On this episode of Food Heals, we're diving into two powerful ways to elevate your health—sprouts and CBD coffee! First, I've got updates from Tulum, Mexico. Sometimes, the best way to solve a problem is to step away, even if just temporarily, to gain a fresh perspective. Travel is healing for me, and being here in Tulum, surrounded by nature, vegan food, and a holistic community, has been exactly what I needed. I've been indulging in delicious plant-based meals, including the best whipped coffee at Liefs, working out with friends, and soaking in the healing energy of this paradise. But before we dive into today's powerful conversations about the incredible nutritional benefits of sprouts and the calming ritual of CBD coffee, I want to touch on something important—the impact of air pollution and what we can do to protect ourselves. The recent LA fires have left behind toxic air filled with chemicals from burned plastics, electronics, and building materials, and we need to take proactive steps to safeguard our health. From air filtration to immune-boosting greens, I'll be sharing my top tips to help you detox and stay well. Then, we're diving into two powerful ways to elevate your health—sprouts and CBD coffee! First, I'm sitting down with Doug Evans, a pioneer in the plant-based health movement and author of The Sprout Book, to explore the mind-blowing benefits of sprouts. These tiny nutritional powerhouses can help regulate insulin, improve digestion, and even protect against environmental toxins. We recorded this episode live at Leslie Durso's house in Marina del Rey, so of course, I had to bring her back to co-host! Leslie Durso, a celebrity vegan chef and wellness expert, is known for making plant-based living stylish, accessible, and delicious. Then, in part two, I'm chatting with Lindsey Sozio, founder of Lavender Coffee Boutique, a Denver-based coffee shop and online retailer redefining how we experience coffee. Lindsey is on a mission to shift away from the fast-paced coffee culture and turn your morning cup into a mindful wellness ritual—whether you take it with or without CBD. Thank You to Our Sponsors! If you're surprised and frustrated by high prices at the grocery store, you are not alone. National data shows that grocery shopping and dining out are more expensive than ever. The latest data from the Agriculture Department shows consumers spent 11.3% of their disposable income on food in 2022. This means that Americans are currently spending more on food than they have in over 30 years. I'm certainly seeing this in my own life. I've just returned from a trip to Tulum, and don't worry, I'll be sharing more about that journey on my podcast soon. Tacos that used to be $5 are now $15; a veggie burger that used to be $8 is now $18. But what can we do about this? Well, personally, I feel it's my mission to make sure that no matter the cost of food, we all still feel empowered and inspired to make healthy choices and to not let this inflation deter us from our health goals. So today, I have rounded up the best experts on saving money while eating well. First up is Kathy Davis, the CEO of VegInspired. She'll be discussing how to eat healthy on a budget, her personal experience losing 30 pounds when she went plant-based, tips on food prep, and advice on when to buy in bulk. Then we've got Food Heals regular and Vegan Chef to the stars, Leslie Durso, here to talk about how to cook plant-based on a budget for yourself, eat seasonally to save money, and the secret ingredient that saves you money and enhances the flavors of your food. Next up is Founder of Vegan Dinner Club, formerly known as Batch Cooking Club, Stephanie Dreyer, who helps busy parents bring more ease to their meal prep and meal times. She's here to discuss Meal Planning, family recipes, batch cooking, plus her favorite healthy swaps. Next, we'll be speaking with Toni Okamoto, author of Plant-Based on a Budget: Delicious Vegan Recipes for Under $30 a Week. She'll be sharing insights on saving time and money in the kitchen, meal planning, buying in bulk, growing your own food, and more. And finally, we've got Whitney Lauritsen sharing the best apps, websites, and resources to thrive on a vegan diet.

Current medical wisdom advises that anyone suffering from diabetes or prediabetes should eat a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet. But today's guests, Dr. Neal Barnard, Cyrus Khambatta, PhD, and Robby Barbaro, MPH, rely on a century of research to show that advice is misguided. While it may improve short-term blood glucose control, this type of diet also increases the long-term risk for chronic diseases like cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, chronic kidney disease, and fatty liver disease. The revolutionary solution is to eat a low-fat plant-based whole-food diet, the most powerful way to reverse insulin resistance in all types of diabetes: type 1, type 1.5, type 2, prediabetes, and gestational diabetes. First up, Chef Leslie Durso and I talk to Dr. Neal Barnard, author of Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes: The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes without Drugs. In this interview, he shares why he got into preventative medicine and diabetes research, and the cutting edge solutions to reversing it naturally with a plant-based diet. Then, Suzy and I sat down with Cyrus Khambatta, PhD, and Robby Barbaro, MPH authors of Mastering Diabetes: The Revolutionary Method to Reverse Insulin Resistance Permanently in Type 1, Type 1.5, Type 2, Prediabetes, and Gestational Diabetes. They are here to discuss their step-by-step plan that has been proven to reverse insulin resistance-the root cause of blood glucose variability- while improving overall health and maximizing life expectancy. Stephanis was gutted. “Online now - DM me” is what her boyfriend’s Match.com profile said. The man she was living with, the man that she talked about marriage and family with - was on the prowl. Not only that, but the profile said that he had just broken up with his girlfriend. It said she was not “the one”. Shocked and heart-broken, Stephanie packed her things and moved out, but not before making an important observation. This was the fourth man who had cheated on her. The common denominator? Her. Why did she continually attract men into her life who wound up being unfaithful? Was it because she wasn’t showing herself the unconditional love that she craved? A light switch went off and Stephanie went on a mission of seeking the truth, cultivating self-love practices, and learning how to rewire her subconscious mind to attract the things and people she truly wanted (and deserved) into her life. Can you relate? