At the premier of Saturday Night at The Toronto International Film Festival, Director Jason Reitman made a special point of telling the audience that the sound team "put in a lot of work into making it feel like they didn't do any work at all". This is not the kind of film that you would think would have tricky sound obstacles, but that was not the case at all. Supervising Sound Editors Will Files, Lee Gilmore and David Butler, join production sound mixer Steven Morrow and music editor Chris Newlin to talk about the challenges they faced on this film. Don't miss part 2 of our coverage coming out next, featuring Jon Batiste about how the score was recorded on set during production?! We are back with another Geektown Behind The Scenes Podcast, and this week Dave is chatting with the sound team behind Apple TV+'s epic WW II drama ‘Masters Of The Air' - Supervising Sound Editor, Jack Whittaker, and Re-Recording Mixers Duncan McRae and Michael Minkler.‘Masters Of The Air' stars Austin Butler and Callum Turner, and follows the incredible true story of the 100th Bomb Group, a B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bomber unit in the US Eighth Air Force, based in England during World War II. It is the third series from the creative team behind both ‘Band Of Brothers' and ‘The Pacific'.In the epic drama, Jack's expertise as a Supervising Sound Editor ensures that every auditory detail, from the roar of engines to the subtle nuances of dialogue, contributes to the immersive storytelling experience. He collaborates with Re-Recording Mixers Michael & Duncan, whose mastery lies in blending and enhancing different audio elements, the sound team meticulously crafts a sonic landscape that transports viewers into the heart of World War II aviation.Their work goes beyond mere technicality – it becomes a narrative force. The rumble of engines becomes a heartbeat, the soaring planes echo the bravery of young pilots, and the silence between explosions creates tension that underscores the gravity of their missions. Through their artistry, the sound team adds layers of emotion, suspense, and authenticity, enriching the narrative and ensuring that the audience feels the intensity of the story on a visceral level.Jack Whittaker's previous work includes films such as Marvel's ‘Shang-Chi', Ryan Reynolds ‘Free Guy', and the Oscar-winning short ‘War Is Over!'. Duncan McRae also worked on ‘War Is Over!', along with the films ‘One Night in Miami', ‘Hamilton', and ‘John Wick: Chapter 3'. Michael Minkler's extensive CV includes ‘The Pacific', ‘Elvis' (also starring Austin Butler), Tom Hanks film ‘Greyhound', plus ‘Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood', ‘Mamma Mia!', ‘Dreamgirls', and even goes back to 'Star Wars: A New Hope'.If you've yet to catch ‘Masters Of The Air' the entire series is available now on Apple TV+ worldwide.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Continuing our coverage of the 2024 Academy Awards®, we have another all-star team of sound artists whose work on “Maestro” is nominated in the Best Sound category.Today's panel includes:- Richard King, Sound Designer & Supervising Sound Editor.- Tom Ozanich, Re-recording Mixer.- Dean A. Zupancic, Re-recording Mixer.- Steven Morrow, Production Sound Mixer.“Maestro” is a highly stylized yet intimate film about Leonard Bernstein: his fraught marriage, his affairs, his family, and - of course - his storied career. This gave director Bradley Cooper an amazing opportunity to conduct extensive recreations of some of the composer's famous concerts, all recorded live on set — including that unforgettable concert at Ely Cathedral:“We shot for the first day and, in Bradley's words, he was saying he wasn't really feeling it. He was just nervous about the whole thing. Because it's decades of building up to this moment, in front of the best orchestra in the world, and you're pretending to be the conductor. And the pressure that you're putting on yourself to be perfect and you're just not hitting it. And so he came in the next day and said, ‘let me do it one more time, and let's just do this one shot where the camera goes around… Our film is really just this big wide shot. Let's shoot this shot with a crane. Come all the way around, come back around, by the end of the song, be over Felicia's shoulder, and that's it.' We shot that on the last day, the last take. And that was it. I mean, that was done. As soon as that take was over, everybody knew we had it.”