Today's Broadcast is C1E60, for Theme Thursday, December 23rd, 2021 - our final episode of our very non-standard two-year long “Season 4”. So it is fitting that we'd end such a wildly non-standard season - filled with primarily wildly non-standard content already - with such a dramatically non-standard Channel 1 episode. Today's episode abandons the customary Channel 1 “great big music block” mixtape format for a modified take on the original W.A.R.T. Radio format, featuring Trey Johnson of Nintendomain / W.A.R.T. Radio and St. John. Today's episode is also a “Lost Level”, as it was originally intended to be a Channel F bonus “F-isode” to supplement “C1E40 - Listener Picks - vol. 1” from December 2018, and was intended to release right after it, in a nearly identical presentation to what you receive today. As such, today's broadcast shall be “Listener Picks - vol. 2”. All music, other than the background music for the speaking portions was curated by listeners of the show, and are the roughly 60 remaining unused tracks from the pool of roughly 100 that were offered up for C1E40 in 2018, of which only 40 were used.    p.s. We apologize for the uncharacteristically poor audio quality on St. John's speaking voice. Details available upon request, but the short version is that John had technical difficulties on his end of the recording with "the good mic", but fortunately, we had a lower-quality backup recording on Trey's end over Zoom using St. John's built-in laptop mic. The sound quality is diminished, but the content is still preserved.     Note: All Speaking Portions originally produced in December 2021 by St. John     01: Intro     Timestamps: 00:00:00 - 00:05:18  Runtime: 05:18  Emceed by: Trey and St. John     02: Phillip Vaughn Music Block     Timestamps (Including Introduction): 00:05:18 - NNR Reruns: "Backtracks - The OTHER 50!" (orig rel 04/28/2020)

Editor's Note: There's a very special reason why chose today's episode for this month's rerun. And it's not just because it originally released one year ago today....   ....it's that because of a technical glitch on the podcast feed....you never got to hear it in its entirety.   Here's the story: originally a Channel F "F-isode", and originally released 04/28/2020, it was meant to supplement C1E52: "Backtracks", a focus on VGM that we played in reverse, ostensibly as last year's April Fool's gag. Only, as the intro to today's rerun reveals, it wasn't a gag after all, but instead, we were simply using the occasion of the gag as a cover for a subject too weird for many - if presented as the serious study that it was.   It also had the distinction of being the very first episode I had ever produced in Linux. Other than for the recordings of my voice in the end of 2019 "looking back" pair that we collectively referred to as "The Golden Episode", and most of the voices of my family in C1E51, "the birthday episode", which were all done in the Audio Evolution studio [Android] app in ChromeOS on a cheap old Chromebook, everything I had done up to this point had been done in GarageBand on macOS. I had been wanting to make the jump for some time, and with "The Other 50", I finally took the plunge, using a mix of Audacity, and at that time, Ardour 5 in Ubuntu Studio 19.10 (I've since upgraded to Ardour 6 and Ubuntu Studio 20.04).   I am convinced that Ardour and Audacity allow for better production, by way of cleaner, louder, fuller productions. And I'm much happier working under them than I was using the old methods. But if there's one thing they lack, it's the user-friendliness of GarageBand. And so, little things like start and end timers don't automatically move as you add files sometimes, and I have to remember to manually move them, lest some of the beginning or the end get cut off of the final production.   And that's exactly what happened here. The original draft of the file was missing the final, well, approx 30 minutes of the show. The trouble is, I didn't realize it until AFTER I had already uploaded it to podbean. SO, I went back in, deleted the bad file, and replaced it with the good one. But since the file names were the same, it doesn't appear to have made the swap up on the server, and if you go back to the original episode today, it still cuts off early. At least it does on the iTunes website.    