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live your life as a master of your mind and energy? What if you could manifest true love, happiness, and success in all areas of your life? What if you could become the best version of yourself possible? Every day, Stephanie is helping more and more people do this very thing. Through her innovative techniques as a Rewiring Coach, Hypnotherapist, NLP Practitioner, Breathwork Facilitator, and Host of the Rise Higher Podcast, Stephanie helps people just like you break through the invisible inner barriers holding them back from reaching their goals. A vegan chef and wellness expert, Leslie is the glowing face of a fresher plant-based movement that refuses to compromise style for sustainability. Walking the plant-based talk since age eight, this Southern California native has always been well ahead of the times with her meatless mindset. She works as a consulting chef for hotels, resorts, and restaurants around the world and is currently the vegan chef at the Four Seasons, Punta Mita, Mexico. But before she was a chef and wellness expert, Leslie was once simply known as Leslie the lab girl with Bill Nye the science guy. To pivot from acting, Leslie took her love of education and shifted to plant based food. After establishing herself as a private chef for the NYC and Hollywood elite, Leslie emerged as a public persona, hosting cooking segments on television and online. Determined to inspire beneficial life-long eating habits for everyone, her show Accidentally Vegan can be seen on FABFITFUNTV and she regularly appears on The Doctors, Food Network, Discovery Channel, Hallmark Channel. She has written for VegNews, CNN.com, Redbook, Glamour, and more, evangelizing the benefits of a mindful lifestyle, delivered with her trademark blend of sunshiney sophistication and girl-next-door relatability. Picture this. A gorgeous villa built into the cliffside, surrounded by an organic farm, with an infinity pool overlooking the sea; the picturesque Italian village of Ravello, the most vegan-friendly town in Italy, with its cobbled streets, authentic restaurants and independent shops. In this perfect setting, a group of women came together to connect, learn from each other, and savor a week of total plant-based relaxation. Meet the ladies: Leslie Durso - international vegan chef, working with the Four Seasons to veganize hotels all over the world. Her favorite part - going barefoot into the garden and picking food to make dinner. The super glamorous lifestyle. Swimming in private coves. Follow her on Instagram @lesliedurso. Ella Magers - founder of Sexy Fit Vegan and creator of the 6-month plant empowered coaching program. Her favorite part of the trip? Being in a gorgeous setting where the food you eat has been picked from the garden that day. Learning about the olive oil. The locals being so friendly and inviting. Follow her @sexyfitvegan. Coriann Bright - owner of Bright Living, she creates sacred spaces by combining energy healing and interior design. She loved eating divinely well while traveling, and finding so many new places that embrace vegan cuisine. But the highlight was taking the boat out to the seaside restaurant, swimming out to the caves as a group, and being in goddess energy. Oh, and words cannot express the joy of shopping in Ravello. Ashley Fillingim - an attorney who represents wellness entrepreneurs. She loved our first Italian Getaway retreat so much she came back this year. She couldn’t pick a favorite thing. The place just calls to her. The peace and simplicity, alongside the explosion of light and color is what keeps bringing her back. Learning how to live simply and elegantly. Connecting with empowered, fun, intelligent women, sharing stories and being supportive. Follow her on Instagram @kickashlife. Jill Tomback - Alli’s longtime friend and a teacher. Check out episodes 26, 27 and 28 for her healing story! This retreat was the first time she landed in Europe and she was beyond blown away. The lemons, the food, the people, the artistry that goes into everything that’s made, the lack of mass production… but mostly, the healthy environment. Check her out on Instagram @jillctomback. Susmitha Subbaraju - a vegan restauranteur (Carrots, the first vegan restaurant in India!), light worker, spiritual entrepreneur and jeweler from India. A year ago, she stumbled on the Spiritual Boss Babes episode, and it resonated so much she knew she had to meet Leslie and Alli. It was connections that brought her to the retreat. Women being there for each other and lifting each other up. Check her out on Instagram @veganosaurus and @carrotsrestaurant Cynthia Bomaster - a physical therapist specializing in orthopedic rehabilitation. She’s loved getting to know everyone on this retreat. Each woman is so powerful and inspiring in their own right, has been so accepting, inclusive and open. It’s been wonderful to make new friends! Loved the community set up that encourages being physical active every day. Follow her on Instagram @simplylivefully. Alli - the greatest thing about coming to Ravello again this year? Experiencing new places and foods. Like the vegan cheesecake (culinary art!). Loving the combination of being on vacation and eating the healthiest, tastiest foods. No, not just lettuce - eating the most divine, gorgeous dishes. And of course, the wine. You can indulge AND still be healthy. When someone is diagnosed with cancer, it feels like the end of the world. But it doesn’t have to be. Our guests didn’t just overcome cancer naturally, they used it as a platform from which to be a voice for positive change. Pretty powerful stuff! Amanda Deming - Healing cervical cancer - Episode 8 Cervical cancer killed nearly 4,000 women last year. It’s the second most common cancer among women. Conventional treatments, like surgery, chemo and radiation, aren’t just poisonous, they often lead to infertility. When Amanda was diagnosed with cervical cancer, she was determined not to go down that road. Instead, she chose a raw vegan diet, meditation, and yoga. She’s now cancer-free. Jeff Witzeman - Cancer can be killed - Episode 190 When Jeff’s wife was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bladder cancer, she was told her life would change forever: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, a life without an essential organ. Instead of taking the doctor’s word for it, they travelled to Germany to treat the cancer to a spa. Thanks to juicing, a plant-based diet, hyperthermia (targeted heat therapy), oxygen therapy, intravenous vitamins, and colonics, she was completely cancer-free in just one month. Tracey Edmonds - The truth about healing cancer - Episode 226 Just like Alli, Tracey lost both her parents to preventable diseases: her mom died from cancer and shortly after, her dad died from a heart attack. This made her determined to be a pillar of health and to spread the message through as many media outlets as possible. She launched the wellness website Alright Now to give people the tools they need to live their healthiest life - from nutrition and fitness to relationships and parenting. We think she rocks! Jill Tomback - Beating breast cancer - Episodes 26, 27 and 28 Jill and I were room-mates when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer at just 25 years old. She endured four years of conventional treatment, including chemo and surgery. But since then, she’s taken the holistic route: she’s a plant-powered Pilates superstar, an avid juicer and a big fan of the Gerson therapy. As of this year, she’s celebrating 9 years cancer-free. Preventing Cancer Naturally Part of cancer prevention is giving your body the tools it needs to be in great health. That’s why we love Organifi juice powder. It’s the perfect combination of detoxifying, energizing nutrients to keep disease at bay. Alli’s personal favorite is the Organifi Gold, which contains turmeric, ginger, reishi and turkey tail mushroom to keep you calm, help you sleep and soothe your muscles. Just mix the powder with hot water or oat milk for a super creamy bedtime drink. Organifi products are completely vegan, gluten free, soy free and keto-friendly. Get 20% off with the coupon code foodheals. Join our Italian Vegan Getaway To fully heal, you need to fully relax. On today's podcast, I talk to Leslie Durso, Vegan Chef and Healthy Living Educator. Leslie talks about why she became vegetarian at eight years old, her experience as the first vegan chef at Los Angles Food and Wine Festival, and what tools and staples you should have in your kitchen. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/vegan-styled-life/support
