If you've ever felt like you gained 1–2kg overnight despite eating well and training consistently, this episode is for you. In today's episode, I'm breaking down the real reasons behind water weight fluctuations – and why rapid changes on the scale are almost never body fat. I share my own recent experience with frustrating weight fluctuations (including one I'm currently navigating), and explain what's actually happening physiologically when your weight suddenly shifts.   I cover: ✅ How stress and cortisol cause fluid retention ✅ The sleep–cortisol cycle – and why poor sleep makes fluctuations worse ✅ The signs your cortisol may be out of balance ✅ The hidden, everyday stressors that keep your nervous system switched on ✅ Why water retention peaks before your period ✅ How low progesterone can amplify PMS and pre-period bloating ✅ The impact of carbs, salt and strength training on the scale ✅ This episode is your reminder that your body is responsive – not broken. Understanding what drives these fluctuations is incredibly freeing. It allows you to stop panicking, stop over-correcting, and instead take the right steps to stabilise things while continuing to move forward with your weight loss goals. If you're ready to properly understand your body and stop fearing normal fluctuations, this is a must-listen

E263: Service Work in Recovery: You Haven't Been Nominated to Drink Coffee

You Are Not Alone - A Recovery Podcast

Send us a textService work in AA recovery isn't about giving back - it's about belonging, commitment, and staying sober. "I don't even drink coffee.""That's fine. You haven't been nominated to drink coffee. You've been nominated to make coffee."Steve heard this exchange at his Thursday night men's meeting, and it might be the greatest line about service work ever spoken. Because that's exactly what service work is - doing something that isn't about you, that gets you connected, that gets you showing up.In this episode, Matt and Steve dig into service work in recovery - what it is, why people are afraid of it, and why it might be one of the most important parts of staying sober that nobody talks about enough.Matt opens up about his early motivation for service work, and it wasn't the noble "giving back" thing everyone talks about. It was simpler: "I wanted to feel like I belonged." He shares the story of being a door greeter at the Tuesday night Forbes Street meeting - scared out of his mind, showing up 30 minutes early every week, hugging everyone who walked in. By the end of 5 weeks, he knew everyone in that room. That's the power of service work.Steve talks about his journey from cleaning ashtrays and taking out trash at his Friday night men's meeting to doing district-level work 15+ years later. But here's what he says: "The most rewarding service work is still at the meeting level - because that's where you meet the new alcoholic, the fresh alcoholic who just came out of rehab or is just looking for a meeting."We break down what service work actually looks like:The basics: Putting away chairs, breaking down tables, making coffeeThe commitments: Chairing meetings, being treasurer, being secretaryThe next level: GSR (General Service Representative), district workThe often-overlooked one: Driving people to meetingsMatt shares the "dirty little secret" about service work: it gets you to go to meetings. When you have a commitment - coffee maker, chairperson, door greeter - you show up. You don't bail because you don't feel like it. You're expected to be there, so you go. And that commitment to the meeting becomes a commitment to your sobriety.Steve talks about why he keeps taking service commitments even after 15+ years: "It makes me part of that meeting so much more quickly. This Wednesday noon meeting, I've only been going for about a year and a half, and there are people who've been there for 20 years. But taking the coffee commitment puts me in as part of that group way faster than if I just show up and never do anything."We also tackle the fears people have about service work:"I'm too new" (Matt's fear early on)"I'll do it wrong" (Matt's coffee-making anxiety)"People will judge me"The truth: The stakes are incredibly low. You can't really screw this up.Plus: The story of Ted S. filling the entire percolator basket with coffee grounds because he'd never made coffee before (that's one STRONG cup), why the phone weighs 500 pounds but picking someone up for a meeting is huge service work, and Matt's realization that he never volunteered for coffee at the Monday meeting because he doesn't drink coffee there (problem solved - he's volunteering now).If you're new to recovery and wondering if you should takeSupport the show

