The Record Store Day Podcast with Paul Myers

Grace Potter makes her Record Store Day Podcast debut to talk about her new album that is actually seventeen years old. In 2008, the Vermont-born, singer songwriter, and front person for Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, collaborated with the legendary T-Bone Burnett on a solo departure called Medicine, featuring Burnett and a crew of side players including Jim Keltner, Marc Ribot, Dennis Crouch, and Keefus Ciancia. It was a solid set and a bold personal statement but, at the time, Hollywood Records shelved the album indefinitely to concentrate on furthering her work with the Nocturnals. But now, it's finally seeing the light of day, and Grace graced us with the inside story on Medicine's long, long journey to the racks of your local independent record store. The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music.  Executive Producers (for Record Store Day) Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton. For the most up-to-date news about all things RSD, visit RecordStoreDay.com   Please consider subscribing to our podcast wherever you get podcasts, and tell your friends, we're here every week and we love making new friends.

Send us a textIt's a BRAND NEW episode of Bakotunes! I'm honored to welcome my guest Monique Powell of Save Ferris to the show! It was an opportunity I could not pass up and after a few tech delays, it finally happened. Monique and I go back to the early days of the band in Orange County, gigging alongside ska homies Reel Big Fish and more before getting swept up in the third wave ska craze and a hit single - a cover of Dexy's Midnight Runners 80s classic, "Come On Eileen"! That was followed with tours across the globe and back, in the van, and of course, tons of sweaty ska shows packed with sweaty, skankin' checkerboard kids. It was the nineties and it was a blast. Lots of fun facts and ska time warping! We also have classic Save Ferris music and their latest single, "Get Dancing!" that just dropped at all music outlets on 4/25. Enjoy! https://saveferris.com/**Episode features the songs "Come On Eileen," "Get Dancing", "The World Is New" by Save Ferris. Also contains excerpts from: "Orange County, CA (1976)", "MTV Skaturday", Save Ferris Honda Commercial, "Sid & Nancy", "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", "Teens React to 90s Ska Music".Sponsored by Chain Cohn Clark - Kern County's leading accident, injury, and workers' compensation law firm. Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! This episode, we look back at two hugely influential women artists – Patti Smith, whose 1975 “Horses” album inspired so many artists, and Marianne Faithfull, whose passing in January, 2025, is a huge loss.  “Horses”, with its confrontational approach - “Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine” - changed the landscape of rock music for the next few decades.  Produced by John Cale, of Velvet Underground fame, the album opened the door for so many women, including Blondie and so many English punk and new wave bands.  We talk about why we like this album, its influential impact, and how Patti Smith developed over later years. Marianne Faithfull has long been one of our favourites, and we talked about “Broken English” in Season 3. (If you haven't heard that episode, here's the link.) Tributes have come from every corner of the industry, all saying one thing – Marianne was inspirational to everyone she worked with, from The Rolling Stones to Metallica to Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. Banging our own drum for a moment, we've just been named as one of the top Australian Music Podcasts by monitoring service, Feedspot, which compiles the most comprehensive list of Australian Music Podcasts on the web. Great subjects.  Great episode.  Enjoy.  References:  Marianne Faithfull, Patti Smith, Andrew Loog Oldham, Sister Morphine, Girl on a Motorcycle, Samuel Beckett, homelessness, Hipgnosis, Storm Thorgerson, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, “The Memory Remains”, Metallica, Lars Ulrich, Warren Ellis, She Walks in Beauty, Graham Coxon, Blur, TOTO, “Africa”, “Hold The Line”, "Rosanna”, Robert Dimery, 1001 Albums You Must Listen to Before You Die,  Jim Morrison, oil shortage – 70's, Robert Mapplethorpe, Allen Lanier, Blue Öyster Cult, Tom Verlaine, Television, "Break It Up",  John Cale, “Gloria”, Van Morrison, “Marquee Moon”, “Land (Horses)”, “Radio Ethiopia”, “Wave”, “Easter”, “Because the Night”, Siouxsie Sioux, Siouxsie & The Banshees, R.E.M.,  Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Morrissey, Johnny Marr,  Courtney Love, Hole, PJ Harvey Episode playlistHorsesBroken EnglishMarianne Faithfull - Series 3, Episode 14

Prepare to be transported. Destination? Who knows, somewhere peaceful no doubt. Just get ready and enjoy the ride. My guest for this episode is making her fifth appearance on the show—Yasmin Williams (www.yasminwilliamsmusic.com), one of the most innovative and talented musicians I've ever heard. Yasmin is here to discuss her latest album Acadia, released in October 2024. Coming on the heels of her breakthrough 2021 release Urban Driftwood, Acadia establishes Yasmin as a true force in modern music. In this episode, we discuss the making of the new record—her first on a major label—and how she assembled an all-star cast of guest artists. We also talk about how her life has changed since Urban Driftwood and recording with the support of a major label. Mostly, though, we talk about the songs. The breathtaking, dreamy, evocative songs that will transport you to a better place. So sit back and welcome Yasmin Williams back to the show.

