Imagine this: You're about to play the biggest game of your life when someone offers to just put the final score on the board—you win! No sweat, no struggle, no game. Would you take that deal? In this eye-opening episode of The Addicted Mind Podcast, hosts Duane and Eric Osterlind explore why most of us would actually turn down this seemingly perfect offer. They introduce the powerful "Scoreboard Metaphor" from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) that helps separate goals from values in addiction recovery. Many people in recovery focus solely on hitting milestones—30 days sober, 90 days sober—only to feel empty when they reach them or completely defeated if they relapse. This episode flips that thinking on its head by showing that while goals (the score) matter, how you play the game (your values) matters far more. The hosts break down why people often relapse after reaching milestones. When we chase outcomes without connecting to the values behind them, we create an emptiness that no achievement can fill. The scoreboard might say "win," but without the journey—the struggle, the growth, the connection—it feels hollow. Through practical examples and personal insights, Duane and Eric show how this mindset shift transforms recovery. If you're living each day with honesty, courage, and connection, each day is a success—regardless of whether you've hit your sobriety goal yet. And if you do relapse, you haven't lost everything. The values-based actions you took still matter, and the game isn't over. Download The Worksheet The episode concludes with five simple steps to apply this metaphor to your own recovery journey, helping you identify your true values, clarify meaningful goals, and build resilience when facing setbacks. The hosts also invite listeners to download a free worksheet and join their supportive community where these concepts can be explored further. Whether you've felt lost chasing empty goals or you've hit recovery milestones but still feel unfulfilled, this episode offers a refreshing perspective that could change how you view your recovery journey—and maybe even your life. Through his personal experiences and insights on sobriety and mental health, RJ encourages others to break the stigma and start living their best lives beyond alcohol. He wants to help people understand that accepting themselves is the key to feeling free in life and to self-compassion, which is how they can genuinely give compassion to others as well. With over 9 years of sobriety under his belt, he can confidently say that quitting drinking took some serious stubbornness. After 10 years as a high voltage line tech foreman, a divorce, and a diagnosis of ADHD at 33, RJ decided to shift gears and make a change. Hey there, my friends! Welcome back for another Mindset Minute. Today, I want to dive into a topic that's close to my heart: living your values. Each of us possesses a unique power system—a set of core values that guide our decisions and actions. These core values are deeply ingrained within us, and shaped by our experiences, beliefs, and aspirations. And here's the beautiful thing: when we align our lives (and our careers) with our values, magic happens. We experience a profound sense of internal happiness, and God responds in kind, rewarding us with flourishing relationships, fulfilling careers, and a life that truly resonates with our soul's deepest desires.   To start living your values, I invite you to reconnect with your childhood—the purest essence of who you are. Reflect on the things that mattered most to you back then. Maybe it was helping others, expressing yourself creatively, or immersing yourself in physical activities like dance. Your childhood holds the key to uncovering your authentic self and rediscovering the values that have always been within you. By identifying and embracing these values, you pave the way for a happier, more meaningful approach to life.   So, here's a mantra to carry with you this week: "I am in love with my life. I live my values and show up with integrity in all my interactions. My values are a reflection of my soul's deepest desires."    Now, I invite you to reflect: What are your values?   Wishing you a beautiful day and an abundance-filled week ahead!     READY TO TAKE IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL?   Grab a copy of the workbook “How to Calculate Your Rate as an RD Entrepreneur” Discover practical steps to determine your value, understand expenses, set income goals, and calculate your ideal hourly rate. Simple Modern is a $225m bootstrapped business... Mike owns the majority of the company. Mission: "We exist to give generously." Simple Modern is an employee-owned Oklahoma based company whose mission statement is we exist to give generously. Our desire is to make 5-star products offering remarkable value so we can give to worthy organizations making the world a better place. Use the "75-year-old self principle:" - What would your 75-year-old self regret if you didn't do? (credit: Jeff Bezos) Leadership stages: Player Player/Coach Coach General Manager "I love the name of your podcast. You have to keep learning." What are the best and worst parts of being a CEO? Best: Building culture, being part of a community, having lunch every day with your team. It creates huge leverage to do great work. Worst: Stress, isolation. Understanding your identity? Is it too tied up in an unhealthy place?  