Think the Boston Tea Party made America a coffee-drinking nation? Historian Michelle McDonald reveals the truth: colonists were already choosing coffee over tea because it was cheaper. Michelle Craig McDonald, the Librarian/Director of the Library & Museum at the American Philosophical Society and author of Coffee Nation: How One Commodity Transformed the Early United States, explains how coffee shaped American identity long before the Revolution. You'll hear about Revolutionary-era women storming a Boston warehouse to seize hoarded coffee and sell it at regulated prices. You'll discover why Parliament protected coffee while taxing tea. And you'll learn how enslaved Caribbean laborers made America's favorite beverage possible. From colonial coffee houses to debates about caffeine addiction in the early republic, discover how one imported commodity became distinctly American. Gogo Lomo-David joins us for a wild, soulful, and hilarious ride. You've seen Gogo in the Starbucks commercial (even though he doesn't drink coffee!), California Lottery, Apartments.com, and The Righteous Gemstones — now get to know the man behind the roles. Even as the face of Starbucks, Gogo admits he doesn't drink coffee — he's naturally wired thanks to his mom's pregnancy cravings for cola and strawberry yogurt. But for Pol and Patrik? He drinks Armenian coffee… and calls it “extra Black.” Gogo spills the tea on his career glow-up: a new commercial with Jennifer Coolidge, acting in Shameless, and two seasons on The Righteous Gemstones with Danny McBride, Walton Goggins, and John Goodman. He praises the cast's improv brilliance and the joy of being on such a dynamic set. Before the gigs, Gogo was an Uber driver. He met wild riders (including someone who discovered Lady Gaga) and endured bad ones (a drunk passenger dropping slurs). These stories reveal Gogo's grit — he drove Uber by day, auditioned by night, and built connections along the way. Gogo shares his African-American story: born in Pennsylvania, raised in North Carolina, and Nigerian by heritage. He teaches Pol and Patrik phrases in Pidgin English, mixing humor with heartfelt reflection. The heart of the episode comes when Pol performs a coffee reading. He sees deep love — a woman Gogo knows well, someone he's never dated but deeply connected to. Gogo opens up: they met in 2016, stayed close, but he backed away when feelings grew. The next day, her boyfriend broke up with her. Now? They're heading to a wedding in Italy — together.

According to the British Coffee Association, we drink around 98 million cups of coffee per day in the UK. That's around one and a half cups for every single person in the country! It's said that drinking coffee in the evening or even late afternoon has a negative impact on sleep quality, but a lot of people do so anyway. Coffee contains various molecules, such as antioxidants and caffeine, which has a psychostimulant effect and is therefore behind the links to disrupting sleep. Our bodies don't all metabolise caffeine in the same way though; that varies from person to person. Are some of us more sensitive to it than others? What quantity should we aim for? We also unpack the emotional side of food, the limits of macros alone, and how to finally build consistency by making space for being a real, imperfect person. What's really behind that “I know what to do, I'm just not doing it” feeling? What if you're not broken—just stuck in old coping patterns? What stories are you still carrying about your body? What if you stopped trying to be a robot—and let yourself be a human? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: Is taking milk with coffee good for you? What is the coffee cup test in job interviews? Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
May a Hotel Guest Drink Coffee That Was Prepared on Shabbat?

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 7, 2025

If a Jew spends Shabbat in a hotel, may he partake of the freshly-brewed coffee that the non-Jewish hotel staff prepared on Shabbat? The authorities who address this question make reference to a ruling of the Shulhan Aruch regarding food that a gentile prepared on Shabbat for other gentiles. In such a case, the Shulhan Aruch rules, a Jew may partake of the food only in situations of a special need. Generally, however, one should not partake of the food, even though the gentile had prepared it for other gentiles, and not for the Jew. Accordingly, the Ben Ish Hai (Rabbi Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909), in Parashat Teruma, rules that a Jewish hotel guest may not drink the coffee that the hotel staff prepared, even if he can assume that most of the hotel guests are not Jewish. Others, however, including the Zera Emet (Rabbi Yishmael of Modona, Italy, 18th century) and the Hida (Rav Haim Yosef David Azulai, 1724-1806), distinguish between the Shulhan Aruch's ruling and the case under discussion. The Shulhan Aruch spoke of bread which gentiles prepared on Shabbat. The flour used in preparing this bread was inedible when Shabbat began, and thus had the status of Mukse. For this reason, these authorities contend, the Shulhan Aruch did not allow partaking of the bread on Shabbat. Since the flour was Mukse when Shabbat began, it is forbidden for consumption throughout Shabbat even once it is made into bread. In the case of coffee, however, the water was suitable for consumption when Shabbat began, and thus did not have the status of Mukse. Regarding coffee, then, it is likely that the Shulhan Aruch would allow drinking coffee that was prepared on Shabbat by a gentile – provided, of course, that it was not prepared specifically for a Jew. Accordingly, Hacham Ovadia Yosef, in his Halichot Olam commentary to the Ben Ish Hai, rules that those who wish to be lenient and partake of the coffee in such a situation certainly have authorities on whom to rely. (He adds that the work Gedulat Elisha similarly rules leniently in this regard.) Hacham Ovadia notes, however, that one should not stand near the gentile making the coffee, as the gentile may then add more coffee specifically for the Jew. One may partake of the coffee only if it had already been prepared before the Jew arrived in the dining hall or wherever the coffee is served. It should be noted that one may not drink cappuccino prepared in a hotel on Shabbat, as cappuccino is generally prepared for each guest individually, and not collectively for all guests in the hotel. Finally, it goes without saying that the Jew must ascertain that all the ingredients in the coffee are strictly kosher. Summary: One who stays in a hotel on Shabbat may drink the coffee that was prepared by a gentile for the hotel guests on Shabbat, provided that most of the guests are not Jewish and that the coffee was not prepared specifically for him (or any other Jew). He should not stand near the gentile preparing the coffee, and should instead arrive at the area only after the coffee is prepared. Obviously, he must also ensure that the coffee is strictly kosher.