After spending a week in Italy with Vegan Chef Leslie Durso, there was no way I could NOT bring her on the podcast! Leslie describes herself as a “level 5 Vegan,” meaning that she’s intense about all things vegan - no meat, no dairy, no animal byproducts, plant based...the whole package. But I would expand her description and tell you that she is a Level 5 Human Being. She shows up in her life and in her business so powerfully and gracefully that I wanted to make sure you got the chance to know a bit more about her and her philosophies. When Leslie started her blog in 2010, she had no credentials. She was not a trained chef. She was not a nutritionist. She had not gone to culinary school. But she did have the desire to establish herself as an expert in her field and an insane drive to bring plant based eating to the world. A few months later, and with the realization that tens of thousands of people were coming to her site, she got serious and creative and started her career as a Vegan Chef. Now, Leslie partners with the Four Season Hotel, implementing vegan menus, hosting retreats and running their wellness programs. She runs Vegan Retreats (like the one I just came back from) in her beloved country of Italy. She has a TV show called Accidentally Vegan on the Fab Fit Fun TV Network. She’s appeared on The Food Network, The Discovery Channel, The Hallmark Channel, Everyday Health and Mother Nature Network and has written for MindBodyGreen, VegNews, CNN.com, Redbook, Glamour and Maxim, just to name a few. You could say she’s earned a bit of credentials. ;) But her credentials are not what we talk about. We talk about how she has stayed true to herself - her ethics, her values and her goals - during her business journey. We discuss… How she got focused and serious with her blog and how she monetized it through advertising and promotions. How her modeling and acting career lent itself to her current work. Why she decided she didn’t need to go to culinary school and how she instead went on a mission to be mentored by great chefs all around the world. How she leads her life with the belief that she is doing good in the world and showing up to provide value and how she lets that belief system fuel her career. The difference between dreams and goals and how doing the next best thing, just one step at a time has accumulated into a LOT of progress for her! Practices and habits she has to stay grateful for the present moment and her understanding that she is always in the middle of her journey. In a world where you can literally be anything and do anything, Leslie’s story is a great reminder for each of us to stay true to ourselves on our business journeys, so that we can design the life and business we truly desire! Check out more about Leslie here → http://lesliedurso.com The Great 8 Series is featuring 8 of my favorite conversations from the past few years! These episodes are some of the most referenced, quoted or downloaded and have so much wisdom to help you along your journey! I hope you enjoy and share!
In part 2 of our Round Table, we say goodbye to Melissa (our amazing PA, check her out at ForkinPlants) and hello to the beautiful and super talented vegan chef Leslie Durso! She joins our panel of plant-based peeps, Whitney Lauritsen, a vegan entrepreneur and coach on a mission to help conscious brands grow, and Erica Mandy, a journalist and founder of theNewsWorthy. Travel tip #2 It’s all about downloading what you need. Make sure you download your podcast episodes (or videos, or ebooks) so you have something to listen to, read or watch while you travel. Alli uses the Overcast App. If you need to work, download the web pages you need to reference. Google drive can be accessed offline so you can work on your documents without needing wifi. Travel tip #3 When you sit on the plane, make sure you wipe the seat, window, and tray table. You really don’t want to pick up germs before you’re on holiday. You can also bring a natural antibacterial spray and essential oils to keep your hands clean. Travel tip #4 Make sure you stay hydrated while you travel. Whitney uses a LifeStraw - it screws onto any water bottle and will filter your water. Do not drink coffee or tea while you’re travelling, caffeine will dehydrate you. Travel tip #5 To combat jet lag, CBD is your friend. It will help you sleep on the plane. Take plenty of turmeric and ginger before you travel. Their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties will knock out any germs, help regulate your body and keep it healthy on your travels. Pack some probiotics. This will help if you’re going to countries where the food is not what you’re used to eating. Travel tip #6 Change your sleep routine to avoid jet lag. The Jet Lag Rooster app will create a schedule for you to tell you when to go to bed, when to get sunlight, and more, so that you can avoid jet lag. You can also get blue light glasses, which block the light from the plane and help your body adjust to different time zones (Swanwick do stylish ones!). Travel tip #7 Always bring a pashmina with you - you can use it as a blanket and a pillow. It makes the perfect neck support if you wrap it around your water bottle. Travel tip #8 Bring accessories to make the flight more comfortable. Our favorite eye mask is the Dream Sleeper, it’s super comfortable. We also love Sleep Buds - headphones you can sleep with! The fleece ones feel amazing. Travel tip #9 Pack healthy foods for the plane! For example, fruit & nut bars (choose those without added sugar), nuts, or fruit (like oranges or apples - but beware, you’ll have to eat them before you get off the plane because some states have strict restrictions on what fruit can be brought in), cucumber and hummus, little packets of olives, or even vegan cheese and crackers. You can also tell the airplane your dietary preferences ahead of time. Travel tip #10 One of the best tips if you’re travelling internationally: sign up for Global Entry and avoid the long queues. We did a little wine tasting during our panel (we absolutely love Scout & Cellar’s wine selection)… and speaking of wine tasting, we’ll be doing some of that on our next Italian Vegan Getaway! This is an intimate women-only retreat. You’ll feel like one of the locals since Ravello is a town Leslie has been going to for years. No tourist busses, no huge groups - just 12 like-minded women. There are just a couple of spots left so if you’ve yet to join us…. What are you waiting for? Go to www.foodhealsnation.com/italy for all the details, or check out Leslie’s Instagram stories. Or email Alli with any questions at info@foodhealsnation.com. Who better to have on our healthy travel round table than three queens of the plant-based movement? Whitney Lauritsen is a vegan entrepreneur and coach, on a mission to help conscious brands grow. Melissa Glazewski is a private vegan chef, founder of ForkinPlants, and the organizational brain behind Food Heals. Erica Mandy is a journalist and founder of theNewsWorthy. Add a little vegan wine by Varietal group to the mix, and it’s not long before we’re sharing all sorts of secrets about our past! Can you guess which travel story links to each guest? She went trekking in a remote part of Arizona. But with only a compass and a map to guide her, she got lost and couldn’t find