80's Flick Flashback
#136 - "Good Morning Vietnam" (1987) with Nicholas Pepin & Chad Sheppard

80's Flick Flashback

Play Episode Listen Later May 23, 2025 63:30

This episode of 80s Flick Flashback revisits the 1987 hit "Good Morning, Vietnam." The film marked a pivotal moment for Robin Williams, showcasing his dramatic range beyond his established comedic persona from "Mork & Mindy" and "Popeye." Loosely based on the true story of Armed Forces Radio DJ Adrian Cronauer, the movie is set in 1965 Saigon as the Vietnam conflict escalated. Williams' portrayal of the irreverent, rock-music-loving Cronauer, who clashed with superiors, earned him his first Oscar nomination and contributed to the film's significant success. Join Tim Williams, Nicholas Pepin, and Chad Sheppard as they jump in their military jeep, crank up the radio, and discuss this iconic 80s film. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode:In one of his spontaneous news segments, Robin Williams mentions Hanoi Hannah, referring to her as the "wicked witch of the north." Hanoi Hannah was the alias of Trinh Thi Ngo, a female broadcaster from North Vietnam, who gained notoriety on both sides of the conflict for her thrice-daily broadcasts in English that served as propaganda. Although her carefully crafted messages aimed to mock and demoralize American soldiers, many GIs viewed her segments, filled with misused American slang, quirky cultural references, mispronunciations, and exaggerated claims of nonexistent victories, as a source of absurd amusement. At one point, there were plans for a sequel titled "Good Morning Chicago," which would have featured Cronauer as a reporter at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Although a script was written, the proposed sequel was ultimately scrapped.Sources:Wikipedia, IMDB, Box Office Mojohttps://www.cracked.com/article_36357_the-screenwriter-of-good-morning-vietnam-shares-the-inside-story-of-robin-williams-first-dramatic-hit.htmlSome sections were composed by ChatGPT We'd love to hear your thoughts on our podcast! “Mama Mork, Papa Mindy” (November 5, 1981) Thus far, we have not attempted the Happy Days universe of TV shows, and we're starting with this season four Mork & Mindy that has our interspecies marrieds creating a baby that redefine their gender roles. Essentially, Mork hatches an egg from which comes a child that puts a shocked Mindy in the role of father. It's silly, but as returning guest Diamond Feit helps us explain, it's also modelling parenthood outside typical gender conventions. Listen to Diamond's previous episode with us about Ranma 1/2! We just can't stop reviewing "backdoor pilot" episodes of The Facts of Life, so here we go again. This time Blair and Jo are graduating from Eastland, and perhaps this could have led to a spinoff series set at nearby Langley College. It didn't, of course, but it's still a fun two-part episode. We meet several new girls: Alexandra could have been a new Blair-type character at Eastland, while the graduating Emily, Bonnie, and Lisa could have joined a new cast at Langley. (For Lisa, life is a series of shoe problems. She could have become the most psychologically troubled sitcom character since Jan Brady.) We also have Mrs. Garrett juggling dozens of Jello molds and hundreds of pineapples, Roy the creepy bread delivery boy, a bizarre flashback sequence, Tootie seemingly in charge of the whole graduation ceremony, and the trouble with tassels. Also: We wish a Happy Birthday to Mork & Mindy's Pam Dawber, Kevin is on Gleaming the Tube and Earth Station One, and Kornflake is hiding under a giant pile of blankets. Kevin, Kevin, and Mike talking Wonder Woman on Gleaming the Tube! Kevin, Mike, and Mike talking Monkees on Earth Station One! And our regular links... The Flopcast website! The ESO Network! The warning signs were clearly visible in prior defenses of his heavyweight championship. Jimmy Young and Ken Norton could easily have been given decisions against Ali in 1976. A European-level fighter like Alfredo Evangelista could last the distance in May 1977. And power-puncher Earnie Shavers, despite falling short on points, had inflicted 10 fights worth of damage on “The Greatest” over 15 brain-shuddering rounds that September. Ali, who should have been enjoying retirement, needed a very easy fight – enter Leon Spinks. The St. Louis product was a decorated amateur star. He had captured bronze at the World Championships in 1974, silver at the Pan-Am Games in 1975 and gold, as a light heavyweight, at the Montreal Olympics in 1976. Great stats, but, alarmingly, the challenger was bringing a (6-0-1, 5 knockouts) professional record into a heavyweight championship fight. Rick James The Superfreak (@ 30 yrs old): singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, hitmaker, performer, producer, impresario, and pioneer in the fusion of funk groove and rock.  A flamboyant, provocative, charismatic, brilliant, volatile, and outrageous bona fide superstar.    121.    Why is he being featured: Debut solo album, Come Get It!, with hit singles "You and I" & "Mary Jane"   122.    Short Story:  Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, he was one of eight children. His father was abusive and abandoned the family when James was eight. His mother was a former dancer who worked as a housekeeper, but also was a numbers runner. Went to Catholic school and was an altar boy, he also committed petty theft crimes, and spent some time in juvenile detention centers. He also began doing drugs. While James was always musically inclined, it was not until he performed in a talent show in high school that he seriously considered a career in music. He formed a group called the Duprees. At the same time, he joined the Naval Reserve to avoid the draft. As he and his group gained popularity he began to skip out on his naval duties. James was soon drafted, but he fled to Canada.  