Donald Trump won a second term in part because of a disingenuous populist message that was intended to harness the anger of poor Americans at a system that does not serve them. Their anger is righteous–and while Trump is certainly not doing anything that will change this, his presidency is at least in part a symptom of our national contempt for the poor. Sarah Jones' new book “Disposable: America's Contempt for the Underclass” digs into this problem, and we've invited her here to discuss it further.
Five years after the Covid pandemic gripped the nation, it's time to reflect on how socioeconomic status determined life or death. Sarah is a Tony-winning performer, writer, and director and the host of the America, Who Hurt You? podcast. As a Black woman from a multicultural background, she is devoted to building a movement that promotes collective healing and affirmation for all people, starting with Black women and femmes. Our conversation was in the wake of the election results, and both Sarah and I were navigating the weight of what was to come. Sarah's guidance to stay grounded through grief and fear is crucial for all of us in this current moment. We talk about the intersection of politics, identity, trauma, and wellness, as well as the over-saturation of information, misinformation, and disinformation. Sarah's ultimate call is one of hope: What is the healing that will bring us home to ourselves and to each other?
In today special 100th episode we shift to the heart of the UK government to hear first-hand from Construction Minister Sarah Jones MP about how she intends to embrace and accelerate infrastructure investment as a means to deliver the government's overarching mission for economic growth. The podcast was recorded live in front of an invited audience of professionals at last week's Twin Talks breakfast meeting hosted by Bentley Systems – just before the Chancellor Rachel Reeves set out her plans to cut through the planning and environmental blockers and accelerate a rake of nationally significant infrastructure projects such as the much discussed Heathrow third runway, East West Rail and the Oxford Cambridge Arc, Lower Thames Crossing, a raft of new reservoirs and a splurge of national wealth fund cash to underpin electric vehicle charging. As I discussed in last week's podcast with Skanska UK boss Katy Dowding, infrastructure is truly back in fashion and at the heart of the Labour government's increasingly desperate search for growth. So a great moment to chat to Sarah Jones, who was appointed as Minister of State at both the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, and the Department for Business and Trade, last July, having been elected as the MP for Croydon West in June 2017. Her busy, cross-department role brings up an interesting mix of responsibilities, all of which, of course, have major implications for the construction and infrastructure sectors as the government attempts to balance public sector ambitions for economic growth, higher living standards and better environment outcomes with the reality of constrained public finances and the need to truly engage private sector investment and innovation. We have truly got interesting, challenging and exciting times ahead. I started by finding out a bit more about her plans for delivery…ResourcesGovernment Industrial Strategy in the UK paperBold reforms to planing systemsConstruction Leadership CouncilSarah Jones MP websiteRachel Reeves speech - January 2025Transforming Infrastructure Performance

To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Our year end goal is to raise $50,000. Thank you for your continued support! Description: What does it take to be politically outspoken in Hollywood? You may know Amanda Seales from her role on HBO's “Insecure”, her stand-up comedy, her podcast and radio show or her viral videos on social media. She's lost agents, her publicist, and has had speaking gigs retracted for her commitment to social justice. From Black women to Palestinians in Gaza, Seales uses her platform to speak honestly about harm done to others. She talks powerfully about her experiences with the dangers of fame and celebrity in Hollywood, neurodivergence, white supremacy and a whole lot more. In this conversation, Laura Flanders asks Amanda Seales about our progress as a country, what it means to be an “artistic intellectual” and about the educators who've helped her along the way. Hear why Seales is “divesting from celebrity” and taking backlash from her support for Palestinians as “a badge of honor”. Plus, go behind the scenes with Seales with the full, uncut conversation from this week's show. Laura will tell you more.“. . . You are definitely expected to just take whatever gossip is said about you. You have to take it all on the chin because you've made this somehow unspoken exchange that having monetary gain and visibility means that you have to allow harm. And what I've decided is I am divesting from celebrity.” - Amanda Seales“I lost my agents, I lost my publicist, and I have definitely had speaking engagements and different gigs retracted because of my support of Palestine and my outward support of the ending of apartheid in Palestine. I got to tell you, I take it as a badge of honor. I do. It's good trouble, rest in peace to John Lewis. Automation holds immense potential for the product development process. Moving rote tasks from humans to artificial intelligence allows teams to focus their energy on the creative aspects of the job. It also streamlines the workflow, reducing samples and iterations, which in