her way back. She was skydiving in Australia. The moment the parachute opened, she knew something was wrong… She traveled to Portland only to find she couldn’t poop for days. Her friends suggested an unusual (but delicious) relief for constipation. She got scammed the second she stepped off the plane, and nearly didn’t make it out of Mexico. Basically, traveling can be lots of fun, but full of surprises! So, here’s the first round of healthy travel tips. Travel Tip #1: Protect yourself from scammers: Find out all the details of your trip so you don’t get taken advantage of. Wait for people to introduce themselves, ask them what hotel/car service they work for, and don’t give away your information. Travel Tip #2 Get a hotel with a fridge (not a mini-fridge!) and get some vegan basics. Even if you don’t have a car there might be a grocery delivery service like Instacart that can bring you everything you need for a small fee. When Alli was in Philadelphia for Podcast Movement, she got Instacart deliver organic vegan groceries. She stocked the fridge with tomatoes, hummus, avocado, Miyoko’s vegan cheese and grapes and would have people over for cheese and wine! Travel Tip #3 Make sure you take your vitamins on holiday. An easy way to do this is to buy a travel pill dispenser, basically a little circular travel pill holder that you can store all your various vitamins in a compact way that is great for packing. Vitamins Alli never leaves home without are B12, vitamin C, pro-biotics, melatonin, and oxypowder (which you can only get from the Global Healing Center (don’t forget the discount code is foodheals17). Travel Tip #4 Travel with CBD. CBD combats anxiety while traveling, it helps with jet lag and it’s a natural alternative to sleeping pills. Suzy has the best stuff - find it at CBD Fountain. Foodheals for 20% off. Travel Tip #5 Pack your greens. Did you know 92% of Americans have a vitamin deficiency? It’s important to boost your energy, cleanse your body and feel amazing any day, but even more so when you travel. Alli never leaves home without Organifi, the easiest way to eat your greens no matter where you are or what you’re doing. When you wake up and drink a glass of Organifi Green Juice, you kick-start the body’s processes of daily detoxing, producing natural energy, and managing stress. It’s a great way to start the day with a smart choice. So, what is it? Organify is a green juice powder infused superfoods - Alli’s favorite is coconut and ashwagandha. Simply mix with water and boom: you’ve got all the nutrients you need to jumpstart your energy, curb that jetlag and power through your day. You can get 20% discount on your first order with the coupon code foodheals. Travel Tip #6 Choose your drinks wisely. Whether you’re traveling business or pleasure, you’re probably going to engage in a few cocktails while you’re out of town. So Alli’s best advice is to choose organic biodynamic wines whenever possible. My friends at www.scoutandcellar.com know what up. Y If you want to sample the best vegan products hassle-free, then reach out to Varietal group - everything they promote is organic, biodynamic and vegan, free of sulfites and added sugar. And it’s female-owned. A great way to support women entrepreneurs. Travel Tip #7 Increase Your Dose of Vitamin C. This helps boost your immune system while traveling. It also helps with jet lag and you can’t overdose on it! Next time… we’ve got another guest joining the panel: vegan chef Leslie Durso. But you’ll have to wait until the next episode for her healthy travel tips! What you’ll learn in Episode 250: How to check your wine is vegan (and why you need to!) Our secret truths revealed Who went trekking in Arizona and got lost in the dessert for hours? Who got scammed at the airport and nearly didn’t make it out of Mexico? Who couldn’t poop in Portland? Ah, Italy! The pizzas, the pastas, the wine, the gelato…. But what if you’re vegan? Well, let’s bust a myth right now: it’s a total misconception that travelling to Italy if you’re vegan, or gluten-free for that matter, is difficult. We’re used to the American versions of Italian foods, where it’s all about cream and cheese. Truth is, traditional Italian specialties, particularly in the South of Italy, are just about fresh produce done in a healthy way. Real Italian food is a whole other world - and it’s super vegan-friendly. How do we know this? Because we’ve travelled throughout Italy and sampled the best vegan options! Like our Italian Getaway last year, where we went to the best restaurants Ravello has to offer. Check out Episode 211 to hear what previous guests thought of the experience. But let’s go back to veganizing for a moment. Today is about how can you veganize Italian dishes at home, reduce the calories and make them healthier. Vince, our talented producer for the day (and mixing & mastering engineer) is Italian, but intolerant to dairy. Here are some of Leslie’s go-to Italian classics made plant-based. Vegan Alfredo sauce: Boil cauliflower in vegetable broth until it’s tender. Place cauliflower, vegetable broth, roasted garlic, nutritional yeast, cashew nuts and caramelized onion in a blender. Blend until smooth and pour over pasta. Best. Sauce. EVER. Chicken Milano: Substitute the cream with a vegan cashew cream: Boil and rinse cashew nuts, drain them, and blend with a little water, nutritional yeast, salt and pepper. Substitute the chicken with seitan or breaded & fried zucchini steaks. Eggplant parmigiana: Thinly slice eggplant lengthwise, sprinkle on salt and leave for 10 mins. Pat dry, then pop them into flour and oil to fry. Make a parmigiana by blending cashew nuts, caramelized onion, roasted garlic, nutritional yeast, salt and pepper. Layer the eggplant in an oven dish with tomato sauce, whole basil leaves, and the parmigiana sauce. Bake until it bubbles. This dish will change your life. Easy vegan gelato: Place a couple of frozen bananas with your flavor of choice (cacao, berries, maca, etc.) in a blender. Blend until it’s super smooth and super thick. Place back in the freezer for an hour or two - this firms it up so you can scoop it. Alli’s super-fast chocolate mousse: Place avocado, cacao powder, plant mylk, and vegan sugar in your blender. Blend until smooth. Leave in the fridge for chocolate mousse or place in the freezer for chocolate ice-cream. The perfect remedy for a sweet tooth. How to make lemon olive oil: Peel an organic lemon or orange (just the top layer, without the rind) Put the peel in the olive oil Leave it for a few days and voila! Zesty olive oil that’s delicious drizzled on salads and soups. These are just some of the dishes you could learn at our next Italian Getaway. That’s right, we’re going back to the Amalfi Coast! And we’d love to take you with us! This is not a large tour-bus type holiday - it’s an intimate retreat for like-minded women. We will fully immerse ourselves in Italian culture. We’ll sample the most exquisite food and wine, go shopping, hiking, and sailing. Leslie will teach you how to make healthy vegan meals so you can bring a taste of Italy back home with you. But that’s not all you’ll take back - this is a life changing retreat, where you will make connections that will last a lifetime. Go to www.foodhealsnation.com/italy to find out more. She’s appeared on The Food Network, The Discovery Channel, The Hallmark Channel, Everyday Health and Mother Nature Network and has written for MindBodyGreen, VegNews, CNN.com, Redbook, Glamour and Maxum, just to name a few. It wasn’t the logical thing to do. Leave