MN lawmaker: Public schools engage in 'censorship' by not teaching CreationismThe Friendly Atheist, By Hemant Mehta, on May 07, 2024https://www.friendlyatheist.com/p/mn-lawmaker-public-schools-engageIn this episode the hosts discuss a heated debate over an education bill in Minnesota, introduced by Republican State Senator Glenn Grunhagen. The bill, known as SF 3567, aims to prevent book banning by school districts. However, Grunhagen opposes a section of the bill that would allow parents and librarians to restrict material for students, provided the restrictions are not based on viewpoint or content.Grunhagen, a known climate change denier and Christian nationalist, argues that liberals support censorship when it suits their agenda. He draws a parallel between this bill and the exclusion of creationism from science classes, framing both as censorship. Grunhagen's background and previous attempts to introduce creationist views into school curricula are discussed, highlighting his persistent efforts to infuse his religious beliefs into public education.Cynthia critiques Grunhagen's flawed reasoning, pointing out his reliance on outdated creationist arguments like the cosmological argument and the watchmaker analogy. She shares a personal anecdote about her past belief in similar reasoning and underscores the importance of teaching evolution and critical thinking skills in schools. The conversation shifts to the bill's implications. While some see it as a necessary measure to protect intellectual freedom, others worry about its potential to limit children's access to diverse information. The hosts agree that critical thinking and access to information are crucial for students' development. They debate whether decisions about educational content should rest with individuals or committees, emphasizing the need for oversight to prevent biased decision-making.Jimmy expands on the broader political context, noting the rise of aggressive tactics and mob-like behavior among certain conservative factions. He underscores the importance of maintaining a separation between religion and government, lamenting the influence of figures like David Barton, who distort historical and scientific facts to fit their agendas.Cynthia echoes these concerns, expressing hope that rationality will prevail but acknowledging the persistent push from certain groups to undermine scientific education. She highlights the broader societal implications of this trend, warning that replacing factual education with religious ideology could hinder future generations' ability to navigate an increasingly complex world. The episode wraps up with a reflection on the importance of qualified oversight in educational decisions, ensuring that children's access to knowledge is not unduly restricted by individual biases. The hosts agree that while the bill has its flaws, its intent to safeguard intellectual freedom is a step in the right direction. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.22.2 featuring Kelley Laughlin, Eli Slack, Jimmy Jr. and Cynthia McDonaldBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

Monday morning live with Natasa Denman featuring one of her amazing authors, Anne Maree Durnan. Anne Maree currently lives at the base of The Blue Mountains in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. She is a mum, author and works part-time helping people recovering from addiction. Cloud Kingdoms is her debut children's book, with the rest of the series in the works. As a five-year-old, Anne Maree visited a planetarium with her Mum and her Grade 6 Science Class. Her head had been tilted to the sky ever since. When her son was seven, they made up this world finding shapes in the clouds while lying on their trampoline. In 2013 inspired by her Aunty Peg who published her own short stories, Anne Maree started writing it as a book but put it down again. The Covid-19 lockdown in 2021 presented the perfect opportunity to get back into writing and finish this unique story. Anne Maree has found tremendous joy bringing this magical world in the clouds and its colourful characters to life. 3 Key takeaways: 1. No formal training required. Just desire and action. 2. Passion & Compassion 3. If you don't ask you don't get. Pittsville FFA students run tours on cranberry bogs during harvest as part of their Cranberry Science Class. Lindsay Meissner, Pittsville FFA Advisor and Agriculture Teacher talks about what the class is and their partnerships with local growers. Wisconsin is on two “top 12” lists that aren't necessarily good. Cris Coffin, American Farmland Trust Senior Policy Advisor, shares more on their report related to farmland conversion and what this means for the future. A sheep producer may sell a carcass for $300, but Danielle Dockery of Driftless Tannery says the hide can nearly double that price because it sells for $350. That's the reason she and two other farmers started a tannery. She likes to educate people on the recycling aspect of hides, and how they provide so much benefit -- the lanolin is good for babies and the elderly. Have you ever wondered "What are some of those 1% things I can do to become a better runner?" Well, as my guest Brian Livingston scientifically describes, one of these things is fueling. And in my opinion, fueling may be a lot more than a 1% difference. Being properly fueled not only puts you at an advantage, but is actually necessary to perform well in the first place. As Brian so eloquently describes, Maurten can be that proper fuel for your gas tank. In this episode you will learn: * The difference between Fueling & Hydration * Why carbohydrates are crucially important for athletes * The science behind how Maurten works and why it's superior to every other fueling brand * Why it's important to fuel for training and even distances as short as 1500m * The benefits a younger runner can gain by using Maurten's products I hope you all enjoy science class with Brian Livingston! This one was a blast to record, and Lex, Leo, and I are all very passionate about how well Maurten's products work. Let us know in the comments if you've ever used Maurten before (: Please like, subscribe, and share with your friends if you enjoyed today's episode! In the past couple of decades, Earth and space science education for K-12 has evolved significantly, much due to the work of geologist, educator, and writer, Michael Wysession. This is a time where the science education we receive plays a big role in our response to climate change; an adaptive and engaging curriculum, beyond the usual textbook, is paramount – and way more fun! In this episode, we talk with Wysession about his career path as a research geologist and as a science educator, the challenging process of implementing new science standards in the United States, and how we can feel hopeful about our future. This episode was produced by Jace Steiner and mixed by Collin Warren. Hola Hola! We are back for another episode of Conversaciones con Colegas: Season 3. This episode brings on another amazing educator, Alixandria Guzman. Alixandria is currently a middle school science teacher in Arizona. She continually ensures that she is representing her EL students in her classroom curriculum despite the barriers that present themselves through Arizona educational policies. Our hope and vision for our podcast is to elevate the voices and needs of educators and students, especially those voices which are often silenced or overlooked. Alixandria's work aligns with LatinXChange because she is advocating for cultural and language representation of her students in her science class. Although Arizona does not currently have a policy on using native language to teach emergent bilinguals, Alixandria uses other strategies to help her students grasp the difficult concepts that come up in science.. ¡Gracias por escucharnos! Today I'm sharing a story way back from my 6th grade science class and how a recent realization has impacted my mindset around how we approach fat loss, changing our behaviors around food and body image. That's what I'm talking about today and why this matters for your long term success. I offer some specific, actionable steps you can take to begin enjoying the effort rather than suffering through it.
