Between the 1850's and the 1950's Brattleboro's Estey Organ Company built more than 500,000 reed organs. Jacob Estey, founder of the business, could not play an instrument, but was instrumental in the development of American musical tastes. This is the story of how it all began...

Tracy Bonham built a reputation as a "badass rocker" with "Mother, Mother," a powerful anthem that made it to #1 on Billboard's "Alternative Rock" charts. The song and her "The Burdens of Being Upright" album were nominated for two Grammy awards and led to arena tours with Aerosmith and the Blue Man Group. But in March 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down live music across the world, Tracy launched Melodeon in 2020. The new enterprise is aimed at teaching a younger audience she lovingly calls "young music enthusiasts." Inspired by Sesame Street, Electric Company and School House Rock, she created an innovative, music education curriculum for pre-school children. In April 2021, Tracy released her first children's album, Young Maestros along with a series of music videos. Click here to learn more about Tracey, Melodeon and songs like "Feeling Pretty Major," "I Like Big Beats" and "Let's Take the Subway."

Welcome to Stories Come to Life. I am your host, Kathryn Lopez Luker. During this time of Covid, many people aren't able to use the library in the same way as in the past. To help bring more stories to more readers, many publishing companies are allowing books that are normally unavailable for copyright reasons to be read out loud and shared with others until March 31, 2022. The stories that fall under that special permission will all be taken down on that date, so listen now, while they're available! Today's story is shared with permission of Penguin Random House Publishing Company. Just in time, a mysterious horseman rides up to help James and the girls hoist the melodeon into the church. The cavalryman makes a Christmas surprise happen, but he has a strange request. Can James possibly convince his grandfather to play the melodeon again after sixty some years? To find out, sit back, relax, and listen to this story come to life.

Today's story is shared with permission of Penguin Random House Publishing Company. James and his grandpa, Will Chubb, are taking their family's heirloom melodeon to the newly built church in time for the Christmas morning service. But there is a huge blizzard blowing, and the night is very, very cold. Will and James stop at two farmhouses to warm up, and at the second one, Grandpa falls asleep. James has to continue on, this time with four troublesome girls to help him hoist the organ off the stoneboat and into the church. Can they do it?To find out, sit back, relax, and listen to this story come to life.

The stories that fall under that special permission will all be taken down on that date, so listen now, while they're available! Today's story is shared with permission of Penguin Random House Publishing Company. Some of the happiest years of my life were when I lived in Michigan, especially the time I spent in the vicinity of Howell, in Livingston County. In some ways, I feel as if part of me will always be there, walking along the country roads, exploring along the banks of ponds and lakes, and even shivering during the cold but beautiful winters. I was so happy to discover this book by Glendon Swarthout, The Melodeon, that takes place just a few miles south of Howell! In this story, James is spending the year with his grandparents, Will and Ella Chubb, on their farm. Along with learning how to do farm chores and gather eggs, James also learns about his family history, including the story of how his great-grandmother Sarah received a beautiful melodeon from her husband as he left to fight in the Civil War. During a tremendous blizzard, James's grandmother, Ella, decides she wants to give that precious melodeon to the church for their Christmas Day services. How can Grandpa Will and James help this come to pass?To find out, sit back, relax, and listen to this story come to life.

The introduction of instrumental music in the Restoration movement can be traced back to an infamous melodeon snuck in and eventually out of the Midway Christian Church. Was it the "instrument of Satan" or a matter of preference. What did the men of the Restoration, Reformation, early church, and the New Testament have to say about the use of mechanical music in the church?