His uncle was Melvin Franklin of the Temptations. Franklin helped his nephew get a recording contract with Motown Records. This led to James striking a deal with the government and serving some time in prison for draft evasion. After his release, he began to record his first album, which included the hits "You & I," and his ode to marijuana, "Mary Jane." The album sold two million copies.   123.    James's second album, Bustin' Out of L Seven(1979), followed the previous album's success, eventually selling a million copies.   124.    His third album, Fire It Up (1979) and the supporting tour led to James developing a bitter rivalry with one of his opening acts, Prince. Rick accused Prince of ripping off his act.   125.    His fifth album, Street Songs (1981), also proved to be a crossover success. With the Temptations on background vocals, James released "Super Freak."    126.    With the success of "Super Freak," James began to produce for other artists. He formed an all-girl band named the Mary Jane Girls. He also performed duets with R&B singer Teena Marie and Smokey Robinson. He also produced comedian Eddie Murphy's "Party All The Time," which was a hit in the mid-1980s.   127.    James' on-stage persona was one of wild debauchery. Dressed in sequins, tight leather, high-heeled boots, and cornrows or a jheri curl, James oozed sex on stage. Offstage, he smoked marijuana and snorted cocaine. According to the Washington Post, he told the Detroit News in 2004, "The biggest mistake I made is that I tried to become my alter ego. I wanted to be Rick James, wild man, party machine, lady slayer, and the cocaine told me I could. I forgot that I was James Johnson, a nerdy kid who grew up reading Dante's Inferno on Saturday nights."   128.    James' spiral out of control came to a head when he was charged with assault in 1991. He was convicted in 1993 and served three years. He vowed to get clean and live a more sedate life. Upon his release, he married and began having serious health problems.  James was found dead on August 6, 2004; he was 56.  His death was ruled accidental, but nine drugs were found in his system. However, the official cause of death was a heart attack.   129.    Open Comments:   130.    Movie Scene   131.    The Wiz: A musical adventure fantasy film based upon characters from “The Wizard of OZ” featuring an all-black cast, the film was loosely adapted from the 1974 Broadway musical of the same name. It follows the adventures of Dorothy, a shy, twenty-four-year-old Harlem schoolteacher who finds herself magically transported to the urban fantasy Land of Oz, which resembles a dream version of New York City. Befriended by a Scarecrow, a Tin Man and a Cowardly Lion, she travels through the city to seek an audience with the mysterious Wiz, who they say is the only one powerful enough to send her home.   132.    Various reviews: "...Diana Ross, too old to play Dorothy." and ...portrayal of Dorothy was "cold, neurotic and oddly unattractive" / "...cockamamy screenplay" / “the picture finished off Diana Ross's screen career" / "The Wiz was too scary for children, and too silly for adults." / Ray Bolger, who played the Scarecrow in the 1939 The Wizard of Oz film, did not think highly of The Wiz, stating "The Wiz is overblown and will never have the universal appeal that the classic MGM musical has obtained."   133.    Sean Munger - seanmunger.com "...But, despite the fact that it was a bad movie–and it clearly is–there’s a lot of very interesting stuff about The Wiz lurking under the surface. You can make an argument that its failure ended not one but two eras in cinema: the era of the glitzy big-budget musical, and that of what is known, not entirely politically correctly (these days), as the “Blacksploitation” boom. The Wiz also began a professional association between two of its participants that had an effect on popular culture of almost inestimable magnitude: the musical pairing of Michael Jackson and songwriter/producer Quincy Jones."   134.    Open Comments:   135.    TV Scene   136.    Maxie Cleveland "Max" Robinson, Jr. (@39yrs old): American broadcast journalist and founder of the National Association of Black Journalists   137.    Robinson’s first journalism job began and ended in 1959, when he was hired to read news at a Portsmouth, Va., television station. Although the station selected him over an otherwise all-white group of applicants, it still enforced a color barrier by projecting an image of the station’s logo to conceal Robinson as he read the news. He was fired the day after he presented the news without the logo obscuring his face. In 1965 he joined WTOP-TV in Washington, D.C., as a correspondent and camera operator, but he moved quickly to nearby WRC-TV, where he won awards for coverage of race riots and a documentary on life in poor urban neighborhoods. He was hired back by WTOP as its first African American news anchor in 1969 and stayed there until 1978. Robinson moved to Chicago when ABC News chose him as one of three co-anchors for ABC’s World News Tonight. The anchor arrangement ended with the death of co-anchor Frank Reynolds in 1983. Robinson left ABC News shortly thereafter and joined Chicago’s WMAQ-TV as a news anchor (1984–87).   138.    Clarence Page offered a final tribute to his friend Max Robinson in Chicago: "Some journalists are remembered for the stories they covered. Robinson will be remembered for being the story. Like Jackie Robinson, who broke baseball's color bar in 1947, Max Robinson won't be applauded for his home runs, but for the fact that he ran the bases."   139.    Open Comments:   140.    Final Question: Biggest legacy from 1978?

