Audiosigma's Podmobile In today's episode, we take a look at the world of podcasting gear! Covering equipment and podcast setups for those just starting out or those looking to upgrade. Mike and Todd talk about microphones, mixers, and video setups to help you achieve great audio (and video) quality without breaking the bank. Plus, at the end of this episode Mike chats with Fernando Pires, the inventor of Audiosigma products, about some exciting innovations in podcasting tech! Today's Hosts: Mike Dell and Todd Cochrane, featuring an interview with guest, Fernando Pires Podcasting gear can be expensive or cheap; your choice depends on how you plan to record your audio (or video). It's much easier to get high-quality audio today than it was back in the day. Microphones The first and most important thing you need as a podcaster is a microphone. Today, there are many options to consider. Here is a list of microphones and approximate cost (lowest to highest) that we recommend: Samson Q2U / Audio Technica ATR 2100 USB/XLR: $50-80 Can use USB or XLR RØDE PodMic USB: $199 Can use USB or XLR Shure MV7+ USB/XLR: $275 Can use USB or XLR Electrovoice RE320 XLR only: $299 Requires an XLR mixer or interface Heil PR40 XLR only: $349 Requires an XLR mixer or interface Shure SM7B XLR only: $399 Requires an XLR mixer or interface Requires a decent pre-amp Electrovoice RE20 XLR only: $450 Requires an XLR mixer or interface Requires a decent pre-amp We emphasize not using condenser mics unless you have a professional recording environment. One suggestion to start with, do not use a condenser mic unless you really know what you are doing and have the right recording environment (quiet and soundproofed). And remember, friends don't let friends podcast with a blue yeti. Mixers and Interfaces You can get a USB interface for XLR mics. Just beware that some of the mics listed require quite a bit of pre-amp to drive them. If you are going to record with more than one person in the room or via zoom or something like that, you will want a bit more than just a USB interface. Choosing the right interface or mixer depends on how many people are involved and your setup. Focusrite Solo - 1 Microphone XLR to USB Focusrite also makes 2 mic interfaces and more Good for simple use of XLR mics on the computer with USB Does not work well with high powered mics without an additional pre-amp like the Cloudlifter or Fethead Mackie (or other) analog mixers You will need an Analog to USB adaptor to work with a computer VERY flexible with mixing in different sources A lot of wires! A bit of a learning curve but still an excellent option for some users Rodecaster - all three models. Rodcaster Pro, Rodcaster Pro II and Rodcaster Duo Full mixer board plus onboard recorder, cart rack, USB interface and more Much simpler to operate Amps are good enough for all mics. No need for an external pre-amp Zoom PodTrak P4 Very portable Simple to use Up to 4 XLR mics Built-in recorder MikeHero DSP by AudioSigma Simple, VERY high quality sound for 1 mic USB interface Works with iPhone, iPad, or computer (likely Android too) Great pre-amp PodMoble DSP by AudioSigma Simple, VERY high quality sound for 2 mics Able to string more together if you need more mics at your location USB interface Works with iPhone, iPad, or computer (likely Android too) Great pre-amp Mike's conversation with Fernando Pires, the inventor of AudioSigma products, dives into his approach to creating simple yet powerful audio solutions for podcasters. Stick around for this insightful discussion at the end of the episode. Video Options for Podcasters: Like audio, video setups can be simple or elaborate. USB Webcams and Older Camcorders with USB out are budget-friendly options.

