Turkey's Erdogan has once again played up his country's importance on the world stage - especially when it comes to defense issues - telling Europeans that their security is “unthinkable without Turkey.” These comments come despite Ankara's well documented and aggressive moves in the region, from the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean to the Caucasus. Michael Rubin, the director of policy analysis at the Middle East Forum and a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, joins Thanos Davelis to discuss what Europe and countries in the region like Greece can do to address the challenge Turkey poses today. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:Greece Must Match Turkey's AggressivenessTurkey's growing defense industry deepening ties with European powersItalian research vessel departs Crete amid energy project uncertaintyGeopolitics freeze payments for Greece-Cyprus linkupTurkish Cypriot minister says UN meeting will lead nowhere

A revisionist approach towards history is among the most powerful weapons in the right's arsenal. Righting so-called historical wrongs is among the causes it dedicates itself most passionately to. Using history, the populist right manufactures a sense of victimhood within the majority and rewrites history to manufacture a glorious past that must then be recreated to make the nation great again. In Episode 2 of the All Indians Matter series that puts under the scanner the rise of the right, we look at revisionism as a political strategy. Learn more about your ad choices. Modern “antiracist” historians have pursued the myth that the virtuous North engaged in warfare with the South in order to free slaves and end chattel slavery. The historical record, however, tells a much different story.Original article: North and South in Antiracist Revisionism
We all remember what we were doing that day but do we all remember what we actually saw? I remember the day. I'd just arrived at my girlfriend's house and heard her brother shouting from the lounge. Her mom and brother were standing in front of the TV, watching the first tower billowing smoke. Then the next plane hit and we all thought it was the start of WW3.But what actually happened? My guest is known as 9/11 Revisionist and, boy, did he revise 9/11!
Historical revisionism is nothing new, and recent attempts to label an “antiracist” approach to history have wrongly been called “revisionist.” To better understand revisionism, one must first be grounded in reality, then apply reality-based thought to studying the past.Original article: Historical Revisionism: What It Is and What It Is Not

The BRICS+ summit was held in the Russian city of Kazan this past October. The original BRICS comprised four countries: Brazil, Russia, India, and China. The first meeting that they held was in 2009. South Africa joined in 2011. BRICS has now grown to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. The recent summit also invited 13 countries to the group as partner states. Countries that have expressed interest in joining BRICS include Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand (which is a U.S. treaty ally), and Turkey (which is a member of NATO).As countries in the Global South flock to form an increasingly significant geopolitical bloc in which China has assumed a leading role, it is important to understand how BRICS+ fits into China's foreign policy strategy and the role that the BRICS mechanism is likely to play going forward. To discuss these issues, host Bonnie Glaser is joined by Alexander Gabuev, director of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center which is based in Berlin. His research focuses on Chinese and Russian foreign policy. There are a myriad of criticisms against Islam propagated by non-Muslims in today's age. One of these criticisms accuses the Prophet ﷺ of marrying a child because of the ḥadīth mentioned in Bukhārī and Muslim. This paper focuses on two questions. First, are the claims that she was actually in her teens when she married accurate and are they strong enough to make us discard ʿĀʾisha's ḥadīth? Second, why did this become an issue in modern times when it was not an issue at the time the marriage took place?Note: The audio files are generated using AI technology. Jonathan Howard and Wendy Orent dive into the dangerous world of pandemic revisionism and vaccine misinformation spearheaded by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. They detail RFK Jr.'s extensive history of promoting anti-vaccine rhetoric and conspiracy theories, from false claims about COVID-19 targeting specific ethnic groups to his unfounded accusations linking vaccines to autism. The hosts warn about RFK Jr.'s recent alliance with Donald Trump and the frightening prospect of him influencing public health policies if Trump wins the 2024 election. Howard and Orient also stress the importance of resisting revisionist narratives about the pandemic and the harm that unchecked medical misinformation can cause. As the episode progresses, they outline the broader impact of such dangerous alliances, not just on public health, but on the very foundation of medical integrity. Sir Winston Churchill is almost unanimously regarded as a hero in Western society. In this country we voted him the Greatest Ever Briton; ahead of Shakespeare, Charles Darwin and Sir Isaac Newton.Churchill had significant flaws, including some caustic opinions and brutal decisions which were very much of their time. These flaws are widely-acknowledged.But not when it comes to the Second World War. Rallying the country to defeat the Nazis has always been considered, well, a good thing.Last week, history podcaster Darryl Cooper appeared on Tucker Carlson's show in a now-viral interview which included the claim that Churchill - not Hitler - was “the chief villain of the Second World War.” As we'll see, it didn't stop there.Debate has raged ever since. Not just about Churchill but about whether free speech and free-thinking applies to something as binary as historical fact.Eminent historian and author of "Churchill: Walking with Destiny", Andrew Roberts joins Piers to dissect the case.Followed by a debate with 'Part of the Problem' podcast host, Dave Smith & Babylon Bee CEO Seth Dillon Hosted on Acast. In a controversial move that has stoked significant debate and concern, Tucker Carlson, the conservative political commentator known for his polarizing views, recently hosted a figure on his show that has caused a stir across various sectors of society. Darryl Cooper, who appeared as a guest, is described as a "revisionist historian," a term that often signals a deviation from established historical consensus. During this segment, Cooper presented a version of World War II history that has raised eyebrows for what many are characterizing as a dangerous distortion of factual events. The episode in question saw Cooper promulgate a narrative of the Second World War that seemingly reserves judgment or even reinterprets the actions and roles of key figures and nations involved in the conflict. This approach to historical analysis is fraught with concerns, primarily because it can lead to a misunderstanding of the causes, nature, and consequences of the war. Revisionism, in the context of historical scholarship, often involves re-examining historical records and, in some cases, challenging orthodox views. However, it becomes contentious when it seeks to drastically alter widely accepted facts without substantial evidence, potentially whitewashing or minimizing the atrocities committed during such conflicts.World War II, a pivotal event in modern history, involved complex geopolitical dynamics and led to the loss of millions of lives, including the horrific events of the Holocaust. The attempt to reinterpret the actions and decisions of the Axis powers, if done without rigorous scholarly evidence and nuanced understanding, can trivialize the suffering of those who were victimized during the war years. Furthermore, it can also have a dangerous impact on public understanding of historical events, potentially fueling ideologies that have been widely discredited and condemned. The choice of Tucker Carlson to host a figure like Cooper and to explore such a contentious version of World War II history has, unsurprisingly, drawn criticism from historians, educators, and advocacy groups who emphasize the importance of accurate historical representation. Critics argue that giving a platform to revisionist narratives on mainstream media outlets can lend undue legitimacy to fringe theories that often lack the rigorous evidence and scholarly agreement surrounding historical events. The repercussions of airing such viewpoints extend beyond the academic community. They can influence public perception, potentially altering the way society remembers and learns from the past. This, in turn, underscores the responsibility of media figures and outlets in shaping public discourse. While the exploration of alternative viewpoints is a hallmark of free speech and intellectual inquiry, critics maintain that it is essential to distinguish between legitimate scholarly debate and the dissemination of narratives that can misinform or distort historical understanding. As discussions around this broadcast continue, the incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing debates surrounding media, historical interpretation, and the power of narratives in shaping our understanding of the world. The balance between free expression and the responsibility to provide accurate, evidence-based information remains a key challenge for broadcasters and commentators across the political spectrum.

