Born in Montego Bay, Jamaica, I spent my youth there before migrating to Pennsylvania in 2000. It was in the vibrant artistic environment of Philadelphia that I found inspiration in street art and historical murals. My art journey began during my time at Springfield High School, where I explored multiple mediums and discovered the joy of creating through various projects. After a brief hiatus, I rediscovered my love for art in 2008, particularly using oil-based medium, which reignited my creative energy. Each body of my work draws inspiration from both history and everyday experiences, crafted to evoke subjective interpretations in the viewer. I firmly believe that art is universal and shaped by each individual's life journey. As an introspective figurative artist, I incorporate natural motifs and floral fabric patterns to express communication and determination in the figures' pursuit of a better life. Each stroke of paint exudes boldness, confidence, and strength, aiming to inspire those who encounter my art. I draw inspiration from a multitude of artists, including Dali, Kevin Williams, Charly Palmer, David Hockney, Basquiat, and Amy Sherald, while also embracing techniques from different eras, like gold leaf and textures. Since moving to Atlanta, Georgia, in 2018, I have become actively engaged in the local art community, showcasing my work in various galleries, such as Mint Gallery and Future Dead Artist Gallery. Notably, in 2022, I was featured in an Exhibition sponsored by Amazon Prime during Art Basel Miami. My ultimate goal is to touch hearts and minds with my art, leaving a lasting positive impression on fellow art enthusiasts and inspiring others to express their own passion and creativity. In this episode of the ArtTactic Podcast, our host Adam Green is joined by Kabir Jhala, Art Market Editor at The Art Newspaper, to recap this year's edition of Art Basel Miami Beach. We explore how Trump's re-election is shaping gallery expectations and the art market's trajectory, including differing reactions from collectors and dealers at the fair. Kabir also shares insights on the potential impact of tariffs on the U.S. art market, drawing comparisons to the rising costs and challenges faced by the UK art market post-Brexit. We discuss the overall mood heading into the fair and how things ultimately played out, from standout artworks to the broader trends and themes that defined this year's presentations. With the fair taking place in December at the end of a packed art calendar, we consider whether collector fatigue or earlier buying opportunities might affect attendance and sales. Finally, we reflect on Miami's role as the final major test for the art market this year and what insiders are anticipating as we look ahead to 2025.

First, Sarah shares what the mood was like at the fair this year and explains why everyone was asking about it during the fair. Then, she identifies some of the most noteworthy sales at this year's edition of the fair as well as some of the aesthetic trends relating to the art on view. Also, Sarah addresses if Art Basel Miami occurring at the end of the year is having a negative impact on the fair. Lastly, she reveals how market participants are feeling heading into 2024.
Is conventional wisdom shifting? Many believe art fairs and artists shouldn't mix. One artist described it to me as watching your parents have sex. It's not something artists want to do! But not everyone agrees. In this episode I speak to artist Mark Joshua Epstein about his experience at the Miami art fairs and why he believes the stigma associated with artists who attend without exhibiting their work has changed. He got a lot out of his visit, and shares what he gained, who he thinks will benefit, and when it won't help you. And he shares plenty of insider tips to help you if you decide to go! Ona meets OONA, as Leah gets to know the anonymous artist's ideas on the value of female artists, applying the tenets of cryptocurrency to fine art, wallet washing, manipulating social value, faceless performance art, CCTV's complicity in the male gaze, misgendering, and the innocence (or not) of lambs being led to slaughter in the era of social media. About OONA. OONA doesn't really exist, but she takes herself very seriously, so you should too. OONA is an anonymous conceptual artist whose practice explores the intersections of technology, finance, gender, and identity. Through moving image and performance art, OONA exposes the collision between progressive technologies and socially regressive ideas, offering a critical perspective on the contemporary cultural landscape. OONA was born on November 1st, 2021 in the Holy See. She has exhibited her works internationally at prestigious venues, including Art Basel Miami 2022, the Metropolitan Museum of New York, Proof of People London, Proof of People New York, and Avalanche Summit Barcelona. OONA's performances and exhibitions have garnered critical acclaim and attention from collectors and curators. In this very special episode, I interview my sister on how she went from a depressed college grad working a corporate job she hated to getting her art seen globally practically overnight. Alyssa goes into great detail on what energetic shifting and manifestation tools and techniques she used to