He's very cosmopolitan/urbane, lives in the city center even though he's 60, takes public transit, legitimately does his weekly grocery shopping at boutique cheese/bread/specialty food stores, always dressed impeccably. OWNS a beautiful specialty meat slicer that he has in his kitchen and uses for fresh/thinly sliced prosciutto (before you go there I've done ham hocks more than once). Interests: art, food and entertaining, culture. Loves to read, usually big sweeping historical books. Always the hardest person to shop for on my list because his taste level is very out of my price range and I'm tapped out on the specialty food theme. Dad recently become a grandfather (2 grandsons and one more coming in Jan) and it was a little weird for him - he loves my sons but the image of an old guy in a rocking chair teaching kids how to whittle didn't jive with his understanding of himself. He's starting to settle in. Has a very unique grandpa name with many indecipherable layers of historical context and family history that the grandkids will probably never understand. Buys them beautifully made clothes that they would immediately ruin. He's a 67-year-old workaholic lawyer many have described as "quite the character, huh?" He takes himself very seriously, though he also can be quite mischievous and loves to stir the pot. His interests include fishing, geopolitics, and monologuing. I truly feel like I've explored all gifting avenues already with him: consumables for his major sweet tooth, outdoorsy gear that he already buys himself, political or economic books that won't lead to arguments (he's conservative, I'm liberal), and seemingly every dog toy or black Labrador art print under the sun. He doesn't drink and mostly sticks to heart-healthy food. While he has many entertaining childhood stories, it seems unlikely he will set aside time for something activity-based like StoryWorth, as he spends most of his at-home free time watching YouTube videos about things like beekeeping (yes, I've gotten him multiple artisanal honeys that had little impact). But for his very first job he worked as a prison counselor. (Cheers S8E26 Cry Harder)2. Perhaps Frasier was inspired by a bizarre chapter in his childhood; Marty used to take him and Niles to the police station and made a game out of locking them in an empty cell. He would then quote unquote “lose” the key. (Frasier S1E15 You Can't Tell a Crook By His Cover)3. Frasiers' operation was impressive from the get go - his office was in a downtown high rise (Cheers S5E24 Cheers the Motion Picture)4. He employed a full time secretary - a Mrs. McGrady, a woman who had been working for Frasier's mother since 1966. (Cheers S4E25 Strange Bedfellows P2)5. That's why he found himself at Golden Brook - a sanatorium in Connecticut (Cheers S3E2 Rebound P2)- in the fateful spring in 1984. He was working there as a consultant.6. Two female patients had a disagreement about a game of croquet and things turned violent. Frasier stepped in and broke it up (Cheers S3E2 Rebound P2)7. Let's travel further back in time to 1889, the year a tavern opened up at 112 1/2 Beacon Street in Boston. (Cheers S8E6 The Stork Brings a Crane)8. She introduced them all to Frasier, and there he met Ernie “Coach” Pantusso, Carla Tortelli, Cliff Clavin, Norm Peterson, and “Mayday” Malone himself. (Cheers S3E1 Rebound P1)9. He began a marital relations group to help his patients navigate their rocky relationships. (Cheers S3E3 I Call Your Name)10. He attended and presented at a prestigious seminar about multiple personalities at the University of Chicago (Cheers S3E4 Fairy Tales Can Come True)11. [He] attended a symposium to discuss nerve endings. (Cheers S3E12 A Ditch In Time)12. But another Crane wasn't at all thrilled about Frasier's choice of lover. In the fall of 1984 Hester visited her son in Boston. (Cheers S3E8 Diane Meets Mom)13. In early 1985, a 32-year old timber heiress was in distress - the gates to her stately home weren't opening. As she banged her fists - and later a tire-iron - against them, Niles - who happened to be driving by - pulled over to assist. When their hands touched they both felt a spark and low and behold, the gates opened. That heiress' name was…Maris. (Frasier S1E17 A Midwinter's Night Dream)14. These two happy couples did meet in Seattle in 1985. (Frasier S3E14 The Show Where Diane Comes Back)15. [NB: Due to file-corruption issues, this episode's sound isn't stellar; apologies for any inconvenience!] For a third-choice star in a first-draft action movie, Dennis Quaid's quite good in 2008's Vantage Point, a fridge-magnet-poetry "thriller" script whose "what if In The Line Of Fire + 24 + Dave gave DQ the adrenaline trots" logline invited multiple weary comparisons to Rashomon in (uniformly negative) reviews. Despite dialogue some film student shook out of the Michael Bay Presents: Boggle cup, a Frogger algorithm used as a car chase, inconsistent blocking, an inert title, and Quaid adopting the wrong posture for a Secret Service agent, we did find a handful of things to enjoy, like William Hurt doing an imitation of that flappy dude outside the car wash while getting shot, and imagining Niles Crane listing budget rental-car models. Nichole Perkins knows the power of pop culture: She has seen how Frasier's Niles Crane inspired her to overcome her own professional hang-ups, how Prince taught her