Welcome back to the New Mom Boss Podcast! Big emotions in our kids are like a rite of passage for us parents. And because it's something we all go through, I've brought guest Emily Hamblin to the show to share her expertise. Emily is the creator and co-host of the Enlightening Motherhood podcast & life coaching business. As a mom of 4, former foster mom of 27, and educator of all ages, she definitely understands what it's like to feel overwhelmed with your children's intense behaviors & emotions. In our conversation, we explore the “big emotions” kids can experience and Emily shares her tips for handling those behaviors with confidence and patience. We talk about her family experience, the terrible two's (three's, four's…), and walk through a realistic example together. Even if you're pregnant, or are still in the infant stages, this information is so valuable to have when the time comes! You'll definitely want to listen in! Some big takeaways are: The human brain is not fully developed until about 25 years old. You are still a good mom, even if big emotions are a struggle for you or your child. Welcome back to the New Mom Boss Podcast! OBGYNs are an integral part of the pregnancy journey. But there's a problem in our culture when we over-rely on them for not just pregnancy, but the whole postpartum period. They might be great at delivering babies, but that doesn't mean they're an expert on the human body and all of its intricacies. Joining me to talk about this further is Tanya Tringali, the owner and founder of Mother Wit Maternity. She is a Certified Nurse-Midwife on a mission to provide wellness services that promote optimal pregnancy outcomes, safe and satisfying birth experiences, and ease the transition into parenthood. In this episode, we discuss the differences in postpartum care between the current healthcare system and midwifery, what the current system provides, and the things that should be advocated for elsewhere. We also talk about the strain of parenting on relationships, the importance of community, and hear more about Tanya's approach to postpartum care. Some big takeaways are: We need to demystify the role of an OBGYN. It's not the consumer's job to know what they don't know or identify what's wrong with themselves. Welcome back to the New Mom Boss Podcast! New parents often wonder how they are supposed to get quality sleep when their baby gets up every few hours. My guest Manu Brune and I explore this topic and discuss how to encourage proper sleep habits in babies so that everyone can benefit! Manu's story is very similar to mine, in that she had to call in the help of a professional to sleep train her firstborn because she was already pregnant with her second. And it worked after only three nights! Manu then became a pediatric sleep consultant to help other parents and new moms get over the same sleep struggles, while also working as a certified parent coach and postpartum doula. In our conversation, we talk more about setting your baby up with proper sleep habits, why parents are apprehensive to sleep train, and the importance of mimicking the womb in the fourth trimester. Some big takeaways are: Sleep training should not happen until the baby is about 15 weeks of adjusted age. Holding your newborn extra will not spoil them! New moms need at least 4-hour stretches of sleep to support their health. And so began a long and arduous journey to find the right treatment and get well for her family. In our conversation, we talk about the differences between standard anxiety and postpartum anxiety, how it can prevent proper bonding with baby, the signs and symptoms women can be on the lookout for, and what their first steps should be when seeking treatment. Some big takeaways are: Women with a history of mental illness are more prone to prenatal and perinatal mental disorders. Your primary doctor cannot help you as well as a perinatal psychiatrist can. Even if you've never suffered from a mental illness as a mom, you can help others by being educated and aware. Welcome back to the New Mom Boss Podcast! My guest, Markella Kaplani, has seen many moms suffer from an identity crisis in motherhood, coupled with the guilt and shame that tend to tag along. In our discussion, we talk about her personal story of a difficult postpartum, the problem of viewing motherhood as a role, matrescence and the motherly instinct, and the conflicting tension between being a successful mother and being a successful woman in today's society. Markella is a psychotherapist and a special educator focused on helping expecting and new mothers by addressing this potential identity crisis with confidence, making sure they feel validated and empowered. Some big takeaways are: Motherhood is something we grow into. Our brains actually change as new moms, forcing us to refocus on new priorities. Not everything about motherhood is instinctual - some of it has to be learned. Welcome back to the New Mom Boss Podcast! My guest Heather Ratych has made it her mission to help new moms by guiding them through all of the emotions that come with pregnancy and postpartum at her Ontario-based perinatal and maternal mental health clinic, Bloom Psychotherapy. As a Psychotherapist, Reproductive and Perinatal Specialist, and mom, Heather is all too familiar with the messages that torment women in this stage of life, and is passionate about supporting them in feeling grounded, confident, and connected. In our conversation, we talk about overwhelm, specifically how that looks in motherhood, what contributes to it, and why it's so difficult to simply ask for help. She's now passionate about sharing those tools with other mamas via her energy therapy and coaching business, The Calmer Mom Project. Her name is Kristen Noriega and she is a busy homeschool mom of four, a registered dietitian nutritionist, and host of the Baby Weight Nutritionist Podcast. She's been working with moms for over seven years as a go-to for simple nutrition, fun workouts, and creating a healthy family culture. Welcome back to the New Mom Boss Podcast! This is another co-hosted episode with my good friend Julie from The Beanbag Cafe Podcast with Julie Fernandes! In this episode, we discuss our approach to handling mom life when the current season is exhausting. We are both at a point where we have a lot on our plates, making life quite overwhelming. Our conversation is about how the exhaustion in motherhood can be all-consuming, leaving little energy to be the moms we want to be. We talk about pursuing harmony instead of balance, and how giving yourself permission to enjoy what you love can make all the difference in the daily grind. Some big takeaways are: Pursue harmony, not balance. You can't do everything all at once perfectly, and that's okay. Going with the flow is a mindset that's needed in the postpartum period. Welcome back to the New Mom Boss Podcast! Joining me on the podcast is Kim Perez, a Functional Nutritionist who guides and supports women through the transition into motherhood and beyond. Vitamin and mineral depletion is a very crucial piece to understanding our body's needs, and unfortunately, in the hustle and bustle of bringing a baby into the world, it is often overlooked. In this episode, Kim shares her personal journey that led to her passion for helping women in motherhood, we discuss the depletion problem most women face in pregnancy, the best foods to consume postpartum, and so much more! Welcome back to the New Mom Boss Podcast! In this episode, my guest, Katie Dewhurst, and I have a great discussion all about nutrition during pregnancy. We discuss how nutrition impacts a woman's pregnancy and fertility, how to maximize your health and your baby's health with prenatal vitamins, the science of blood sugar, and some very important tricks to introduce cleaner foods into your lifestyle without making drastic changes. Katie is a nutritionist and also studied functional medicine, specializing in female health & nutrition. She founded Hello Balance, a health and wellness company that helps millennial women optimize their health through food, and later expanded it into fertility and pregnancy nutrition. Welcome back to the New Mom Boss Podcast! We're told that connecting with the baby in utero is important, but why exactly is that the case? Answering this question is my guest Michelle Mintz, a certified Speech Language Pathologist, an expert in early childhood development, and the founder of Baby Blooming Moments™, a unique coaching experience designed to enhance the way we interact with babies and toddlers. Michelle explains why pursuing brain connections with your baby is so important, during pregnancy and after delivery. We discuss topics like separation anxiety, how to tweak what you're doing to enhance bonding, and even touch on the side-effects of the pandemic on “pandemic babies”.