Robin Williams had a knack for playing the one person that no one else in the world could understand. From his bizarre beginnings as an alien on the sitcom “Mork & Mindy” to his kooky portrayal of real-life doctor “Patch Adams”, Robbins had the ability to capture what it was about us that felt weird and unique. The 1996 film “Jack” is no exception. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the silly film –written by the man now responsible for “The Purge” franchise– follows a ten-year-old struggling with a genetic disorder that makes him appear to look four times his age. The hosts discuss appearances by JLo and Diane Lane as well as Robin's performance. An impossible premise masquerading as a feel-good hit, the hosts question whether “Jack” is instead one of the darkest existentialist films in recent decades.   Follow The Shiterion Collection!   Instagram: @ShiterionCollection   Twitter: @Shiterion_Pod   Facebook: facebook.com/theshiterioncollection   Email us theshiterioncollection@gmail.com.   You can find Kate Santos online @ocleoo on Insta and @funny_cat_gifs on Twitter.   Stevie Anderson is rolling as @spaghetti_witch on IG and @spaghetti_witch on Twitter.   Theme song by Honor Nezzo @nezzzie

For this week's episode, I sat down with Jonathan Katz in his home in Newton, Massachusetts to talk about his career in stand-up comedy and Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist, his popular Comedy Central show which is now an audio series on Audible. Season Two of the new incarnation is coming up this summer, and Katz gives the complete rundown of new guests, plus a preview of what's happening with Dr. Katz, his son Ben, played by H. Jon Benjamin, and his receptionist, Laura, played by Laura Silverman. A few years ago, I had the opportunity to interview Jonathan and his partner in Dr. Katz, Tom Snyder, about how they originally pitched Dr. Katz to Comedy Central. The story was, they were both new to television at the time, but stuck to their vision for the show, which turned out to be the best thing that could have happened. A lot of that story never made it to print, so I'm glad to have it on the record here. You can check out my interview with Snyder way back in EP10 of the podcast. We also spoke about Katz's early experiences touring with Robin Williams. It's a strange bit of Katz's history. He was Williams's musical director, writing songs for the act and playing guitar onstage. One of those songs was “This Heart Is Closed for Alterations,” co-written with Katz's college buddy from Goddard, David Mamet. If that's not an intriguing enough mix, Williams once performed that song on Mork & Mindy with his opening act, The Rick and Ruby Show. Toward the end of the conversation, we also spoke about Multiple Sclerosis, how that has affected his performing, and one way he'd like to connect with the MS community. I also inadvertently ruin a great joke in that segment. My apologies to Jonathan. You can keep up with Jonathan's work on his Website at JonathanKAtz.com, and look for new episodes of Dr. Katz: The Audio Files on Audible later this summer. The featured track this week comes from Matt Dorrien off his new album, Songs In the Key of Grey on Mama Bird Recording Co. I'm always impressed by anyone who can write songs in a classic, American Songbook style and do it well. Plenty of people try, and plenty of people slog through the classics and it sounds perfunctory at best or schlocky at worst. But there are people like Randy Newman and Joe Henry who can write songs that sound both timeless and modern. And that's the territory Dorrien works. The song I'm about to play is an obvious example of that. It's called “Dayton Ohio, 1983.” If that title sounds familiar to you, you might be thinking of the Randy Newman song, “Dayton Ohio, 1903" from his 1972 album Sail Away. In Newman's vision, Dayton is a quaint, quiet town where people are nice to each other, sitting for Sunday tea. In Dorrien's update, the narrator is a kid who grew up in Dayton and finds it quiet. And boring. He dreams of moving out to LA and having a fling with a dancer. And maybe getting into a little bit, or a lot of trouble. Listen to the song on the podcast, then head back hear and listen to Newman's vision of Dayton. Find out more about Dorrien at MattDorrien.com and Mama Bird Recording Co. at MamaBirdRecordingCo.com.

