Today’s show is the first of a two-part interview with Sonia Richards where she and Peter Mabbutt explore the role of hypnotherapy in childbirth and look at the naissance of Hypnobirthing in the UK. They explore the rise in the use of Caesarean section and why our current litigatious climate is possibly driving this. Peter and Sonia also delve into the natural birth vs medicalised birth debate and highlight the role of oxytocin and the effect that medicalised birth has on bonding and the risk of autism. The often overlooked link between traumatic birth and PTSD and vicarious PTSD in the non-birth parent is explored, before Sonia and Peter turn their attention on the Duchess of Cambridge’s use of hypnotherapy in childbirth, and how this has stimulated a welcome trend in celebrities opting for more natural approaches to birth.