In this episode, we're thrilled to have Jay Yow on the podcast. Jay is an audio engineer who's journeyed from Malaysia to the United States, chasing his dreams in the world of sound. We're stoked to unpack Jay's story. From his educational start at the School of Audio Engineering in Malaysia to working with top-tier musicians and eventually producing The James Altucher Show, Jay's career is a roadmap for anyone looking to turn their passion into a profession.  Hard Work Meets Opportunity We'll delve into Jay's journey through the traditional hierarchy of New York studios, followed by his transition into voiceover work and eventually into podcasting. Additionally, we'll discuss how he secured opportunities to work with A-list talent, including Rick Ross, DJ Khaled, Mark Cuban, Richard Branson, Benedict Cumberbatch, and more! The overarching theme? When you stick with things and work hard, opportunities will come. Highlights From Jay's Story The Malaysia Foundation: Jay's roots in Malaysia and his early interest in audio set the stage for his journey. His proactive approach to putting in “the work” Florida Man Introduction: Landing in Florida was Jay's first taste of American culture, and it came with its own set of challenges and eye-opening experiences, including the infamous "bath salt incident." Full Sail and the Ultimatum: A relationship ultimatum led Jay to Full Sail University, where he expanded his skills and network. It was a stepping stone, even if the relationship didn't last. New York Studios and the Hierarchy: Jay's time in New York studios like Avatar taught him the hard realities of the traditional studio hierarchy. From intern to general manager, the climb is steep and often thankless. Voiceover Transition: Jay found a new avenue in voiceover work, which eventually led him to work with big names like Benedict Cumberbatch and Mike Myers. It was a shift, but one that paid off. The Quest for Perfect Sound: Jay's relentless pursuit of the perfect sound led him through various equipment setups. His discovery of the SM7B and CloudLifter combo became a game-changer for him. Learning from Mistakes: Jay's early podcasting experiences were far from smooth. From microphone mishaps to learning the nuances of the medium, it was a learning curve that he navigated successfully. The Power of Networking: Whether it was finding a mentor or connecting with industry professionals, Jay's story emphasizes the importance of building a strong network in the audio world. So sit back and tune in as we unpack Jay's incredible journey, filled with ups, downs, and valuable lessons in the world of audio engineering and beyond. Hit Us Up! That's a wrap for this episode! Audacy's Problems Spread to Radio and Podcasting

The Jag Show

I really don't want this to be a podcast where I talk about radio, an industry I left in 2017 after almost 20 years.  But for the second straight week, we've got a radio company who's trying to break podcasting.Last week it was iHeartRadio, and their sketchy practice of buying podcast downloads as ads in video games.  How sketchy was that? Well depends on who you ask.   This week, it's Audacy, formerly Entercom, and CBS Radio before that.  They're the company that saw how badly ClearChannel and iHeart screwed up the radio business, and said, effectively, "Hold my beer."Most radio companies have invested heavily in the digital space, specifically in podcasting.  Audacy is no exception, having purchased Cadence13, and Pineapple Street Media, two leading podcast studios.  Well flash forward to late 2022, and Audacy's stock price is in the crapper, below $1, and facing de-listing from the New York Stock Exchange.  So in a desperate move, they're selling off...you guessed it, Cadence13.  It's the classic "company is in deep trouble, so we need to sell something valuable to save our butts today, future be damned."  Mortgaging the future to save the present.  Now we've seen this before, and it's what happens when companies - radio or otherwise - get too big.  They've got to satisfy bean counters and stock-holders, and they get away from their core missions and what they do well.   That's what happened to ClearChannel when they went public, sold to private equity, declared bankruptcy, and seemingly had layoffs every step along the way.  That's why in a market like Syracuse, New York, there may be more radio stations than live DJ's.The more I think about it, I'm actually kinda glad Audacy is selling off Cadence13.  Maybe it will end up in the hands of someone who can invest in the product, not rob Peter to pay Paul.  Keep screwing up radio, Audacy.  Stay out of podcasting.Onto other podcast news this week.  Kara Swisher is leaving her New York Times podcast and returning exclusively to Vox Media.   But there are reports that the New York Times, who owns all rights to the show, has repurposed her feed to do a new show.   On the surface, it seems like a good idea for marketing and downloads.  Start a show standing on third base, with an already dedicated number of listeners to a certain feed.   Nothing illegal, either.  But what I don't like here is the idea of eroding trust with your audience.   They expect certain content from a show they subscribe to.   Maybe they'll give the NEW content a chance, but I've got to think they'll unsubscribe.  A story to keep an eye on for sure.  The lesson: always be sure who owns your content before you start a show.   