my business, my clients, my daughter, my hubs, my bird and the whole flow of my everyday life for 2 weeks. And it’s not like it was for business, either. No promise of a return on my investment that would show up immediately in my numbers. Nope. Just a full blown, let’s-go-explore-the-world kind of an adventure in a country I’ve been longing to visit for decades. It wasn’t logical at all. And yet, I knew I needed to go. You see, back in April, we found out that we are pregnant with baby #2. For the first two days, I was pure sunshine, totally ecstatic that our little family is expanding. And then...something unexpected happened. Hormones, debilitating nausea and waves of uncertainty engulfed me and I completely unraveled into a sea of emotions. All I saw were the beautiful plans I had created for Biz Women Rock for the year ahead, crumbling brick by brick as I realized that they were no longer possible in the way I had envisioned. I couldn’t start my 6 month Masterminds in the latter part of the year because the baby’s coming in early December. I couldn’t launch my high end Mastermind for the $1million + business women because I needed to be fully present for the entirely of that program and I couldn’t guarantee that with a newborn. I couldn’t host my 3rd Annual Retreat in November because that would be way too close to my due date. And oh my god, I had to get started on my course asap because I needed to get that up and ready to be on autopilot when I’m on maternity leave. Of course I knew all I had to do was re-think and re-work how and when I would do things. But, there were so many voices in my head drowning out any kind of rational strategies (which I totally blame on hormones). I felt nauseous and exhausted all the time (damn that first trimester!). I was uncharacteristically unfocused. I was frustratingly unambitious. And while I was so wonderfully excited about my growing family, I felt so lost in my business. And that’s when I saw my friend Allison’s post about her Vegan Italian Retreat. You might think that it was an escape for me. But it was far from that. The Italy trip represented my opportunity to get quiet and clear with myself so I could realign with my business...and my purpose. The logical thing would have been to hire a coach and figure out a strategic plan that I could immediately put into practice. But, I do not take action based on logic. I make decisions and live my life based on what my heart and my internal voice say to me. And that’s why, at 4 months pregnant and with my business in a complete holding pattern, I stepped onto a plane to start my Italian adventure. While I knew the time alone to think and meditate would be powerful, I had no idea the entire experience would impact my business - and my life - to the depths that it has. So, as a way to give you a glimpse of this incredible experience, I want to share a few things I learned about myself on my Vegan Italian Retreat and give you a related business lesson you can carry with you as well. I am deeply in love with women. I could spend hours describing the lusciousness of the Italian food, the overwhelming beauty of the landscape and the calming cadence of the language, but the truth is that the women I was with were the outstanding feature of the entire trip. My experience with them deepened my love for you...for each of the beautiful, complicated, strong, perfectly imperfect women who are a part of this community that I am blessed to lead. All week long, I watched each one of them (myself included) integrate themselves into a tapestry of diverse interests, personalities, cultures and experiences. And they did it with such grace and love for the whole, for the community, and also with immense respect for themselves. They were each in their own right, brilliant, gorgeous, flawed and loving and it made my heart sing that these are the women who I get to be around all the time! My clients, the ladies in my masterminds, my community, my listeners, my guests, my friends, my mom and my sisters...literally every single woman who is in my life embodies these qualities and I am so humbled that they surround me and that we create a beautiful blanket of love in this world as we support each other. Each one of these women made a permanent impression on my heart and I was reminded that this is what happens when women come together...we impact each other, we cry with one another, we make each other laugh, we love one another...we bring out the LIFE in each other. BUSINESS LESSON: Reconnect with the deep love you have for those you serve. Slow the hell down I have come to loathe the concept of the entrepreneurial hustle. The supposed right of passage that we all have to go through in order to experience “success.” The sleepless nights, the penniless times, the endless feeling of going, going, going that must exist inside our bellies. I’m over it. I’ve been over it for a while now, but this pregnancy and the trip to Italy was the cap on my commitment to #nomorehustle. That commitment plus the physical changes of pregnancy has meant a big slow down for me. I’ve felt in slow motion since I found out about our new baby and the trip to Italy made it clear as to why that slow down has been vital during this particular season in my life. Before all this, I was getting up at 5:30am, journaling and busting out some big to-do’s before the household ever woke up. Now, the need for sleep is so deep that the few times I’ve tried to jump back into my old schedule in order to get things done have knocked me on my butt. In Italy, 5 course dinners make it impossible to end a meal before at least 4 hours have passed. Which forced us all to get out of our addictive habits of jumping from one agenda item to the next and actually be with each other. We came up with dinner questions so we could all get to know each other better and told elaborate stories during which we didn’t feel the pressure to shorten details for the sake of time. Even at our hungriest, we took our time with each bite of food, savoring the flavors, textures and tantalizing aromas. More than once, I sat out by the pool, overlooking the deep blue Mediterranean waters after finishing a meditation and quieted the voice in my head that told me it was time to do something productive. Instead, I just sat a little longer. Moving slower has given me the gift of going deeper. Deeper with my conversations. Deeper with my intentions. Deeper with my questions. Deeper into myself. Deeper into my purpose. And, deeper into my business. While this season has not been fast moving for Biz Women Rock, it has been transformational at its core. Because I’m going deep with my intentions and my dreams and my connection to my business...listening to my inner voice who is directing me where to go next. BUSINESS LESSON: Take time to slow down in your business. Maybe a daily meditation practice, a weekly day off or even a regular retreat for yourself. The time out of the normal cadence of your business will be the exact fuel you need to continue growing it with purpose. Evolution is Uncomfortable, Necessary and Exciting. Sometimes, we need to unravel a bit in order to see things clearly. The beauty of being out of flow and in a funk is that you’ll be asking yourself a lot of questions as you try your best to get out of it. You become a seeker - someone who seeks a deeper understanding of herself, her world, how she fits in it and how she’s contributing to it. And a seeker understands and accepts the complexities of evolution. During the most tear-soaked weeks of my