On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by blogger, podcaster and recurring guest Chris Ostrander (Two in the Box) for a discussion on several Buffalo Sabres topics, including reaction to Matthew Fairburn's Sabres piece in The Athletic last week, a rebuttal of sorts from a former team employee and Chris' post covering the hiring of Jarmo Kekäläinen as a senior adviser.Fairburn's piece that essentially concluded the Sabres organization has been like a hamster wheel caught the attention of many fans over the last week and Matthew talked about the article in depth as a guest on this show last Thursday. Today Chris offers his takes on Matthew's story, which not only brought to light Kevyn Adams' rise to power but more/less painted a gloomy picture of the organization, one that's easily deserved after 14 years of missing out on the playoffs. Also, a former Sabres social media manager (Craig Kanalley) wrote a piece on his Substack page that respectfully took issue with some of the topics from Fairburn's piece. The guys react to what they liked and didn't about Craig's post.Of course the real story with the Sabres is what they're going to do to improve this roster, perhaps dramatically and end their playoff drought. It's pretty safe to assume desperation mode needs to be activated for the organization and Chris has some thoughts on what that may entail. Plus, Chris discusses his post on the hire of Kekalainen as senior advisor, perhaps a little Buffalo Bills talk and more.Be sure to follow Chris on X at @2ITB_Buffalo and check out the Two in the Box blog in addition to the Instigator Podcast.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. On this rare weekend Saturday episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by sports broadcaster and recurring guest Steve Bermel to discuss a handful of Buffalo sports topics, including taking a long and perhaps painful look at what's kept the Buffalo Bills from reaching or winning a Super Bowl during the McBeane era.Following a 17-year drought Buffalo Bills fans obviously have a ton to be happy about. Buffalo has won the AFC East five consecutive seasons and have also won at least one postseason game each year during that run. They've also appeared in two AFC championship games and of course, have the reigning NFL MVP in quarterback Josh Allen. Life's been mostly good. However, this is also a team that has been Super Bowl favorites almost every year during that time and going by the ultimate standard and measure of success, have fallen short. The guys dive into four reasons, the biggest in Patrick's eyes for Buffalo failing to get over the hump and reach the Super Bowl for the first time since the early 1990's. That includes a defense that's been perfectly fine during the regular season but utterly imploded in every playoff elimination loss under head coach Sean McDermott. Speaking of, situational coaching has killed them on more than one occasion during this run, as has the lack of an edge rusher or cornerback making a truly meaningful play and last but not least, the most untimely drops from receivers. All are discussed. Also, Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic wrote an excellent story on the Buffalo Sabres this week and appeared on this podcast a few days ago to provide insight on it. The guys talk about that. They also talk about Steve being in the booth a few weeks ago and getting to call the Buffalo Bandits winning their third consecutive NLL championship in front of their rabid fans at the Key Bank Center. That and more.Follow Steve on Twitter @SteveBurmel.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matthew Fairburn from The Athletic to discuss his extremely informative and intriguing story that dropped earlier this week involving Terry Pegula, Kevyn Adams and the continuously dysfunctional Buffalo Sabres organization.Fairburn did a deep dive into the Sabres organization, one that has certainly caught the attention of many people including frustrated Sabres fans. For the story Fairburn sat down with the Sabres general manager in addition to speaking to no less than 10 different people involved with or having knowledge of the organization's inner workings. Before discussing the story specifically Patrick asks Matt some questions about the process of putting the piece together, including how long it took to do from start to finish, if he gets a sense for how much attention people like Adams and Pegula pay to media stuff out there, and if it's even worth the bother attempting to ask Pegula to speak on the record for stories anymore. It doesn't take long for the story to take shape, as barely four paragraphs in a gloomy----yet completely accurate portrayal is painted of the franchise. The guys talk about some of the key talking points from Fairburn's work, including Pegula not feeling his vision was being seen before promoting Adams, the (sad) truth about the team's spending habits in relations to the salary cap, many skeptical that Adams got the job to begin with considering he had no real experience at any hockey operational level especially scouting and what the present/future may hold. It's truly some excellent work from Matt and this was an informative chat with one of this market's best writers. You can follow Matt on Twitter at @MatthewFairburn and of course check out his coverage of the Sabres at The Athletic,Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. On this episode of Talking Patrick, Patrick Moran discusses