Kia ora,Welcome to Tuesday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news both the US and China are eyeing rate cuts to bolster wavering economies.While all financial market attention is on the US Fed and its Thursday rate review - and market positioning is underway relative to the expected -25 bps cut - there is other economic news being released.The New York Empire factory survey delivered a negative surprise with new order levels falling sharply when they were expected to rise. That drove their overall survey negative when an expansion was anticipated.Across the Pacific, and in an unexpected result, China's retail sales data was released and were expected to have grown faster in August by +3.8%, up from +3.7% in July. Some anticipated a +5% rise. But in the end the rise was only +3.4%, and that was an eight month low.China's August industrial production was up +5.2%, a one year low, good but less than the +5.7% in July and also less than the expected +5.8%. All this was done with only a +1.6% rise in electricity production, and -3.2% fall in the production of fossil fuels, according to these official stats.China's house prices were generally stable in August. There were a few more signs of marginally higher prices in a few more cities for new developments. But the sales prices of pre-owned housing continues its slow droop and the trend is becoming ever more embedded as pressures mount.But probably worse from China was that fixed asset investment hardly rose, up just +0.5% for the eight months from the same period a year ago. It was expected to have risen +1.4% on this ytd basis. August 2025 alone actually came in lower than August 2024, a worrying sign.It is possible that the upcoming review on China's Loan Prime Rates may be cut to bolster their wobbly economic position. These are due for official review at the weekend.In Indonesia, they launched a new US$1 bln economic stimulus package to boost economic growth as a way of stabilising widespread unease about the country's direction.Indian exports softened in August, and their imports did too and by a bit more. That meant the expected -US$30 bln trade deficit for the month was lower than in July and lower than expected.India also had good labour market news with their jobless rate falling to a record low of 5.2% when a small rise was anticipated.In Australia, their National Climate Risk Assessment was released yesterday. They are trying to prioritise and plan how they will adapt and respond. The report says that while the world is already 1.2ºC hotter than during pre-industrial times, because of its sheer land size Australia is warming faster and is 1.5ºC hotter. Australia is experiencing more intense heatwaves on land and sea, rising seas and more frequent coastal flooding. Although the usual suspects remain in denial, a surprising number are now accepting it has become an urgent issue. Insurance premiums, even availability, will be how it will affect most people in Australia.But back with the headline financial market news. Ahead of the US Fed decision, equity markets are buoyant and all-in on optimism, but bond markets are wary, the USD is wavering, and commodity prices are little changed except for precious metals.The UST 10yr yield is now at 4.04%, down -2 bps from yesterday at this time.The price of gold will start today at US$3,679/oz, up +US$38 from yesterday.American oil prices are up +US$1 at just under US$63.50/bbl, with the international Brent price firmish just on US$67.50/bbl.The Kiwi dollar is at just under 59.7 USc and up +10 b ps from yesterday. Against the Aussie we are down -10 bps at 89.5 AUc. Against the euro we are also down -10 bps at 50.7 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today at just over 66.7, little-changed from yesterday.The bitcoin price starts today at US$114,938 and down -0.6% from this time yesterday. Playing in the competitive scene since 2012, Michelle is considered an OG of the East, best friends with Rob "Hometown" Immel, and the New York Empire crew. She's done it all, from playing in the World Dodgeball Association Championships in 2018, the legendary "Outkast" Traveling team, to making Team USA (2022) and making the practice squad for 2023/2024, Michelle continues her impressive and motivational journey forward. Trending: The American Ultimate Disc League and team New York Empire ! That's right ‘Professional Frisbee' is a big thing and getting bigger. Matthew Stevens, a professional ultimate disc player, for the New York Empire wanted to help his team better reach their potential, so in 2018 he asked his business savvy parents Barbara and Paul Stevens, to come help run his team. They didn't see that coming but they did! Because who says no to their kid? Paul owns a busy real estate construction company in N.Y. and Barbara worked her way up to become the President of a prominant Insurance company with four locations in CT. Paul funds the team and Barbara runs it. (She yells from the stands on game days kinda like Rebecca the team owner in Ted Lasso)  The two of them must know what they're doing because the New York Empire won the championship in 2019 and 2022 and are currently one game out of 1st place this year. Even sister Melissa has joined the operation. The team is 53 and 6. They've won two AUDL Championships and have had two 15-0 perfect seasons. Right now they're the number one team in the AUDL. The AUDL is the 'American Ultimate Disc League ' which has 24 teams in US & Canada. Think fast paced football, soccer and ballet combined.  More like football in that to score, you have to get the disc to someone in the end zone except a player can't run with the disc, he must pass it. (Impressive to me as the last frisbee I threw is still in someone's bushes.) They travel the country competing, and thousands show up for a fun night out. There are 30 players on the roster and four quarters in the game, 12 minutes each. The team also engages the fans who show up with music and what they call ‘activations'. An activation, said Barbara, is when you bring the crowd onto the field to do somehting, either throw a fisbeee or chase a frisbee, any kind for fun for the kids who attend. They even do things like ball hop games, so if you'relooking for someplace to go to entertain your kids this might be it! Depending on their age they even use some kids as disc runners, letting them run up and down the field getting the discs that go out of bounds and throwing them back to the ref. (Too bad my mother didn't know about this when I was a chubby little kid she might have opted for me to chase frisbees vs sending me to dancing school.)  The New York Empire games are very much a fun family atmosphere. The team has even done exibitions at half time for The NY Giants and Minnesota Vikings.  Paul and Barbara Stevens would love more people to come out to their home games. Home base is the Joseph F. Fosina Field in New Rochelle, NY. and games take place on Satrurday evenings at 7pm.  Captain Lawrence Brewing is their main sponsor and they have a food truck and snacks and a DJ to keep the crowd engaged. The New York Empire complete their undefeated season with a dominant set of games at 2022 AUDL Championship Weekend in Madison, WI, and hosts Adam and Daniel break down the final game.