So, the most significant reason for today's rerun is to finally allow you to hear the entire production. If the backwards music drove you nuts, fear not: after today, I don't plan to rerun them again until we get close to April Fool's 2026, which will be a Backtracks sequel. However, if this is the first you're hearing of the Backtracks series, and you like it, definitely scroll back on the feed through the back catalog of episodes, find C1E52 "Backtracks", and give it a listen. On balance, after a year to reflect on it, I really do think the original was better than this supplement. And besides, that outro! Oh my goodness, that Outro!!! Tracklist with timestamps below. Also, here's a link to the an Blogspot post which links to several of the Backtracks series Archive.org-exclusive SUPER BONUSES with additional content:   http://nerdnoiseradio.blogspot.com/2020/04/track-lists-for-backtracks-and-other-50.html?m=1   I hope you will enjoy today's rerun, at long last, presented in its entirety!   Cheers! -----------------------------------------------------------------   Track# – Track Name – Game – System – Composer – From Collection – Original Episode – Timestamp    01) Intro – 00:00:00  02) Options – Daffy Duck in Hollywood – Genesis – Matt Furniss – Best of 2017 – Ep 12 – 00:12:13  03) September 2015 – N/A (eShop) - 3DS / WiiU – Kazumi Totaka – Golden Personal – Ep 6 – 00:16:33  04) The Mall – Skate or Die 2 – NES – Rob Hubbard – Best of 2018 – Ep 22 – 00:19:44  05) Evil Dante – Cratermaze – TG16 - Jun Chikuma, Keita Hoshi, Toshiaki Takimoto, Masaru Takahashi, and/or Takayuki Iwabuchi – Miscellaneous – Ep 47b – 00:21:21  06) Character Select – Cosmic Carnage – 32X – Hikoshi Hashimoto – Best of 2017 – Ep 13 – 00:23:01  07) Ethnic Cave and Flame – X-Men – Arcade – Konami Kukeiha Club – Best of 2017 – Ep 10 – 00:25:06  08) Jazz 3 – Sim Copter – PC – Jerry Martin – Best of 2018 – Ep 35 – 00:27:36  09) Reckless Running – Sega Rally Championship – Saturn – Naofumi Hataya – Best of 2018 – Ep 24 – 00:32:38  10) Collision Chaos Zone (Present) – Sonic CD (US) – Sega CD – Spencer Nilsen w/ David Young and Mark Crew – Best of 2017 – Ep 15 – 00:36:45  11) Main Menu – Sonic Mania – Multiplatform – Tee Lopes – Best of 2018 – Ep 36 – 00:40:02  12) Opening 1 – Hisou Kihei X-Serd – PC Engine – Koji Hayama – Golden Popular – Ep 11 – 00:41:10  13) Brinstar (Red Soil) – Super Metroid – SNES – Kenji Yamamoto and/or Minako Hamano – Miscellaneous – Ep 18 – 00:42:56  14) Stage 3-3 – Ai Chou Aniki – PC Engine – Iwasaki Taku – Miscellaneous – Ep 47b – 00:46:40  15) Options – Bram Stoker’s Dracula – Genesis – Matt Furniss – Best of 2017 – Ep 2 – 00:50:00  16) The Vile Peaks – Final Fantasy XIII – PS3 – Masashi Hamauzu – Best of 2017 – Ep 10 – 00:51:26  17) Twilight Palace (Outside) – L.o.Z.: Twilight Princess – GameCube / Wii – Toru Minegishi and/or Asuka Ota – Best of 2017 – Ep 4 – 00:54:49  18) Outside Ref, The Pyramid of Ice – Dungeon Explorer 2 – PC Engine – Masaaki Inoue and/or Akihiro Honma – Golden Personal – Ep 47b – 00:58:00  19) After the Battle – L.o.Z.: Twilight Princess – GameCube / Wii – Golden Personal – Ep 4 –01:00:05  20) The Vertical – Ghost in the Shell – PS1 – Joey Beltram – Best of 2017 – Ep 16 – 01:02:23  21) Spin on the Bridge – Streets of Rage 2 – Genesis – Yuzo Koshiro and/or Motohiro Kawashima – Best of 2018 – Ep 31 – 01:08:44  22) Cycle 1 – Streets of Rage 3 – Genesis – Motohiro Kawashima and/or Yuzo Koshiro – Best of 2017 – Ep 2 – 01:13:03  23) Track 11 – Illusion Blaze – PC (AdLib) - D.A.C. – Golden Personal – Ep 2 – 01:16:12  24) Naruto (Light Armor) - Cosmic Carnage – 32X – Hikoshi Hashimoto – Golden Popular – Ep 13 –  01:18:45  25) Bases 1 & 2 – Contra NES – c: Kazuki Muaoka / a: Hidenori Maezawa and/or Kiyohiro Sada – Best of 2018 – Ep 34 – 01:20:31  26) Imperial Death March – Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back – NES – c: John Williams / a: Paul Webb – Golden Popular – Ep 9 – 01:22:05  27) Fly Like a Butterfly – Jet Set Radio Future – XBox – Hideki Naganuma – Golden Personal – Ep 20 – 01:22:43  28) At Doom’s Gate – DOOM – PC (Midi) - Bobby Prince – Golden Popular – Ep 35 – 01:25:59  29) Alone in Love – Jewelmaster – Genesis – Motoaki Takenouchi – Golden Popular – Ep 24 – 01:29:13  30) Naja – Cosmic Carnage – 32X – Hikoshi Hashimoto – Best of 2017 – Ep 13 – 01:31:26 31) Swamp – Samurai Ghost – TG16 – Gappy, Miyoshi Okuyama, and/or Hiroyon – Best of 2017 – Ep 20 – 01:33:36  32) Segadore Genesid 64 – N/A (Non-VGM) – N/A (Genesis) – MrSonic699 – Best of 2018 – Ep 28 – 01:34:43  33) Stage Theme 4 – Shinobi – Arcade – Yasuhiro Kawakami – Golden Popular – Ep 2 – 01:36:48  34) Title Theme – Double Dragon – NES – Kazunaka Yamane – Golden Popular – Ep 1 – 01:38:24  35) Field 3 – J.J. and Jeff – TG16 – Takeaki Kunimoto – Miscellaneous – Ep 47b – 01:40:05  36) Zena Lan (Light Armor) – Cosmic Carnage – 32X – Hikoshi Hashimoto – Golden Personal – Ep 13 – 01:42:07  37) Bearhattan Transfur – Fist of Awesome – Multiplatform – Brendan Ratliff – Best of 2018 – Ep 30 – 01:44:22  38) Map – Wolfchild – Genesis – Matt Furniss – Best of 2017 – Ep 12 – 01:47:47  39) Tyr (Heavily Armored) – Cosmic Carnage – 32X – Hikoshi Hashimoto – Golden Personal – Ep 13 – 01:49:03  40) Level 1 – Chip Chan Kick – PCFX – Yoshio Furakawa, Masahara Iwata, and Hitoshi Sakamoto Best of 2017 – Ep 4 – 01:50:46  41) Stage Theme 1 – Spider-Man vs. The Sinister Six – NES – David Whittaker – Golden Popular – Ep 18 – 01:55:13  42) S.O.R. I'm back! Now with a redneck, tricked out Frankenputer latop. But its powered by KDENeon and backedup by Yunohost. It's episode 11 and I got some news, opinions and updates for you right here, right now on The Self Hosted Podcast. Housekeeping My laptop broke. Thats why I've been silent. But I was able to jerry rig it enough that its usable. I'll post pics or you can go see them on Mastodon. I'm using KDENeon and I am loving how easy it is on the ram. It really quick and light. Plus I'm on a newer kernel instead of using a low latency 4.xx on Ubuntu Studio. I may just keep this and be rid of US forever. But I do want to try Manjaro really bad. I used Arch once before but I borked it and decided it was not for me. But I hear nothing but good reviews for Manjaro for the last couple of years now. Plus its what Unfa uses. And if its good enough for Unfa to create the beautiful music he does with it why wouldn't it be good for a podcaster? Some quick stats about you from Anchor. As you know these are only tracked if you are using an app on your mobile or listening to it on Anchors website. If you manually download from the show notes I have no idea who you are or where you are from. As of this recording 603 plays. And there is estimated to be at least 50 of you that listen to me every time I put out an episode. Thank you and I hope you are getting something out of this. 59% of you use Android while only 17% of you use iphone. 24% of you are listed as other so I am guessing that is on the web. I also know that 51% of you are in the US with UK, Germany, Australia and Canda rounding out the top 10. In total this podcast is being listened to in 26 countries around the world. I sincerly thank you and hope that I am inspireing you to get into hosting your own data and taking back control. Yunohost App highlight FreshRss A free, self hostable aggregator I have fallen in love with it. Its clean and easy to read and use. Looks and works good enough on mobile that you dont really need an app. Has two different api's. Greader and Fever News How to avoid being banned by fail2ban forever! So a user by the name of “Mad” over at the Yunohost forums has posted a pretty awesome tip. To be honest I havent tried it out yet but I plan to as soon as I get my laptop situation straightened out. It's a two part solution if I am understanding this. 1. Always allow ssh from another fixed ip address. What this is ssh into a vps and then through that vps you ssh into your Yunohost. So on your Yunohost you need to set fail2ban to always allow a connection from the other vps. Pretty simple and quite interesting concept. 2. But when your not in that specific vps and you need to access your Yunohost. So he has posted a script that uses dyndns so you can do the same thing from home. I'll put it in the shownotes. Aleks noted in the thread that in Yunohost version 3.7 they are increasing the max retry to 10 on fail2ban to help aleviate the problem of there being only 5 attempts allowed currently. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/landp/message

In this episode, I get to meet Erich Eickmeyer Council Chair at Ubuntu Studio. When we recorded our "Rom-Comm Mixtape" release we decided to try an do the whole thing using only open source tools and software. We even got a write up in Forbes because of it. We ended up using a Linux distribution called Ubuntu Studio. We chose it because it's an entire computer operating system that comes preloaded with tons of free software for musicians, artists & filmmakers. I reached out to the Ubuntu Studio Facebook page to see if anyone would be interested in talking about the project on the podcast because I wanted to support them for what they've done.
