On Talkin' Hockey, we're all about the long weekends, and so of course we're here today, albeit in pre-recorded form! We've talked about both the opponents that they faced in the finals during their back to back Cup runs, so today we're talkin' Penguins! The 1991-92 squad had a bit of a roller coaster season before settling in to take Lord Stanley for the second straight year. Their coach, the legendary "Badger" Bob Johnson had to step down in the off-season when he was diagnosed with cancer, and sadly he passed away in November of 1991. The team was sold, also in November, to a couple of fellas from the Minnesota North Stars ownership group that they had vanquished the year before - a guess if you can't beat 'em, you buy 'em! On the ice, it was the usual cast of characters - Lemieux, Stevens, Francis, Jagr, and Mullen, plus steady Tom Barrasso between the pipes and a blue line featuring Paul Coffey and newcomer Larry Murphy. Ol' Paul got shipped out in February shakeup alongside Mark Recchi that steadied the squad, adding toughness with Rick Tocchet and Kjell Samuelsson coming in. They finished strong and blew through the playoffs, sweeping the Blackhawks in the finals.Speaking of playoffs, we'll catch you up on the current goings on as 3 of our 4 semi-finalists are set, with a big game 7 between Montreal and Buffalo set to go as we exit the airwaves today. Colorado and Vegas carry on the proud Jagr tradition this year, as both Brett Kulak and Rasmus Andersson played with the mulleted magician meaning that this is year marks the 46th (!!!) straight that the finals will feature a former teammate of ol' #68.Finally, co-host Tom slips into Mats Sundin's silky Swedish slacks and we break down the myriad of questions facing the Maple Leafs this off season.
Nattering E and CHEL S2 Ep 16 - Chayka Drafted Rick James It's been a crazy week for the Toronto Maple Leafs, as Torrey and Eric recap a lot of what happened the week prior with Fretz, from John Chayka and Mats Sundin taking over the management team to winning the draft lottery. We also look at the current playoffs and who might advance to the finals. We end on the Jays mounting a comeback against the Tampa Bay Rays. Also, Rick James gets mentioned in comparison to Keith Pelley. Right as the episode ended, we received breaking news, which is why episode 17 is also up this week. Catch us where you get your podcasts for Nattering With E and Visionaries Global Media.
Ben Ennis and Brent Gunning open Tuesday's show by celebrating Kevin Gausman becoming the ninth active pitcher to reach 2,000 career strikeouts. The boys debate whether his résumé puts him on a Hall of Fame track, or rather the “Hall of Very Good.” They then break down the Rays' 8-5 win over the Blue Jays with thoughts on Tampa Bay's continued success against Toronto, Gausman's rough outing, the Jays' lack of walks, Eric Lauer being DFA'd, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s slow start. After the break, they discuss the Leafs' new front office choosing not to retain Shane Doan, Mats Sundin's comments about no-move clauses and what they could mean for Morgan Rielly's future. This hour wraps up with the latest golf report focusing on Jordan Spieth's pursuit of a career Grand Slam. Host Brenden Escott takes a tour around the NHL playoff landscape and the league's biggest storylines in a jam-packed hockey conversation with the big boss over at SiriusXM NHL Network Radio, Peter Berce. The episode opens in Edmonton, where frustration continues to build after Evan Bouchard was left off the Norris Trophy finalist list despite another elite offensive season from the blue line. Was this simply a stacked year for candidates, or does Bouchard still face hurdles in how his overall game is perceived league-wide? The discussion then shifts to the broader state of the Edmonton Oilers and the mounting pressure surrounding a Stanley Cup-or-bust roster. How much scrutiny should be placed on management and coaching, and just how warm are the seats of GM Stan Bowman and head coach Kris Knoblauch as expectations continue to rise in Northern Alberta? In Toronto, chaos and excitement seem to be colliding at once. The Leafs followed one of the most polarizing press conferences in recent memory — surrounding the hiring of John Chayka and Mats Sundin — by winning the NHL Draft Lottery. The episode explores the public reaction to the moves, the debate now taking place inside Toronto's draft room and whether the Leafs should prioritize organizational need or simply take the best player available with the top selection. The Stanley Cup Playoffs also remain front and centre, with analysis of Montreal's Game 1 loss to Buffalo in the second round. What has stood out about the Canadiens' surprising playoff run, and how critical is it for Cole Caufield to rediscover his scoring touch? Plus, the Anaheim Ducks stun Vegas with a bounce-back win in the desert. What does Anaheim's response say about the belief and resilience of this young group?
