Send us a textStep back in time to the American frontier where five extraordinary women defied expectations and carved their names into history. The vast expanses of the American West weren't just shaped by cowboys and outlaws – they were transformed by women of remarkable courage, talent, and determination. Our journey begins with Annie Oakley, whose unparalleled sharpshooting skills captivated audiences worldwide while she maintained a carefully crafted feminine image that made her revolutionary talents acceptable to Victorian sensibilities. We contrast her approach with Calamity Jane, who boldly rejected feminine norms, embracing masculine attire and behavior to create opportunities in a world that offered women few paths to independence. The notorious Belle Starr emerges as the compelling "Bandit Queen" whose practical buckskins, boots, and armed presence challenged conventional womanhood and captured public imagination through sensationalized stories that both celebrated and simplified her complex reality. We then explore Sacajawea's crucial but undercompensated contributions to westward expansion – her indigenous knowledge of plants, languages, and diplomacy proved essential to the Lewis and Clark expedition's survival, revealing how Native expertise enabled American colonization. Finally, Sarah Winnemucca's powerful advocacy illuminates indigenous resistance through her groundbreaking public speaking career and autobiography that challenged harmful stereotypes while navigating the precarious position of cultural mediator. These women weren't merely passive witnesses to history – they were active architects of the American West, challenging our understanding of frontier life through their exceptional skills, defiance of restrictive norms, and tireless advocacy. Their stories reveal how media and mythology both elevated and constrained them, creating legends that sometimes overshadowed the complex realities of their lives. By examining these five remarkable women beyond the archetypes that often define them, we gain profound insights into female agency, resilience, and the multifaceted nature of fame in a transformative era. She was queen of the Wild West outlaws. She rode with Jesse James and other desperados. Belle Starr was a one-of-a-kind, dangerous woman who stole horses, robbed stagecoaches and lived a life of crime on the open plains. Her mysterious violent death still baffles investigators. Should Starr be considered a different kind of feminist icon?
Dane Huckelbridge discusses the settings in his novels and his research--from Africa for No Beast So Fierce to the plains of Oklahoma for his latest, Queen of All Mayhem--the tale of the most dangerous woman of the American west, Belle Starr. Dane was born and raised in the American Middle West. He holds a degree from Princeton University, and his fiction and essays have appeared in a variety of journals, including Tin House, Literary Hub, The Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, and The New Republic. His debut novel CASTLE OF WATER was published by St. Martin's Press in 2017, and his book NO BEAST SO FIERCE was published by HarperCollins in 2019. Send us a textIn a land ruled by bullets and betrayal, Belle Starr rose to infamy as the Wild West's ruthless "Bandit Queen." She rode with killers, stole with outlaws, and turned survival into an art form. With ties to Jesse James and a trail of stolen horses behind her, Belle thrived where law and loyalty meant nothing. But her empire of rebellion ended in blood, leaving her body cold on a dirt road and her murder unsolved. Dive into the violent legend of a woman who lived — and died — by her own rules.Watch the video version here: https://youtube.com/live/Hh86RCXVyZADon't forget, you can watch us live on Tuesday nights at 8PM CST - U.S. on YouTube and Facebook! Lightning Jim - Belle Starr The Female Outlaw. ep8. The opening scene finds the notorious and ruthless outlaws torturing an indian brave to learn the location of his hidden gold. Though the Marshals have made numerous arrests, the leader of the gang has yet to be caught. Indians claim Belle is protected by spirits, but Yellow Foot, the one who was tortured at the start of the show, takes his story to Lightning Jim. Jim wants the indians to stay off the warpath until he has a chance to take down Bell Starr on his own. Jim and Whitey Larson plan to folow her into the Canyon of Lost Souls, despite any warnings of evil spirits there. Meanwhile, Belle looks over her bounty of stolen horses, and complains to her hubby, Sam Star, and they talk about their next plans for robbery. It all seems like a story gimmick to me, to demonstrate the depths of Belle's ruthlessness.

