Jon Allen and Duke Heninger, of Utah-based Amplēo, have brought their finance game to fast-growing companies which are between $5m and $50m in revenue. They are “fractional CFOs” – that is experienced finance professionals advising these companies on a part-time basis. For instance, one business they work with, Korean barbeque restaurant Cupbop, appeared on ABC's Shark Tank and got $1million from Mark Cuban in 2022. Other companies they advised include Burt Brothers (a tire and services company). Collectively Amplēo helped more than 3000 companies. But they always find the same story when they look at financials at such companies. “It's always the data”, says Duke Heninger, Financial Partner at Amplēo. “It's getting things put in a way so that people can understand what they've even spent. Most of my clients are on a very simplified accounting system. They aren't classifying anything in separate departments. So it's breaking it out, trying to understand who owns what, where should it go, and ultimately everybody just sandbags just so that they don't trip a budget”. In this episode of FP&A we meet Jon Allen Managing Partner, Finance, and Duke Heninger, finance partner at Amplēo. They provide a masterclass on the value of FP&A at fast-growing companies, revealing: Our worst budget experiences Our journey through finance to CFO What we wish we had known earlier in our career Restaurants in COVID Times – how we used FP&A to help businesses The powerful value of FP&A in restaurants Why FP&A is a superb career choice Founding companies as finance leaders Teaching FP&A at University Why great FP&A must lead to actions and decisions How FP&A can become good business partners Reporting vs forecasting The importance of choosing a great finance leader to work for early in your career Getting out your chair and talking to people The last things we asked ChatGPT Follow Duke Heninger: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dukeh/ Follow Jon Allen https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonnyallen/ Amplēo provides business professionals, such as CFOs, CMOs and CHROs, to companies on a fractional basis in order to help them achieve their full potential. https://ampleo.com/

Cheryl Morse reports on findings from a study titled “Who are the New Vermonters?” The research emerged from conversations with rural geographers across the Global North who began to see new in-migration streams to the countryside at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. This moment of new in-migration to Vermont, and other rural places, provides us an opportunity to learn what newcomers expect of rural places, and therefore to anticipate their impacts on social, cultural, and physical landscapes. Initial findings suggest Vermont may be experiencing a first wave of migration motivated by multiple forms of environmental displacement, and lessons we are learning now could inform efforts to prepare for future newcomers. Cheryl Morse is Associate Professor of Geography, co-director of the Environmental Program, a Gund Institute affiliate, and a Food Systems Graduate Faculty member at the University of Vermont. She is a rural geographer who researches human-environment interactions. Broadly, her work is concerned with how people perceive, co-produce and experience rural places. Away from UVM, she spends as much time as possible outside at home in Underhill, Vermont, serves on the board of the Vermont Land Trust, and is involved with youth lacrosse. Covid-19 brought forth many challenges. With those challenges comes obstacles we never thought we would face alone. Infant loss doesn't take a back seat to troubling times. For mothers who have experienced this during the pandemic, the feelings and emotions have never been more substantial and more isolating. Between postpartum depression, anxiety, PTSD, and a looming sense of isolation, this episode talks about the power of being acknowledged and seen in your experience. Trust that you're not alone. Dr. Veronica Eyo, LCSW, talks about how to navigate these chapters of your life. Every person grieves differently, and Dr. Veronica's knowledge of finding support and healing on your terms can help break down the walls of singularity that infant loss can build around us. Acknowledgment and support are something mothers don't always receive. Understanding the impact that this could carry for mothers is something Dr. Veronica understands, and her strategies to help those heal from it are the first step toward acceptance. Meet Dr. Veronica Eyo As a licensed clinical social worker, Dr. Veronica is honored to be a part of that outside help for you. She has years of experience treating adults and couples that struggle with trauma, depression, anxiety, life transitions, relationship conflicts, parenting skills, social skills, and grief and loss. She specializes in working with mothers (new and seasoned) as they navigate their motherhood journey and managing