On this really big Twinkie of an episode, we're covering some of the classic Ghostbusters games, starting with the original 1984 Ghostbusters Business Sim game by Pitfall creator David Crane, Ghostbusters II's questionably fun version of the movie, The New Ghostbusters II game that Japan and Europe got that was surprisingly good and Ghostbusters for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis that was doing its own thing. Plus, we'll give a quick mention to The Real Ghostbusters arcade game. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Our favourite retro consoles often came with an amazing pack-in title. Which ones do you remember? Was it the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis with Altered beast or was it the Sonic the Hedgehog pack? Were you a Nintendo kid who had an NES Action Pack with Zapper to play Duck Hunt or were you busy playing Super Mario? Perhaps you Super Nintendo with the amazing Super Mario World, Street Fighter 2, Starfox or the All Stars pack? Was the original ZX Spectrum under your Christmas tree or maybe the 128k, a Gameboy with Tetris perhaps? Or maybe you were a lucky middle class kid like Chris and you had the Amiga 500 Batman Pack! Or maybe it's a modern games machine like a PS5 or and Xbox.
We expect nothing less than an almighty ton of vitriol from you and the entire retro gaming community! Our Amiga Top 25 went so well we thought we'd do it again with our favourite console and without Tim's "lovely and highly complex algorithm", it could have gone better... But kudos to Adrian for coming up with a (tweaked a bit by Dylan, so let's blame him) way of taking Ade's, Rob's, Tim's, Keith's, Faith's, Chris's and Dylan's top 10 MD/Genesis games and compiling this list. Come cruising through the universe and have lots of fun with us this week as we look back at a hero for all time, Earthworm Jim! If you think about the most popular video games genres of today, you'd probably think First Person Shooters, but back in the 90's when arcades were doing big business the genre you would see everywhere would be side-scrolling beat-em-ups. Games that fell into this genre were "Double Dragon", "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", "Vendetta" and the "Streets of Rage". "Streets of Rage" is considered one of the best of them as well, it was over the top, had multiple characters to choose from with unique abilities and was extremely well animated. The first in the series was actually developed for the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) in 1991 and made it's way onto other big platforms as well. You had three characters to play as Adam Hunter, a boxer, Axel Stone the martial artist and Blaze Fielding a Judo expert, who are out to battle a criminal syndicate that has overrun a once peaceful city. Now skip ahead to 2020 with the recent release of Streets of Rage 4 which is a beautiful continuation of the franchise using more modern techniques. The game is developed by Dotemu and Lizardcube who did the remake of Wonderboy III and Guard Crush Games. The game is available on Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One as well as PC. In fact, you can access the game as part of your Xbox Game Pass on both your console and PC. ABOUT The story takes place 10 years after "Streets of Rage 3" where the evil crime syndicate is back with mastermind "Mr X's" children now running it, "The Y twins". It's time for the old team to get back together to defeat the evil with some extra help from characters like Adams daughter Cherry Hunter and the cybernetically enhanced Floyd Iraia. In fact, there are 17 iconic characters to choose from. The gameplay is a true homage to the original titles but adds a very modern look and feel with hand-drawn stylized animation, the body movement even when idle shows the true attention to detail the team have taken, while in combat the characters move smoothly and have great combos while still maintaining a simple button layout so just about anyone can pick it up and play it, that was always the benefit of this genre of game. MODES The modes include Arcade, which follows the simple rules of limited lives across the levels. Story Mode allows you to pick up from the last stage you played at. Boss Rush and even a Battle Mode which is Player Vs Player. One of the best features of the game is the ability to play over the internet with three other friends, it can get chaotic on the screen, but that's all part of the fun. OVERVIEW Streets of Rage 4 is another masterpiece from the team that brought us the remake of Wonderboy III The Dragons Trap. The use of hand-drawn animation creates a world that feels like an old school 90's cartoon and delivers each punch and kick with absolute precision fun. Seeing the characters back on screen is like meeting up with old friends, it really does take me back to a time where I'd be sitting around the Mega Drive with some buddies arguing over which character we got to play as. There's enough replay value to keep you going well beyond the initial 12 stages so get ready to relive the joy of a genre we just don't see enough of these days and do with one of the best there ever was. It's like a champion returning to reclaim its title. More gaming updates online - www.random30.com.au

Before Hollywood film adaptations, and more reboots than you can shake a Desert Eagle at, [Tomb Raider](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomb_Raider) began life as a trilogy of revolutionary 3D platformers. Its slow, contemplative atmosphere was enhanced at every step by beautiful music from [Nathan McCree](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan_McCree). In this episode, Nathan discusses the audio for Tomb Raider I, II & III, along with some of his earliest work on the Sega Megadrive/Genesis. Nathan is a true legend of VGM, and his recent [Tomb Raider Suite](https://www.tombraidersuite.com/) is proof of his legacy. Before sonic, Altered Beast was the poster boy of the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. We all remember it fondly, sure, but is that enough? The answer is no but the boys behind the sticks explain why. Oh, and we have an exclusive interview with the centurion himself. This podcast is going stratospheric.
