On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by longtime Buffalo News reporter and columnist Mike Harrington for an extensive Buffalo Sabres training camp preview. Training camp always seems to come quietly because the Buffalo Bills are a few games into their season, but camp for the Sabres this time around is the start of what will be a critical season as the hockey club tries to end it's NHL all-time record playoff drought at 13 years. Mike has plenty of thoughts on if general manager Kevyn Adams' job hangs in the balance of making the postseason, painting a potential picture where the Sabres could miss and he still kept his job. As for camp, there doesn't appear to be a lot of roster spots that aren't already locked in but that doesn't mean it will lack for storylines. Mike has takes on if he thinks Jason Zucker or Zach Benson will get first crack to skate with Dylan Cozens and Jack Quinn, is Jiri Kulich a legitimate candidate to crack the roster, how the bottom six is taking shape including newly re-signed Peyton Krebs, which makes Mike wonder if Krebs could become part of a trade. They also spend time talking about the goaltenders, if last season was the real version of UPL and how the No. 2 spot may play out between Devon Levi and James Reimer. That plus what Mike anticipates being different at camp now that Lindy Ruff is running things instead of Don Granato, what Buffalo needs to do to make the arena feel alive for home games again, the chances he thinks Buffalo makes the playoffs and tons more. Follow Mike Harrington on Twitter @ByMHarrington and of course support local journalism, which needs your support now more than ever by subscribing to The Buffalo News. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter: @PatrickMoranTB Facebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast YouTube: Talking Buffalo Podcast YouTube Channel Learn more about your ad choices. The Sabres hit training camp with 59 players but very few questions about what the final 23-man roster will look like. Kevyn Adams' offseason yielded a number of new additions and has left very few openings for a training camp surprise like Zach Benson last season. We run through Peyton Krebs' new contract, the new roof and scoreboard along with Buffalo's roster as they prepare to open camp on September 18.
Lance and Joe are back again and this time they've got Peyton Krebs' new contract to talk about, just like they knew they would. But wait, there's more. The Sabres wrapped up the Prospects Challenge this week and it was very difficult to leave that and wonder how Jiri Kulich finds his way on the Sabres roster this season. But will he? Hmm...There are loads of position battles, players to pick from, and hard decisions ahead for Lindy Ruff and Kevyn Adams when training camp opens on Wednesday morning and the guys go over as much of it as they can before they hit the ice. 11am Hour 2: Paul joins the show as the Sabres get ready for the preseason.
When last you heard from Lance and Joe, it was early July and the Buffalo Sabres had just made a massive trade and then the team did virtually nothing else since! The nerve! The guys are back this week talking all about the Sabres' star-studded lineup for the annual Prospects Challenge and they each pick three players they're excited to watch closely. With five first-round picks to choose from, surely some of them will be part of the fun, provided they don't try to one-up each other with different players. They also take some time out to discuss Peyton Krebs being--as of the recording in the mid-afternoon of September 12--still unsigned and what the heck is even going on there. Thanks for listening and thanks for letting us know you're enjoying the pod.Follow Lance and Joe on Twitter!Read Lance's work at The Buffalo NewsRead Joe's work at Noted Hockey and Bleacher ReportBig thanks to our musician friends --Intro: MerlinBerlin -- "Orbit" - Find them on BandcampOutro: Chips 'N Cellos -- Boss Fight (Sabre Dance, Khachaturian) - Find them on Bandcamp