early pregnancy, I went on a lot of walks with my husband, sharing with him all the competing thoughts about my business and how I felt like it was a big sign that I was experiencing a transformation. But what direction do I head into? What is my next move? I was SO SURE about things just weeks before and now it all seemed so unclear. My husband listened patiently and lovingly reflected an idea back at me that I had had earlier on in the year. “You haven’t moved on it yet,” he said, “and it feels like it would be the perfect next step for you.” After a few brainstorms, I realized that not only was this business idea incredible, but it was an exhilarating opportunity to live out the next version of my evolution as a business woman. And I became excited. I saw clearly how the Biz Women Rock brand would thrive as it gave birth to an entirely new brand that would support women in a powerful way. But I was still moving slow. And truthfully, my entire personality is based upon the belief that when I want something, I go after it HARD and FAST and FEARLESSLY. But I was not moving hard or fast and I was still working on the giant moments of fear that arose because I wasn’t moving at my normal pace. What’s going to happen if I’m not as visible on social media? What’s going to happen if I don’t send out my email this week? What’s going to happen if I’m not doing as many Facebook Lives as usual? What’s going to happen if I’m not launching a new program right now? When we fear stopping or slowing down because it might make us look bad or unprofessional or, even worse, irrelevant, then we deprive ourselves of the silence we need to evolve into our best selves. I packed all that excitement and fear in my luggage as I flew to Italy and I returned with none of it. Because as I swam in the cold waters of the Mediterranean, ascended and descended thousands of mountainside stairs, listened to the church bells ring every morning and savored the magical flavors of vegan gelato, I kept getting reminded to TRUST the evolution. Every morning, the girls and I would pick from a deck of Angel Cards and over and over again, I would get cards like this one, reminding me that the change in direction or the transformation I am experiencing is divinely guided and to just TRUST. I realized that all I had was a brilliant idea. The beautiful vision of what that idea could flourish into. The belief that I could do it. And, most importantly, the dedication to take action in line with my heart. The fear of the unknown, the comparisons, the “keeping up with the Jones’” business version, the need to be seen in order to be relevant, the giant closet of “shoulds” that I stare at every day in business… ...they all disappeared in Italy. And instead, love and trust took hold. BUSINESS LESSON: There is no such thing as “made it.” You and your business are always an evolution in progress. And YOUR EVOLUTION is what is guiding your business’ path. Find silence so you can be guided and TRUST in the changes happening. * I am deliberately not sharing more details about this new business yet...but you’ll be hearing about it soon! Live courageously in the magical space between your reality and your wildest dreams I’m not going to sugar coat it. There have been very real business repercussions to my slowing down. I have not launched the Masterminds I had planned, which has an impact on my bottom line. I have not been as visible as usual, which means I have to continue showing up with authenticity. I paused the Biz Women Rock Academy, which has left a hole that was once filled with the most loyal of my community members. These were all the right decisions, but ones that impacted the direction in which my business was going. But being an entrepreneur takes courage. Courage to make sudden changes. Courage to stop when everyone else tells you to go (or to go when everyone tells you to stop). Courage to not follow the same path everyone else seems to be following. Courage to BELIEVE IN BIG DREAMS that seem impossible to everyone else. But mostly, the courage to keep doing the inner work it takes to stay connected to your true voice so you know how to move ahead and how to live magically between your reality and your dreams. I have never felt so comfortable in my skin than I did in Italy. Literally and figuratively. Belly popping out, in my bikini, cracking jokes with the girls and staying by myself at the villa when I felt like I needed the alone time. Eating beautiful meals every single night. Exploring the breathtaking countryside every day. Breathing in the fresh air and the sights of the deep blue ocean around me. But Italy is not my day to day reality. My reality is that I am a mom to a vivacious 2.5 year old. Wife to a creative entrepreneur and dedicated husband and father. A pregnant and growing 39 year old. An entrepreneur who is simultaneously established and still trying to find her place in the business world. A passionate business woman who has great lessons to teach and has never felt comfortable being called an “expert.” My reality is just like yours. I’m doing my best to live a full, vibrant life and design a business that I love that provides abundantly for my family. My reality is pretty damn good, let’s be honest. But, still with the typical struggles we women entrepreneurs have. So it’s my dreams that I lean on to fuel my journey. Dreams of bringing joy and love to as many women as possible in the world. Dreams of creating more abundance in my life. Dreams of more freedom. Dreams of meeting more amazing women. Dreams of bringing creative projects to fruition. Dreams of living into my highest good in the world. And somewhere between these dreams and my reality is where I choose to live. Because this is where the magic of manifestation takes place. Every single one of the ladies on the Vegan Italian Retreat had a different reality at home. And yet the entire Italian experience had been a dream of ours at one time. And simply by living in the possibility that this dream was possible, we all ended up together for a life-changing week of delicious, breathtaking and beautiful adventures. BUSINESS LESSON: Living in the space between your reality and your dreams gives you the opportunity to stay present in your life and manifest the most creative of your dreams! At the time I write this, I’ve been back for 5 days and I have never felt more grateful for my life. I have never felt more inspired to LIVE my life and take baby steps towards my highest calling every single day. I have never felt so in love with you and the podcast and business you have supported all these years. I have never felt so motivated with a calming and trusting energy to take action (and, thankfully, after 4 months, I am filled with the energy to do it!). And I have never felt so peaceful about who I am and where I’m headed. Thank you for being on this journey with me. I’ve always been up front with you about how imperfect and full of ups and downs this business journey is. And I continue to share mine with you in hopes you can feel a little more inspired to embrace the beautifully imperfect journey you are on. In this episode I interview Leslie Durso, a vegan chef and wellness expert in Los Angeles. An Italian-American, Leslie has eaten plant-based since the age of eight and you may remember her from her entertainment days when she starred as Leslie the lab girl, on the popular TV show Bill Nye, the science guy that ran from 1993 to 1998. It was during the show that Leslie discovered her love of education and shifted from science to