I cover the whole spectrum of boundaries—from boundary-less to walled off, including what boundaries look like when they’re in balance. Plus, I’ll talk about the difference between boundary ruptures and boundary violations and give plenty examples of each. Boundary ruptures and boundary violations can be traumatic, and in future episodes, I’ll be going into detail about how to respond when someone breaks an agreement with you or violates a boundary. Biggest Takeaways From Episode #3: To understand boundaries in balance and at the extremes, picture a straight line between two extremes of a boundaries continuum. One extreme is being behind a wall where you’re not available either physically, sexually, or emotionally. At the other extreme a person has no boundaries, is too vulnerable, or may have no boundaries with other people. In between the two extremes, there is a healthy middle. When your boundaries are in balance, you feel protected, you protect other people from your own boundary-less behavior, while at the same time being vulnerable. Your boundaries are strongly influenced by the culture you grew up in as well as what you learned from your family growing up. Cultural norms for boundaries aren’t necessarily good or bad; however, you get to decide what boundaries feel right for you. What is the difference between a boundary rupture and a boundary violation? Knowing the difference will help you figure out how you want to respond. In today’s episode I cover the whole spectrum of boundaries—from boundary-less to walled off, including what boundaries look like when they’re in balance. Plus, I’ll talk about the difference between boundary ruptures and boundary violations and give plenty examples of each. Boundary ruptures and boundary violations can be traumatic, and in future episodes I’ll be going into detail about how to respond when someone breaks an agreement with you or violates a boundary.  Highlights from Episode #3: In This Episode: What boundaries look like when they’re out of balance. Listen as they breakdown the first regular episode entitled "May The Source Be With You", a terribly written parody of Star Wars. They'll discuss the interesting cast, from the director of The Money Pit, Richard Benjamin, and the dad from Mork & Mindy, Conrad Janis, to the former Doublemint Twins, Cyb and Patricia Barnstable, and the, um, cerebral Allan Caillou. They'll talk lots about what made this show cheesy, offensive, and boring, and why Andy the Android is probably the crappiest robot in all of science fiction. Are the evil "Gorgons" simply people in purple clothes being led around in a giant head by Chevy Chase in a Darth Vader helmet? Why power a spaceship with a glowing egg in a lava room with a monster splashing around in a kiddie pool? Can a plant look like a man? Do gamma rays tickle? He did the voice of Young Tod for the charming animated Disney picture The Fox and the Hound. His first on-screen role was as the smitten Brad Anderson in the delightful teen comedy cult favorite Adventures in Babysitting. He gave a very funny and engaging performance as Christina Applegate's stoner layabout brother Kenny in the equally enjoyable Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead and was impressive as Jonathan Snuffy Bradberry in Toy Soldiers. Among the television programs Coogan has made guest appearances on are The Love Boat, Eight Is Enough, Mork & Mindy, Knight Rider, CHiPS, Starman, 21 Jumpstreet and Tales from the Crypt.

Where Hollywood Hides: Television | Movies | Music | Show Business | Writing | Producing | Directing | Acting

Philip Taylor has a unique show business history and track record. In this podcast interview, he describes his journey from a childhood in rural England to Hollywood sound stages, with dozens of writing and producing credits on some of TV’s most memorable hit shows. Taylor talks about his years of studying at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, and recalls the thrill of performing Shakespeare on the international stage.  He then shares his experience “being in the right place at the right time”, and how he began writing scripts for hit TV shows. Not many TV writers have the ability to move between comedy and dramatic genres, but Philip has multiple  credits on both sides of the fence.   He’s written for shows as varied as . “Mork & Mindy”, “Murder, She Wrote”, “Eight is Enough”, “CPO Sharkey”, “Good Times”, and “Knight Rider”, demonstrating an unusual ability to move between half-hour sitcoms, hour dramas, two-hour longform TV movies, and feature films.  With great humor and plenty of behind-the-scenes details, Philip tells Bob and Suzanne how he wrote the cult movie classic “Lust in the Dust”, starring Tab Hunter and the legendary Divine. He then describes his four-year stint writing for “The New Zorro” (and acting in an episode on location in Spain), which he quickly followed with multiple scripts for “Highlander” and for Jerry Bruckheimer’s first TV series, “Soldier of Fortune, Inc.” Now teaching film and television writing at Arizona State University, Philip candidly shares tips that have helped many of his students break into the Hollywood mainstream.   If you’ve got your sights set on writing for movies or TV, this conversation with Philip Taylor is “required listening”.

