Andrew & Tara CONTINUE Their Road to James Gunn's Superman giving their Superman Returns Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis, & Spoiler Review!! Join Andrew Gordon & Tara Erickson as they soar back to the Man of Steel's world in Bryan Singer's Superman Returns (2006). After a five-year absence, Clark Kent / Superman (Brandon Routh, Dodgeball, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) returns to Earth only to discover that his love, Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth, Blue Crush, 3000 Miles to Graceland), has moved on—and even has a young son, Jason. As Clark grapples with heartbreak, he uncovers a nefarious plot by Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey, American Beauty, The Usual Suspects) to use stolen Kryptonian technology to reforge the world in his image. Rounding out the stellar cast are James Marsden (Cyclops in X-Men, Enchanted) as Lois's fiancé Richard White, Parker Posey (the “Queen of Indies” in Party Girl, Best in Show) as tabloid editor Kitty Kowalski, Sam Huntington (Disturbia, I Am Number Four) as earnest photographer Jimmy Olsen, Frank Langella (Oscar-nominated for Frost/Nixon) as Perry White, and Kal Penn (Harold & Kumar, Designated Survivor) as Richard's brother, Stanford White. The spirit of Superman's father, Jor-El, is heard in archive audio of Marlon Brando (The Godfather, Apocalypse Now), tying this chapter back to the character's origins. Don't miss Tara & Andrew's breakdown of the film's most iconic moments—from the breathtaking sequence where Superman slows time to save Lois and Jason in that penthouse fall, to the jaw-dropping finale atop Lex's oceanic fortress, where Superman confronts a golden statue come to life. We'll discuss the soaring flight through Lois's apartment, the emotional “son of Krypton” reveal, and how Superman Returns balances nostalgia with new stakes for Earth's greatest hero. But upon arrival, Kent and the doorman, Morrisey, found her apartment ransacked, and there was no sign of Lois! What has happened to Lois? What was so urgent that Perry White called so late? How many episodes before Batman and Robin are called in? We'll get the answers to at least some of these questions in Part 1 of “The Story Of The Century!” Plus, in today's Important Message, now that the Swell Shell Casings have all run out, we're going to make some changes to our Swell Prizes Program. We also go deep on the cultural impact of Mr. Terrific, speculate on hidden cameos in Superman, debate the rise of spoof movies (Scary Movie 6, Spaceballs 2, Naked Gun reboot), and reflect on the pressures of content creation, mental health, addiction, and honesty in the YouTube world. This week, Shat the Movies finally kneels before Zod—and listener Chris Lloyd—by reviewing Superman II (1980), the sequel that gave us Terrence Stamp's immortal sneer, Margot Kidder's bathrobe thirst, and Christopher Reeve's blue-eyed beefcake perfection. This episode dives headfirst into the Donner vs. Lester debate, asks how much ejaculate the Fortress of Solitude can handle, and questions Lois Lane's true intentions once Clark Kent drops the glasses—and the powers. Gene and Big D examine everything from Superman's bizarre morality and dubious revenge tactics to the wildly impractical Phantom Zone prison system. They also debate if memory-wiping kisses and cellophane logos deserve a place in superhero canon and why Perry White's newsroom features a threatening photo of Bill Cosby. Whether you're team “Mormon Dad Superman” or “Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex,” this episode delivers laughs, awkward truths, and more than a few inappropriate questions about Kryptonian sex. Plot Summary After banishing Kryptonian rebels General Zod, Ursa, and Non to the Phantom Zone, Superman continues his life as Clark Kent—until a hydrogen bomb explosion in space releases the trio. Landing on Earth, they gain Superman's powers from the yellow sun and quickly set their sights on global domination. Meanwhile, Lois Lane grows suspicious of Clark's identity, prompting him to reveal his secret and sacrifice his powers to be with her. But when Zod and his cronies begin wreaking havoc—and Lex Luthor joins their side—Superman must reclaim his abilities and protect humanity. The final showdown brings the villains to the Fortress of Solitude, where Superman uses brains over brawn to save the world, while also redefining the meaning of romantic boundaries with a memory-erasing kiss. Join Andrew Gordon & Tara Erickson as they revisit the 1983 superhero romp Superman III, where Clark Kent / Superman (Christopher Reeve, Somewhere in Time, Superman II) faces his most unusual adversary yet—computer whiz Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor, Stir