Have you ever wondered how to understand plants on a deeper level, beyond “This herb is good for that thing?” If so, you won't want to skip this post! I am excited to be joined today by my colleague, friend, and teacher, Pam Montgomery. Pam is an herbalist, author, international teacher, earth elder, and new paradigm thinker who passionately embraces her role as a spokesperson for the green beings. She has investigated plants and their intelligent spiritual nature for over three decades. Pam is the author of Co-Creating with Nature: Healing the Wound of Separation and the highly acclaimed Plant Spirit Healing: A Guide to Working With Plant Consciousness. She teaches internationally and virtually on plant initiations, spiritual ecology, and co-creative partnership with nature. Pam founded the Organization of Nature Evolutionaries (ONE) and served as a founding board member of the United Plant Savers. I first met Pam when I was in my early twenties, and she has been an instrumental teacher for me on my plant path, providing valuable guidance, knowledge, and wisdom about plants. I'm happy to share her wisdom with you. Here's what you'll learn from our conversation: What does being in a co-creative partnership with nature mean, and how do we get into it? How do we differentiate between a plant communicating with us vs. our own thoughts? What are plant initiations, and what can we learn from them? Have you ever felt overwhelmed trying to learn herbal medicine and astrology? This is one of the biggest challenges I hear from people studying herbalism on its own… throw astrology on top of it, and it just seems like too much. They say, “I was already overwhelmed trying to learn how to become a great herbalist. And now, to practice this way, I have to learn the massive system of astrology too. I'm busy with my day job, family, home, and garden, and it's too much.” But it doesn't have to be that way! There is a strategic approach that allows you to study herbal medicine and astrology at the same time. The philosophical bases of both herbal medicine and astrology are, at their core, one and the same- for they are built off the same fundamental blueprint of nature. When you study these fundamental principles and patterns of astrology and herbalism simultaneously, it enhances your learning of both systems, making it quicker to learn them and thus incorporate them into your work with people. This is what I call the Zodiacal Study Strategy. It is a model for study that you can incorporate into the time you have available—or rather the time you create—to optimize your learning process of both herbalism and astrology. It is built on the similarities between the philosophical foundations of holistic herbalism and astrology, or what I think of as the architecture of the zodiac. As with anything worth learning, you must make time to study, integrate, and practice. Unfortunately, it won't magically appear. What differentiates a good herbalist or astrologer from a great one is discipline and consistency in studying and gaining experience. And it's about using your time strategically. What follows is one year's worth of study. By the end of that year, you will have a solid foundation in both astrological medicine and clinical herbal medicine. ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/ Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/ ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. The premise of cleansing is popular in alternative medicine circles, seen as one of the most important ways to get and stay healthy. But is it really? Is our modern take on cleansing the same as it was traditionally? And most importantly, is cleansing really appropriate for anyone and everyone? We'll cover all that and more in our exploration of the spring cleanse. Here's what I'll cover: What happens in the spring transition that necessitates a cleanse? The qualities that predominate in winter and what that means for you The equinox transitions and how patterns in nature affect your health What to focus on in a spring cleanse Herbal categories in the spring cleanse: alteratives, nutritives and why they're important Is a spring cleanse appropriate? Have you ever wondered how science views medical astrology or whether it has been proven "true?" Should we consider astrology a valid tool for understanding health, or is it just pseudoscience? Astrological medicine is a central part of our approach to herbal medicine here at The School of Evolutionary Herbalism, so it's a topic we discuss regularly. Today, we're breaking down medical astrology's relationship to scientific and pragmatic truth and proof, and what really matters. Here's what you'll find in this episode: The goal of the tools we use—what matters most? What is scientific proof? Can astrology be proven scientifically, and does it matter? Most traditions of herbal medicine across the world use the fundamental principle of antipathetic medicine in their approach to therapeutics. But in the practice of alchemical medicine—based on Paracelsianism— and in astro-herbalism, another approach is commonly used: sympathetic medicine. In this episode, we'll explore some of the principles of sympathetic medicine, how it differs from the antipathetic approach, and how we can work with it to deepen our understanding of plant to planet correspondences. Here's an overview of what you'll learn: The key differences between sympathetic and antipathetic medicine How to think through planetary correspondences in plants and more importantly, in practice The various layers of herbal sympathy to planets such as organ affinities, energetics, and herbal actions How herbs can paradoxically embody both sympathetic AND antipathetic qualities to a singular planetary force Refining clinical application through the Triune System Warning: this is a slightly more advanced discussion relating to astro-herbalism and planetary correspondences in plants. In medical astrology, astral polarities offer profound insights into the body's interconnected systems, revealing hidden relationships between organ functions and celestial archetypes. By studying opposing zodiac signs, we gain a deeper understanding of how the various parts of the body interact. This perspective aligns with holistic traditions like Ayurveda, which recognize the dynamic interplay between organs, emotions, and physiological processes. Each axis in astrology represents a functional system within the body rather than isolated structures. These polarities provide a framework for understanding health imbalances and how bodily systems influence one another. In this episode, I'll delve into the intersection of astrology, herbalism, and organ systems. Here's a quick overview of what you'll learn: Understanding Astral Polarities – Explore the six axes that govern bodily functions and how opposite signs create dynamic physiological relationships in the body Interconnected Organ Systems – Insights into how astrology reveals hidden relationships between the organ systems Astrology & Herbalism – How medical astrology enhances our ability to assess health imbalances and create effective solutions. Practical Applications – Using astrological insights to identify root causes of health issues and support holistic healing. There's something