“Mama Mork, Papa Mindy” (November 5, 1981) Thus far, we have not attempted the Happy Days universe of TV shows, and we're starting with this season four Mork & Mindy that has our interspecies marrieds creating a baby that redefine their gender roles. Essentially, Mork hatches an egg from which comes a child that puts a shocked Mindy in the role of father. It's silly, but as returning guest Diamond Feit helps us explain, it's also modelling parenthood outside typical gender conventions. Listen to Diamond's previous episode with us about Ranma 1/2! Listen to our previous adult baby episode (a Patreon exclusive!) with guest Nina Matsumoto! We have episode transcripts courtesy of Sarah Neal. Our logo was designed by Rob Wilson. Living here in New LA, fighting villains from afar. You got to find first gear in your giant robot car. The Xenoblade saga on Switch is now complete with the inclusion of Xenoblade Chronicles X (Xenoblade Cross if you're nasty). But it's been 10 years since the original release on WiiU; has it aged well? The very idea of video games "aging well" is a concept invented by tech-capitalists so don't ask me that. Instead ask "How much of the current open-world RPG landscape do we owe to it, do the gameplay elements designed for the WiiU transpose to the Switch well, and exactly how fantastic a game is it?" All these questions and more will be answered by Kat, Nadia, Eric, and Victor on this interstellar episode of Axe of the Blood God! Wanna feel old? Well don't! You're only 10 years older than you were when Axe of the Blood God started and if you placed the entirety of your life so far in Carl Sagan's cosmic calendar you would exist as a mere blip in the final second of the final day. "Sparks" artist Nina Matsumoto joins our panelists to talk about "The Batman Adventures: Mad Love" by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm. This was the first appearance of Harley Quinn in a comic and the origin story of one of DC's most iconic characters today. We talk about the behind the scenes story of Harley Quinn's creation, the mainstream comics debut of two of superherodom's most influential creators, and what goes into making a really good Batman story. Music by Sleuth On our next episode will be on "All-Star Superman" by Greg Morrison and Frank Quitely
Are you ready for a tale of tragedy and unrequited love (probably)? Come, sit down, and gather round as we read "Descending Stories" by Haruko Kumota. This series is “manga on hard-mode,” and is our first introduction to the Japanese art of rakugo, or “falling stories.” Join us as we struggle to grasp the key ideas of an art form none of us have any prior connection to, untangle some (possible) triangles, and discuss the life and death of art forms generally. Music by Sleuth On our next episode we will be joined by Nina Matsumoto to read "Mad Love" by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm.
We're thrilled to be joined once more by the gifted artist Nina Matsumoto as we discuss an episode all about gifted children! It's been 11 years since the last proper Monkey Island entry, and more than three decades since series creator Ron Gilbert left Guybrush and company in the hands of others. Nearly a decade after the last entry, Telltale Games launched Tales of Monkey Island, an episodic take on the classic adventure series—and the first installment in nearly 20 years with input from creator Ron Gilbert. And while it suffers from some of the drawbacks of Telltale's format, this five-chapter adventure game swerves away from the expected formula to deliver some truly memorable Monkey Island moments. On this episode, join Bob Mackey and Nina Matsumoto as they explore the final stop on our tour of the Monkey Island series. Believe it or not, there are topics we've never covered in the past 14 years of Retronauts, so it's always a treat to shine the podcasting spotlight on a subject that's gone untouched. And this week, we're talking all about cowboy games: the genre that traces its roots back to the very beginning of the medium, and only recently came back into vogue thanks to the wildly popular Red Dead Redemption series. On this episode, join Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, Henry Gilbert, and Nina Matsumoto as the crew looks at the rootinest, shootinest Western games made between 1975 and 1991. And stay tuned for part two, ya varmint! Be sure to read Nina's newest book: Sparks! Double Dog Dare. Retronauts is a completely fan-funded operation. Some might call him a murderer. Some might call him Germany’s greatest doctor. Some might call him a manga “Littlest Hobo.” Doctor Temna returns for Volume 2 of Naoki Urasawa’s "Monster," and so do TradeWaiters Jam, Jon, and special guest Nina Matsumoto. Join us as we continue our deep dive into one of the greatest comics series of all time. Music by Sleuth. Our next episode we’ll be joined by special guest Faith Erin Hicks to read "Delicious in Dungeon" by Ryoko Kui.
What’s in a name? Does a name really matter? The book we read this episode is named “Monster” by Naoki Urasawa. Nina Matsumoto (if that’s her real name) joins Jam and Jon to talk about the first volume of this series from Japan’s master of suspense, and we get into deep discussions about good and evil, identity, choice, and whether or not comics characters should have their mouths open when they talk. You know, the important stuff. Music by Sleuth. Our next episode will continue our look at Naoki Urasawa’s "Monster" with volume 2.
