"Legislation... has not kept up with the pace of technological advancements, posing significant challenges for ensuring fairness in AI-driven hiring processes."-Matt SchererSummary:In this episode of "Science 4-Hire,"  I welcome Matt Scherer, Senior Policy Counsel for Workers' Rights at the Center for Democracy in Technology, a non-profit based in Washington, D.C. The CDT champions the advancement of civil rights in the digital age, striving to ensure technology respects and enhances individuals' rights and democratic values.Matt and I have an enthusiastic conversation about the importance of understanding and navigating the evolving landscape of AI and automation in hiring processes. Matt brings his expertise to the table, dissecting the intersection of emerging technologies with workplace rights, the nuances of AI legislation, and the vital role of public policy in safeguarding fairness and privacy. Matt and I dive right into some great dialogue about the challenges posed by electronic surveillance, automated management systems, and the quest to elevate worker voices through technology. We spend a good deal of time focusing on the critical evaluation of AI hiring tools, highlighting New York City's Local Law 144 and its implications for a broader regulatory framework. Matt provides some really interesting and important points about the criticality of using a design-first mentality in developing AI tools as a critical part of ensuring they serve to enhance worker empowerment rather than diminish it.Insightful Moments:Matt discusses the Center for Democracy in Technology's (CDT) mission to advance civil rights in the digital age, focusing on the workplace implications of emerging technologies such as AI and automated management systems. The CDT's commitment to this cause is grounded in ensuring technology serves to enhance, not undermine, workers' rights and privacy. The conversation highlights New York City's Local Law 144, examining its strengths and weaknesses in regulating AI hiring tools. Despite being a pioneering piece of legislation, Matt suggests that the law is riddled with loopholes that many companies exploit to avoid compliance, demonstrating the challenges in crafting effective regulatory frameworks.Matt emphasizes the importance of design-first thinking in developing AI technologies for hiring. He argues that most challenges associated with AI and automated hiring tools stem from design issues, advocating for a holistic approach that integrates ethical considerations from the outset. The dialogue touches on the role of transparency in AI-driven hiring processes.  Current practices often leave candidates in the dark about when and how they are being evaluated by AI, stressing the need for legislation that mandates clear disclosure to candidates. An exploration of upcoming legislation reveals a split between stronger regulatory regimes advocated by civil rights groups and more loophole-ridden proposals pushed by tech companies. This tension underscores the ongoing debate over how to effectively govern AI in hiring while protecting workers' rights.Matt shares insights into the civil rights standards for 21st-century employment selection procedures, a document aimed at modernizing and expanding upon the 50-year-old uniform guidelines for employee selection procedures. This initiative reflects a broader effort to update legal and ethical standards for employment assessments in light of advancements in AI and technology.

Matt Scherer, a retired Air Force public affairs supervisor, works with military professionals in transition.  He formed the Military Transition Roundtable with another veteran to assist veterans in transition through a MasterMind approach. The MasterMind concept dates back to meetings where executives like Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and Charles Schwab would form these groups to address the issues they faced with their businesses.Pulling together like-minded business leaders, these MasterMind groups allow everyone to share their issues and get insight from others.Today, the Military Transition Roundtable conducts six meetings to accommodate military professionals from the Far East to Europe.More on the MTR - https://lnkd.in/eV4uEu3YVisit my website: https://thehello.llc/THERESACARPENTERRead my writings on my blog: https://www.theresatapestries.com/Listen to other episodes on my podcast: https://storiesofservice.buzzsprout.com

The Best Logistics Team you Have Never Heard of with Matt Scherer Matt Scherer and Joe Lynch talk about The best logistics team you have never heard of. Matt has been helping thousands of people create, update and improve their LinkedIn profiles.   About Matt Scherer Matt Scherer has been helping thousands of military professionals, college students, and other business executives create, update and improve their LinkedIn profiles.  He is the author of "LinkedIn For Military", now in its third edition.  He and his team are also in the final stages of producing "LinkedIn for Learners," a book with the goal of helping high school and college students to make informed choices about their studies and career goals. About Scherer Communications Formed in 2005, the firm focuses on media relations, content development for trade publications and social media coaching.  His team has produced work for trade publications and has handled appearances for them on national and local news.  As a retired public affairs professional, Matt Scherer, the CEO, appeared at a military spokesman for Good Morning America and the CBS Morning News.   After leaving  Lowry AFB, Colo., he was honored with "Technical Sergeant David M. Scherer in the City and County of Denver Day" for his work in community affairs in Colorado. About Military Transition Roundtable Their non-profit helps military professionals in transition with forming a strategic journey towards a successful transition. Military transition Roundtable's mission is to create small working groups, using the MasterMind process developed by Napolean Hill in the early part of the 20th Century.  Since forming the non-profit over 18 months ago, the organization has helped more than 25 veterans find exceptional careers and other opportunities. Key Takeaways: The Best Logistics Team you Have Never Heard of Military logistics teams are often overlooked, but they are elite when it comes to transportation, logistics, and operations in difficult environments. Military logistics teams operate in VUCA environments where they need to support either front line troops or people in the midst of a humanitarian crisis. The military most likely invented logistics and few civilian organizations can match their operational might, scope, and performance on big stages. In the military, winning logistics is literally the difference between life and death. Military logisticians are well-trained, experienced, and they have been raised in a culture that expects leadership, accountability, sacrifice, ingenuity, and teamwork. They are the culture warriors every civilian organization should be looking for. Unfortunately, not all military logistics and supply chain professionals are successful in their transition to civilian life. For some the cultural divide and or communicating their worth to employers holds them back. Many Employers also overlook this underutilized well spring of talent because they come from a unique background. The Military Transition Roundtable is helping military veterans transition ease their journey from active duty to new career opportunities. Relationships are critical in business, regardless of your industry or what you offer your customers.   Matt Scherer, President of PMA Practice Transitions, a dental practice sales and transition company, spent nearly 17 years with Bank of America before embarking on his current role. While these two careers may appear to be completely separate, they actually have a lot in common.   In this episode of unsuitable, Matt shares his best networking, business development, and referral relationship tips so that you can drive results in your own company.   Networking isn't a 9-5 Job   Your business relationships don't pause when you leave the office, and most potential clients or partners are busy during the work day, so a lot of the most important networking and relationship-building you do will happen outside of work.   If you want to make the most of your network and build stronger relationships, you will want to listen and learn... Why you should focus on quality over quantity in your network. Who to target (and how to track them). How to build referrals.   If you liked this episode of unsuitable on Rea Radio, let us know by hitting the like button or by sharing it with your followers on social media.