—Steven Morrow, Sound Mixer, “Maestro”Be sure to check out “Maestro,” now streaming on Netflix in Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos®, ahead of the Academy Awards, live from the Dolby Theatre® on March 10th!For more awards season coverage, please subscribe to The Dolby Creator Talks Podcast wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Institute and check out Dolby.com. We have an all-star team of sound artists whose work on “Oppenheimer” is nominated for a 2024 Academy Award®. Rizzo - Re-recording Mixer- Kevin O'Connell - Re-recording Mixer- Willie D. Burton - Production Sound MixerWe discussed how they approached getting inside the head of the brilliant but troubled “Father of the Atomic Bomb,” J. Robert Oppenheimer, as well as working with the brilliant, and very particular director Christopher Nolan, who loves working with IMAX cameras so much, he used some unconventional methods to record the dialogue.“The IMAX camera is very noisy. Usually [Nolan] would do the wide shots with the IMAX camera and then he'll use the 70mm for dialogue. But there's times that we have short scenes — like three, four, five lines. But what we have to do is — he will say, ‘cut, print,' and the actors will re-act that scene, just like they did it on camera. Re-doing it, wild. The same pacing. Oh yeah… We try to get everything we can for post, knowing that he wants to use all his original track on production. Now, whether he totally used it all? [But] I think he used most of it.”—Willie D. Blog Link: https://videogamegrooves.com/2023/06/22/episode-106-kaze-no-notam-notam-of-wind-jet-lancer-mat-ombler Up, up and away, in our beautiful balloon! Luxuriate in the wind, in our beautiful balloon! We are joined by first-time guest cohost Mat Ombler from the GXM Podcast, lover of math rock (or was it numbercore?) to feature some very noticeable and discoverable albums. First, we tap into that balloon-DJ lifestyle with Kaze no NOTAM, also known as NOTAM of Wind. This aeronautic oddity is simultaneously chill and kickin, cerebral and meditative, and it's just not something we expected to exist. We spend some time appreciating Artdink as a studio and as a "Sound Team", which is the only credit offered for this one-of-a-kind soundtrack. The record can still be imported from Japan, but is it worth the trouble? Next, we climb into the cockpit of Jet Lancer, a "Luftrauser-like" which adopts a sound that's far different from the Robotech-esque looking style and jetting gameplay. Mat shows us an example of how the game's mathy sounds can either get our toes tapping or emotionally drain us with sheer brute force. St. Louis duo Fat Bard works overtime to give us the best of what math nerds demand. We cover recent releases and offer our opinions on their relative worth (links below) and in our final segment we discuss whether vinyl is actually a good medium for discovery of music, or whether it always has to follow a noticeable moment on a digital playlist.  I better get this episode out pretty quick. Since I released Ep49 the other day. But who's counting anyways. This is actually the first of three episodes about Sound Team, Sound Techs, Soundboard life, being Sound Bored ;)Our verse is Psalm 100 and Romans 12:1&2 talking about a Joyful noise with gladness, thanksgiving, and praise. While presenting ourselves and how we serve as a living sacrifice "holy and acceptable". We talk about a Spicy Worship Burrito, two recently released hardcore bands "HolyName" with my friend Tommy Green from Sleeping  Giant and then the other band is "Project 86". Both have some epic new releases that you must go have a listen to. Our conversation is about serving in the church, maybe not feeling very qualified to serve there but willing to learn and find an opportunity to worship while you serve. So though we are talking about our sound teams this kind of attitude isn't exclusive to this area; you can find it in all areas of your church ministries. You might be asking yourself if there is any random nonsense about this episode and you are right, this seems to be more serious than other episodes we usually do. I hate to disappoint but I'm even disappointed in the level of banter this time. But that doesn't take away from what we do talk about. We also talk about #mostlyworship #firstservicewarmup #papercuts #beingsomewhatcapableoratleastwillingThanks for joining in on the conversation. We hope you enjoy this time together. I promise, going forward, we will make sure we turn our banter to 11 as we have done so many time before. But I'm crossing my fingers that somewhere in this Sound Boredom you might find some little bytes of smrtness. Don't forget to remember to tell a friend about us, give us a review or at least throw us some stars, this all helps others find us. Thank you for supporting us. BlessingsSupport the show