For a deeper dive on that, you can check out this months Podcast Superfriends episode, which I cohost.  Link in the show notes. https://www.soundoff.network/show/the-podcast-super-friends/podcast-married/Twitter is rolling out its premium features within Twitter Blue, including podcasts, to Android users.  It had previously been available on just iOS devices.  Personally, it's not enough to get me to pay for Twitter, which I guess differentiates me from Elon Musk. Finally, if you're looking for a higher-end podcast microphone, Logitech has unveiled the Blue Sona Dynamic mic.  It's designed to compete with the microphone I use, the Shure SM7B.  Now the Shure has been used in many radio stations, and by artists from Michael Jackson to Eminem.  I love it.  The Blue Sona is about $50 less ($350 instead of $400), and is designed not to need a signal booster, like a Cloudlifter or a Fethead.  For me, I'm going with the tried and true mic that's been used for 40 years.  Plus, I already have it.  But if you're watching your budget as you build your podcasting setup, the Blue Sona might be worth looking into.  Link in the show notes: https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Blue-Sona-XLR-Microphone/dp/B09MRSQDJ7Finally, I'm not one for shoutouts in my podcast, but do have to give one to my colleague Johnny Peterson, aka Johnny Podcasts. He does what I do, based out of Fort Worth, Texas.  He's getting married this weekend,  and Johnny, looking forward to celebrating with you.  His podcast is called Pod Logic, and that he's a great follow on Twitter at Johnny Podcasts. Until next week, stay healthy and stay safe. We keep the Meet recording in case there is an emergency with the Audacity recording, but otherwise don't use it in the final episode, and I just align and combine our high quality Audacity recordings. On this episode, however, (a first for Ch 2) we lost a portion of Hugues' Audacity recording, so we did have to use our fallback a little bit. At the very bottom of the show notes, I'll include a LONG[ISH] VERSION which explains more. I did everything I could to minimize the impact of the Google Meet recording in the final episode. Then join us again in August on Ch 2 for C2E9: “Just Deserts”. And wherever you are….Fly the N!   -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------   NOTE ON BACKUP [bad] AUDIO - LONG VERSION: When Hugues and I record, we record over Google Meet. But we also each have separate recordings going simultaneously in Audacity to capture just our side of the conversation in higher quality. He uses the same mic for both recordings, a Blue Snowball USB Condenser mic, plus, he is the one hosting the Google Meet session, so the sound quality difference between his Meet recording and Audacity recording is very negligible (though Audacity is still a little bit better). My side of the conversation, though, is where the difference becomes significant. To record my high quality audio in Audacity, I use a RØDE Podmic XLR dynamic mic through a Cloudlifter into a Focusrite 4i4, and then into the computer. Given the flexibility of Linux audio routing (Hugues and I both use Linux, actually), I -CAN- pull double duty with the Podmic as well, and use it for both the Audacity and Google Meet recordings like Hugues does. But I've found that doing so tends to degrade the audio quality of the Audacity recording. And so, I prefer to keep the Podmic and Focusrite discrete for Audacity to keep it as pristine as possible, and then use one my lower-quality mics for the Google Meet. In the case of today's episode, I just used the sludgy, boomy, poorly defined mic that's built right into my very run of the mill webcam. I mean, because hey, it's not gonna matter, right? Nobody's gonna hear the Google Meet audio anyway...right? Well, that presumes that everything goes fine on both of our individual Audacity recordings. And for this episode (a first in the history of Ch 2), we had a couple segments, one really short and insignificant, and one much more significant, where Hugues' side of the Audacity cut out. It just briefly quit recording. So, we had to fallback to the Google Meets recording for those segments. I was able to minimize the impact of those segments by replacing as much of the Google Meets audio for my side of the recording as possible with my Audacity audio, but what I couldn't do was remove the moments where I would "Mhm" etc while Hugues was talking, since to do so would also remove what he was saying. So, I had to leave those in - and that can be pretty jarring. Also, during the portions of these periods where I'm talking, I had to remove all the "Mhms" etc from Hugues because I couldn't include them without including my bad audio in the mix too. Though you don't end up hearing a whole lot of me on the bad audio, the sudden transitions from the boomy, murky "mhms" to the clean, defined high quality audio is pretty jarring - plus, Hugues sounds completely disengaged when I'm talking in those moments when he really wasn't. But it was the best we could do with what we had. So, we made do, and I think it ultimately turned out pretty alright. But I did at least want to acknowledge the issue and confirm I was very much aware of it. By the time I got to the bloopers, I was a little burned out from the granularity of splicing good audio over bad audio and cutting the bad audio back out, and so, I figured that for the bloopers it wouldn't matter, and just left some of the Meet clips alone. I suppose this has the accidental benefit of letting you hear what the Meet recording sounded like. :-)

