A Coleraine pensioner, who uses a mobility scooter, was shot five times in the arms and legs by the UDA. But what possible excuse would the loyalist paramilitaries have for carrying out such a heinous act? The attack came just 48 hours after the PSNI had raided a brothel in the town which it publicly connected to the UDA. That brothel was run by Bulgarian pimps and police say they were paying protection money to loyalists. The two events appear to be connected. Ciarán Dunbar is joined by Sunday Life's Ciaran Barnes. On this episode of the Irish History Show we looked at the Plantation of Ulster. The Plantation was the colonisation of Ireland's northern province of Ulster by people from Britain during the reign of James VI and I. The official plantation began in 1609 in six of Ulster's nine counties, Donegal, Coleraine, Tyrone, Fermanagh, Armagh and Cavan. Lands in counties Antrim, Down and Monaghan were privately planted with Crown support. We have recently started a Patreon page for The Irish Story website and The Irish History Show. Derry has been campaigning for a full sized university campus for the last 60 years. The city still holds a grievance over the Lockwood report from 1965, which chose Coleraine for the location of the new university, rather than Derry's existing Magee College, then a Presbyterian theological college.I once interviewed Sir Kenneth Bloomfield, the former head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service, who told me that some of the unionist politicians of the time wanted to close Magee completely, but he persuaded them not to.That context continues to influence how the university debate is seen in Derry, where student numbers today are around 5,500, rising in the near term to 6,500. While this is progress, it is still a long way short of the 10,000 aspiration specified in Derry's regeneration plan, and which the former University for Derry group (which I co-ordinated) aspired to. It is even further behind the 20,000 student number that John Daly – economist for Ireland's Northern and Western Regional Assembly – reports would be consistent with those of other Irish cities of similar size. John is one of the interviewees in the latest Holywell Conversations podcast, where he discusses how a larger university campus would benefit Derry and the wider North West region. But the problem is not only that Derry has too few university students, it is that Northern Ireland also has too few. There are slightly under 70,000 higher education students, spread across Ulster, Queen's, the further education colleges and the two teacher training university colleges of Stranmillis and St Mary's. Of these 70, 000 students, 71% are from NI, 4% from GB, 3% from RoI, and 21% are non-EU international students, paying higher fees.Wales has more than twice the number of students; Scotland has more than four times; while England has over 2.3 million HE students. England's population is 30 times the size of Northern Ireland's, so our student population should be about 7,000 greater if it was equivalent to that of England. If it was equivalent to Scotland, we would have nearer to 100,000. One factor is that Northern Ireland, unlike England, subsidises tuition fees for local students, which in turn limits the number of local students. That is what is called the MaSN cap, or maximum student number. The Irish Republic has over 250,000 higher education students. So the Republic has slightly fewer university students than Scotland, in keeping with having a smaller population.Investments from Ireland are going into Derry's campus. The Irish government has provided €44.5m of capital to improve teaching facilities, which will reportedly enable an additional 1,800 students at the Derry campus. Ireland has also provided €10m to support 250 student nursing and midwifery places, of which 200 will be students from the South and 50 from the North. These numbers are split between Queen's and Ulster's Derry campus. Ireland is also subsidising Irish students at Derry's medical school, training a new generation of doctors. As well as this, Ireland's Shared Island Fund has commissioned the Royal Irish Academy to undertake a study into higher education provision in the cross-border North West region. Our latest podcast interviews Gerry McKenna of the Academy to hear what the findings are likely to be. Considerations include whether there should be an additional cross-border body overseeing higher education on the island.Ulster University provided a statement to us saying it “remains completely committed to growth at our campus in Derry~Londonderry,” adding that “substantial levels of investment, including from the University's own reserves and surpluses, will be made into the campus in coming years. There are more students on our campus in Derry~Londonderry than ever before and we will continue to expand student numbers so as to, with our partners, continue to grow our already very significant contribution to economic and social impact in the whole of the northwest of the island.”There is a lobby group, the Derry University Group, that is arguing for the creation of a new independent university in Derry. While they were invited to participate in the podcast, they declined to do so. This podcast, and previous editions of the Holywell Conversations, can be listened to at the Holywell Trust website.  