We walk the Streets of the Royal City of Rabanastre!Ryan Laney (Airship Overdrive) takes us through how this piece of music from Final Fantasy XII (12) evokes the feel of hustle and bustle and city life. Plus, how Hitoshi Sakimoto evolves it to mirror the events of the story, and how it contrasts to the music Downtown. Final Fantasy 12 has some devastatingly beautiful music, and only one single song on the entire soundtrack was written by Nobuo Uematsu. The rest was done by Hitoshi Sakimoto, with some additional contributions by Masaharu Iwata. While we all miss Nobuo Uematsu, Hitoshi Sakimoto absolutely nailed it on this soundtrack. It's incredible! Mike and Casen come out of this episode with an even higher opinion of this OST and a greater excitement to dive back into the game in the possibly near future.... **We're Now On Spotify**: https://open.spotify.com/show/4gIzzvT3AfRHjGlfF8kFW3 **Listen On Soundcloud**: https://soundcloud.com/resonantarc **Listen On iTunes**: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/state-of-the-arc-podcast/id1121795837 **Listen On Pocket Cast**: http://pca.st/NJsJ Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/resonantarc Subscribe Star: https://www.subscribestar.com/resonant-arc Twitter: https://twitter.com/resonantarc Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/resonantarc Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/resonantarc TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@resonantarc

2025 Rerun Notes: In commemoration of this month release of the last-ever Mishmash Monday on Channel 1, I thought I'd rerun the first two installments of the series - both from all the way back in 2017 (Season 1 of the show). Therefore, all the obvious caveats on "absolutely atrocious production quality" and blah blah blah (especially on C1E10, the earlier of the two releases). Though today's rerun is officially, canonically the "second" Mishmash Monday, it's actually the first "for real" Mishmash Monday. The first "actual free play episode". Not that it was produced before C1E10, but released later, but that C1E10 was a "Mishmash Monday" in name only, and was definitely not a true free play. I'll explain in that episode's rerun. But for now, numbers and dates aside, this was our first actual "free play" episode in NNR history. And even though the production quality is so absolutely horrible, I still regard this episode as an excellent collection of music! Easily in our top 50% of show history, and perhaps even top 25%. So, enjoy! Original 2017 show notes below! ------------------------------------------------------------------ Today's broadcast is Episode 16 for Mishmash Monday, October 9th, 2017 on a program we're calling "Mishmash Monday - vol. 2". Today's broadcast is C1E95 for VibeOff Vrijdag, May 9th, 2025. Today's broadcast will be a one-time-only special twist on a FaceOff Friday, where, instead of comparing different versions of the same track against each other, we're comparing pairs (and occasionally trios) of different songs against each other which either have similar movements, or melodies, or instrumentation, or simply just vibes and asking you, the listener to not only tell us which one you like better, but whether or not the comparisons are even valid, and how strongly or weakly if so. So, in lieu of an 8th and final FaceOff Friday episode, Nerd Noise Radio is pleased to present: VibeOff Vrijdag (Vrijdag = the Dutch word for Friday). See the show notes for a link to a document which will allow you to grade me on these comparisons if you so choose! Like many of Square's RPGs of the late 90's and early 2000's, Vagrant Story is an ambitious, flawed, divisive and fantastic RPG, full of big ideas that didn't get a chance to full develop into what was planned. What we got was only one part of a larger saga (see also: Xenogears from just a few years prior), a game that stands on its own, proudly displaying all of the rough edges and brilliant ideas for all to see. We're always comparing transforming robots and their flight forms to schmup ships. Well, maybe it's time to turn the tables. As per a listener request, let's talk about a schmup ship, and... ok well, I guess we don't really compare it to robots much. Except the one that is a robot! Or two. Two that are robots. It's a handheld celebration! We had so much fun with our Game Boy Advance music episode last fall, we're back for two more handheld episodes, starting with the Nintendo DS! Nintendo's little experimental handheld made waves upon its announcement, and once the dust settled on many gimmicky titles, some great games made their way into our hearts. And as you'll hear today, some great music as well, featuring the likes of Hitoshi Sakimoto, Michiru Yamane, Yasunori Mistuda, and more. It's time for another composer spotlight on Rhythm Encounter, and this time we're celebrating the works of Hiroki Kikuta. Many RPG fans know his work on the Mana series — particularly Secret of Mana and Trials of Mana — but there's much more to Kikuta than many people know. From a PSone game that never left Japan to his contributions to many indie games today, today's episode digs into the many hats Hiroki Kikuta has worn over the years. We hope you discover new facets to his work as some of us did on this episode! If you want more composer episodes when you are done, check out episodes 108 and 61, where we spotlighted Hitoshi Sakimoto and Yoko Shimomura, respectively.Featuring: Mike Salbato, Hilary Andreff, Patrick Gann, Greg Delmage; Edited by Paul DennisLinks for this episode Valiant Mirror Website Soukaigi - Fire Wire TracklistFiji Block0:08:13 - Where Angel Fear to Tread (Hiroki Kikuta, arr. We're back with another theme episode! It's Stage 1 music from Shmups, STGs, Bullet hell, whatever you want to call it. I got the idea for the playlist when doing the Hitoshi Sakimoto episode because I have a ton of these games that I wanted to talk about and while some of them will definitely get full episodes in future, and there's plenty of games not on this list I can talk about, it seemed ilke a fun excuse to nerd out about some classics as well as a few deeper cuts. Justus was kind enough to join us and provide some expertise on the genre, as well some really interesting chats about FM Synthesis. 