symptoms of perinatal mental health. Her approach to therapy is a collaborative, client-centered approach using various evidence-based interventions, including cognitive-behavioral therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy. She obtained her Master's and a doctoral degree from the University of Southern California. Dr. Veronica strongly believes the client/therapist relationship is the most critical part of therapy. Therefore, she offers a free 15-minute phone consultation to help determine if she is the right fit. Learn more about her work. You can expect her sessions to be an empathetic, non-judgmental space that allows you to be vulnerable as she provides support, guidance, and structure. While no one wanted the lesson, COVID is a powerful teacher. We're learning a lesson about who and what is important in our lives. We're learning lessons about the importance of connection and the awfulness of loneliness. We're learning that while COVID affects our personal lives, our employers keep demanding its pound of flesh from us. Have you stopped to process what you've learned about yourself, those most important to you and about your community (including your workplace)? Jo Parsons holds many gifts in this yogic world. She is certified in the Baptiste style of yoga, has trained directly with Bernie Clark to deepen her Yin understanding and is a gifted Yoga Nidra guide. I'm honored to share space with Jo as a yoga mentor and as a friend. Jo and I spend some time talking about how the yoga industry has shifted since COVID has set in. "Every important decision about you is made in the room you're not in." - Sue Bunnell, quoting her powerhouse mentors. How do we bring women to more rooms where decisions are made? What are the type of leaders we need for the time we live in? How can you become one? How can you foster an environment of inclusion, understanding, and support in times of ambiguity? These are just some of the questions we dive into with Sue Bunnell, my guest for today's episode. Sue Bunnell is an SVP at Wells Fargo, where she has served for 20 years in a variety of legal roles. She currently leads a team that handles info security, technology, renewable energy, physical security, property management, construction, and a wide-ranging vendor transactional practice across the more than 6000 retail and administrative locations in 33 countries worldwide. She's has been a guiding voice on Wells Fargo's COVID-19 and pandemic response activities to keep essential workers and customers safe in Wells Fargo's facilities. Sue is also the President and co-Chair of LWT, a women's professional development and advancement non-profit that started here in the Bay Area, and now has year-long programs in San Francisco, Palo Alto, New York, and Seattle. She joined the Board of the Professional Business Women of California last year and is delighted to serve on the committee that puts on the annual Young Women's Professional Summit event for up-and-coming women in all industries. In this episode, Sue and I talk about: Her definition of leadership What type of leaders we need at this time Sue unpacks the key qualities and skills that make a good leader and how you can rise up to become one How to foster leadership skills among women and what each of us can do to become a better leader (LWT Program) How to approach conversations about promotion, or career change with empathy and curiosity, and the right questions you should be asking to understand the full context of why you didn't get the promotion What I appreciated most about this conversation, was the insider's scoop on how promotion decisions are made and how not to take unmet promotion desires personally or with disappointment which is why you need to understand the broader business context. This conversation is loaded with a lot of wisdom and practical tips so listen carefully and take notes :) *** Connect with Sue Bunnell LinkedIn LWT, Leading Women in Technology Program If you enjoy this podcast, please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcast. We touched on some heavy topics with light hearts and hope that listening to this allows some space for healing, laughter and realizing that we are not alone in the grief and current energy of our planet, community and family. The news regarding our American battle with the new coronavirus seems to get more dire with each passing day. I live in Florida, now considered the epicenter of the pandemic. And the president is stoking conspiracy theories and downplaying the seriousness of the virus that's now claimed almost 140,000 lives in the US alone. Today, we welcome Sonia Shah to the show. She's an investigative journalist and author of five books, including "Pandemic: Tracking Contagions from Cholera to Ebola and Beyond"), and has the cover story in the current issue of The Nation, "How to Define a Plague" or "It[s Time to Tell a New Story About Coronavirus--Our Lives Depend on It"