plant-based food. After establishing herself as a private chef for the NYC and Hollywood elite, Leslie began hosting cooking segments on television and online, including her show Accidentally Vegan for the FabFitFunTV membership community. She regularly appears on Food Network, Discovery Channel and Hallmark Channel, as well as in other mainstream media. Leslie is currently the vegan chef at the Four Seasons, Punta Mita in Mexico and a chef partner at PLANTLAB culinary school. In this interview Leslie discusses: • How she became a chef despite not going to culinary school • How she got the gig at the Four Seasons hotel • The key factors that have made the Four Seasons job such a success that it resulted in her becoming the hotel's wellness ambassador • Why she refuses to allow a separate vegan menu at hotels and restaurants and instead insists vegan dishes are part of the main menu • Why she prefers to partner with culinary schools and other collaborators instead of running and operating her own platforms • How to attract the right partners for your business • And much more Visit Leslie Durso's website Check out Leslie's show Accidentally Vegan on FabFunFit TV Find out more about PLANTLAB culinary school Brands mentioned in vegan business news roundup: Beyond Advisors Mac and Moon The LC RESOURCES: My Online PR Course for Vegan Business Owners & Entrepreneurs: Vegans in the Limelight My book Vegan Ventures: Start and Grow an Ethical Business Follow Vegan Business Media on: Facebook Twitter Instagram Connect with me personally at: Facebook Twitter LinkedIn

Our favorite functional medicine expert, Dr. Stephen Cabral, has spent decades researching all forms of medicine. He believes they all have a place, and can all be used to bring about health. His mission is to help people go from chronic pain, depression and disease to a state of vitality and happiness. Check out Episode 186 where Dr. Cabral shares how he healed himself and tells us all about intermittent fasting, detoxing and Ayurvedic medicine. What is Disease? A simplified way to look at disease is this: people either get sick because of toxicity, or because of deficiency. If we can address the deficiencies (by supplementing vitamins, minerals, amino acids, etc.) and begin to remove the toxicities (such as excess hormones, plastics, etc.), we can heal anything. Western Medicine vs Functional Medicine Unfortunately, the goal of conventional medicine is not to get better. It just addresses the symptoms. So, for example, high cholesterol is just a symptom (or sign) that there is a deeper issue, like an auto-immune condition or excess toxins. Conventional medicine will prescribe drugs to manage the symptoms without getting to the underlying root cause. They might make you feel a bit better in the short term, but they don’t provide long-term benefits. On the other hand, functional medicine will look at what might be causing the condition, and help you bring your body back into a state of healthy balance. That said, if you’re suffering a heart attack, you’re better off heading to the emergency room rather than your natural health doctor! Your Health and The Rain Barrel Effect Your body is in a constant state of homeostasis: it is always trying to return to a healthy balance. This means that it can deal with a lot (of stress, junk food, toxins) before finally disease shows up in your blood tests. It’s what Dr. Cabral calls the “rain barrel effect,” which is also the title of his best-selling book. Your rain barrel is essentially your toxic load. If it’s overflowing, your health suffers. You need to empty it out - to clear your toxicity - in order to bring your body back into balance. How to Heal Your Body According to Dr. Cabral, you can heal anything within 12 to 16 weeks (3-4 months). That’s because all your red blood cells turn over every 90-120 days (also 3-4 months). As this happens your mitochondria (your cells’ energy stores) are replenished with nutrients, you’ll have more energy and fewer symptoms. Diet is a huge part of that journey, but you need to take a holistic approach. Addressing food without overcoming emotional trauma just won’t work. A lot of our disease comes from our emotions. Where to Begin? A great way to find out what is happening in your body is to have functional tests done. These will look at markers that conventional medicine usually ignores, to give you a complete picture of what is going on with your health right now. You can order these tests on Dr. Cabral’s online store. Dr. Cabral will read through them and you’ll get a phone call from one of his team’s health coaches to discuss the results. Dr. Cabral’s Weight Loss and Detox Tips: Forget about crash diets or regimes, they are not sustainable and don’t work long term. Crowd out the bad foods with nourishing foods (plant based whole foods are your friends here). Don’t graze all day long, allow your body 4-5 hours between meals to give your cortisol levels a chance to level out. Reset your circadian rhythm - your body detoxifies from around 10pm. Eat foods that support your liver detoxification (like cruciferous veg: broccoli, kale, etc.). Try Dr. Cabral’s detox shakes or his detox protocol. Dr. Cabral and Leslie Durso’s Healthy Travel Tips: Get your antibacterial wipes and wipe everything around you - planes are never cleaned. Get a good night’s sleep before your flight. Avoid alcohol, coffee or tea on the plane, and drink a lot of water (that said, a glass of wine will help you sleep on those super long flights). Ramp up your immune system a few days before: take plenty of vitamin c, zinc and green juices. Fast so that your energy can be focused on protecting your body from germs and toxins (like flame retardants and bug sprays) rather than digesting food. Never eat airplane food - it’s microwaved and full of preservatives. Bring your own health supplements. Only a Few Spots Left on Our Italian Vegan Getaway We’re going to Italy in under a month!! We are 70% water. If the water we drink is toxic, of course our health suffers! The average tap water contains a cocktail of chemicals: pesticides, plastics, chlorine and fluoride, to name but a few. Today’s guest, Travis Chappell, is at the forefront of a movement for clean, pure, healthy water. Travis was always pretty active, playing several hours of basketball every day when he was in college. But when he started doing door-to-door sales, his health deteriorated. He gained 40 pounds, and was constantly suffering with aches, pains, and various health issues. And one day, he couldn’t fit into 38-inch trousers—he knew something had to change. That’s when he bought a water filtration system, and started drinking a gallon a day and going to the gym. Eighteen months later, he’d lost 60 pounds and 6 inches off his waist. Water changed the way Travis thought about health, and now he’s on a mission to help others transform their wellbeing through the water they drink. There’s a direct correlation between water and health. Our modern diets are acidic, even the air we breathe is acidic. The body produces fat cells to neutralize the acidity that it simply isn’t equipped to deal with. It also stores toxins from water, food and environment in our adipose (fat) tissue. Result: weight gain. But when you drink filtered, alkaline water, you change your body’s pH and help it to detox, which means it doesn’t need to produce extra fat cells, and you naturally lose weight. What’s more, alkaline water contains a higher number of negative ions—powerful antioxidants that fight free radicals and keep you