00:00:00 Manabu Namiki - Burning Halloween Town: Stage A-1 (deathsmiles original sound track) 00:03:42 Talk 01 00:16:56 Manabu Namiki - Ran (Stage1) (DODONPACHI SAIDAIOUJOU / DODONPACHI MAXIMUM ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK) 00:20:22 Manabu Namiki - Mutiny - Fate is with the Girl (Stage1) (ESPGALUDA II Original Sound Track) 00:24:34 Manabu Namiki - Setting Off Together (Stage 1) (Mushihimesama Futari Original Sound Track) 00:27:42 Manabu Namiki - To Shinju Forest - Stage1 (Mushihimesama Original Sound Track) 00:31:30 Talk 02 00:44:35 Manabu Namiki; Jake Kaufman - INTERCEPTION - Town in Upheaval (Stage1) (DO-DON-PACHI DAI-FUKKATSU BLACK LABEL Arrange Mode Album) 00:47:49 Takeshi Miyamoto - The Timid yet Noble Warrior (Stage A-1) (DEATHSMILES for iPhone/iPod Touch ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK) 00:50:37 Manabu Namiki - Fly to the Leaden Sky [STAGE1- VALLEY] (Battle Garegga) 00:52:05 Takuya Hanaoka; Shigenori Masuko - Stage 1 (AirGrave) 00:55:05 Talk 03 01:06:50 Manabu Namiki - Easy To Go [Stage 1 BGM / Manhattan City] (Armed Police Batrider Remaster) 01:08:43 Atsuhiro Motoyama - Sorcer Striker (Round 1) (Mahou Daisakusen Original Soundtrack) 01:11:51 Atsuhiro Motoyama - Scramble! A remarkable blend of PS2 visuals, tactical combat, rogue-like elements, and horror atmosphere set to a Hitoshi Sakimoto soundtrack, the fifth game in Capcom's signature turn-based RPG series is as unique as it is challenging. Three RPGFan staff of various experience levels tackled Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter with open minds and full hearts this week, but how do they feel? Listen and learn! Reese couldn't join me this week so I brought a guest along to talk about some Hitoshi Sakimoto tracks for the 3rd episode of Masters of VGM this year. I really wanted to highlight some of Sakimoto's lesser known stuff so there's no Ogre Battle or Final Fantasy here but I'm sure you'll agree it's a fine selection of more obscure tracks from one of the all time greats. Whether you know him from his legendary work on Final Fantasy Tactics or elsewhere, odds are you at least know composer Hitoshi Sakimoto's name. And while he often gets talked about for his work in those Ivalice titles like FFT, Final Fantasy XII, and Vagrant Story, Sakimoto has worked on a fascinating variety of game soundtracks, dating back to 1988!As fascinating as it is that he worked on music for Radiant Silvergun and Gradius V, today we are, of course, discussing Sakimoto's music in RPGs, including four new-to-Rhythm Encounter game debuts. There are sure to be some surprises, but there's only one way to know for sure — find out!Featuring: Mike Salbato, Hilary Andreff, Audra Bowling, Greg Delmage; Edited by Jono LoganLinks for this episode Hitoshi Sakimoto on VGMdb Rhythm Encounter 5 - Ormond Alliance | RPGFan Rhythm Encounter 40 - Back to School | RPGFan Rhythm Encounter 71 - Press Start: Title Screen Music | RPGFan Retro Encounter 283 - Crimson Shroud | RPGFan Tracklist & Order0:16:05 - Brand Logo ~ Title Back (Hitoshi Sakimoto) - Final Fantasy Tactics OST0:17:12 - Dawn on Leá Monde - Vagrant Story (Hitoshi Sakimoto) - Vagrant Story OST0:36:56 - Revolt (Hitoshi Sakimoto) - Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber OST0:40:10 - Limitation (Hitoshi Sakimoto) - Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together OST1:06:37 - A World Where Magic Never Was (Hitoshi Sakimoto) - Crimson Shroud OST1:09:15 - The Middle Layer Area (Hitoshi Sakimoto) - Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter OST 1:34:55 - The Ones Who Obtain Tomorrow (Hitoshi Sakimoto) - Legaia 2: Duel Saga OST1:37:21 - Brat Overflow -Branched- (Hitoshi Sakimoto) - 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim Remix & Arrange Album -The Branched-2:03:50 - Hilary's Bonus Track!Album links for places to buy, stream, and more are available in our post on RPGFan.Get in Touch:RPGFan.comRPGFan ShopEmail us: music@rpgfan.comTwitter: @rpgfancomInstagram: @rpgfancomFacebook: rpgfancomTwitch: rpgfancom

Hailing from the East Bay, Oddity is a sonic storyteller seeking refuge in the intersections of jazz, hip-hop, and neo-soul. With influences ranging from Billy Strayhorn to D'angelo, Oddity can be found wherever inspiration strikes - be it a tender touch on a warm Rhodes, a heavy dilla-style backbeat, or a bluesy trombone melody. Oddity's story is one of resiliency and rebirth, of toeing the precipice of the abyss and returning with an open heart and a present mind. Her experience as a transgender woman of color is inextricably woven into the music: at once an affirmation of life, a tear-streaked lament, a desperate call to action. Join Oddity as she discovers the beauty and cultivates peace by centering love, against all odds. Joey Escobar is a pianist, teacher, composer, and arranger with a degree in music from UC Berkeley. Growing up with 10 siblings, Joey's upbringing gave him a strong appreciation for both community and diversity. His earliest influences were the music of JRPG composers like Nobuo Uematsu, Hitoshi Sakimoto, and Masashi Hamauzu, and the 90s hip-hop sounds, 70s rock, and jazz played in the house by his older siblings and parents. His latest inspirations are the classical music of Bach, Maurice Ravel, and Frederic Chopin, as well as modern geniuses such as Kendrick Lamar, Ambrose Akinmusire, and Esperanza Spalding. He currently lives in El Cerrito and is most known for being the co-composer and pianist with Oddity.
