The Cars' self-titled 1978 debut record changed the world of power pop forever. Guitarist and co-vocalist Ric Ocasek penned all the tunes, but lead guitarist Elliott Easton transformed them with his tasteful 6-string stylings. This time on Shred With Shifty, Easton sits down with Chris Shiflett to show him how to play the solo from “My Best Friend's Girl.” Born in Brooklyn before winding up in Long Island, Easton washed dishes to save up for his first 1971 Fender Telecaster, and after high school he studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he picked up key theory and technique that he still holds dear. Reared on country and rockabilly players like Roy Buchanan, Jesse Ed Davis, Gram Parsons, James Burton, and Roy Nichols, Easton brought a slick twang to Ocasek's new-wave gems. Easton tells Shifty how the band came to work with producer Roy Thomas Baker in London, while crashing at a label-provided mansion nearby and driving a loaned Jaguar and Land Rover to the sessions. Easton's celebrated leads didn't take long to come together. “On my mother's memory, I did all my guitar parts in a day and a half,” he says. All he had with him was a 1978 or '77 Telecaster with a Bartolini Firebird-style mini humbucker in it, a red Les Paul, a Martin acoustic, and two effects: the brand-new Boss CE-1 and a Morley EVO-1 Echo Volume pedal. His amp of choice in those days? An Ampeg VT-22 or VT-40. After running down his giddy-up guitar parts from “Best Friend's Girl,” Easton talks about which modern players impress him, why he doesn't consider himself a shredder, and the experience of working with Mutt Lange: “I spent as much time tuning with him as playing!” If you're able to help, here are some charities aimed at assisting musicians affected by the fires in L.A: https://guitarcenterfoundation.org https://www.cciarts.org/relief.html https://www.musiciansfoundation.org https://fireaidla.org https://www.musicares.org https://www.sweetrelief.org Full Video Episodes: http://volume.com/shifty Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/podcast/id1690423642 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4B8BSR0l78qwUKJ5gOGIWb iHeart: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-shred-with-shifty-116270551/ Pandora: https://www.pandora.com/podcast/shred-with-shifty/PC:1001071314 Follow Chris Shiflett: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/chrisshiflettmusic Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shifty71 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@chris.shiflett Twitter: https://twitter.com/chrisshiflett71 Website: http://www.chrisshiflettmusic.com Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5tv5SsSRqR7uLtpKZgcRrg?si=26kWS1v2RYaE4sS7KnHpag Producer: Jason Shadrick Executive Producers: Brady Sadler and Jake Brennan for Double Elvis Engineering support by Matt Tahaney and Matt Beaudion Video Editor: Addison Sauvan Graphic Design: Megan Pralle Special thanks to Jon Romeo, Michelle Yoon, Chris Peterson, Greg Nacron, and the entire Volume.com crew.

Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Religious Lectionary: 207The Saint of the day is Saint Elizabeth Ann SetonSaint Elizabeth Ann Seton's Story Mother Seton is one of the keystones of the American Catholic Church. She founded the first American religious community for women, the Sisters of Charity. She opened the first American parish school and established the first American Catholic orphanage. All this she did in the span of 46 years while raising her five children. Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton is a true daughter of the American Revolution, born August 28, 1774, just two years before the Declaration of Independence. By birth and marriage, she was linked to the first families of New York and enjoyed the fruits of high society. Reared a staunch Episcopalian, she learned the value of prayer, Scripture and a nightly examination of conscience. Her father, Dr. Richard Bayley, did not have much use for churches but was a great humanitarian, teaching his daughter to love and serve others. The early deaths of her mother in 1777 and her baby sister in 1778 gave Elizabeth a feel for eternity and the temporariness of the pilgrim life on earth. Far from being brooding and sullen, she faced each new “holocaust,” as she put it, with hopeful cheerfulness. At 19, Elizabeth was the belle of New York and married a handsome, wealthy businessman, William Magee Seton. They had five children before his business failed and he died of tuberculosis. At 30, Elizabeth was widowed and penniless, with five small children to support. While in Italy with her dying husband, Elizabeth witnessed Catholicity in action through family friends. Three basic points led her to become a Catholic: belief in the Real Presence, devotion to the Blessed Mother and conviction that the Catholic Church led back to the apostles and to Christ. Many of her family and friends rejected her when she became a Catholic in March 1805. To support her children, she opened a school in Baltimore. From the beginning, her group followed the lines of a religious community, which was officially founded in 1809. The thousand or more letters of Mother Seton reveal the development of her spiritual life from ordinary goodness to heroic sanctity. She suffered great trials of sickness, misunderstanding, the death of loved ones (her husband and two young daughters) and the heartache of a wayward son. She died January 4, 1821, and became the first American-born citizen to be beatified (1963) and then canonized (1975). She is buried in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Reflection Elizabeth Ann Seton had no extraordinary gifts. She was not a mystic or stigmatic. She did not prophesy or speak in