critical lessons about sex, and how Miss Piggy served as both a role model and a cautionary tale about modern femininity. She writes poetically about all of that and more in her essay collection Sometimes I Trip on How Happy We Could Be. Writer and poet Saeed Jones said of the collection: “Hear the dark liquor of her laughter rippling behind her sentences in this magnetic memoir as it explores a journalist's obsession with pop culture and the difficulty of navigating relationships as a Black woman through fanfiction, feminism, and Southern mores.” In this episode we talk to Nichole about why we should take pop culture seriously, how it helps us discuss difficult issues, and why both Niles and Daphne and Kermit and Piggy are kinda messed up. Season 2. Episode 3: Bad Therapy. And here’s the question we want to answer for history: We know that Frasier is the most decorated sitcom in the history of the Emmys. We know that the show was almost flawlessly written and acted. We know that Frasier and Niles Crane were lovable, learned and pretentious. We know so much about the Crane Brothers. But do we even the slightest idea if they were competent psychotherapists? Frasier and Niles were the flaccid superheroes of 1998. From the Elliot Bay Towers they plotted their takeover of Seattle’s upper crust. They obsessed over methods for dating women two to three leagues above them. They chafed at their father’s no frills common sense. They drank countless lattes and even more sherry. Across nearly 270 episodes, Frasier was mostly perfect and always lovable. That being said, great entertainment can obscure deep and dark mysteries, such as: How was a part time, AM radio therapist able to live like a man with generational wealth? Was Frasier Crane more of a ladies’ man than Jerry Seinfeld and Same Malone? Was he secretly the most testosterone addled, alpha male on TV? Most importantly, over eleven seasons, did either Frasier or Niles even once demonstrate basic competency as a therapist or physician? The more we pull at the thread from Niles’ cardigan, the more the Crane brothers’ story unravels. Join Matty Wishnow, Kevin Blake and panelist, Josh Kaufman, as they determine if Niles and Frasier upheld their Hippocratic oath. A very special thank you to Quincy, Matt, Gabe and the Blue Duck team for editing and sound design.

"I don’t know what to do with those tossed salads and scrambled eggs..." Writer, "Thirst Aid Kit" co-host, and Niles Crane super-fan Nichole Perkins joins host Sandy Allen to dissect the immensely popular sitcom, Frasier. They discuss the Crane brothers' complicated relationship to their patients and each other, and whether Dr. Frasier Crane, the radio psychiatrist, needed a psychiatrist of his own. The next episode of #madchatshow will be out in three weeks, but in the meantime, keep chatting with us on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook. And let us know #WhatsHelpingToday! Transcripts available at madchatshow.com. Additional music: “Cupcake Marshall” by Blue Dot Sessions, under an Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 license. SANDY'S NOTES:Read Nichole’s collection of poetry, Lilith, But Dark! Subscribe to her (and Bim Adewunmi’s) podcast, Thirst Aid Kit, which is soon re-launching from Slate! For more about the recent history of the psychiatric profession, I highly recommend Robert Whitaker’s Mad in America (the book that spawned the media organization of the same name, a resource I also highly recommend). It’s also going to be the second Mad Chat Book Club pick! Join me for the discussion on the Mad Chat Instagram Live at 8:30 pm on October 3. Want to send a question or topic for discussion ahead of time? Message us on a social media, or email us at madchatshow@gmail.com. Hope to see you at Mad Chat Book Club. I truly truly love Esther Perel’s podcast Where Should We Begin?. It’s a great way to listen to what great therapy sessions can actually sound like (in this case, couples’ therapy sessions). Nobody has covered the Crane brothers, especially Niles, with as much depth and nuance as Daniel Ortberg at the The Shatner Chatner; I referenced this post analyzing the Crane Brothers as stock clowns. Frasier is a show driven by a laugh track and I was therefore reminded of this excellent episode of 99% Invisible about laugh tracks.

First, some exciting news: we've got Stand Partners for Life T-shirts! Check them out here, and show your Stand Partner love! For this episode, Akiko and I just had a one-word outline: Mahler! And it turns out we had plenty to say about his symphonies. What's it like to learn them, refine them, rehearse them, take them on tour? What do committees look for when you play Mahler? Hear about the time Akiko was mortified to play Mahler 9 with David Hyde Pierce (Frasier's Niles Crane) in the front row! Or the time Nathan got a death stare from Daniel Barenboim during... well, also during Mahler 9! And as to Nathan's comment that Gustav Mahler was perhaps the New York Philharmonic's first music director? He was actually its ninth! Nathan was under the misapprehension that the NY Phil began around the same time as so many other American orchestras, in the early part of the 20th century... in fact, New York got its start in 1848, whereas Mahler wasn't born until 1860! Mahler spent the last two years of his life, 1909-1911, at the helm of the Philharmonic.
