Racing has seen few more distinguished careers than the one enjoyed by Ron Quinton over six rewarding decades. His stellar riding career spanned almost thirty years. His successful training career is now in its thirty second year and counting. Ron's an inductee of the Australian Racing Hall Of Fame and the recipient of a Medal Of The Order Of Australia, fitting acknowledgements of his contribution to Australian racing. I've conducted interviews with Ron Quinton many times over sixty years and there was a comprehensive podcast in 2018, but several recent email requests for an updated version have got us on the job. It's a pleasure to revisit the career of an iconic Australian horseman. His passion for the game is unwavering. His recall of horses, horsemen and events will take you on a nostalgic journey. Ron admits he's a disciplined trainer who never takes his eye off the ball. The seventy seven year old acknowledges the support of long time client Ray Gall who's rarely without a horse or two in the stable. Ron remembers the first yearling Ray gave him to train. That filly was Mamzelle Pedrille who remains the trainer's all time favourite. Ron pays tribute to his first Gr 1 winner. His magic moment came on the opening day of the famous Melbourne Cup carnival in the year 2000. He looks back on another unforgettable day at Flemington when he won the historic Victoria Oaks with Bulla Borghese- his second Gr 1 as a trainer. Ron has had a commanding presence in the history of the Coolmore Classic run at Rosehill during the Golden Slipper carnival. He won it twice as a jockey and four times as trainer. He looks back on his quartet of training wins beginning with classy mare Ofcourseican. He remembers Peeping, Daysee Doom and Dixie Blossoms who all won the high profile race. The veteran horseman looks back on his association with the respected owner Millie Fox. He was recommended for the job by Brian Mayfield-Smith who'd decided to explore the possibility of becoming a conservationist in South Africa. Ron looks back on the best of the 95 winners he trained in four years for the universally popular Mrs.Millie Fox. He pays tribute to the lengthy list of talented junior riders who spent all or part of their apprenticeships under his wing. Ron looks back on his twenty years as stable jockey for legendary trainer Neville Begg. He speaks of Begg's affinity with fillies and mares. He goes back to childhood days at Mendooran in the Central West and early days in the saddle. Ron pays tribute to his master and mentor Theo Green. He looks back on a rewarding apprenticeship and the wonderful opportunities afforded him by leading stables. Ron takes us on a nostalgic journey as he revisits his association with horses like Analie, Bletchingly, Emancipation, Dalmacia, Marscay, Sir Dapper, Rory's Jester, Marauding, Kingston Town, and Baguette- a true galaxy of stars. The former great jockey was involved in twelve race falls during three decades in the saddle. When it comes to injury he regards himself as one of the lucky ones. From the outset of his riding career Ron harboured an ambition to ride overseas. He looks back on three memorable stints with champion Irish trainer John Oxx. Ron talks of the devastating loss in 2017 of Margaret, his wife of 45 years. His horses helped him through a difficult time. He talks of children Shawn, Trent and Annabel and of his four grandchildren. Ron looks at his future direction. This is a wonderful trip down memory lane with a giant of Australian racing.

The Guarani-Kaiowá are the people of Mato Grosso do Sul, a Central-West region of Brazil. It translates as “Thick Forest of the South", and as the name suggests, nature has protected the Guarani-Kaiowá and their culture from colonization. Particularly, the ancient tradition of chicha making—a sacred white corn drink that can also be fermented. The Guarani-Kaiowá believe that if they stop making chicha, the world will end. Today, this thick forest has been turned into a vast monoculture of soy plantations, and the Guarani-Kaiowá have nowhere to go and continue their ancestral cultural practices. Perhaps the end of the world is closer than ever. Join us on a fermentation journey with Paula Neubauer, a Brazilian award-winning chef and educator, as we explore the complexity of sacred fermented chicha and the fascinating people who make it. Welcome to “The End of Many Worlds”, the third episode of The World in a Pickle, Ferment Radio's mini-series focused on understanding geopolitical complexities through fermented foods.