It's almost time! On Tuesday, January 14 at 8pm in San Francisco, CA, we'll be doing our next live podcast! We'll be joined by special guest Jordan Morris (from the podcast Jordan, Jesse, Go!) to celebrate the 30th anniversary of season one! There will be rarely seen clips, weird background characters, and so much more to come! We'll even be selling a custom poster for the event made by the always amazing Nina Matsumoto! So please, get your tickets now before it's too late and we will see you there!
Renowned horror cartoonist Junji Ito has a cat life now. His auto-bio graphic novel "Junji Ito’s Cat Diary: Yon & Mu" is this episode’s book, and Jam, Jon, and Jeff are joined by Nina Matsumoto to talk about the book, the artist, and what it’s like to live with cats. Music by Sleuth Nina joins us again for our next episode on "Monster" Vol. 1 by Naoki Urasawa.
Since the dawn of the medium, humans across the globe dreamed of wearing video game representation on their bodies—a practice that's only become commonplace in recent years. We've come a long way since the days of too-large or too-small pre-order t-shirts as the rare video game wearable, to the point where just about any character or logo can be found emblazoned on a well-fitted shirt, hat, or the odd pair of parachute pants. On this episode of Retronauts, special guest Nina Matsumoto of Fangamer joins us to talk about her career designing video game apparel, and to also help us trace the poorly documented history of the subject. Retronauts is a completely fan-funded operation. To support the show, and get exclusive episodes every month, please visit the official Retronauts Patreon.
Spirals: they make ya think! Nina Matsumoto joins Jam, Jeff, and Jon for a spiral into the mind of Junji Ito, reknowned horror cartoonist. His "Uzumaki (Spiral into Horror)" is an obsessive, surreal story about a town cursed by the spiral. We’ll dive right in, get tangled up, and hopefully make it out again at the end. Music by Sleuth. Nina joins us again for our next episode on "Junji Ito’s Cat Diary: Yon and Mu."
Spike, Kel, and Amanda are all US based so this episode we are interveiwing Nina Matsumoto about doing comics Canada.
We continue our journey through Jason Lutes’ "Berlin: City of Smoke" and "Berlin: City of Light." Now that the series is complete, our panelists have read all the way to the bitter end. There is no other way for the Weimar Republic to end. Join us as we check in on how the characters from the first book have fared as we head towards Hitler’s “demon ex machina.” Music by Sleuth. For our next episode we will be joined by special guest Nina Matsumoto as we read "Uzumaki" by Junji Ito.
Now that Retronauts has transitioned to deep dives of single titles over the past few years, it's about time to focus on a genre we rarely touch: adventure games. That said, this marks the beginning of a limited series where I (Bob) will be covering the entire LucasArts adventure library—one game per episode—hopefully with new and/or rare guests. Since I'm not covering these games in any particular order, there's no better place to start than The Secret of Monkey Island, the release that would define LucasArts' house style for its remaining decade of adventure game output. And there's no better guest than Monkey Island superfan Nina Matsumoto (of FanGamer and Sparks fame), someone who's loved the series since 1990 and even created the cover art for Ron Gilbert's latest adventure game, Thimbleweed Park! So join us as we enter the world of corrosive grog, rubber chickens with pulleys in the middle, and insult sword fighting and jump back in time nearly 30 years to explore a game that launched a much-beloved series.
If you missed the chance to see one of our many live shows in San Francisco and Portland, the good news is we'll soon be headed to Seattle to do a panel at PAX West 2019 with special guest, the great comedian and professional comedy writer, Mike Drucker! When: Saturday, August 31st at 12:30pm Where: PAX West, The Sasquatch Theatre And here's the panel description, straight from the PAX website: Anyone who grew up in the ‘90s knows about the (mostly terrible) legacy of Simpsons video games, but what about the fictional games within the show itself? On this panel, join Talking Simpsons Podcast hosts Bob Mackey and Henry Gilbert, and comedy writer Mike Drucker (Nintendo, Marvel, Adam Ruins Everything, The Tonight Show, The Onion, and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee), as they give you a guided tour of the various ways The Simpsons has parodied the medium of video games. From Bonestorm to Escape from Grandma’s House to Robert Goulet Destroyer, we’ll walk our captive audience through the many, many games available exclusively in Springfield! That's not all—if you attend, you'll also have a chance to buy one of our amazing show posters drawn by the amazing Nina Matsumoto! BE THERE!
Our artist friend and fellow Simpsons expert Nina Matsumoto is back to chat with us about love, insurance, and Hank Azaria fansites in this classic episode! You've heard of Hudson's Adventure Island, but how about Hudson's adventure games? Though the developer was mostly known for platforming and bomber men, in their pre-console-development years, Hudson cashed in on the adventure game craze.