With podcasting, when you have a good “dynamic” microphone and learn how to use it, you’ll be up close and personal with the person you’re having a conversation with. You’ll experience the person more fully, which makes it easier to “empathize” and BE  WITH the person you’re talking with, resulting in a more meaningful conversation.  I started out the day by outlining a “solo” episode with the topic “Up Close and Personal,” the advantages of good microphone technique, with a good microphone. According to Mainstream Media, Chicago. One of the most often-overlooked details on a live stream is the most important: audio. An audience will stay with you through buffering, frame drops, and low-resolution video feeds, but if your audio drops out, then your audience leaves along with it. This week, we wanted to pry into your genius podcasting minds and find out what some of your favorite gear is. Your answers were all over the map, and super creative as always!    Nicholas and Rob G  from Libsyn are teaming up for a webinar next Week. It's on Wednesday April 22nd at 5pm eastern. You can sign up for that here Now, here are some essential pieces of podcasting gear our audience can't live without:  Carolina Groppa from Life with Caca, a podcast where Carolina speaks with producers from every corner of the entertainment industry, can't live without her Sony noise-canceling headphones. A good pair of noise-canceling headphones have made a world of difference for the sound quality of the podcast, and really help Carolina hear the nuances in each episode.    Sarah Barnes Humphrey from Let's Talk Supply Chain first and foremost can't live without her editor, who trumps all pieces of gear. Aside from her amazing editor, Sarah can't imagine podcasting without her mic flag. Mic flags offer a place for podcasters to display their logo and branding, and it can make your whole operation look extra professional.  Mark Tarnow of Afternoon Coffee with Mike and Tim can't live without his sound-absorbing panels. Mark's son had them custom made from ROCKWOOL over wood frames, and help to make his audio crisp and clean.    Christian Hunt from the Human Risk podcast, a podcast all about human behavior, can't live without his microphone...accessories. Christian uses the RØDE NT-USB, which he has mounted on a boom arm swivel mount, so he can perfectly position his mic whether he is sitting or standing. For Christian, the boom arm is his most needed piece of gear, since it makes podcasting comfortable and convenient.  Rachel from Dating App Disasters, a hilarious podcast about the wild ride of dating apps, can't live without her RØDECaster Pro. The RØDECaster Pro is a tiny, portable podcast studio that can easily go with you wherever you want to podcast. Best of all, it includes tons of awesome features so you can have guests call in, add sound effects, and much more.    Andrew Gelina from the Underserved podcast, which focuses on the Boston technology scene, can't live without his Cloudlifter CL-1 Mic Activator. When Andrew works from home, the Cloudlifter helps to make even make-shift audio set-ups sound professional. It's pretty amazing how many different pieces of gear and equipment exist for podcasting, and even more incredible how creative people can be when creating their own solution! While we got some amazing answers, we know we still have some listeners who are still working to find a setup that works for them. To add to the inspiration, here are three podcast set-ups at three different price points:

It actually depends on what YOU sound like." @thepodcasthost"] Colin’s a Podcaster and Online Educator, and has been teaching Podcasting skills for over 6 years. You can find him over at ThePodcastHost.com. Today on Digital Marketing Radio we discuss audio recording equipment, with topics including: What piece of audio equipment that you have – bang for buck - would you say has had the biggest impact on your sound quality? Should you pick a dynamic mic or a condenser mic for your home studio? What are the concerns that people should have with a dynamic microphone? Why is there not one best microphone for everyone? Why is podcasting different from radio broadcasting? Where should you route your sound after the microphone - is a mixer necessary? What creates sound interference? What is a Cloudlifter device and how does it help your sound recording? Are external soundcards necessary to record interviews? Can you just rely on on the microphone on a portable audio recorder like the Zoom H4N or H5? Is it always important to always do a lot of post production editing? Why can background noise sometimes be good? Why can having a 'series' approach be better for your podcast? Software I couldn't live without What software do you currently use in your business that if someone took away from you, it would significantly impact your marketing success? Audacity [Audio editing software] What software don't you use, but you've heard good things about, and you've intended to try at some point in the near future? All Things [Task management system] My number 1 takeaway What's the single most important step from our discussion that our listeners need to take away and implement in their businesses?