Crazy, Brewster's Millions). When small‐town tech genius Gus lands a gig with sinister oil baron Ross Webster (Robert Vaughn, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Bullitt), he's duped into synthesizing Kryptonite, creating an evil doppelgänger of the Man of Steel who rampages through Smallville in one of the film's most searched‐for scenes. Meanwhile, Lois Lane (Margot Kidder, The Amityville Horror, Black Christmas) juggles her investigative instincts with her growing suspicions about Superman's strange new behavior. Rounding out the cast are Annette O'Toole as Ross's calculating wife Vera Webster (noted for 3:10 to Yuma and later TV's Superman & Lois), Pamela Stephenson as socialite Lacy Warfield (comedian from Not The Nine O'Clock News), and Jackie Cooper as Daily Planet editor Perry White (the original Pete & Gladys), plus Marc McClure returning as the ever‐awed Jimmy Olsen (Superman, Superman II). Don't miss their take on the unforgettable sequence where Superman's alter ego lounges in Smallville's diner, the cheeky “cloning” of Superman by synthetic Kryptonite, and the climactic rooftop showdown that forces Clark to reclaim his true heroism. In this episode of Challenge Accepted, Frank and Thomas wrap up John Williams Month with a deep dive into the 1978 classic Superman: The Movie! They explore the film's lasting impact on superhero cinema, Christopher Reeve's legendary performance, and how John Williams' iconic score helped define the Man of Steel. From emotional storytelling to groundbreaking special effects, they discuss why this film remains a gold standard for superhero origin stories. Plus, they analyze how this Superman set the stage for the modern superhero genre and what lessons James Gunn might take for the upcoming Superman: Legacy. Strap in for a nostalgic and insightful discussion on the film that made audiences "believe a man could fly!" Timestamps and Topics: 00:00 – Introduction: Wrapping up John Williams Month with Superman (1978) 00:14 – First Impressions: How many times have we seen this classic? 00:24 – Christopher Reeve's Impact: The definitive Superman 00:47 – The Heart of Superman: Why this film still resonates 01:09 – The Film's Strengths & Weaknesses: Does it hold up today? 01:50 – Superman's Influence on Modern Superhero Films 02:30 – Lex Luthor's Portrayal: Gene Hackman's unique take on the character 03:00 – Iconic Moments & Special Effects: The magic of practical effects 04:00 – John Williams' Score: How music makes Superman feel larger than life 04:45 – The Legacy of Superman (1978): What it teaches today's superhero movies 05:30 – Looking Forward: Hopes for Superman: Legacy Key Takeaways: Christopher Reeve set the gold standard for Superman. His portrayal remains unmatched in charm, confidence, and hope. John Williams' score is a character in itself. The music elevates key moments, making them feel larger than life. The film's practical effects were groundbreaking. The flying sequences and large-scale destruction still hold up in many ways. Lex Luthor was portrayed with a mix of comedy and intelligence. Gene Hackman's take on the character remains a unique interpretation. Superman's humanity makes him relatable. His emotional reactions, especially to Lois Lane, show why he's a compelling hero. The newsroom setting perfectly captured the hustle of journalism. Perry White, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen brought energy to The Daily Planet. Without Superman (1978), modern superhero films wouldn't exist as we know them. The film paved the way for serious and big-budget superhero storytelling. Memorable Quotes:

For the latest Everything Action Commentary, Zach and Chris are joined again by special guest Phil from Digital Pimp to watch another terrible comic book movie, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. In the final Superman film starring Christopher Reeve, the madmen at The Cannon Group acquired the rights to Superman, even though they were hemorrhaging money, and pitted the Man of Steel against a radioactive glam rock villain, Nuclear Man (Mark Pillow) as part of Lex Luthor's (Gene Hackman) scheme. Margot Kidder, Marc McClure, and Jackie Cooper return as Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, and Perry White, respectively, while Jon Cryer co-stars as Lex's nephew Lenny, and Mariel Hemingway plays the horny new editor of The Daily Planet, Lacy Warfield. While watching the movie, the guys discuss how it seems like Gene Hackman had no restrictions on his wardrobe or set design, how most of the movie is a wacky 80s sitcom, Nuclear Man's absurd weakness to darkness, the bonkers gym scene, and more. You can watch Superman IV: The Quest for Peace on Max.
