Based on one of the greatest adventure stories ever told - Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island" - this film follows Jim's fantastic journey across a parallel universe as a cabin boy aboard a glittering space galleon. TriviaThe name of the ship, "R.L.S. Legacy", is a reference to the book's ("Treasure Island") author, Robert Louis Stevenson.B.E.N. sings a few bars from "Pirates of the Carribean", a pirate-themed attraction at the Disney's Magic Kingdom. As of 2011, this was Disney's biggest financial loss. Total cost: $180 million (including $40 million for advertising). Total worldwide gross: $101 million. Total loss: $79 million. This movie was pitched to Disney by John Musker and Ron Clements several times: (1) In 1985, during production on The Black Cauldron (1985), but they ended up assigned to direct The Great Mouse Detective (1986). (2) After directing The Little Mermaid (1989), but they ended up assigned to direct Aladdin (1992). (3) After directing Aladdin (1992), but the studio wanted them to direct Hercules (1997). Musker and Clements agreed to direct that movie only if they were allowed to make this movie right after it.The animators visited a Benihana restaurant to take notes for the scene where John Silver chops shrimp.Amelia, in the original design, was going to have tentacles for hair that would move and hold objects.Jim's clothes become lighter as this movie progresses, symbolizing his transformation from "bad boy" to "hero". Near the beginning, he wears a black t-shirt. During his adventure towards and on Treasure Planet, he wears a tan shirt. In the final scene, he wears a white military uniform.A planned sequel was cancelled due to this movie's failure at the box office, and when John Lasseter was appointed CEO of Walt Disney Animation Studios, his first task was to cancel all sequels and television shows. In the proposed treatment, Jim Hawkins and Kate, his love interest and classmate at the Royal Interstellar Academy, must team with Long John Silver to stop the villainous Ironbeard from freeing the inmates of Botany Bay Prison Asteroid. Willem Dafoe was set to voice Ironbeard. To enhance his "bad boy" reputation, the producers added a dark "mask" over Jim's eyes and gave him a black jacket, which he wears in most scenes for the first half of this movie. However, in the second half, he is no longer seen wearing the jacket and by the final scene, the "mask' is gone.On the planet in B.E.N.'s cave, Dr. Doppler says the phrase "Dangit Jim, I'm not a doctor. I mean I am, but it's a doctorate, it's not the same thing." This is a reference to Star Trek (1966), where Dr. Leonard H. "Bones" McCoy, always said "Damnit Jim, I'm a doctor, not a ____!" to Captain James T. On today's show: Film director Sean Baker and film critic Piers Marchant. First, a very recent conversation I had with filmmaker Sean Baker. I was so taken with Sean Baker's 2015 film TANGERINE, famously and beautifully shot from an Apple iPhone, that I started tracking down his earlier work, four fascinating films, including two brilliantly-executed micro-budget indies, 2004's TAKE OUT set in the world of NYC Chinese food delivery, and 2008's PRINCE OF BROADWAY, about an African immigrant selling knock-off designer bags who is unexpectedly left alone with a baby that might be his son. Baker's 2012 film STARLET centered around a friendship between an elderly widow and a sweet up-and-coming adult film star, played by Muriel Hemingway's daughter, Dree. But it was the 2015 film TANGERINE that was Baker's breakthrough, hitting the zeitgeist right as transgender issues were making big news and following two streetwalkers on a wild and unapologetic 24-hour tour through the Hollywood strip, and featuring incredible performances from first-time actresses Mya Taylor and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez. The pair were later part of the first Academy Award campaigns for openly transgender actresses. Now Baker follows-up TANGERINE with THE FLORIDA PROJECT, a fascinating ramble around the world of budget motels in Kissimmee, Florida. The film is mostly seen from the perspective of six year old Moonee, played by newcomer Brooklyn Prince and through her eyes, the rundown, kitschy motels and gaudy tourist traps seem just as enchanted as Disney's Magic Kingdom one town over. Her mother is played by Bria Vinaite who gives a downright feral performance as Moonee's loving but distracted mom and Willem Defoe exercises his compassionate side as the diplomatic motel manager Bobby. It's a film that vibrates with real life and its episodic quality allows the tightening dynamics of the plot to escape notice until its emotionally-tumultuous finale. It's also a film that captures childhood more vividly than any film in recent history as well as further exploring the themes of work, morality and people on society's fringes that is the hallmark of Baker's ever-more impressive filmography. I was given a chance to talk to Baker just before THE FLORIDA PROJECT screened at the Philadelphia Film Festival and when I saw the schedule I realized I was given 20 minutes just before Baker was due to walk on the festival's red carpet for a Saturday evening featured screening. I found Baker to be completely direct and unpretentious and would have loved to have him on for a more leisurely interview but as it was I was able to squeeze a few more minutes out of him for a half-hour of conversation. We talk about Baker's New Jersey roots, discovering Cassavetes, Ken Loach and the Dardenne Brothers, working with first-time actors, 70s Hollywood film, The Our Gang series, shooting on video and film and knowing how the movie is going to end. After the interview we'll go to an even more recent discussion with film critic Piers Marchant from PHILADELPHIA MAGAZINE and The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Piers and I get into a much more leisurely conversation, discussing Baker and THE FLORIDA PROJECT but also, BLADE RUNNER 2049, The Coen Brothers, George Lucas, the state of modern Hollywood and some of our favorite films of the 2017.