about winter that makes us want to bundle up and get warm. And while many of us do this with sweaters, a beanie, and thick wool socks, there's another critical way we stay warm: Through the herbs and food we eat. In many herbal traditions, plants are often split into warming or cooling. A cooling herb might be great in summer, but it can leave you feeling off-balance during the cold winter months. That's why it's important to turn to warming herbs and spices that heat us up from the inside out. By doing this, we not only stay warmer, but we also come a little bit closer to living in harmony with nature's cycles. In today's episode, you'll learn: How living in harmony with the seasons connects us with nature Why using warming herbs keeps us balanced, vital, and healthy during winter The main actions, energetics, and affinities of warming herbs How to use simple warming spices you already have at home My favorite recipes for warming teas, herbal lattes, and even a few cocktails ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/ Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/ ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. If you walk into a hip smoothie shop or health food store, you'll undoubtedly be flooded with the newest “superfoods” and cure-all herbs. Like so many things in our modern culture, herbal medicine also has its own “fads,” as it seems as if there's almost a new one in style each season. Although it may seem harmless at first and they may be a good gateway into the realm of herbal medicine, herbal fads may not necessarily be a good thing. Most of the time, they're promoted by big supplement companies looking to inflate their bottom line, even if the truth is a bit fudged to get there (or even flat-out lies!). By learning about the danger of herbal fads, you can become a more conscious consumer and herbalist and know how to navigate this sometimes confusing territory. In today's blog post you'll learn: Who's behind herbal fads and how they're born in the market How herbal fads hurt the credibility of herbalism and pigeonhole herbs The ecological and cultural damage herbal fads can cause Ways companies lie about herbs and how they can hurt you Why herbal fads can change the way you think about herbs without even realizing it ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/ Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/ ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. Have you ever felt anxious about giving herbs to someone who's already taking medications? Many herbalists feel hesitant to help people taking prescribed drugs because of concerns about herb-drug interactions. But how much do we really need to worry about this? Herbs can impact how drugs are absorbed and metabolized, which can actually be helpful at times, but very risky at other times. By understanding how herbs and drugs interact, you can feel confident in providing your clients with the care they need, even if they're taking medications. In this week's podcast, Sajah speaks with Jesse Wolfe Hardin, an herbalist and environmental renaissance man. The author of over 25 books, Jesse Wolf has taught anima life practices for decades and was the first to coin the term rewilding. Jesse is the co-founder of the International Good Medicine Confluence Gathering, the digital magazine for herbalist healers and folklorists, Plant Healer Quarterly, and the co-creator of the Revealing Hedge Guild Oracle Guide. Today's conversation takes place with Jesse in a remote river canyon, deeply nestled in the wild lands of New Mexico. In this heart-to-heart conversation, Jesse talks about how the Earth is intelligent, living, sentient, and is constantly evolving, adapting, and healing itself. In that process, it offers us a model for our own healing and evolution. When we connect with the Earth and work with its plants and rhythms, we tap into that deep intelligence and allow it to guide us on our path to wholeness. What's so powerful about herbal medicine is that it's not just about fixing a symptom or addressing a single ailment. It's about engaging in a relationship with the plants, with the land, and with ourselves. It's about recognizing that our health is interconnected with the health of the Earth and that by healing ourselves, we also contribute to the healing of the planet. As we explore and deepen our understanding of herbal medicine, we need to remember that it's not just about the plants themselves, but about the relationships we cultivate with them and how they help us to reconnect with the living Earth. It's about fostering a sense of reverence and gratitude for the natural world and allowing that to inspire us to live more harmoniously with it. In this way, herbal medicine becomes a spiritual practice, a way of life that fosters a deeper connection to the natural world and a greater sense of belonging. It reminds us that we are not separate from nature, but an integral part of it. In that recognition, we find a sense of purpose and a path to true wellness. In today's episode you'll learn: The importance of creating roots in life, and how grounding in a physical location opens your world to forming deeper connections to your local environment Everyone has a gift and a calling in the world, and advice for how you can find yours How approaching nature with curiosity, wonder, and an open mind rather than an agenda helps you to better learn from it Why it's so important to heed your personal calling and life mission in the context of herbalism The satisfaction that comes from being a heart-driven herbalist and how each herbalist forges their own unique path unlike anyone else's Learn more about Jesse Wolf Hardin here: https://planthealerbookstore.com/about https://www.goodmedicineconfluence.com/ https://www.instagram.com/planthealer/ ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/ Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/ ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. Meadowsweet is often thought of as herbal aspirin. Even though it's no secret that its compounds were originally used to formulate and synthesize aspirin, can you really use it in the same way? If you want to get the same results from Meadowsweet as aspirin, you would have to drink quarts of the tea, which is tough to do because it's incredibly bitter. Not only would you be feeling pretty nauseous by the end, but you would also only get the strength of a baby aspirin, if you're lucky! Even though Meadowsweet contains aspirin-like compounds, they are not the same. Meadowsweet is an herb used for centuries, and although it has many traditional uses, its applications are more relevant than ever in our modern day. In today's episode, you'll discover: Meadowsweet's bitter and astringent taste and why this combination is so good for treating ulcers How Meadowsweet alleviates heartburn, ulcers in the GI, joint pain, and more with its energetic and biochemical properties Why Meadowsweet is helpful for so many modern-day issues that didn't use to exist Meadowsweet's powerful connection with Saturn and how it balances other planetary influences ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/ Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/ ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine.