The women of the Wild West mostly spent their lives laundering men's clothes, bringing up children, and avoiding getting caught in the crossfire - but that didn't stop a legend forming around them; not least dime novel heroine and ‘Bandit Queen' Belle Starr, who was murdered on 3rd February, 1889. The ‘outlaw' was riding home, two days before her 41st birthday, eating a piece of cornbread, when she was blasted off her horse. And then shot again, in the face. But mystery still surrounds the identity of her killer. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how the fallout from the civil war shaped Starr's life; ask whether ostrich plumes, rattlesnake rattles and dried earlobes could come back into fashion; and explain what Tom Starr's gang had in common with Elton John… Further Reading: • ‘Belle Starr the Bandit Queen: How a Southern Girl Became a Legendary Western Outlaw' (Atlas Obscura, 2013): https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/belle-starr-the-bandit-queen • ‘Belle Starr The Badass "Bandit Queen" Of The Wild West' (allthatsinteresting, 2021): https://allthatsinteresting.com/belle-starr ‘Belle Starr's Crazy Life Story & Grave!' The complete audiobook is available for purchase at Audible.com: https://www.audible.com/pd/Belle-StarrThe-Bandit-Queen-Audiobook/B0DLLM62RB Belle Starr – The Bandit Queen By William Yancey Shackelford Narrated by Lee Ann Howlett Legendary outlaw Belle Starr has been written about and portrayed in various media for well over one hundred years. Born Myra Maybelle Shirley in Missouri in 1848, Belle lived most of her life in Texas. She became notorious after living with and hanging out with members of the James and Younger gangs. Belle was a crack shot who rode side saddle while engaging in horse thievery, castle rustling, and holdups. In between these activities, Belle bore two children and was involved with (though not necessarily married to) several men, including Sam Starr. Belle was murdered in 1889 just 2 days before her 41st birthday. The case is officially considered unsolved. This book was the first of many about Belle and was published the same year she died.
Belle Starr was almost as famous as Billy The Kid. Listen to find out why!

These stories sometimes contain adult content which may be disturbing to some listeners, or secondhand listeners. So, discretion is advised. I am Andrea Anderson and this is Queens of the Mines, Season Three. Carthage, Missouri is America's Maple Leaf City, and the site of the first official engagement of the American Civil War, which took place July 5, 1861. Thirteen years earlier, Myra Maybelle Shirley, was born there on Feb. 5, 1848. They called her Belle. In an attempt to raise her to be a lady, the Shirley's sent their daughter to be educated at the Carthage Female Academy. Belle was intelligent but she was also hot tempered and if unchecked, her mouth could turn a mule skinner's face scarlet. As a result, she got into fights with girls and boys alike at the academy. She would carry this attitude throughout her whole life.

Welcome back to Wayward Stories! This week we take a look at a recent hike I did in the Ouachita Mountains of SW Arkansas to a cave reportedly visited by the infamous outlaw Belle Starr. It's more of a scramble than hike, but the cave itself is pretty incredible to check out. And for those of you who are more backcountry than bougie, more trekker than tourist, this is the hike for you! The Ouachita Range is far less popular than its more glamorous brother, the Ozarks, but that's exactly what a lot of us wayward souls are looking for… Join us tonight to learn all about it! You've heard her name in the same breath as other gun slinging wild west hooligans like Billy the Kid and Jesse James. But who really was Belle Starr? Was she the pistol-packing bloodthirsty Bandit Queen who delighted in breaking the law as her legend dictates, or... was she more a victim of circumstance and the turbulent times she lived? More importantly, who actually killed her that fateful day on February 3 1889? There are so many questions lingering about Myra Maybelle Shirley Reed Starr, and on this week's episode, we attempt to answer them all! It's another day, another adventure in Colorado Springs! The saloon is robbed (again) and this time the culprit is a teenage girl, Belle Starr. Dr. Mike offers to take the girl in to help her out and even tries to reunite her with her family but to no avail. In the end, the family agrees to let Belle go on her word that she will reform—but they learn soon afterwards that she is back to her robbing ways. In this episode, we discuss questions like: How is Colleen suddenly afraid of horses when she has previously ridden? And is teaching her to ride in the middle of town really the best strategy? Does Sully waffle in his opinions of how to deal with Belle Starr too much? Is the family too lenient in letting her go and believing she will reform? When the twig is bent, can it ever grow straight? Join Mark and Kelly as they explore these questions and more in the crazy, fun, unusual episode! Guess what?!