Anchor: Multiple award winning comedian and actor Robin Williams died on Monday in an apparent suicide. For decades, he has dazzled audiences on screen, on stage and in front of a mic. Xiong Siqi takes a look at his illustrious career. Reporter: Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams was found dead at his home in California. According to the sheriff's office in Marin County, north of San Francisco, a preliminary investigation shows the death was a suicide due to asphyxia, but the cause of death is still under investigation. He was 63. Williams' wife Susan Schneider said in a statement that ‘this morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken.” Williams, who won an Academy Award for his role as a fatherly therapist in 1997's “Good Will Hunting,” had been suffering from severe depression recently and entered a rehabilitation center to help him maintain sobriety. Williams said on leaving rehab. “I'm doing great. I want to thank the millions and the thousands and also the people that have come up in person and thank them for all their support. It's been loving. It's been wonderful to know I'm not alone. That's the main thing. When you come out of rehab. If you know that then you've got a great shot." At the premiere of the new film “The Giver”, veteran director Phillip Noyce said he had met Williams a few times and called him one of the greatest comedians of all time. “He made us laugh deep down in our hearts, in our minds, ever part of our bodies. He made us laugh silly laughs and he made us laugh very, very, very, very complex laughs because he was so intelligent. He was a force of nature and also he was an extraordinary actor. His performance in Dead Poets Society is unrivaled.” Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Robin Williams' daughter on TV series ‘The Crazy Ones', said he is one of the kindest human beings. "I've been doing this 32 years and this is the most fun I have ever had on a job. I could talk about Robin Williams, do you have an hour? If I talked about of him the way I want to people would think I made him up. I mean you have this man who is truly one of the top 10 greatest all-time standup comics ever and he's also a Julliard trained, Academy award-winning actor. He's also one of the kindest human beings I've ever met." President Barack Obama also sent statement from the White House by saying "Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan, and everything in between. But he was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien -- but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit. He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most -- from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalized on our own streets." But Williams' impact is universal. Here is Cheng Juan, a Chinese film maker. "I am utterly shocked to learn that he is dead. As a filmmaker and artist, I absolutely salute to his achievement in art. He is an absolutely comic genius, academy award-winning actor. I am profoundly sad that he is gone.” There was no denying Robin William is a raw comedy genius. He first became famous by introducing his frenetic style on late 1970s TV series “Mork & Mindy”. And over the 35 year course of his career, he would go on to display an astonishing and captivating versatility which made him one of Hollywood's best loved actors. He won three Golden Globes, for “Good Morning, Vietnam,” “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “The Fisher King.” Following the end of Mork in 1982, Williams found his background in stand-up comedy useful for his film career. In 1987, his performance in movie Good Morning Vietnam earned him his first Best Actor Oscar nomination. In the movie, Williams often deviated from the script during his DJ character's radio broadcasts, with his energetic improvisation lending a comical energy to the film. And his role as the inspirational English teacher in Dead Poet's Society won him another Best Actor Oscar nomination. His line “Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary” has inspired many young people to chase their dreams. But it was his more dramatic portrayal of a fatherly therapist in the 1997 film, Good Will Hunting that earned him an Academy Award as the Best Supporting Actor. Besides excellent performance on the screen, his “Robin Williams – Live 2002” also won a Grammy in 2003 for best spoken comedy album. Born in Chicago in 1951, this comedy genius would remember himself as a timid kid who got some early laughs from his mother - by mimicking his grandmother. But it wasn't until high school that his unique sense of humor helped him overcome his shyness. He was accepted into the prestigious Juilliard Academy on a full scholarship in 1973. When asked if heaven exists, what he would like to hear God say when he arrived at the pearly gates, Williams said. “There's seating near the front. The concert begins at 5. It will be Mozart, Elvis and one of your choosing. Or it would be nice, if heaven exists, to know there's laughter. It would be a great thing just to hear God go “two Jews walk into a bar.” Robin Williams had the rare ability to invoke both tears of laughter and sadness in his audiences. Even though he's no longer with us, let's hope he's laughing with the stars in heaven! For Studio+, I'm Xiong Siqi.