Mike's purpose: Teaching Giving Leading and creating value Parenting Positively alter the lives of others (as many as possible) "Great leaders create more leaders. We measure it wrong. It should be about creating more leaders." The professor, Rufus Fears, started the lecture. The first thing out of his mouth was, "If you are here trying to get a pink slip, I can tell you that the class is full, and there will be no pink slips given." Mike did not let that stop him. He stayed after class, talked with Professor Fears, went to his office, and talked with him. And earned entry to his class (and a few others of his later). It's a great lesson that we need to be proactive and take initiative. We need to go after what we want. Is your identity coming from a healthy place? Is it coming from accomplishments, titles, or materialistic things? Money? Or have you found your identity in something bigger than yourself? A well-defined purpose almost always stems from helping other people. Why you should write: There are multiple levels of understanding. They are: You know nothing, then you have an intuitive understanding of something but you can't explain it to someone else, then you actually behave in a deliberate way and can explain it. That goes to a point where you can understand a situation in real-time. And finally, you get to the point where you can teach it to someone else. A writing practice can help clarify your thinking and help you better understand something so well that you can teach it to others. Let's develop a writing practice. Writing scales. Hosting a podcast scales. They also increase your surface area for luck and serendipity. Why Mike has no desire to sell Simple Modern: The whole point of having money is that we can trade it for things that are better than money. "You can't convert money to friendships. You can't buy things that give you meaning & purpose. Life is in pursuit of priceless things." Mike's favorite marketing pitch ever (Jon Hamm in Mad Men): Kodak asks for a branding campaign around a new product. It is a circular device that allows you to flip through pictures. Kodak hopes to  highlight the technology and call the product "the wheel." Then, they get a master class on branding from Jon Hamm in Mad Men… Before we can lead others well, we have to be internally healthy. Leadership is an inside-out exercise. What do you value? It is easy to determine what someone truly cares about: What do they do with their free time? Where do they spend their extra money? "I frequently spend time comparing what I say I value to what my behavior shows because the worst lies are the lies we tell ourselves."

It's one thing to learn wilderness skills, and it's another thing entirely to integrate them into our lives in meaningful ways.  This is the path that Dariya and Jefferie are walking, with the added ingredients of a newborn child and teaching both online and in-person classes! We talk about their desire, no, their NEED to live in a way that reflects their values, with drinking only spring water, eating locally, and incorporating wild foods and movement into their lives as well. Walking through this modern world while honoring our ancestral heritage is actually really hard, and we talk about the commitment needed to make it work. Forest Educators like Dariya and Jefferie are connecting with a growing number of adults who are feeling drawn to live closer to nature, and with like-minded individuals, so they also are developing a strong community aspect to their offerings. The wild magic of the northern forests in Ontario provides the backdrop for our conversation, offering hope for a future where we learn to live more gently on our one green earth.  Website:    https://www.findingpolaris.org/ Instagram:   https://www.instagram.com/findingpolariswc/ Facebook:     https://www.facebook.com/findingpolariswc Join the Forest Educator Patreon! https://patreon.com/ForestEducatorPodcast Connect with Ricardo: https://www.foresteducator.com/ https://www.theforestboxforkids.com/ https://www.hawkcircle.com/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ricardo-sierra-5980931/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_forest_educator_podcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RicardohawkSierra

When it's time to choose a resolution that will actually work, we need to use our values & priorities to guide that process.  This is likely different from what you have tried before because normally we think of what we need to do better or how we need to be better and usually that means we're actually navigating from lack,  guilt or shame. When your goals and resolutions align with your values you are more likely to stick with it and actually make progress towards it or achieve it.  Listen to this episode for a new way to choose and plan for a successful New Year's Resolution, or any goal.  Access a values exercise here: https://bit.ly/kocoachingvalues Episode 21:  The Power of Living Your Values https://www.coachwithkristen.com/podcast/episode/30c7d231/21-the-power-of-living-your-values New Client Promo:  www.coachwithkristen.com/reset Learn more about coaching with me: www.coachwithkristen.com Follow me: https://www.facebook.com/coachwithkristen https://www.instagram.com/kristen.odegaard.coaching/

Welcome to another edition of "Nugget of Wisdom," a weekly email series I share on Fridays, designed to provide you with a moment of thoughtful reflection as you step into the weekend. In the spirit of perpetual learning, consider this: What purpose does today serve if we don't glean at least one valuable lesson from it?  I invite you to embrace the joy of discovering something new each day, as I believe it nourishes our minds and enriches our lives. Speaking of lessons, let's draw inspiration from the timeless tale of Joseph. I've included a brief, engaging 6-minute video story above for your viewing pleasure. Afterward, take a moment to reflect on the following: ⭐️ Aligning Actions with Values: Consider the significance of your values, such as loyalty. How actively do you manifest these values in your daily life? Reflect on instances where your commitment to these values is evident – be it in a single day, throughout the week, or even across the span of a month. ⭐️ Balancing Humility and Ambition: Delve into the concept of humility and its delicate dance with envisioning and pursuing your aspirations. How do you strike a balance between staying humble and reaching for what is possible? Reflect on the role of uncertainty in your journey – how does the unknown shape your perspective and actions? I encourage you to watch the video and ponder these questions, fostering a deeper understanding of your values and aspirations. Wishing you a weekend filled with discovery and enlightenment! Until next time, Enjoy your weekend. And don't forget--Be Positive, Be Yourself, Be the Champion You Want to See!