Disclaimer: This project has received support from the Northern Ireland Community Relations Council which aims to promote a pluralist society characterised by equity, respect for diversity, and recognition of interdependence. The Nordic nations served up tension, drama and excitement in abundance at the weekend as several titles were decided by the narrowest of margins. The Swedish men's and women's titles came down to goal difference, as did a bonkers goal-laden battle for promotion in the Norwegian third tier. That got co-hosts Lee Wingate and Paul Watson racking their brains about the closest title races in history in Part 1, with England, Azerbaijan and Austria all getting a mention. As do Sexy Pants, who have unfortunately been relegated in Finland! There is a venture outside of Europe in Part 2 as Paul talks in-depth about the Te Runga Games, a quadrennial sports competition held in Kiribati – one of the most remote places in the world. There's also a word for Afghanistan, whose new coach Ashley Westwood faces a full-scale rebellion before the World Cup qualifier against Qatar, and Eritrea, who have pulled out of the tournament entirely because the country's authoritarian regime deems the players to be a flight risk. And finally there's a listener email from Ian, who was treated like a royal on a football trip to Tajikistan. It is back to Europe in Part 3 as Lee pays a visit to Austrian club Blau-Weiss Linz, whose former player Raphael Dwamena sadly passed away after collapsing during a match in Albania on Saturday. That story is followed by the news of the penalty shootout that took place in North Ireland between Coleraine and Ballymena, and is the third-longest in football history. To finish off, we talk about our upcoming trip to Paris to watch Tahitian champions AS Pirae take on sixth-tier Saint Meziery in the Coupe de France at the weekend. There are perhaps elements which are so relevant to menopause, which we can perhaps talk about as well in terms of symptoms such as hot flushes and heat intolerance, which again may exacerbate symptoms of MS. So, there may not be a biological difference, but the symptoms of menopause and perimenopause may influence and make worse MS symptoms, which is why I believe it's so important to recognise and point women in the right direction to get the right help." There is no evidence that Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) causes cancer. 15:19 Dr Siobhan Kirk: “There is no evidence that HRT causes breast cancer. But if you're taking extra hormones, and you've got abnormal cells, then the extra hormones can promote the growth of the abnormal cells. There's no increased risk of breast cancer with use of HRT under the age of 50, for earlier menopause, because you're just replacing what the uterus should be producing.” There is a lot of research taking place around the world on different aspects of living with MS including menopause. 34:12 Dr Jonathan White: “It is reassuring [for] someone living with MS to know that there is just a colossal amount of research going on around the world on all sorts of aspects of living with MS. I feel like reproductive health and women's health is getting to that place slowly. There's a really big push, I can see that in the research community and I'm glad to hear that menopause and post-reproductive health is getting it too.” Want to learn more about living a full and happy life with multiple sclerosis? Topics and Timestamps 00:56 The history of MS research with women (Helen) 08:15 Reproductive health and MS (Jonathan) 26:14 The Overcoming MS Program supports every aspect of women's health (Helen) 34:51 Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) (Jonathan) 47:41 Bladder issues with MS and menopause (Jonathan and Helen) Selected Key Takeaways More research is needed to understand menopause's effect on MS "The age group with the highest number of people with MS, both men and women, is now 55-64. So, if you think about [that] within the general MS population, that's obviously a very large number of women who are either menopausal or postmenopausal. But very, very few women over 50 are recruited for MS research trials. So, the effects of menopause on the lives and health of women with MS, in general, but also our response to DMTs, are very under-researched.” Inflammation can worsen as we age "‘Inflammageing' is a fascinating term, which essentially [means] the inflamed pro-inflammatory state that people exhibit as they get older. A lot of the conditions we develop at an older age are actually due to increases in inflammation. Cardiovascular disease would be a prime example of that. We think that ‘Inflammageing' certainly has a role in this mixed bag of MS and menopause, and of course, the obvious one to look at will be oestrogen deficiency. Is HRT beneficial if you have MS? There is some evidence to say that it is. But again, none of those studies are prospective or randomised control studies. Generally speaking, it's not recommended to take HRT just by virtue of having MS to protect yourself. But there's certainly no reason not to [take it] because you have MS [and menopause] and in fact, it may be beneficial. So, if you are struggling with the hot flushes, the night sweats or your urinary symptoms have suddenly got much worse, you're suffering from vaginal dryness, then this is definitely a conversation that you should be having." Bladder issues are common with MS and menopause "With MS in both males and females, we think up to between 50% and 70% of people will have bladder dysfunction due to MS. That usually affects the nerves supplying the muscle, the detrusor muscle in the bladder wall, and makes it very irritable, so it tends to be an overactive or urge problem with MS. That's also very common post-menopause, and the mechanism isn't entirely the same, but it does share a bit, and part of it is certainly to do with oestrogen deficiency."  