Earlier this month, Retro Titans was invited to a special media day for journalists, influencers and creators, to get a rare opportunity to meet the people who run Blaze Entertainment and try out the new devices and games. We were under embargo until the end of the month, so this interview recorded with Crazy Burger reveals the highlights of the day and our revised take on new launches, like the Alpha, Tomb Raider and Bitmap Brothers 2.  Crazy Burger also gives us his take on all the releases and announcements so far in 2024, playing a game of 'Hit, Miss or Maybe'.

My guest today is an English fantasy author and champion of the video game industry. In 1975, while in his mid-twenties, he founded a boardgame company, Games Workshop, which soon caught the attention of the American creators of a new tabletop game, Dungeons and Dragons. My guest brokered a deal to sell D&D in the UK as a mail order company, and in 1977 opened the company's first retail shop in South London. In 1982 he published the first of the Fighting Fantasy books, which have now sold more than 20 million copies. He joined the video game industry and, at the publisher Eidos, helped bring the Tomb Raider and Hitman series to the world. In 2022 he was honoured with a knighthood for services to the games industry. “Play has always been seen as trivial,” he once said. “Yet when we arrive in this world, we all learn through play.” Welcome, Sir Ian Livingstone.Featuring clips from:Championship Manager (by Barry Leitch).Tomb Raider ( by Nathan McCree).Virtua Tennis (by Chiho Kobayashi). All other music by Simon Parkin. Louise Blain goes on a virtual city break, sampling the soundtracks of gaming's most compelling urban landscapes. She takes in some of the cities which are centre stage in video games such as Venice in Tomb Raider 2 with a score by Nathan McCree and the terrifying plague ridden imaginary city of Yharnam in Bloodborne, beautifully brought to life by the composer Tsukasa Saitoh and others. And to hear how music enhances these gaming metropolises, Louise hears from the composing duo Joe Henson and Alexis Smith - known as The Flight - who wrote the Ivor Novello award-winning score for Assassin's Creed Odyssey, which imagines the cities of ancient Greece.

Unfortunately, The Sound Test has been forced into a lengthy hiatus due to a very difficult personal situation I'm going through. Not only has my situation stopped me from working, but I don't even have access to my old equipment. It's not nice, and I wish I could keep the VGM going like I used to - but I'm far from done with The Sound Test. I miss it dearly, and still have many interviews to publish. So, I used my step-mother's laptop (yes!) to remaster this old show with Dale from the very beginning of 2019. That's why there are no pictures or anything fancy going on here - nevertheless, I hope you enjoy this time machine back to the past and I hope to see some of the old regulars in the LIVE chat!Original description:"Happy New Year! Welcome everyone and welcome BACK!   As you can see, I was blessed with an interview with Shelley Blond the original voice of Lara Croft this week, for which I’m eternally grateful. This week’s guest certainly bought out my inner fanboy! Shelley Blond is an actor and voice actor whose work includes west end stage productions and many a household name tv show, including Cold Feet, Peep Show, and feature films such as Snow White: the Sequel. She’s been a voice you’ve likely heard on Heart FM, ITV, Disney and Nat Geo, among many others, but perhaps the role most archaeologists and historians know her best for, is that of the original voice of Lara Croft...Tomb Raider.   The original tomb raider game was a hit on a scale hard to relate to our younger listeners out there. The first game of its kind, nobody, including the creators knew how people would react to a 3D third person exploration action adventure game. We take this genre for granted now, a quarter century later, but this was something never seen before, and it was a gamble. Tomb Raider sits at the threshold of where video games stopped being juvenile entertainment and began being conceived of as ‘cinematic’. The interaction, the musical score, and the performances made this game something modern audiences now take for granted – they made it an immersive experience. The 1st Tomb Raider game sold a million copies in its first quarter and went on to sell seven million worldwide, receiving critical acclaim and setting the standard for modern gaming as we know it. It went on to become one of the most influential games of all time and served as a template for the many action adventure exploration games to follow, driving 3D graphics technology as it did so. The series holds six official Guinness world records and Lara herself has become a world-wide icon. The character of Lara Croft has sometimes found herself at the centre of controversy – one of the first female protagonists in gaming, she was largely embraced by an -at that time – majority male gaming audience. However, Lara also sat at a sometimes uncomfortable point between sex icon and strong independent feminist protagonist, and it’s a conversation, since the reboot of the franchise, that fans and pundits are still having. At the genesis of this maelstrom of mainstream media attention was a young actress who had no notion of what she was getting herself into, or that she’d become forever linked to a cultural icon who rivals the likes of Indiana Jones and James Bond. I had the opportunity to speak with Shelley about her experiences as and with Lara Croft, so please welcome to the show, actor Shelley Blond.   As always, thank you for listening, and if you enjoyed that be sure to check out Shelley’s work on the mini documentary the History and Geography in Tomb Raider, you can find that over on YouTube here:  https://youtu.be/9xvPPsq_ou0   The Tomb Raider Suite, mentioned in this episode by Shelley, was composed by Nathan McCree, and performed by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra (conducted by Robert Ziegler). You can find more information, and limited edition cd's here (no affiliation):    https://www.tombraidersuite.com/   Last, but certainly not least, Shelley Blond can be found on twitter @BlondShelley  and is represented by @yaketyyakvoices   And be sure to check in next month for more explorations of historical, archaeological and environmental culture. I’ve been Dr Paul Harrison. Thanks for listening.

Before Hollywood film adaptations, and more reboots than you can shake a Desert Eagle at, [Tomb Raider](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomb_Raider) began life as a trilogy of revolutionary 3D platformers. Its slow, contemplative atmosphere was enhanced at every step by beautiful music from [Nathan McCree](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan_McCree). In this episode, Nathan discusses the audio for Tomb Raider I, II & III, along with some of his earliest work on the Sega Megadrive/Genesis. Nathan is a true legend of VGM, and his recent [Tomb Raider Suite](https://www.tombraidersuite.com/) is proof of his legacy. Every aspect of the original Core Design Tomb Raider series (and by extension the franchise's success post-Core) comes back to the grid that lies beneath it — the majority of the puzzles; the platforming; the cavernous chambers and ruins and outdoor areas that provide a sense of isolation, of solitude and discovery; and Lara Croft's iconic acrobatic movement style.  And yet it never would have happened if not for one pragmatic choice made by a programmer early in the game's development. This is the story of how that came to be, and how it made Tomb Raider…well, Tomb Raider, based on interviews with Heather Stevens (née Gibson) and Gavin Rummery as well as my past work covering Tomb Raider's history as a freelancer. Nathan McCree has an album coming out soon called the Tomb Raider Suite that contains fully orchestrated renditions from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of reworked material from the first three Tomb Raider games, recorded at Abbey Road Studios. You can learn more about it https://www.tombraidersuite.com/ (here). The original Tomb Raider game is available digitally on PC, Mac, PlayStation 3 and Vita, and mobile through several different storefronts. If you buy the HD-ified iOS version via http://lifeandtimes.games/tr1-ios (lifeandtimes.games/tr1-ios) then I'll get a small cut of the sale price. (It's actually the best version, provided you have an external gamepad you can use.)