The roots of the moon landing conspiracy theories trace back to a fundamental distrust in government. This sentiment was particularly inflamed during the 1960s and 70s, amidst the chilling winds of the Cold War and the fiery protests against the Vietnam War. The United States was a nation divided, its citizens wrestling with political disillusionment. In such an environment, the narrative that the moon landing could be a grand deception orchestrated by the U.S. government to assert dominance in the space race against the Soviet Union found fertile ground.
We talk about the crusades and the past and present trends of historical revisionism with our guests, the Kings Hall Podcast. https://www.kingshall.org/

When North Korea released a new song praising leader Kim Jong Un in April, the regime was likely not expecting it to go viral around the world. DPRK historian Peter Moody joins the podcast to discuss Pyongyang's latest hit, the popularity of North Korean girl bands and how they are influenced by K-pop, representative works that offer insight into what the country was like at the time of their creation, and his favorite North Korean song. Peter Moody is a PhD graduate of Columbia University and a research fellow at Sungkyunkwan University. He is a North Korea historian with research interests in ideology and music diplomacy who also follows contemporary trends in culture and domestic politics. About the podcast: The North Korea News Podcast is a weekly podcast hosted by Jacco Zwetsloot (@JaccoZed) exclusively for NK News.
David Botkin gets on the podcast to talk about how history is being rewritten, and some of the books that he has collected to preserve esoteric military data that used to be common knowledge. We also go down a bit of a rabbits trail involving data preservation methods, personal servers, and AI-generated Muppet war. This episode is something of a follow-up to the T.Rex Labs video on digital libraries.

