Kintsugi. Kris is registered with Yoga Alliance, holds additional certifications in Pre-Natal, Yin and Restorative Yoga and has more than 108 hours in Yoga Anatomy. Although most yoga exercise is for the physical body, Yin focuses on empowering the mind so we can live a more carefree life and address the issues that keep us in a mental hamster wheel. Kris continues to shine her light and guide others effortlessly to feel "unstuck" from their everyday lives. https://www.instagram.com/krisblunt/