do this, and I also intuitively channeled some things that she did to make this happen for herself. In this unscripted conversation, you'll hear advice from both of us on how you can take full responsibility for your current situation and completely shift your life to live a life you love (internally & externally). Be sure to check out more on Alyssa below, and where to reach her! Alyssa Stevens is a 25 year old full-time 1/1 artist in the NFT space. Creating art has always been an integral part of Alyssa's life, but she never thought she could make a career out of it. She graduated from Bentley University with a degree in Marketing in 2020 and was soon immersed in the corporate world, working in social media advertising at a media agency in Boston. Alyssa continued making art and soon entered the NFT space, spending her free time researching NFTs and Web 3.In March 2022, Alyssa's life changed overnight. Her artwork was featured on the homepage of OpenSea, the largest and most well-known NFT marketplace. Within two days, her collection Interconnected Planes, which consists of over 100 1/1's, sold out; pieces from the collection continued to sell on the secondary market. One month later, Alyssa decided to quit her corporate job and focus full-time on her art and Web 3.Since then, Alyssa's artwork has also been exhibited at NFT NYC (2x), NFT London, NFT Bali, and on Shillr's digital van during Art Basel Miami. She also led a panel at NFT NYC 2023 centered around the role of NFT tech in shifting the narrative around artists. Today, a studio visit with collage artist Judy Bowman. In less than a decade, Bowman's bright, textured collages have gained a national audience and collector base. She's shown her art in New York, at Art Basel Miami, and her first solo exhibition, called “Gratiot Griot,” is currently wrapping up at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. But despite her national fame, Bowman is, admittedly, a homebody. Her home is her studio. She lives and works in Romulus, and her artwork prominently features the scenes and people of her childhood in Detroit's Black Bottom and Eastside. ___ Looking for more conversations from Stateside? Teresa Melvin, a 13-year-old NFT artist. Her passion has always been making art; "it's how I draw, animate, and create stories with my two bubbly characters, AVA & Ramona. I observed the people around me, like my family, teachers, and friends, and drew them in my made-up stories when I was little." Two of her all-time favorite characters she created are Ava and Ramona. Ava loves donuts, and she is a go-getter! She created her when she was ten years old because she wanted a character that reflects her personality. Her best friend, Ramona, is a bold, confident, and very active person who is crazy about skateboarding. She chose to follow the beat of her own drum, and she was born a year later because she decided to make up a character she wanted to be like, and do things she's never done in her life! Teresa started her NFT journey in August of 2021. Her two characters and she was introduced to the great big world of NFTs. Since then, she sold 60+ artworks on Opensea, Foundation, and Wazirx marketplaces. Teresa is a Speaker at NFT NYC, Miami NFT Week, Sandeigo NFT Conference. Her works are exhibited in Supermintnft LA 2022, Dubai Expo 2021, NFT.NYC 2021, Art Basel Miami 2021. She was awarded Epic Drop of the Week by Kids on the Blockchain magazine and was a youth artist winner from Give4Kidz. Her interviews are in some print magazines, and she's done some live interviews on Instagram & youtube. Teresa can connect with many artists and art lovers through the language of art. So art has become an integral part of her life. She is a part of a fantastic art community led by NFT Kids Magazine. She got an excellent opportunity to design the logo for the magazine and she feels so proud to see that every time. Her purpose as an artist is to create, learn, share, and inspire young artists to exhibit their talent. https://Art2Life.com - At the beginning of making something, the artist is the fixed, central point that everything is organized around. It seems it can't be any other way. You are a singular artist doing something, chasing something to make something new. Often it falls flat but sometimes, a few sneak through. A couple of them are good. Maybe even for a short time, great. Interestingly, good art always seems to have a bit more authenticity. It's yours, but also theirs as well. In other words, the authenticity of the human experience seems to be the currency we all embrace. We all can relate to it. As the artist, we begin thinking the work is all about us. How could it be otherwise? Yet somehow, in the process of making, sharing, and showing our work, it becomes clear that others can find themselves in our art too. It no longer becomes solely about you. It is out of your hands and goes off into the world without even looking back. Of course, this is rarely the case for most art made. First, it has to be exceptionally authentic. It has to be poignant and stirring. It has to be unforgettable. Edward Povey, a British painter whose work can loosely be described as emotional realism, happens to be all three. Join me now for an incredibly candid, moving, and thoughtful conversation.