tongues. She had two great devotions: abandonment to the will of God and an ardent love for the Blessed Sacrament. She wrote to a friend, Julia Scott, that she would prefer to exchange the world for a “cave or a desert.” “But God has given me a great deal to do, and I have always and hope always to prefer his will to every wish of my own.” Her brand of sanctity is open to everyone if we love God and do his will. Break out your glass, steel, or beer bottle: This time on Shred With Shifty, we're sliding into glory with southern-rock great Derek Trucks, leader of the Derek Trucks Band, co-leader (along with wife Susan Tedeschi) of the Tedeschi Trucks Band, and, from 1999 to 2014, member of the Allman Brothers Band. Reared in Jacksonville, Florida, Trucks was born into rock 'n' roll: His uncle, Butch Trucks, was a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, and from the time he was nine years old, Derek was playing and touring with blues and rock royalty, from Buddy Guy to Bob Dylan. Early on, he established himself as a prodigy on slide guitar, and in this interview from backstage in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Trucks explains why he's always stuck with his trusty Gibson SGs, and how he sets them up for both slide and regular playing. (He also details his custom string gauges.) Trucks analyzes and demonstrates his subtle but scorching solo on “Midnight in Harlem,” off of Tedeschi Trucks Band's acclaimed 2011 record, Revelator. In it, he highlights the influence of Indian classical music, and particularly sarod player Ali Akbar Khan, on his own playing. The lead is “melodic but with Indian-classical inflections,” flourishes that Trucks says are integral to his playing: It's a jazz and jam-band mentality of “dangling your feet over the edge of the cliff,” says Trucks, and going outside whatever mode you're playing in. Throughout the episode, Trucks details his live and studio set ups (“As direct as I can get it”), shares advice for learning slide and why he never uses a pick, and ponders what the future holds for collaborations with Warren Haynes. Rick Bass delivers these essays—old and new—at a deliberate pace and a careful tempo. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Alan Minskoff discuss his voice and delivery, which sound kindly and literary. Reared in Texas, Bass retains a slight twang, and he is soulful, sincere, and aspirational. A fiction writer and essayist, he is also an environmental activist, and a number of these texts center on the horrific aftermath—asbestosis and mesothelioma—of the mining that took place near his adopted home in the Yak Valley of Montana. One of the more tragic ways we misunderstand the Divine is in projecting our experience of harmful parents onto Them. Creator thus becomes the parent that beats us "out of love", parents us through punishment, and more. It leads to profound attachment insecurity, horrible parenting skills, and tasteless relationships to suffering.Translators have had a hand in this: translating "discipline" instead of childrearing," "punishes" instead of "corrects," and more. Making better sense of the text then hides in a jungle of mealy-mouthed religious phrases ("shared in his holiness") that at best are confusing, but more alarmingly can reinforce a hierarchal, purity, punishment religion.Let's try it another way....Translation (Google Doc): https://bit.ly/FIT-Hebrews-GDocTranslation (PDF): https://bit.ly/FIT-Hebrews-PDFMobile-Friendly with endnotes: https://bit.ly/FIT-Hebrews-MobilePDJoin the community: https://donorbox.org/found-in-translation-1...Opportunity Walks by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/...#bible #Christian #theology #hebrews #religion #spirituality #justice #bibletranslation #liberation

Actor, director, and showrunner Bill Hader (BARRY, INSIDE OUT, THE SKELETON TWINS) joins Team Deakins to discuss his multi-faceted career in one of our funnier conversations. Reared in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Bill describes how he first rode into town despite an early setback being rejected from film school for being “too entertaining.” We later drive down memory lane as Bill recounts several exciting but terrifying stories of PA'ing on low-budget films around LA—stops include a seven camera setup (all pointed at a map), watching us wrap early on THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE (with envy), and learning what a controlled burn is (and maybe isn't). Bill also shares his experience co-showrunning BARRY with Alec Berg, a discussion ranging in topics from “what is a tone meeting?” to which takes actor Henry Winkler consistently nails his performance. At the end, Bill discusses his post-BARRY aspirations and the longevity of classic films that, despite their imperfections, stand tall today on the merits of their craft. - This episode is sponsored by Dallas Film Commission Instagram: @dallasfilmcommission

#SOULutionForMenPodcast #SOULutions #TuckProjectTerrance "Tuck" TuckerContrary to popular belief, true progress should not be measured by the number of points scored or trophies won. Instead, its measure should come from the perseverance and grit that one uses to dismantle the odds against them, and fight on when others cannot see the warrior within them. For Terrance “Tuck” Tucker, evening out the odds was more than a mission for himself, but for boys ages 9-19, he would one day commit to serving for the rest of his life. Reared in Columbia, SC, Terrance grew up in the heart of an area that many would call, “the rough side of the city”. Always knowing that he and the youth from his neighborhood were more than a bad reflection of the zip code they lived in, he vowed early on to change the narrative. Growing up with a natural niche for athletics, Terrance breezed through his grade school years as an athlete, and later a quarterback for his high school. Like many young men charmed by sports and enjoying their youth, academics for Terrance took precedence over areas of his education. Unbeknownst to many, he was struggling in school and had a speech impediment that he hid. Even when he grew out of his insecurities and became more vocal, “coolness” allowed his weak areas to go unnoticed and ultimately underserved.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/soulutionsformen/exclusive-content