We make thousands of decisions every single day. Some are more important, some are made with lots of forethought, others are more reactionary... or even emotional. It's not a bad thing to have emotions factor into your decison making-- but do you even realize you are making an emotional decision? And, which emotion is guiding you? For many women- decisions are made based on whether or not they feel guilty for doing or not doing the thing. Decisons are made based on not wanting to be a bad person or disappointing others. Shandel shares the "Commit to It and Do It" framework she presented in Germany for living according to one's core values. She outlines the six steps using the acronym COMMIT: Clarify values, Organize life around them, acknowledge Misery as a sign you've strayed, Make hard decisions, Invest in your values, Trust yourself by not compromising. The COMMIT Framework: C - Clarify your top 5 values. Getting crystal clear on the values that are most important to you is essential for the next steps. Clarity provides focus.O - Organize your life around those values. Once you know your values, intentionally structure your time, goals, decisions, etc. to align with what really matters to you.M - Misery is a sign you've strayed from your values. Pay attention when you feel unhappy or unfulfilled - it could indicate you're off course from living congruently.M - Make hard decisions to stay true to your values. Living by your values often requires letting go of less important things, even if they're convenient or profitable. Having the courage to do this is key.I - Invest in what you value and divest from what you don't. Put your energy, money and resources toward the things and people that align with your values.T - Trust yourself by not compromising your values and orienting your life around them. Have integrity by staying true to your word with yourself. Rely on your instincts to guide decisions.Clarifying your top 5 values provides focus and is the foundation for living intentionally and developing self-awareness of your core values provides clarity and focus to achieve goals. Organizing your life and decisions around your values, rather than other factors, ensures you spend energy on what's most meaningful and leads to fulfillment. Feelings of misery or unhappiness can indicate you've strayed from your values and it's time to realign. Living by your values may require difficult decisions, but has rewards like peace of mind that outweigh other benefits. Invest your energy and resources into what really matters to you based on your values. Surrounding yourself with truth-tellers who hold you accountable helps you stay aligned with your values over time. It's important to treat yourself with the same kindness you show others to stay motivated living congruently. Having compassion for yourself during missteps helps you get back on track living according to your values instead of experiencing shame. Thanks for joining us - don't forget to subscribe, rate (or like), comment & share!Visit our website and follow us on social media - Facebook, Instagram & LinkedInWe LOVE your feedback & questions - click HERE to share your questions/feedback or email us at podcast@shandelgroup.comSubscribe for our free 66 Seconds with Shandel Group at shandel.com#LeadForClarity #LeadershipDevelopment #Leadership #Growth #ExecutiveCoaching #LeadershipCoaching #EmotionalIntelligence #Clarity #PersonalAccountability #Communication

Kira Hug:  But first, this episode is brought to you by the P7 Client Attraction Pipeline, which is our client acquisition system. And anytime we survey our community of lovely copywriters, we ask you what do you want? And you say, I need help finding clients, I need a prospecting system. So we put it together and we continue to improve and add to it so that it works for copywriters based on what's happening in the marketplace today. And inside the Pipeline Prospecting System we have over 21 pitching templates, so there's different styles you can use, different templates you can pull from based on what works for you. There are also different tools and pitch tracking templates that you can pull from so that you… It's really easy to start pitching tomorrow and you don't have to reinvent everything from scratch. And there are also a ton of other templates and tools and resources inside the system that other copywriters have used to find new clients. So, we wanted to make it really easy for you to just get up and running and find those clients, especially during weird recession times like right now, where it feels a little tricky. And so if you are looking for something like that, you can learn more at thecopywriterclub.com/p7. Okay, let's kick off our episode with Michelle.