Hands down, no contest, my favorite time of year is Fall. With Fall comes my favorite holiday and that is Halloween. With that come two of the most highly anticipated events in the Orlando area. The first is Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party at Disney's Magic Kingdom which me and Melyssa will dive into. The seasonal party, held at night, features an exclusive fireworks, stage show, and parade while also giving the guests an opportunity to meet some of their favorite villains while trick or treating. It's lighthearted while serving up a family serving of spooky that everyone can enjoy. Over at Universal Studios, the scares come a bit harder though. This was my first Halloween Horror Night experience following years and years of wanting to be there but not having the opportunity. From haunted houses featuring properties like The Exorcist and The Walking Dead to original houses like Tomb of the Ancients, there is a ton to see and experience. Luckily I have an expert leading me through the darkened hallways as Jimmy Stiles joins the show this week. Are these events worth your hard earned dollar? What about the add on options? Lots to discuss! Let's go! It's showtime!

Unlocking The Magic: Talking all things Disney World and Disneyland
Leave us a quick review Unlocking Tomorrowland “A vista into a world of wondrous ideas, signifying man’s achievements … a step into the future, with predictions of constructive things to come. Tomorrow offers new frontiers in science, adventure, and ideals: the Atomic Age, the challenge of outer space, and the hope for a peaceful and unified world.” -Walt Disney. Dedication of Tomorrowland. Walt Disney loved exploring and imagining what the future would hold. Exciting innovations and progress were at the core of his heart. Visiting Tomorrowland inside the Magic Kingdom makes us feel connected to Walt Disney. Be sure to try to visit the land both day and at night as a lot of our favorite attractions are better experienced when the sun goes down. Attractions in Tomorrowland: Tomorrowland Transit Authority People Mover This iconic attraction is our first stop when entering Tomorrowland. It sets the tone of the entire area and makes you feel like this really may be the way people travel in the future. ;) Space Mountain Did you know that Space Mountain is actually astronaut approved?!! "With help from a NASA astronaut, Space Mountain opened in January 1975 at Magic Kingdom park. The idea originated with Walt Disney in the 1960s, but the technology did not exist to bring his vision to life. Later, when the attraction was given the green light, Mercury 9 and Gemini 5 astronaut Gordon Cooper joined the Space Mountain creative team as a consultant. He wanted to make sure that the attraction incorporated information gleaned during NASA’s early space missions and that the experience felt like actual space flight"- source disneyworld.com This attraction is pretty intense. Made for heights 44inches or taller, if you are anything like us you will definitely breathe a sigh of relief once the attraction comes to an end and you can see that everyone made it back alive. Ha! Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress A Disney Classic. Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress was personally created by Walt Disney for the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. It takes you into the history of progress from the 1920's to the "present" (1986 lol). With each era, you will learn how the technological advances of the day have made life more convenient. Definitely makes you appreciate the every day "little things" we so take for granted. We guarantee you'll come out singing, "Theres' A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow!!!" Stiches Great Escape An under- rated attraction that my kids still enjoy. It's lighthearted fun and a unique experience. Star Orbiter *Best to visit at night. It's actually waaay more thrilling than it appears from the ground below. Don't be ashamed if your rocket doesn't take the highest flight. Ha! Buzz Light Year Space Ranger Spin Such a fun attraction. Be sure to spin continuously to annoy your fellow space ranger LOL! Tomorrowland Speedway This attraction definitely tops Bruce's list as must do. There is nothing quite like this speedway and we know you will have a blast. Monsters Inc Laugh Floor The "Monsters" of this attraction discovered that laughter provides 10 times more energy to Monstropolis than a scream, so they put on quite an interactive show. It's hilariously fun and you just never know who they will pick in the audience to participate. With the arrival of several classic Disney video games due for HD-resurrections, the RetroCollect Squad - Chris and co-hosts Adam and Karl - are back to discuss these magical titles, alongside our knowledgeable addition to the podcasting team, Mike. While we might not agree on what the best titles from the magic kingdom actually are, we're all left reminiscing on a bygone time when those twinkly on-screen moments translated beautifully into video game form.