Remember how I had a podcast? All joking aside, I'm really, really proud of this one. Please join me in extending a very warm welcome to the wonderful Bob from RetroRGB. Bob has done tireless work gathering information on how to preserve every aspect of classic video games: Not just the systems and the games themselves, but the whole experience of retro gaming. From the best way to hook up your old consoles to a modern flatscreen digital HD TV to the best way to track down and safeguard a CRT to build your own personal arcade, Bob's website RetroRGB is a wellspring of everything you'd ever want to know about the technical side of video game history and preservation. Over the course of an hour and a half, Bob and I share our thoughts on the retro lifestyle, some of our favourite video game memories and talk about what keeps us coming back to the old classics and retro aesthetics year after year. This podcast is a real collaboration between RetroRGB, Eruditorum Press and the Forest of Illusions YouTube Channel. For the first time, I'm doing a proper crosspost: My YouTube viewers will get a video podcast (and, for the first time, get to see me in person), while fans of EP's podcast network get an audio-only version hosted, as always on the Pex Lives Libsyn (if that version isn't up yet when this goes live, it will be in the near future and I'll update the post accordingly). But more to the point, Bob was kind enough to not just guest on my show, but actually do all the technical work recording, mixing and uploading it too. I could not have gotten this out in time today were it not for him, so I wanted to give him an impassioned public thanks here as well. Some liner notes: “In Search of Scanlines”, the Tested.com article that set me down this path. My Life in Gaming on Retro Gaming on CRTs and the Analogue NT Mini FPGA console Bob and Jose Cruz from IFixRetro turn an unwanted consumer CRT TV into an arcade monitor. Do not try this at home. The name of the Japanese poetic structure I was stumbling over is kishōtenketsu. Here's the full poem I was trying to recite from memory, and that I of course butchered horrifically: Daughters of Itoya, in the Honmachi of Osaka. (ki) The elder daughter is sixteen and the younger one is fourteen. (shō) Throughout history, daimyo killed the enemy with bows and arrows. (ten) The daughters of Itoya kill with their eyes. (ketsu) Where to find Bob: The main site is RetroRGB.com. Just to get you started, here are some of my favourite pages: RGB Guide, including an introduction to RGB RGB Monitors Dedicated pages for the NES/Famicom, SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis, SNES/Super Famicom and a breakdown of the various Game Boy model revisions and mods. Bob has a YouTube channel as well, so be sure to subscribe if you want to get caught up on all the latest developments in the field of retro gaming and retro game preservation. Also please consider supporting his Patreon to help keep him going. You can also follow RetroRGB on Facebook and Twitter. You all should know where to find me by now. This show was a blast to make, and I hope you all enjoy it!
The paranormal, the strange and the downright ridiculous call upon the Cash Grab crew in Episode 18! Featuring an analysis of the 1984 movie and it's accompanying Ghostbusters game for the Sega Megadrive (Genesis for you lot across the pond!) Somehow we all get covered in ectoplasm by the end of this podcast... Though we're still not sure if that was a ghostly possession or we all have weak bladders... More importantly though! Is Ghostbusters for the Sega Megadrive a Cash Grab? ************************************************************** Cash Grab is a weekly podcast that looks at different franchises developed into video games and discusses whether they are cash grabs or not! ************************************************************** Intro Music; "Crunk Knight" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/
This week sees Stef, Tom, Adam and Dan all combine their lamp rubbing abilities as well as brushing up on their Agrabian language lessons as they review and analyse Disney's Aladdin, botht he movie and the accompanying hit video game for Sega Megadrive (Genesis)! The real question is whether the young street rat is a creative genius or a cash grabbing monstrosity!

A few weeks ago we asked our listeners what games they would like us to review on the show. A list was made and we pulled 4 of those titles out of a hat. So Matt Wilsher, Mads Kristensen & Dean Swain play and review P.C Fuzz for the Commodore 64, Turtles 2 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Apidya for the Commodore Amiga and finally Road Rash 2 on the Sega Megadrive/Genesis. Will Dean get over his phobia of wasps whilst playing Apidya? Can Matt get his head around frame rate of Road Rash 2 and will Mads confess to recording podcasts whilst naked? All is revealed in episode 148 of Retro Asylum!
Morgan takes Tom through his favourite Sega Mega Drive games from Streets of Rage 2 to Sonic.
This week we head down memory lane in Orlando with George Reid, who talks vintage video game music, fandom, nomadic subjectivities and nostalgia for times and places we've never been. We unabashedly indulge in the comforts of chiptune limitations, and the simple pleasure of limiting music to 4 channels with 1 dedicated to white noise. All original arrangements used in the episode by George himself, and available through his Soundcloud page over at: http://www.soundcloud.com/george-reid they include: https://soundcloud.com/george-reid/enya-orinoco-flow-8-bit-remix https://soundcloud.com/george-reid/reddwarf8bitcover https://soundcloud.com/george-reid/aquarium-fm-chiptune-demo https://soundcloud.com/george-reid/droid-romance We even have a full length bibliography for the show - if you want to do the reading, you can find many of the articles and books we mention at http://www.bansheemedia.com in the notes for the podcast. Also mentioned in the show: Toejam & Earl: Panic on Funkatron. (Sega Megadrive/Genesis). Track: 'Funky Alien' - by John Baker https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOvKL-bX4uA The Chaos Engine. (Commodore Amiga). Track: 'The Forest' - by Richard Joseph https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xtIBdrWsvE
Starting in 1991 with Assault Suits Leynos (AKA Target Earth) on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, the series strove to differentiate itself from its forebears. Previous mecha platformers used the genre as little more than window dressing; a game like UPL's Atomic Robo Kid could easily replace the eponymous Robo Kid with a flying human and not alter its gameplay; But NCS Masaya's games added a believable sense of weight and physics to its character movement that worked to bring the illusion of piloting a giant robot to life with very successful results. Just as the debut of Mobile Suit Gundam would see the "Real Robot" genre overtake "Super Robot" in terms of popularity, Assault Suits arguably brought Hard SF to the platformer medium for the very first time.