with friend and recurring guest Tone Pucks whether new/once again Buffalo Sabres head coach was the right person to get tasked with putting an end to the team's historic playoff drought in addition to a conversation about the general direction of the team. Tone was on the show yesterday when the discussion centered on if the Buffalo Bills look like a team that's still going to be good in 2024. Today it's almost entirely about the Sabres. Following a 13th consecutive season of missing the playoffs, not only an extension of their own record but tying the New York Jets for the longest in major pro sports, Terry Pegula fired Don Granato and within a week Ruff was hired to once again take over. The guys talk about if have a problem with a wider coaching net not being cast before landing on Ruff as well as how much of the hire is about hockey and how much to perhaps help win back fans. There's also plenty to talk about with the team in general. Despite nearly everyone saying it's not going to happen, Tone is still convinced that the Sabres are going to end up getting rid of Jeff Skinner this summer, whether that comes through buy out or a trade and even uses an interesting Bills situation as a baseline for comparison. He also has thoughts on Matthew Fairburn recently saying on this show Dylan Cozens could eventually become a captain on this team in addition to thoughts on trading Casey Mittelstadt rather than paying him long term, not having a rush to get anyone in the pipeline onto the main roster and plenty more. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by frenemy and recurring guest Joe From Queens to discuss a pretty significant week in the landscape of Buffalo sports, including the firing of Buffalo Sabres head coach Don Granato and a report that Terry Pegula is willing to sell a chunk of the Buffalo Bills. Tim Graham of The Athletic broke the news late last week that Pegula is willing to put up around 25% of the Bills for sale, bringing in a minority partner but still maintaining a controlling interest in the franchise. The guys talk about why this is happening, what it means for now and what it may mean for the future. Also, the report says that no part of the Sabres is for sale but do the guys expect that to change? Sticking with The Athletic, it was a big week for the outlet as it pertains to Buffalo, as besides Graham's scoop on Bills ownership, Matthew Fairburn scored the first interview with now former Sabres head coach Don Granato after he was fired last week. The guys talk about the article, their takes on Granato getting fired and who's most to blame for it----and Joe has some takes/stories on Lindy Ruff, who's perceived as a realistic candidate to replace Granato. They also talk about the press conferences Brandon Beane, Sean McDermott and Josh Allen had as well as one final chat and Bills thoughts between the two before the NFL draft this coming Thursday and much more. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is recording/streaming live from Imperial Pizza in South Buffalo and is joined by Buffalo Sabres beat reporter Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic as well as Kris Baker of Sabres Prospect, who together form the Baker Fairburn Hockey Show for a conversation primarily focused on the Sabres in wake of the organization firing head coach Don Granato this past week. Its always nice to get together with Matthew for a chat and the timing couldn't be better on this one. The Sabres fired Granato the morning after the regular season finale, a surprise to many as it felt Terry Pegula would retain him going into next season seeing Granato had an extension. Matthew has several thoughts on the firing and why he believes it has to happen. Matthew was also at the arena this week for players locker room cleanout day and media availability and shares some of what he heard in addition to some thoughts on who can be the next head coach to take over. Could it be Lindy Ruff? Matthew has also covered the Buffalo Bills for The Athletic previously and the guys spend some time talking football, including getting Matthew's thoughts on Stefon Diggs and him being traded for Houston, the assumption that the Bills will take a wide receiver with their first draft pick next week and his thoughts on head coach Sean McDermott. That plus a little wings, Buffalo, media talk and much more. Shout out as always to Imperial Pizza for their great hospitality and killer wings. This show was recorded at the 1035 Abbott Road location but they also now have their 1655 Main Street location alive and kicking as well. This was fun. At Fattey Beer Company's Hamburg location, I'm joined by co-host Jim Monos and recurring guest Matthew Fairburn, of The Athletic, for our first Go Long Quarterback Draft. The rules are simple. We're drafting on the 2023 season alone. We each select seven quarterbacks in a snake format and, at season's end, take the best PFF grades from our top five guys. Whoever wins gets a free dinner at The Grange with the bill decided via credit-card roulette between the two losers. Monos earned the top pick... will he take Patrick Mahomes this time? Where will Josh Allen go? And, holy, does Monos have a surprise in store with his third pick. Enjoy, and be sure to catch Part 2 in the feed. Then, all three of us take calculated risks -- this is where the draft gets very interesting. A free dinner at The Grange is at stake, of course. We each will take the five best PFF grades from our seven quarterbacks.