Without us being consciously aware, our values drive how we show up in the world - our personality, our habits, our behaviours, our decisions and priorities. They're also the measure we use to recognise whether our life is turning out the way we want it to. When how we live our life matches our values, we feel content. When they don't, we feel as though something is wrong. So in this episode we dive into why at midlife our values often change and give you some quick and easy exercises to go through that will bring you clarity and direction. Jen Kem is an ultra-quotable entrepreneur. She is full of incredible wisdom based on her rich experiences in business - learning how to live her values, maintain her confidence, and empower others. Jennifer "Jen" Kem is a San Francisco Bay area-based brand building and leadership expert who gets entrepreneurs seen, heard, and paid for being themselves. She's the creator of the Master Brand Method: a framework to develop powerful brands that win customers' hearts, which she uses in strategic consulting for emerging entrepreneurs, celebrity brands like the Oprah Winfrey Network and Steve Harvey, and other major corporations including Verizon, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Bank of Hawaii. She is a successful owner of three multimillion-dollar businesses and the proud mother of three children. The seeds of entrepreneurship were planted early Jen Kem had no intention of building a business, much less multiple successful businesses. But a long and winding path led her here.  At a young age, Jen was in search of one thing: Knowledge. Growing up in Hawaii, she went to her local library in search of information and a world outside her small island community. After devouring the entire children's section, she worked her way through the adult books - and wished for more.  Sitting on her Grandmother's shaggy 1970's carpet, she was handed the business section of the newspaper and her eyes lit up. She began to realize that the world was impacted by business decisions.  Even in school, when asked what she wanted to become, she answered precociously that she wanted to become the General Counsel of Coca-Cola International. The adults in her life were stunned.  Jen never became a lawyer, but what she became is incredibly powerful - a high-level Business Strategist and creator of The Master Brand Method. Passed up for a promotion inspired her Jen was working in the corporate world before she became an entrepreneur. She was happy there - until a white male coworker got a promotion over her.  Regardless of her respect for him, she realized that her qualifications would never be enough in her industry. It was time for her to pave her own path and create the kind of world she wanted to live in.  She left behind her corner office and charted a new path - a path of trying new things, rediscovering herself again and again, and using her values as a path to the life she wanted. Doing what works, quitting what doesn't Jen has owned multiple businesses, and they didn't all work out. In fact, she uses her story as a teachable moment to us entrepreneurs - to show us that sometimes, a failure is actually an important lesson.  Before there was Doordash, there was Webvan, and Jen Kem was on the launch team. It was a great idea back in the late 1990's! But the market wasn't ready - and the idea flopped.  Jen watched the Founder of Webvan recover and go on to do great things. When Doordash became popular, she laughed at the timing: Sometimes an idea is great, but the market just isn't ready.  Before she founded The Master Brand Institute, Jen launched an underwear store in Hawaii. It was a great idea, since there weren't any others like it at the time! Women on the Hawaiian islands were traveling back to the mainland and shopping at Victoria's Secret for their options in underwear, because they didn't have any local options. But when the recession hit, her store went under - and she subsequently lost her house, her marriage, and her confidence. Jen fell into a deep depression.  It would have been easy for Jen to tell herself negative stories about her “failures.” She could have decided that she was bad at business, and that she shouldn't try again. Instead, her ten-year-old daughter gave her a big pep talk. Jen began seeing a therapist and gaining back her mental and emotional health. It inspired one of her best pieces of advice for us: Focus on what you're great at.  When Jen asked herself the hard questions, she realized that she didn't actually love retail! Was it really a failure if she wasn't passionate about it long-term? Retail was limiting, and one of Jen's key principles is autonomy - and her business wasn't in alignment with that value. This realization made Jen realize that it was time to create a company that was, and she bounced back.  Values are a verb Jen's core values are autonomy, justice, generosity, leadership of self, and legacy. Now, her business clearly reflects those values.  While businesses frequently feature their values as words on a wall, Jen reminds us that values are how we live, not what we preach.  Your values can help you make important business decisions. For example, Jen's biggest goal is to be autonomous; To be in charge of herself and in control of her life. Now, when presented with a choice, she filters it through her values before coming to a conclusion. Does this option give her more autonomy, or take it away? Does it require so much of her time that she loses too much freedom in order to participate? Does this serve the legacy she is trying to create?  