We often think of Cartel violence to be strictly something that occurs in Mexico but that is not the case. There are many, many examples of cartel violence spilling over into America and in today's episode we see it once again. Join us in this episode for a radiant musical memoir by pianist Dick Coolen. Long before the city's reputation as an international tech hub, Seattle achieved a globally relevant jazz culture. Here, bands who gathered in the basements of churches, schools and modest homes produced the likes of Ray Charles, Ernestine Anderson and Quincy Jones. Reared in this milieu, our guest's stories celebrate a free-range childhood in Seattle's redlined Central District as well as the big band, bebop, and early rock and roll rhythms that filled its avenues. Dick recounts jamming at Joe Brazil's Black Academy of Music; of blowing baritone sax at Birdland on Madison. He savors memories of touring with Ike Cole and of collaborating with Dizzy Gillespie; of backing underground drag shows with showtunes; and of visits to a well-regarded violin maker at the Fischer Studio Building. Over the course of his jazz journey which eventually brought him to Port Orchard, Dick footed the family bills by working no fewer than 44 non-musical occupations—from paperboy to firefighter to brick mason. Dick Coolen's humility and commitment—qualities he attributes to his working class and Roman Catholic upbringing—offer lessons from an inspired life grounded in community and refined through the lifegiving power of music. "And that's what life is….They throw you (♪ short musical phrase ♪). And you say, ‘What can I do with that?' And you can make it (♪ extended musical phrase ♪)….And it comes out right." ~Dick Coolen This episode is dedicated to the memory of Jamie Winshall and to the continued success of his son Daniel.

Eddie Brown. Saving families one Car at a time. In this episode of Nonprofit Architect, Travis talks with Eddie Brown, the founder of the non-profit Giving Words. With an entrepreneur's vision and a servant's heart, Eddie Brown, along with his wife, started the non-profit Giving Words to help struggling single mothers address the ongoing trials of family management. Eddie has 23 years of experience in the housing industry and 9 years of experience as a business owner. He has a uniquely developed skill to design, organize, and market the ministry. Eddie created a network of over 60 partners in the central Virginia area to assist moms in various areas of needs such as car repair and gifting, home maintenance, counseling, budgeting, and appliance repair. Additionally, Eddie with the assistance of Apricot software designed a tailored system that can track all mothers, services, activities, and volunteers. This program lays the foundation for our non-profit's ability to be replicated in every county, state, or even in another country. Conversation Highlights: {00:57} Eddie gives a taste of what Giving Words is all about. {03:26} Partnering with the local High School and repair shops. {04:52} How to make the approach to a potential partner? {08:15} Where the name Giving Hands came from. {11:58} How to use “giving Tuesday”. {14:21} Non-Profit at Christmas. {15:27} What does a structure run by volunteer teams look like? {19:56} How can the listener get involved with Giving Words? {27:14} Getting participants involved with #momstorymonday eddieb@givingwordsva.org www.givingwordsva.org Remarkable quotes: You're teaching the skills in high school and they're connecting with the story of the person in need of the help, and everyone is growing. It's a process, and when you work through that process and break it down, it touches multiple areas. We've usually had two to three seniors and juniors in this process, and that's the character shift. And we've had instances where we've had a mom that had court and she didn't have any clothes for court. So she went to the shop and got shoes, pants, a dress shirt, the full outfit that she needed for the court to look presentable. If you had 100 people giving $10 a month, that turns into $12,000 Resources: Eddie Brown eddieb@givingwordsva.org www.givingwordsva.org https://www.facebook.com/givingwordsva/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/eddie-brown-9a6a7820/ https://www.instagram.com/givingwordsva/ Bio: With an entrepreneur's vision and a servant's heart, Eddie Brown, along with his wife, started the non-profit Giving Words to help struggling single mothers address the ongoing trials of family management. Reared by compassionate parents and mentored by selfless neighbors like a local foster mother who cared for drug-addicted babies, Eddie realized before adulthood that he should actively care for the most vulnerable. Later in adulthood after a divorce and losing custody of his children temporarily, this calling magnified. Later, Eddie became a stepfather, then the primary caregiver of his elderly aunt, and four years ago, the custodial guardian of his infant granddaughter. Each of these experiences prepared him to identify and empathize with the overwhelming load of single parenting and to offer support and solutions to common problems that can derail the family.