Resident Oscars correspondent Kevin Sachs joins Carl & Eitan to discuss the 2024 Oscars ceremony. Beyond the ceremony itself, the boys name the most deserving snubs that should have been in the conversation. Carl also crowns the 2024 Goldfinch Award winner. Despite Oppenheimer's strong performance at the Oscars, Eitan & Carl refuse to concede the Awards Draft to Kevin until the WGA Awards are finalized.
Hey everyone. The following is an ad-free bonus audio essay that follows up on the recent conversation I had with the History Underground's J.D. Huitt, where I make some corrections and then provide some deeper context to my thinking about how we might fix the Holocaust Knowledge Gap via education. I will let the episode speak for itself, but I want to thank all of you for your constant support of the show and your patience as I work on the longer episodes.History Impossible has been made possible by the following generous supporters on Patreon, Substack, and PayPal. This month Cas and the movies team bring you the Top 10 4K discs and Blu-rays to watch in February and take a look at video and audio restorations and the balancing act when giving classic films a new lease of life in 4K.
In this newest special installment of History Impossible, we're joined by long-time friend of the podcast and friend of mine, J.D. Huitt, the man behind the incredible History Underground channel over on YouTube, probably one of the best historical travel and educational content creators in the game (who has more than earned his 600,000 subscribers). Both J.D. and I were DMing on Twitter/X recently, sharing our discomfort with the seeming spike we've been seeing of not just ignorance about the Holocaust—what we thought was one of the best known event of the 20th century—but also the skepticism and even downright denial of it as it's been traditionally known. This coincided with the Economist-reported YouGov poll released in late 2023 that showed a shocking 20 percent of young Americans believing the Holocaust was a myth, with more vastly underestimating the numbers. As it happens, this is a subject J.D. and I had discussed before in one of our conversations a number of years ago, and J.D. warned the audience that this was the natural consequence of poor education on this subject. Much as it's crude to say, we felt it was necessary to take a rueful victory lap on our concerns being confirmed. We discuss why this phenomenon has occurred in a bit more depth, while also offering some broader solutions to how one teaches such a horrifying event in a way that might stick with people, without it simply going in one ear and out the other. It's hard to say whether we succeed, so we'll let you be the judge of that.History Impossible has been made possible by the following generous supporters on Patreon, Substack, and PayPal. The 2006 Mel Gibson movie, Apocalypto, takes us into a decadent Maya civilization in the Yucatan on the eve of the Spanish Conquest of Mexico. It could be a commentary on ancient Rome or the present-day US, but, because it is a new world for both the viewer and the forest-dwelling protagonists, we get to see it through ‘new eyes' and a ‘beginner's mind.' It's a great movie, a cinematic masterpiece. It also allows us to ask how Mel Gibson, a devout Catholic and such a human sinner—as we all are, though when he does something terrible it's in the news—should proclaim the Gospel after he has fallen from his moral pedestal a few times. We also ask about how the Church should proceed given her many painful scandals. It was a great discussion on the Missio Dei podcast on YouTube and I'm delighted to share it here. Should Trump be allowed to stay on the ballot? As the Supreme Court prepares to hear arguments on the former president's eligibility due to his role in the January 6 insurrection, Ravi and guest co-host Isaac Saul discuss the legal and constitutional merits of the pending decision. The American public also has January 6 on its mind, with a new poll showing that a quarter of Americans believe the FBI instigated the attacks on the capitol. Ravi and Isaac discuss how public perception has changed over the past three years and how the politics of it all could shape the 2024 election. Finally, the Israeli government has signaled that it will shift to a new phase in its war against Hamas, but they can't agree about what a post-war Gaza could look like. The hosts break down the competing visions and ask whether anyone really has any plans for what many have come to call plans "the day after." Modern “antiracist” historians have pursued the myth that the virtuous North engaged in warfare with the South in order to free slaves and end chattel slavery. The historical record, however, tells a much different story.Original article: North and South in Antiracist Revisionism
Join Jim and Greg as they cheer Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin for making a strong case to permanently kill the horrible car tax that resident have to pay every year simply for owning a car. Then they dig into the Colorado Supreme Court's decision to ban Donald Trump from the 2024 Republican primary ballot because he allegedly led an insurrection, and that disqualifies him under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. But with no criminal charges of insurrection and a political acquittal, does the court have any grounds to do this? The U.S. Supreme Court will decide. They also blast White House National Security Council Spokesman John Kirby for trying to convince us that we really didn't leave tens of billions worth of military equipment behind in Afghanistan. Finally, be sure to catch Jim and Greg handing out their prestigious 3 Martini Lunch Awards starting Thursday and running through the end of the year. Right-wing history's comeback, it never went away, Salon.com, by Mike Lofgren, on Nov 4, 2023, https://www.salon.com/2023/11/04/right-wing-fake-history-is-making-a-big-comeback--but-it-never-went-away/
This week's episode features a great conversation with a returning guest, historian Dr Warren Throckmorton. From our previous conversation a few years ago, he's had a longstanding issue with the Christian nationalist "historian" David Barton of WallBuilders. Back in 2012, Barton's book The Jefferson Lies was pulled from the bookshelves by its Christian publisher, amid claims by Throckmorton and other evangelical historians that his take on Jefferson was wildly historically inaccurate. Recently, Throckmorton and his co-author Michael Coulter, have updated their original book Getting Jefferson Right, coming out with a 2nd edition including new information, as well as a look at Stephen Wolfe's book, The Case for Christian Nationalism. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did! More information on Getting Jefferson Right Join the MindShift Podcast Patreon Community! Follow me on X @MindShift2018