If you are looking for an album so definitive of our times—an album that exquisitely captures the chaos, the churn, the despair, and ultimately the hope of our world—look no further: LA-based Sons of Silver' (https://sonsofsilver.com/)s newest release Runaway Emotions is absolutely the one. Lead singer/songwriter Peter Argyropoulos has always been a bit of a soothsayer, as the band's first two EPs so clearly demonstrated. On Runaway Emotions, however, he takes it to a new level. In this episode, Peter joins me again to detail Runaway Emotions, his hopes and fears for the band and world, and so much more. We focus on four songs in particular—Running Out of Words, Nobody Minds, Hold Tight, and Friends. The album is rough, edgy, abrasive, yet tender. We dish on the state of the world, the music industry, and, of all things, wine. Check out this interview, then check them out on tour! Buckle up, ‘cause this one's a doozy!

If there's one lesson songwriters learn over and over again, it's that sometimes you just gotta let go. Sometimes you just gotta let the song work its way out on its own schedule. Just let it go. That's the trick my next guest leaned on for his band's latest single. Peter Argyropolous, lead singer and songwriter for LA-based rockers Sons of Silver, joins me to discuss Tell Me This, a classic, 70s-esque punk rocker released in early 2024. In addition to being a great friend of the show, Peter is also a fantastic interview. Coming off the heels of Sons of Silver's blistering 2022 EP Ordinary Sex Appeal, Peter opens up about the difficulties he had in finishing the song, especially its off-kilter lyrics. Peter also goes into detail about the band's struggles in dealing with new personnel and refurbishing their sound. We cover a bit of everything here—songwriting, guitar tech, and gearing up (hopefully) for a year of touring. So dig in and welcome one of my favorite recurring guests Peter Argyropolous back to For Songs.

Interview by Kris PetersSydney's chameleons of rock, RedHook have been pretty quiet since the release of their debut album Postcards From A Living Hell in April last year. And who could blame them?2023 was the year RedHook broke through from a band on the fringes of success to a bona fide international standard touring band, following high-profile shows with The Smashing Pumpkins and Janes Addiction on home turf and festivals such as Download abroad. Their work ethic as a band has always been the driving force behind their continued rise, but the release of their first album last year solidified their efforts and led to global recognition. So if the quartet took a bit of time off to recharge the batteries over a prolonged festive season, they certainly deserved it.But it was always a matter of when, not if they would return and that moment arrived with a massive bang earlier this month when RedHook released the single Scream 2 - a sequel of sorts to smash hit No Cure For Psycho. Not content to release new music and wait for it to filter through to the ears of their growing fanbase, RedHook this weekend venture North for the first time this year to headline Women In Rock. The night, as the name suggests, is a musical celebration of female artists and their contribution to the music scene, with Krave, Jollee, Veratie, Viper Syndicate, Acid Cherry and Miss LC rounding out the bill. With more live shows coming up and whispers in the air of more new music, HEAVY tracked Emmy, Ned and Alex down at their rehearsal room to chat more about everything."We're so excited to be heading back to the Sunshine Coast this Saturday," Emmy enthused. "We're coming to Caloundra for the very first time to play a groovy little festival called Women In Rock at the Norton Music Factory." We ask how the show came about and what such an occasion means for Australian music."We got hit up by the venue to be a part of it," Emmy began. "Supporting fem talent - especially in the heavy space - has always been very important to me, and the boys.""We're stoked that they invited us along," Alex added. "It looks like it's gonna be a really cool show.""Playing regional shows and grassroots venues and supporting that level of the industry is always important to us," Emmy continued, "and will always be important to us. We're just excited to meet some new people and play a new venue and have a good time."In the full interview, the band talk more about celebrating the achievements and role of women in music, the other bands playing and who they are looking forward to catching, the importance of everybody - not just women - to feel safe in the music industry, whether they feel the message is starting to get through, other things they have planned while they are in Queensland, new single Scream 2 and how it has been received, the reception for Postcards From A Living Hell, their continued rise as a band, how far advanced the new album is, their recent heavier leanings with new music, plans for the rest of 2024 and more.

If you've ever felt like there's just not enough time in the day, that the world is crashing down and you're feeling more pressure than you can handle, have I got the song for you. In this episode of For Songs Singles, I welcome back Lisset Diaz of the Havana-by-way-of-Nashville-based Sweet Lizzy Project (www.sweetlizzyproject.com). Lisset discusses the band's dynamite new single, Somebody Wake Me When It's Over. The song is a musical tour-de-force, a blistering rock opera that jumps out of your speakers right into your heart. Lyrically, the song addresses anxiety and the fear that there's just not enough time to accomplish your dreams. This is a true rock masterpiece and if there's any justice in the world, the band's guitarist and producer Miguel Comas will be the most sought after producer in the country after this single. So sit band and enjoy as Lisset Diaz returns to For Songs.