Championship Weekend is here and Dan Hilton is joined by the Empire's Ryan Osgar then the Union's Pawel Janas to preview all four of the semifinal teams. The New York Empire, Carolina Flyers, Chicago Union, and Colorado Summit may be the most talented foursome ever assembled for the AUDL's biggest event, and both Osgar and Janas give their keys to victories for their respective teams.

Dan Hilton has your Over/Unders for the East Division Championship betwen the DC Breeze and the New York Empire. The Empire are 12-0 on the season and 2-0 against the Breeze, but DC's Darryl Stanley and his squad is coming off a statement win against the Philadelphia Phoenix to kick off their own championship push. The Empire, meanwhile, are full of MVP candidates and became the first franchise with two undefeated regular seasons.

Oliver Chartock and Connor Fortin, both making their first appearances in the playoffs with the Empire this season, join the show to help preview the match-up with the DC Breeze. While both teams have already clinched a play-off spot, the first for the Phoenix since 2013, the Empire still has an undefeated regular season on the line. Except big plays from the Hot Birds as they host the only team left in the league without a loss.

Dan Hilton has your Over/Unders for Week 11 of the AUDL season for the New York Empire and the Boston Glory. After a 23-19 victory for New York up in Boston, the stakes for both teams have changed a bit. The Empire has locked up the one seed in the east and hosting duties, plus their third straight regular season division crown, but the overall one seed in the play-offs is still on the line. For the Glory, they are mathematically still in the hunt for the three seed, but they must beat the Empire to stay in the fight.

Dan Hilton has your Over/Unders for Week 10 of the AUDL season for the New York Empire and the Montreal Royal. The Empire has already qualified for the postseason, but now the focus shifts to keeping up the intensity and staying healthy. For Montreal, it's all about getting a win by any means necessary and staying in the play-off picture.

Dan Hilton has your Over/Unders for Week 8 of the AUDL season for the New York Empire and the Ottawa Outlaws. New York dismantled Ottawa 30-18 in their first match-up and with the Outlaws having to play Boston on Friday night, it'll be an uphill climb for the Canadians for sure. But if you're New York, you have to make sure not to get caught after taking care of business last week against the DC Breeze.

Dan Hilton has your Over/Unders for Week 7 of the AUDL season for the New York Empire and the DC Breeze. The undefeated Empire host the 3-1 Breeze in a game that could very well decide the division. The Empire D has been bolstered by some high level midseason additions, while the Breeze have bounced back nicely after the opening loss to New York.