turn boosts efficiency and reduces waste. “You're… ultimately shifting teams from firefighting to adding value and helping businesses become more agile [and] creative while still being sustainable,” said Kristen Ohlsson, head of strategic solutions consulting at apparel design software firm Browzwear. To get the most out of AI, companies need to underpin the technology with digitalized systems and solid data management so that the machines are learning from the right information. Also critical is training so employees don't dread the technology. “AI is not there to replace your jobs,” said Lars Villumsen, strategic solutions architect consultant director at Browzwear. “It's to assist you on working smarter.” This conversation between Ohlsson, Villumsen and Sourcing Journal's senior editor, strategic content Sarah Jones covers what tasks should—and shouldn't—be automated and AI's future place in product creation. But what can be done about the fact that white women have a track record of voting more conservatively in the majority of presidential elections since 1950, even when a fellow white woman was an option? This week, host Sarah Jones talks to activist and organizer Shannon Watts about the often overlooked power white women hold in politics and why it's so consistently leveraged against their own interests. Our second ever female candidate is running for the highest office in the land– and the gender divide among Americans is at an all time high. This week, host Sarah Jones talks with Liz Plank, (a.k.a. Feministabulous) about the murky waters dividing men and women, and how to bridge across them in time to save democracy. If you're tired of running into the same road blocks every time you talk with a man about feminism, then Liz and Sarah are here to help! “Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.” But how long after serving their prison sentence should we punish people? And in an economy fueled in large part by the prison industrial complex, what kind of crimes should warrant keeping a person unemployed, unhoused, and in a cycle of poverty? This week, host Sarah Jones talks to Sheena Meade, the director of the Clean Slate Initiative, about the barriers Americans face when they're no longer behind bars. Anika's insights critically examine recent trends within the American right, particularly focusing on themes of misogyny, fertility, and family values. The discussion spotlights notable figures like J.D. Vance and Kamala Harris, and addresses the resurgence of patriarchy and natalism in American politics. Anika also highlights the influence of global right-wing alliances and the problematic rhetoric of folkish ideology. The episode sheds light on the mainstreaming of National Conservatism within the GOP and its implications for the future. Last week, as Israel continued to prosecute its eliminationist war against Palestinians in Gaza, an eclectic group of right-wing bigwigs gathered in Washington, DC for the fourth iteration of the National Conservatism conference — convened by Yarom Hazony, an Israeli-born writer, activist, and former speechwriter for Benjamin Netanyahu. As our guest, historian Suzanne Schneider, explains, Hazony aspires to export Israel's model of illiberal democracy and dispossession to the nations of the world. And if the embrace of NatCon by American conservatives is any indication, he is succeeding. Nations, for Hazony, derive their legitimacy not from the consent of the governed (which, for Israel, would include disenfranchised Palestinians in the West Bank) but from God, who designated the land of Israel as the home of the Jews. All nations are born of divine covenant, not consent; political community is based on unchosen and inherited obligations extending outward in concentric circles of coercion, from the nuclear family, to the clan, to the tribe, and so on. This slipshod political theology authorizes a world of sovereign, militarized ethno-states, intensely protective of patriarchal prerogatives, and with no obligation to international law, human rights, judicial interference, or constitutional guarantees for religious or racial minorities. If Israel is the God-given home of the Jews, why shouldn't America be the God-given home of white Christians? It's not difficult to perceive the appeal of this vision for NatCon's attendees, including Trumpist senators like Josh Hawley and Mike Lee, Catholic integralists like Gladdin Pappin and Chad Pecknold, racist nativists like Stephen Miller, or Viktor Orbán propagandists like John O'Sullivan. These figures may not all acknowledge or recognize their debt to Israeli Zionism, but they all look with admiration on the impunity with which Israel has treated its Arab subjects, seeing in Israel's contempt for liberal norms, universal rights, and human dignity an aspirational model for America and the globe.Further Reading:Suzanne Schneider, "Light Among the Nations," Jewish Currents, Sept 28, 2023— "How Israel's Illiberal Democracy Became a Model for the Right," Dissent, Spring 2024. — "Beyond Athens and Jerusalem," Strange Matters, Spring 2024.— "A Note on Means and Ends," Dr. Small Talk (Suzanne's Substack), Feb 4, 2024.Yoram Hazony, The Virtue of Nationalism (2018).— Conservatism: A Rediscovery (2022).Sarah Jones, "The Authoritarian Plot (Live from NatCon 4)," New York Magazine, Jul 14, 2024.Further Listening:KYE, The Rise of Illiberal Right, Jul 2019.KYE, Return of the National Conservatives, Nov 2021....and don't forget to subscribe to Know Your Enemy on Patreon to listen to all of our extensive catalogue of bonus episodes!
