The offseason carousel kept spinning as Washington made a major push by acquiring Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch, with Tuch’s new $10.5 million AAV adding another layer to the Capitals’ aggressive retool. Chicago also jumped into the action by landing Bowen Byram and Jordan Greenway, raising the question of whether Connor Bedard is finally getting the support he needs. In Buffalo, Jarmo Kekäläinen takes over with the Sabres still searching for stability in goal, while Ottawa’s addition of William Eklund brings intrigue around where he fits and what Senators fans can expect. Calgary made a bold move of its own by acquiring Simon Nemec and Maxim Tsyplakov from New Jersey, adding more youth and upside to the Flames’ picture. In Edmonton, the Oilers introduced Mike Babcock and DJ Smith, with Ryan Rishaug speaking to Connor McDavid about what the new coaching setup could mean for a team still chasing the final step. Plus, the guys look at whether the Lightning, Penguins, Ducks, Stars, Blue Jackets and Mammoth have more moves coming, and whether Dallas will ultimately move Jason Robertson.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Boomer, Pinder and Rhett react to one of the biggest head-scratchers of the offseason after the Chicago Blackhawks paid a steep price to acquire Bowen Byram and Jordan Greenway from Buffalo. Giving up the 4th overall pick, Louis Crevier and another 2nd-rounder feels like a massive gamble for a team that still has plenty of holes to fill. Is this Kyle Davidson trying to speed up the rebuild around Connor Bedard, or did the Blackhawks just panic and sacrifice a premium draft pick they could regret for years? Jordan Greenway, like Conor Timmins last week, has returned from injury. Zach Metsa is back from Rochester. Buffalo's roster is as close to 100% as it has been all season (though they will likely lose Sam Carrick for a period), how Lindy Ruff refines his lineup now that he's spoiled for choice will be telling. Timmins and Logan Stanley had their ups and downs as a pair, but with Metsa back, is he the best choice for Stanley's partner? Is Greenway a lock for the fourth line? How do they manage their skaters once the playoffs open? We also devote some time to tryout season in youth hockey as families throughout Western New York will be navigating tryouts this week, or earlier in the month for the younger age groups. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Buffalo blogger and podcaster Chris to discuss both the Buffalo Bills and Sabres, including a segment devoted to eight potential upcoming scenarios for the Bills. As always this is an interesting time of the year for the Bills and every team in the NFL. It may not feel like it at the moment but championship teams are born or die over the next few months based on decisions made about players to re-sign, let walk, cut, trade away, trade for, sign in free agency and of course the NFL draft. Patrick points out eight potential scenarios that could happen with the Bills over the coming days and weeks and tasks Chris with playing general manager Brandon Beane for each. Chris discusses if he would make each proposed move or not and elaborates why. On the Sabres front the team is ready to return to action Saturday after a two week league-wide break for the Four Nations Face Off. Chris has thoughts on Lindy Ruff saying the Sabres can still back into the wild card mix by approaching games a certain way. He also comments on Jordan Greenway returning to the lineup, who he's likely playing with, why Zach Benson has been skating on the fourth line, Devon Levi owning the nets in Rochester and Chris' realistic expectations for the remaining 28 games. That plus sound issues that have plagued Talking Buffalo over the past few days, a few big show announcements and plenty more. Be sure to follow Chris on X at @2ITB_Buffalo and check out the Two in the Box blog in addition to the Instigator Podcast. 8:00AM Hour 3 Jeremy White and Joe DiBiase are joined by Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff. The guys kick it off talking Four Nations Faceoff, asking Lindy about what it's like to coach an event like that, what he thought of the Canada USA game on Saturday, and how impressive Sidney Crosby has been. Turning to the Sabres, Lindy gives an injury update, specifically on the importance of getting Jordan Greenway back.
On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Chris Ostrander (Two in the Box) to discuss the respective general managers of the Buffalo Bills and Sabres, Brandon Beane and Kevyn Adams finding themselves with the pressure cranked up to get things done in the coming weeks for varying reasons. It doesn't take a genius general manager or any sort of football guy to watch the Super Bowl and realize the true formula for success against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs is to create pressure with a four man rush with a dominant defensive line. Sure, the Bills have been within a field goal of the Chiefs in the past two playoffs but have fallen short for a handful of reasons, none so more than their inability to get defensive stops and pressure on Mahomes. The guys talk about several options out there in the coming weeks for Beane and the Bills and the intense pressure he's probably feeling to take a big swing at edge and/or interior defensive line, whether it's via trade or prominent free agent(s). As for the Sabres, they're cellar dwelling 54 games into the season as the league shuts down for two weeks for the 4 Nations Face Off. Chris has several thoughts on what Adams can and should do during this time to try and make a big move to help his team, assuming of course he remains on as general manager. If he does the NHL trade deadline is March 7th and you have to assume he'll do at least something. Chris discusses several possibilities in addition to what could happen with pending unrestricted free agents like Jason Zucker and Jordan Greenway as well as a handful of restricted free agents pending, including Ryan McLeod, JJ Peterka and Bowen Bryam. Be sure to follow Chris on X at @2ITB_Buffalo and check out the Two in the Box blog in addition to the Instigator Podcast.