Jen's work to live her values inspires us to do the same. What are your personal values, and how do you actively use them in your business? Quotes “I am obsessed with learning. Reading is my favorite thing to do. Every morning my grandmother would drink her Lipton tea and I would sit on her shaggy 70's carpet. She would give me the business section of the newspaper, so I started reading about business. I started to understand that that was what made the world move.” “As a visionary, we do see the future. Sometimes the ideas aren't ready. Sometimes the market is not ready, but that doesn't mean the idea isn't good.” “The system wasn't set up to support people like me - women of color, women ingenral. The system was set up to support people who played golf with our boss.” “I made the big scary decision to leave my corporate job. I took 9 months to create an exit plan. I had to, because I had two young kids. I spent the entire 9 months putting away half my paycheck. I had no reason to leave, I was making $400,000 a year in a corner office with a disco ball in it. I had the trophies and triumphs.” “Entrepreneurs are the reason we solve problems in the world.” “I wanted to help others like me get rich, respected and recognized for the fact they could see the future.” “I'm committed, not attached. Not every business I build is my dream home. We get so attached to our dream home. But a real estate investor never gets attached! So I look at my business like a real estate investor. I put all the elements inside it to make it work, but if it's not working and I've tried everything, I can elegantly shut it down.” “Courage is a muscle. It's something you have to keep training. People ask me if I lose confidence. I am still scared to do things! But what I can trust is what I know. I would rather fail fast than fail slow. It doesn't mean I'm not scared.” “Values aren't what you wish for. They are who you are and how you're behaving right now.” “Legacy isn't about the future - legacy is what you're doing right now to create the world you want to live in. Every decision I make runs through that filter.” “Maybe is a place we use as an excuse. It slows us down. I only say a clean yes or a clean no. When I filter things through ym values, I don't have regrets. You start to feel like yourself.” Links mentioned in this episode: Visit Jen Kem's website at www.JenniferKem.com    Connect with Jen Kem on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/jenniferkem  Follow Jen on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/JenniferKemComm  Follow Jen on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/jennifer.kem/?hl=en  Follow Jen on Twitter at https://twitter.com/_JenniferKem_

My guest today is Sarah Brittain. Sarah is a friend of mine from CrossFit Roots and someone who I didn't know a whole lot about going into this, but whom I really enjoyed talking to and learning more about today. On this episode, we talk about her journey from engineering to speech pathology to finance back to speech pathology, and then into real estate. We talk about a year-long break that she took in her 20s and how that year helped shape the rest of her life to this date in terms of living out her values and the life that she wants to live. We break down the human mind and how complex and capable it is and also talk about the importance of taking risks in order to live the life that you want to live and be the person that you want to be. I really enjoyed this conversation with Sarah and I hope that you all do as well! Thank you for listening!!

Every year, our family chooses a word, a scripture, and a quote that serves as a guide for our decisions and actions. We have hinted at this process on the podcast over the years but we have never made a full episode breaking down the full process until today! This fun and easy experience has been one of the most transformative things we have done in our family.  It all started when Melissa and I realized that setting individual goals every year wasn't working for us. We would always fall off the wagon by January 15th. So instead, we started picking a word or a phrase to live by for the year. This idea evolved into choosing a family theme and it's been a game-changer for us.  Our family theme for this year is "Simplify and Expand," and our scripture is Matthew 6:33: "But seek first the Kingdom of God and all his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you." Our quote for the year is: "Fill your life with lots of experiences, not lots of things. Have incredible stories to tell, not incredible clutter in your closets." The process of choosing our family theme is a collaborative one. At the end of each year, we reflect on what worked for us and what didn't, and we have conversations with our children about the year we've had as a family. This year, our goal is to simplify our lives, starting with decluttering our home, so we can have more space for meaningful experiences. They come prepared with their own scriptures and quotes that align with the theme, and we all vote on the one that embodies the theme the most. It's a fun and meaningful way for our family to come together and focus on what's important to us. This simple progress has brought so much joy and connection to our home that we will never go without it!