younger. Now you might be thinking, “Well, this doesn’t apply to me, I buy bottled water.” But what about the water you cook with, the water you shower in? The crazy thing is that in a 10-minute shower, you absorb the same amount of chemicals that you would if you were to drink 8 glasses of that water! And it’s actually worse, because when you drink water, your kidneys and liver have a chance to filter out some of the toxins. When it’s absorbed through your skin, all those chemicals go directly into your bloodstream. So, what’s the answer? The first step is to get your water checked to find out exactly what you’re dealing with. Travis’s company Revive Water carries out water testing, and specializes in designing water systems tailored to your unique needs. And if you’re renting, no worries—you can take the system with you when you move! Click here for more info! Travis is also a dear friend and fellow podcaster. He was inspired by John Lee Dumas to start his own podcast about something he’s super passionate about: networking. If you want to be successful, you need to surround yourself with successful people. And if you want to become an entrepreneur and wave goodbye that that office cubicle, then you need to reach out to like-minded people, to your network. A great place to start learning how to do just that is Travis’s podcast, Build Your Network. We think it’s a fantastic resource for anyone thinking of starting their own business, so check it out! Leslie Durso is changing the face of vaganism. A vegan chef and healthy living educator, Leslie is the glowing face of a fresher plant-based movement that refuses to compromise style and sustainability. In this episode we talk about how at 9 years old Leslie decided she would be a vegetarian and why that has been so important to her. We discuss her life in Hollywood working on shows like Bill Nye and how she saw an opportunity to turn her passion for food into a full time thing. Now preparing meals for people all over the world, showing people what vegan living is all about on national TV and helping with the launch of multiple plant based cooking schools in the country...Leslie is living her dream in a BIG WAY. Cows, pigs, and hens are sentient beings, just as intelligent as we are. They feel loss, love, pain, shame, fear, and solidarity. They want to be free, nurture their young, and play. Yet the factory farming industry is built with total disregard for these animals’ needs. It’s all about maximizing profits. The good news is that there are amazing people doing ground-breaking work to expose animal abuse and change legislation. Cody Carlson heard about Mercy For Animals when he was a private investigator for a business intelligence firm. Moved by their work, he reached out to the founder, Nathan Runkle (check out his episode). Before he knew it, Cody had quit his job, grown a goatee and become an undercover animal rights investigator. It was a wild ride. Working undercover as a farm hand is exhausting physical work and emotionally intense. He witnessed how over 4,000 cows were kept constantly pregnant, saw newborn calves torn from their mothers and left to die, or sold for slaughter. He saw how much the animals wanted to play, to be loved. His footage of workers’ cruelty and the atrocities committed in the farm was broadcast by the media and resulted legislation that changed how these animals are treated. And that was it. He was hooked. He went to law school and is now one of Mercy for Animal’s attorneys. Part of the work Cody is doing with Mercy For Animals is overturning ag-gag laws. Instead of reforming, the animal farming industry lobbies to amend legislation and keep their inhumane practices within the law. From around 2010, ag-gag laws made it a crime to conduct undercover investigations that reveal what goes on in factory farms. Mercy For Animals is winning the fight against ag-gag laws, but some states still have them: Montana, Utah, North Dakota, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and North Carolina. If you’re a resident of one of these states, you can help overturn these laws by contacting your local representative and encouraging them to speak out. Are we ever going to see a world without slaughter houses? YES! With the rise of plant-based milks, dairy profits are plummeting. With growing public support, a radical movement away from meat and towards plant-based eating, changes in legislation and corporate policy, and delicious plant-powered options, we’re going to see the end of factory farming in our lifetimes. Additionally we can all be healthier, protect the environment, help the animals, and feel better than we’ve ever felt by ditching factory-farmed meats and adding more plants to our diets. What can you do today to help the animals? Contact your law-maker and encourage them to speak out about animal cruelty and ag-gag laws. Join an animal activism group. Mercy For Animals is the leading international farm animal protection organization. You can sign up on the website and check out how you can get involved. Share Cody’s video of footage of how dairy and animals are produced in modern farms. You can check out the viral video at http://www.whatcodysaw.com/. Join Hen Heroes to take part in animal activism. Reach out to the Oink writers’ group if you want to get involved with writing letters to the editor and raising awareness. If you’re a California resident, you can help get legislation passed that would change the game for animals raised in California. Half a million signatures are needed—you can volunteer at com/volunteer to sign up. Please share the link with your friends! You can also donate. Donations help Mercy For Animals run undercover investigations and petition for real change in animal protection legislation. Cody and Leslie’s tips to eat healthier and plant-based wherever you live: Veganize your meal when you eat out (for example, you can order Denny’s scrambled egg platter and swap the eggs for potatoes). Stop eating processed foods. Eat real, whole foods. Always look at the ingredient list. If it doesn’t read like a recipe, put it down. This is our last episode of 2017… happy almost new year!! We’re here with one of our favorite guests, the super cool, super stylish Leslie Durso (check out Episodes 95 and 96 for her story). She’s a vegan chef, healthy living educator and has been plant-based since she was 8 years old. Leslie grew up in an Italian household, making vegan versions of whatever her mom was cooking. Now, she loves nothing more than sharing her knowledge and passion for veganism with as many people as possible. Her farm fresh, plant-based recipes are broadcast to over 130 countries, and she’s just partnered with Plant Lab Culinary School offering pop-up cooking courses all over the world. Leslie has also created vegan dishes for all the menus at the Four Seasons Punto Mita in Mexico, where she will be running retreats in 2018. With just one week until Christmas, how can we bring more plant-based recipes and more love to our holiday? How can we bring more acceptance to the table, particularly to those who might not completely understand our healthy choices? Leslie’s answer: cook for them. Make something so good they are begging you for the recipe. Let them start the conversation. When it comes to spreading the vegan word, nobody wants to be told what to do, they want to be inspired. Let’s inspire them with delicious food. You can find tons of tasty, easy-to-make vegan recipes on Leslie’s website. Drumroll please, we’ve got a very special announcement!
