Thirty years ago, Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Derek Dingle, and Michael Davis founded Milestone Media to try to encourage diversity both on the comics page and in the talent pool. Static (minus the “Shock” at this point) was deliberately conceived of as a youthful Spider-Man figure for a new generation and went on to become the publisher's most enduring character. We discuss the series' balance of social issues and good-old-fashioned superheroics, the way it deliberately avoids easy answers and simplistic characterizations, and how Milestone stacks up against the other “startup” universes of the 1990s.
We take a trip to the Dakotaverse to rave about MILESTONE COMICS, the legendary African-American creator-owned comic line founded in 1993 by Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis and Derek T. Dingle -- and we discuss the publisher's first four ongoing titles, HARDWARE, ICON, STATIC, and BLOOD SYNDICATE.
It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of Milestone Media, its creators, and their characters. But I haven't really tried to put my fandom into words until now. In this episode, you'll hear why Milestone matters to me so much.Watch my interview with Denys Cowan: https://youtu.be/jf9em0aTIGkGrab the Milestone Compendium at http://bjkicks.link/milestoneAbout Milestone:Milestone Media is a company best known for creating Milestone Comics, which were published and distributed by DC Comics and the Static Shock animated series. It was founded in 1993 by a coalition of African-American artists and writers, consisting of Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis and Derek T. Dingle. The founders felt that minorities were severely underrepresented in American comics and wished to address this.Learn More on their official website, http://milestone.media For More from Comics Are Dope:Get This Week in Comics, our weekly e-mail newsletter: http://thisweekincomics.comSubscribe on YouTube: http://youtube.com/@comicsaredopeJoin our online Discussion Communities:Facebook - http://bjkicks.link/communityDiscord - http://bjkicks.link/discord

Thirty years ago, Milestone Media dropped into comic shops. Their books were almost unrecognizable next to the other comics being published at the time. They were politically charged, radically motivated, and bursting with boundless creative energy. Founded by Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle, Milestone Media changed the game and delivered iconic characters like Static, Hardware, Blood Syndicate, Rocket, and, yeah, Icon. If you want to understand the context surrounding Milestone's creation and its profound impact on the industry, you need to check out the documentary Milestone Generations, currently streaming on HBO Max. Our guest this week, Evan Narcisse, worked extensively on the film. He's also been cranking out rad comics like Wildstorm vs. Waller and the short story "Universal Beings," which appeared in DC Comics' recent Milestone 30th Anniversary Special. "Universal Beings" is a magnificent tale, a catastrophic tiny epic that smashes the original Milestone Universe from 1993, with the updated version dominating comic shops today. Inspired by the classic multiversal comic "Flash of Two Worlds," Narcisse's story allows him to confront contemporary notions of progress while supplying a kickass superhero adventure. What would 1993's Static think of 2023's Static, and vice versa? The conversation is thematically charged like all good Milestone books. Narcisse also takes a moment to celebrate the genius of Dwayne McDuffie and all the eclectic voices that pulled Milestone out of nothingness and gifted the world the Dakotaverse, an unparalleled comics arena. In addition to relaunching these classic characters, DC Comics recently published two massive compendiums collecting the nineties Milestone stories. They are worth your attention. Also, be sure to follow Evan Narcisse on Twitter. Before Evan Narcisse joins the show, Lisa suffers through Brad's long-winded review of his 2023 WonderCon experience. You're paying attention if you can sense a little jealousy in that last sentence. Or is that envy? You'll have to listen to next week's podcast to answer that last question. Just know this, Brad had an amazing time in Anaheim, filled with all manner of creator interactions, panels, and comics purchasing. The WonderCon Review ends at the 21:56 minute mark.

What can be said about Boondocks that hasn't already - we're not sure, but maybe you just haven't heard it yet. This is week 3 of our focused series on Black creators in animation. The Boondocks was created by Aaron McGruder, featuring voice acting by Regina King, John Witherspoon, Gary Anthony Williams, Gabby Soleil, and many more. It was executive produced by Aaron McGruder, Rodney Barnes, Carl Jones, Reginald Hudlin, and Brian J. Cowan. Produced by Ayub Dahir Kim, Brian Ash, Denys Cowan, and once again Bryan J. Cowan. Spend some time looking each of them up. Not all of them are Black, but the vast majority are. To be able to watch this - even and especially with all of its flaws - puts into perspective the extreme failure of the industry for this not to be the exception that it is.