Keeper Of The Greens segment of The Golfing Greenkeeper Podcast is brought to you by John Deere Golf. When you work where others play, you need a partner you can trust to keep your course in perfect condition. Find your nearest John Deere dealer at deere.com.au Superintendent of Mudgee Golf Club, Jason Seis, is a 5th generation farmer from the local Mudgee/Gulgong region of NSW. Knowing what farming life was all about and being a golfer as a kid, Jason took an opportunity for some work experience at Mudgee Golf Club during his later school years. It was at this time that he found a liking to greenkeeping and what it was all about. Fast forward to finishing school and Jason decided that he didn't want to work on the family farm but instead work as a greenkeeper. Without an apprenticeship available at the time, Jason was committed to his decision and put himself through the 1st year of greenkeeping at TAFE until he finally landed his apprenticeship at Mudgee Golf Club. After completing his apprenticeship Jason was soon on a path to an Assistant Superintendents role away from the local Mudgee area for a few years before the family farm would soon come calling. Moving back home and working on the family farm for nearly 10 years, an opportunity arose with a vacant position of Superintendent at Mudgee Golf Club and this time it was the passion of greenkeeping that came calling. Come for a journey with Jason and I as he gives us an insight into rural country life and greenkeeping in the Central West of NSW where it's hot and dusty, and 18 hole golf courses are separated by hours instead of minutes. A teenage Julie Eggerling drove her grandfather to the races one day and that was it, she was hooked. Julie has owned many horses , bred a lot of her own and bought others in as ready to race horses. She gets joy from all of them. Working in the stables and being hands on every day sets Julie apart from most owners, and she loves that she still gets to nurture the connection with horses she's always had. Julie is the owners rep on the Central West committee and played an instrumental role in resurrecting the now very successful Alpha Jockey Club. Julie also makes a mean corn meat sandwich. Alexandra MacAlpine, better known as Xan, is the founder and sole operator of The Social Herd, a creative hub she runs from home in the Central West of New South Wales. Living on a mixed farm with her husband Alex, Xan draws inspiration from her rural surroundings and Alex's insights into marketing products to farmers. With a background in design and photography from the University of Technology in Sydney, Xan initially pursued a career in marketing and communications. It wasn't until 2020 that she combined her skills and passion for photography by starting The Social Herd. Through her business, Xan collaborates with rural-based enterprises, offering strategic and creative marketing solutions. The best part for Xan is the opportunity to pick up her camera again and capture the essence of rural life. Xan's photography is authentic, showcasing everyday individuals at work, including her husband Alex on their property. She uses a mix of ground and aerial shots, often employing a drone to capture dynamic images. Her limited-edition prints, with only 25 copies each, are intended to be timeless and unique. Each day presents new opportunities for Xan to capture the rural beauty and hardworking spirit of her community. Alexandra shares how her daily life deeply influences her photography. She discusses the importance of showcasing women in agriculture, her journey from studying design and photography to finding her niche in rural landscapes, and the challenges and joys of working with livestock. She also highlights how her work promotes understanding between rural and urban communities and reflects on the evolving role of photography in telling authentic stories of the land. Her insights are a testament to the power of photography in capturing the timeless beauty of rural Australia and its hardworking people. I hope you enjoy the show! St Louis loves fried chicken. It's a lesson John Perkins learned years ago when he held a pop-up for a Southern concept that would eventually inspire Juniper. Last year he closed Juniper, the acclaimed Central West end restaurant and transitioned it to Sunday Best. Walking inside the restaurant, the changes might be subtle, but it's meant to be a more casual spot with the opportunity to expand and grow across the region. It's not a change John made lightly, but it was one initiated by necessity. From starting off with underground pop-ups to the changing restaurant business and the perspective he's gained over the years, we get candid in this week's episode.

Jillian Kilby is not afraid of the big decisions. As an engineer and farmer's daughter from Coonamble, in the central west of New South Wales, Jillian has leant on her rural values right through her career. This courage has seen her go against the grain most of her life and bounce from Coonamble to Sydney to Walgett to Silicon Valley and back to the Central West. Now she's breathing new life into country heritage buildings while helping regional start-ups increase their capability, capacity and confidence because she knows all too well how lonely a road it can be starting a small business in the bush. It takes a certain level of guts to dig deep and blow up your life and Jillian has done it not once, but twice on an extraordinary scale.

This week is episode 228 of the Meet St. Louis podcast. For nearly five years, we've brought you episodes showcasing the best of our city and region. A city with a food and drink scene that continues to grow. All the way back in episode 3, we took you inside Vicia, the vegetable-forward restaurant in the Central West, garnering national attention. That attention hasn't changed. The restaurant continues to receive major recognition but what has changed is the growth for Tara and Michael Gallina with their restaurant group, Take Root Hospitality. The husband and wife duo are joined by culinary director and partner Aaron Martinez. Aaron joined us on the podcast this week to talk about the growth of not just Vicia, but the other restaurants the team has now opened, including Bistro La Florisian, Winslows Table and Taqueria Morita, which is inspired by his own Mexican heritage and time living and working in California. We talk about the email that brought him to St. Louis, the change in work-life balance in his role and his advice for young chiefs.

Welcome to our bonus episode where you can Ask Us Anything. There are so many questions that arise when you become pregnant and approach birth and amongst all that excitement and love, it's totally normal to feel overwhelmed and nervous. So that's why we created our Ask Us Anything events on Instagram, and share them now in our podcast. Today you will hear my conversation with She Births® Educator, Danielle Syme. Danielle is a qualified midwife with over 30 years experience. She works as the team leader of a busy Midwifery Group Practice in Orange, Central West of NSW. As a mother of three, she is also an IRON MAN and loves swimming, walking her dog and being in nature. She is extremely passionate about Woman centered care - making sure mums get what they want. And also spontaneous labour. She loves witnessing the transformation that She Births® couples go through after attending the Weekend Course. She sees firsthand how important quality childbirth education is for an empowering birth experience. We talk about: + The differences she sees when women are educated + How to refuse an induction and what it means + Preventing tearing and perineal damage + Movement and diet during pregnancy + The best stories to listen to in the lead up to birth + Plus, is the cascade of intervention BS I hope you enjoy it and we will see you at a She Births® course soon either with Danielle in Orange or any of our other locations, or online.