Behind the Kellogg's Brand with Gráinne O'Brien: Ep. 36 of Red Sky Fuel for Thought Podcast What You'll Learn in This Episode:·     How an in-house brand team can get the best work from their agency partners·     Insights on communicating effectively through splits, spins and other catalysts of change within a business·     How to listen to the voice of the employee through employee resource groups In our annual predictions report, we said 2023 is the year in which Behind the Brand will become a staple theme in every content marketing strategy. We're certainly making it a theme of our own strategy because we've used episode 36 as an opportunity to roll out a new series called Behind the Brand. Rather than bring in several voices to weigh in on a topic (our normal format), we're pulling the curtain back on an iconic brand — Red Havas client Kellogg's — with a one-on-one interview with Gráinne O'Brien. She currently serves as senior director of corporate affairs for Kellogg Europe and in July will take on a new role as VP, corporate reputation and KNA Communications for Kellogg's. Kellogg's recently announced it will soon become two companies as a result of a company spin off. Kellanova will serve as its global snacking powerhouse, with a leading presence in international cereal and noodles, plant-based foods and North America frozen breakfast, while WK Kellogg Co, will become its North American food company. Nancy Anderson, our VP of social and content, kicks this episode off with a quick chat with Linda Descano, CFA® and EVP, who then embarks on a far-ranging one-on-one interview with Gráinne, starting with a recap of her career journey to date. Born in Northern Ireland, Gráinne tells how she grew up in Sligo. Her father was involved in the country's early civil rights movement with people like John Hume and Seamus Mallon, and her brother was a journalist, sparking her interest in current affairs and politics. She attended University of Ulster in Coleraine, where she studied media studies and history, before taking on post graduate work in journalism in the University College, Galway, under some of the finest journalist and writers in Ireland at the time. Post-college she got her first job with a local radio station and worked for three years covering everything from court cases to local council meetings to agricultural shows. She then migrated out of journalism into PR, when she became a press officer for the young farmers' lobby in Ireland. From there, she made her way into the agency world, working primarily for food and agri clients. In 2015, Gráinne joined Kellogg's Europe in Dublin to set up a regional comms function, before going on to head up its corporate affairs in 2019. As Gráinne tells it, “When I initially joined Kellogg's, I joined to lead the external comms work that we were doing across Europe. That was really about trying to identify the right stories to tell around our brands, across various different markets, and it was about trying to build a team that could do that. At the time, we were quite siloed, and we had various different reporting lines. That was one of the things I tried to fix first — that we were one team reporting into the function together so that we didn't have mixed priorities. Then I sort of created a vision for the team, which was having a best-in-class, agency-style in-house team. That rally cry unified us all.” Linda then asks Gráinne what in-house teams can do to get the best work out of their agency partners. As Gráinne sees it, “PR for the sake of doing PR is very old school thinking. It's so hard to cut through now, [so] you really want to work with agencies, partners, who help you be authentic and help you create the content and stories that will connect your brand or your company to consumers.” When working with these external partners, in-house teams have to be really clear about what they want to achieve, says Gráinne. And they need to understand whether or not they have a track record in certain spaces that qualifies them to tell those stories. She cites two examples from Kellogg's, about how it earned the right to speak on matters of food poverty and men's mental health. “We've invested a lot in measurement in my time in the role,” says Gráinne. “That's really helped inform the types of stories we tell and how we tell them. And it's had an impact across leadership because the more you can demonstrate your improved reach or your improved impact, the more you can argue for funds to execute, and the business takes notice.” When Linda brings up the three P's — the pandemic, polarizing politics and protest around social inequity — the two get to talking about brand purpose and how Kellogg's determines what to focus on and when to act. “Our brands are world famous,” says Gráinne. “They have long histories, and whoever is a particular brand manager at a given time is only a custodian of the brand. So, we did put a process in place. We ask ourselves a set of questions, whether we think a partnership will be deemed low risk or high risk. And if the proposal or the idea is deemed high risk, we go through a process to challenge ourselves around, ‘Do we have a track record in this space? And does it make sense for the brand? Would it make sense to consumers?' We want to avoid accusations such as greenwashing. So we have quite often referred to partners or taken external advice, or indeed [we] talk to our own employee resource groups around their thoughts. So that's the process we've put in place, and it's worked very effectively.” The two wind the episode down with talk of Kellogg's historic split into two businesses — a time Gráinne calls “phenomenally exciting,” explaining how they ushered employees through the changes.   “There has been a regular cadence of comms, have been town halls, have been surveys,” she says. “And the company has been very open and honest throughout the process. Even when we didn't have a lot of news, we engaged. And I think that has brought people through the change. I think people are optimistic for the future, and I think it's been a masterclass in how to do it.” Linda closes by asking Gráinne a few rapid-fire questions, including what her superpower is, to which she replies, “I don't think I have a superpower to be honest. What I would say is, I'm always authentic. I think it's great to work with people you like and to be kind. Even if it's a demanding, high-paced environment, I try to be authentic. I try and meet people where they are and understand what's going on in their personal lives, and at the same time deliver for the business.” Give “Red Sky Fuel for Thought” a listen, and subscribe to the show on iTunes, Spotify or your favorite podcasting app. Don't forget to rate and review to help more people find us!Also mentioned on this episode:·      Kellogg's support for school breakfast clubs·      Kellogg's Reaches Gender Parity Target, Three Years Ahead of 2025 Goal·      Kellogg's food hunger research  ·       Follow Red Havas for a daily dose of comms news:·      Twitter·      Facebook·      Instagram·      LinkedIn Subscribe:Don't forget to subscribe to the show using your favorite podcasting app.·      iTunes·      Spotify What did you love? Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, Lurch and I discuss our plans to expand Law Abiding Biker in 2023.  I started Law Abiding Biker in the Spring of 2013.  It began as a podcast followed by a YouTube Channel.  After a couple of years, I realized I would need to monetize Law Abiding Biker if I wanted to keep it going.  So, in 2015 I started a modest online store and our first product was our beloved Biker Gripper.  The Biker Gripper remains one of our best sellers to date.  The "store" was in my garage and my family helped me pack and ship.  It didn't take too long for us to figure out this was overwhelming for my family. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE About the time we figured out it was too much for us, Rick "Big Daddy" Kane came to me with a proposal to become the store manager and add more products to the store.  The "store" was moved to Big Daddy's garage.  He brought on many products and the store began to flourish.  Unfortunately, in 2017 Big Daddy's garage and house caught on fire and the store was a total loss.  Thank God Big Daddy was able to get out of the house and he was unharmed.  We started over from the ground up and moved into a storage unit.  In 2019, we found a commercial space in Richland, WA.   CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! The idea has always been to move the store to the Yakima area when Big Daddy retired from his Law Enforcement job.  He let us know last fall that he was retiring in 2023.  So, Lurch and I started looking for a store.  We had quite the adventure of finding something that would suit us.  In January of 2023, we found a building in Union Gap, WA, and purchased it.  The building is located between Lurch and me, and it is accessed easily from the Interstate.   The plan is to move the store to our new location in July 2023! Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis is a wonderful, wealth of knowledge for those living with MS! Their website and programs are always growing, and expanding to bring as many helpful tools, resources, and support to the community as possible. And I am proud to say that I've been collaborating with Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis for a few years now by offering MS-specific exercise videos and content. Today, I invited Dr. Jonathan White, who is an Overcoming MS medical advisor and event facilitator to share what OMS is and all it has to offer! Jonathan, more often known as Johnny, lives on the North Coast of Northern Ireland, is married to Jenny and father to Angus and Struan. He went to University of Glasgow Medical School, graduating in 2008 (MBChB). Jonathan completed a further five years of training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and is a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (MRCOG). He works at the Causeway Hospital, Coleraine and has a special interest in early pregnancy and recurrent pregnancy loss. He was diagnosed with RRMS in October 2015, and has been following the Overcoming MS Program ever since. His interests include the great outdoors, cycling and running (reluctantly), reading, rugby, film and spending time with his family. Dr. White assists Overcoming MS as a medical advisor and event facilitator. In April 2022 Jonathan was awarded “Doctor of the Year” at the inaugural Northern Ireland Health and Social Care Awards.
