There are nearly seven million Latter-day Saints in the United States today. And yet despite the growth of Latter-day Saints in foreign countries, the LDS church in the US continues to see a significant decline in its membership. Since 2021, the LDS church in the US has experienced a decline in membership in 21 states. Through the growth of available information on line, many LDS are discovering for the first time many of the problems with the church's history and theology that have until quite recently been kept secret from members. This week on the Profile President of Watchman Fellowship James K. Walker continues his conversation with Founder of Mormon Research Ministries and the Utah Christian Research Center, Bill McKeever.Bill McKeever founded Mormonism Research Ministry in 1979 with the hope of informing the Body of Christ about the differences between Mormonism and Christianity. He has also made an effort to reach out the many individuals who are members of the LDS Church, desiring to show them in gentleness and respect the truth about God's Word. The Book of Abraham is considered to be sacred scripture by mainstream Latter-day Saints today. Joseph Smith claimed that the Egyptian papyri from which the Book of Abraham had come was the authentic, autograph original of Abraham himself, detailing his sojourn in Egypt. But through a series of events, those original papyri which were thought to have been lost, resurfaced in 1966 in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It is now widely acknowledged, even by some in the mainstream LDS Church, that Smith's translation was not in accordance with what the papyri actually described. We continue with our July 2024 presentation from Eric Johnson of Mormonism Research Ministry (www.MRM.org) about Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon. Here on part two, Eric provides more details about the origins and translations of the Book of Abraham. We also feature a question-and-answer session with Eric and our Watchman Fellowship Utah Mission Team. This training took place at MRM's new Utah Christian Research Center in Draper, Utah (www.utahchristianresearchcenter.com).Eric Johnson has been a student of Mormonism since 1987 when he first served as a summer missionary to Utah. Who was Joseph Smith? Even after nearly 200 years since the first Book of Mormon was published in 1830, Smith remains something of an enigma. He is viewed as a charismatic farm-boy prophet and martyr by Latter-day Saints and a public enemy, adulterer, and charlatan by many others. How did Smith write the Book of Mormon and convince his followers he had received another testament of Jesus Christ? This week and next on the Profile, we feature Mormonism Research Ministry (www.MRM.org) staff member Eric Johnson. Our two-part broadcast is an exclusive training presentation Eric gave our Watchman Fellowship's Utah Mission Team this past July about Joseph Smith and how the Book of Mormon came to be. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is founded upon the Book of Mormon. But from where did the Book of Mormon originate? According to Joseph Smith, the founder of the LDS Church, the Book of Mormon comes from sacred gold plates he uncovered in 1827 near his home in Manchester, New York. What were these plates? How did Smith obtain them? How did he bring them back to his home? Where are they now? Find out this week and next as the Watchman Fellowship 2023 mission team to Utah sat down with author and missionary to LDS, Bill McKeever, of Mormon Research Ministry (mrm.org) to discuss these and other questions. How can you introduce the Christian faith to someone who thinks they already are Christian? My guest on this episode is from Mormonism Research Ministry, which is dedicated to reaching current and former Mormons with the true Gospel.Eric Johnson has been a student of Mormonism since 1987 and has written a number of books on this unique area of evangelism, including Sharing the Good News with Mormons which we had a conversation back on episode 5 of the podcast. His latest book is Introducing Christianity to Mormons: A Practical and Comparative Guide to What the Bible Teaches where he compares and contrasts Mormon views with the teaching of God's Word.In this episode we'll discuss how the doctrines of the Latter-Day Saints differ from Scripture, why a significant number of Mormons are not only leaving Mormonism but are abandoning religion altogether, and how we can effectively challenge their views with Scripture when they believe the Bible is true only “as far as it has been translated correctly.”We will also get into some of the very, very different theological views on God and Jesus Christ that Mormon missionaries typically won't get into when they knock on your door and discuss a game plan for how we can witness to Mormons that we interact with. You can see the show notes with additional resources from this conversation at ReasonableTheology.org/Mormon If you enjoy the Reasonable Theology Podcast go to ReasonableTheology.org/Subscribe and get the weekly email, which includes the latest article or podcast episode, a helpful theological definition, a painting depicting a scene from Scripture or church history, a musical selection to enrich your day, and the best book deal I've found that week to build your library.Support the show

Cole, Stan, and Will are joined by a very special guest, Eric Johnson of Mormonism Research Ministry (mrm.org). Eric has been studying Mormonism for 35 years and has made it his life's mission to see more Latter-day Saints come to a saving knowlege of the gospel through Christ alone. We were delighted to discuss his new book, Introducing Christianity To Mormons, to be released on September 13, 2022. This book is an incredibly helpful resource that explains the essential doctrines of the Christian faith in a way that a Mormon can understand without being confused by our differing definitions of terms. I recently reached out to the Mormonism Research Ministry and asked permission to read their booklet on my podcast. And they consented! The booklet is called "The Palmyra Revival & Mormon Origins" by Rev. Wesley Walters. His research goes over the accuracy of the revivals occurring in and around Palmyra, New York during the 1820s. His findings are revolutionary to understanding Mormon History.  While there is only little that I disagree with from the Mormonism Research Ministry (namely their teachings on the Bible), these findings are sound and undeniable and I thank them for this important contribution!

In this episode we take a deep dive into part two of the debate - Was there a Great Apostasy? The LDS position is that there was a great apostasy after the apostles died which necessitated a restored church, not just a reformed church. The LDS believe that they are that restored church. In this episode we review the arguments that Kwaku made for his position and then discuss why they don't actually make the case for the great apostasy. There is TONS of good info in this podcast. Aaron S. goes deep into the weeds on multiple topics. You will be educated and blessed from listening to this debate breakdown. We then breakdown the first part of the debate - Is salvation by faith alone? Aaron expands on his opening statements and then we discuss Kwaku's opening statement and the cross-examination rounds.