The incredible new adaptation of "Dune," from director Denis Villeneuve, has some astonishing sound work, fully embracing the immersive capabilities of Dolby Atmos®. Creating this soundtrack was a long and painstaking process, which began in pre-production, as Denis took a novel approach by bringing his sound team and composer on board very early in the process. This gave them extra time and creative freedom to unlock some truly next-level artistry on this film. We recently sat down with Denis and his all-star sound team of Mark Mangini, Theo Green, and Ron Bartlett, to discuss this and their approach to this very ambitious project.  "[A]t the end of the day, you're not mixing sound, you're mixing an image. It's storytelling. And everything that pulls you away from the screen is bad for me. But with the sound of Atmos, what I like is that I just have the impression that I'm diving INTO the image." — Denis Villeneuve, Director, "Dune" In the US, https://www.dunemovie.com/ ("Dune" is available to watch in a Dolby Cinema near you and on HBO Max). Hello World! This episode of the Let's Talk ... Audio podcast was recorded just before Austin, TX's first Corona Shutdown in Spring 2020. Alena Lecorchick is a foley artist, sound designer, and sound editor for the Sound Team of Rooster Teeth's Animation Department since 2016. Previously, she graduated from University of North Texas in Denton, north of the DFW metroplex. Alena interned and then freelanced for the Dallas Audio Post. She later freelanced for the educational game company Istation, before coming to Austin. We met because she was on a panel at an Audio Engineering Society event in Austin. Beginning this conversation, we visit a bit about Texas weather and Austin driving culture. To get into the meat of the interview, I ask her what the nuances are among the jobs of foley, sound design, editing, and mixing, in the context of film. Next she takes us through what workflow is like for a Rooster Teeth show such as Camp Camp or RWBY.  We also discussed the SXSW cancellation before moving on to the subject of job hunting. She shares some of her experience looking at sound engineer applicant resumes at Rooster Teeth. We also discuss reels, cover letters, and redesigns. Alena shares with us how she has studied genre with regards to sound design. For instance she used My Little Pony and Ed, Edd, and Eddy for reference when she was working on RWBY Chibis for Rooster Teeth. Alena adds that Invader Zim is a great study to think about building uncomfortable moods. She also shares with us some of the genius of Better Call Saul. Before leaving us, Alena gives an example of one of her favorite foley accomplishments for the final episodes of RWBY. Alena's IMDB is here: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4552923/ (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4552923/) and she can be found on Twitter @AlenaLecorchick And as usual, Please Like, Share, Subscribe, Review, and all the fun stuff! + you can find Tangela on IG @beatsinabottle and @letstalkaudio, as well as her website http://beatsinabottle.com/ (beatsinabottle.com)

The Skywalker Sound sound team behind the documentary In Pursuit of Silence - A Documentary Film recently discussed their approach for creating a dynamic mix and creative sound design to a film about silence. Featuring sound designer & supervising sound editor Steve Bissinger, re-recording mixer & additional effects editor Zach Martin and dialogue editor Shaun Farley. Moderator: Michael Coleman of Soundworks Collection In Pursuit of Silence (www.pursuitofsilence.com) is a fascinating and meditative film and exploration of silence and the impact of noise on our lives. Filmed in eight countries, it immerses us in a cinematic journey around the globe—from a traditional tea ceremony in Kyoto, to the streets of Mumbai, the loudest city on the planet—and inspires us to both experience silence and celebrate the wonders of our world. Other highlights include filming in the anechoic chamber at Orfield Labs in Minneapolis (the “Quietest Place on Earth”), Alaska’s Denali Memorial Park and Trappist and Zen monasteries, as the filmmakers distill our experience of the world and challenge us to see it anew.

Birdmonster entered bloggers' and critics' consciousness in October of last year on the strength of a self-released EP that, with its brash Springsteen-meets-Fugazi aesthetic, opened doors to high profile supporting slots with the likes of Art Brut, Sound Team, Catfish Haven, and Division Day, not to mention the type of buzz that forces Pitchfork to wallow in its limitations as a credible source for anything. The San Francisco quartet's storied live shows and unique D.I.Y. sensibility very much paved that road, but, as they revealed last month on an eerie Dallas night, Birdmonster's true ambitions are focused on the songs and an ever-growing sonic palette. This week, Birdmonster's Peter Arcuni and David Klein sit down to discuss their just-released debut long player, No Midnight, and how the experience of communicating their live energy on that record whet the band's appetite to develop their studio sound and the burgeoning songwriting methodologies that will shape their sophomore effort. The Birdmonster Beauty Bar photo and more by Chad Wadsworth.Mp3: Birdmonster - "'Cause You Can"Mp3: IndieInterviews podcast
