“The United Nations was not created in order to deliver us to heaven, but in order to save us from hell.” - Dag Hammarskjöld.“To Save Us From Hell” is a new weekly news and analysis podcast about the UN. Mark Leon Goldberg, a veteran global affairs journalist and editor of the news outlets UN Dispatch and Global Dispatches, and Anjali Dayal, a political science professor and author at Fordham University, co-host the show. They join us on Making Peace Visible to explain the significance of the UN today, especially when it comes to deescalating conflicts and laying the groundwork for peace. Goldberg and Dayal's intense focus on the UN and its work comes at a time when the world's focus on the institution seems to be diminishing, while violent conflicts are increasing. We also have global crises like climate change, infectious disease, and refugees. The one global institution designated to deal with problems at that scale is the UN. So what's missing from mainstream news coverage of the UN, and can it save us from hell?!Subscribe to “To Save Us from Hell” at globaldispatches.org. Music in this episode by Blue Dot Sessions, Siddhartha Corsus, and SFmusic. Western media has often referred to India as the world's largest democracy. But during the last decade, the world has witnessed the decline of many democratic institutions in India. In a recent Time Magazine article our guest Suchitra Vijayan questions whether India can still be called a democracy.Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government have been especially harsh towards critics of the regime, including journalists. Journalists who have criticized the government have been harassed, detained, imprisoned, and even murdered. Meanwhile, 75% or more of news organizations are now owned by 4 or 5 large corporations, all led by allies of Modi. As you'll hear in this episode, today's Indian government uses complicit media outlets as a weapon against non-violent descent. Suchitra Vijayan is a journalist and attorney based in New York City. Her new book, How Long Can the Moon be Caged? co-authored with Francesca Recchia, tells the stories of political prisoners in India today, including artists, activists, academics, and journalists. Vijayan is also the founder and executive director of the Polis Project, a journalism and research organization focused on authoritarianism and state oppression. She was born and raised in Madras, also known as Chennai, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Read Vijayan's reporting in The Nation about the government's targeting of Kashmir's free press.Something we didn't have time to include in this episode is the legacy of journalism and activism in Suchitra Vijayan's family. That includes her grandfather, who took part in India's freedom struggle – and became one of the new country's first political prisoners. You can find that story and more in our newsletter, which publishes on Thursday, November 9th. To sign up, go to warstoriespeacestories.org/contact. If you're reading this after that day, email us at info@warstoriespeacestories.org, and we'll be happy to forward it to you. Making Peace Visible is produced by Andrea Muraskin. Our host is Jamil Simon.Listen to a recent interview with Jamil on the podcast This is My Silver Lining: Learning to Walk in the Shoes of Another:  a Prayer for Peace with Documentary Filmmaker and Podcaster Jamil Simon.. The New York-born son of Iraqi Jewish immigrants, Jamil's curiosity about the world had him traveling independently from the age of 15. In this interview, Jamil talks about discovering his love for film and photography, working on communications projects in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, and developing the War Stories Peace Stories project – including this podcast – to illuminate peace efforts. Plus, twists and turns along the way, including a stint as a taxi driver in Boston. In this episode of the NB Publishers Podcast we hear John Maytham in conversation with Finuala Dowling about her new novel, The Man Who Loved Crocodile Tamers. The interview was recorded at the book launch at Exclusive Books, V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. More about the book: Gina knows hardly anything about her father apart from the fact that he was once engaged to Koringa, a crocodile tamer, and that he is buried in an unmarked grave. In between shifts at a call centre, with Doubt always looking over her shoulder, she works on a novel about him, ultimately drawing back the curtain on a complex, sad but also funny and enchanting life. The Man Who Loved Crocodile Tamers is a story about love, family, fear and the banishing of fear: a celebration of strong women and a defence of a ‘nervous' man. According to an article in Neuropsychobiology entitled “Exercise and Mental Health: Many Reasons to Move”Neurodegenerative diseases become more prevalent as individuals age and, therefore, represent a serious issue for the healthcare system. Since inactivity is the number one risk factor for many diseases, physical activity has become an emerging topic of interest for many investigators. Exercise might act as an efficient and low-cost adjunctive factor in the treatment and prevention of age-related neurodegenerative processes [1, 2] . Clinical evidence has demonstrated that exercise has a positive relationship with the outcome of different mental diseases, such as depression, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, improving not only patients' quality of life but the disease itself [7–9] . Indeed, exercise is related to enhanced cognitive functioning and brain plasticity [10, 11] I think we can all agree that we feel better after a good workout but lately, I've been too busy to work out. I've been sitting at my computer cranking out scripts and recording podcasts and I've been building up a lot of tension in my shoulders, neck, and back. Therefore, I decided in this last episode of Mental Health Wednesday that I would do some stretching exercises. With minimal Security, Bobby Kennedy left the podium and proceeded to exit the hotel through a kitchen pantry when he was shot in the head and back multiple times.Bobby Kennedy died in the Good Samaritan Hospital 26 hours later.A Jordanian Immigrant, Sirhan-Sirhan, angry over RFK's position on Palestine, was wrestled to the ground at the time of the shooting, a smoking gun in his hand, and the LAPD had an open and shut case. But did they? From the first moments after the shooting, evidence of Sirhan-Sirhan's connection with shady hypnosis programs and the bizarre letters found at his home, combined with the fact that he claimed to have no memory of either the shooting or writing the inflammatory letters, caused many to speculate that the assassin had acted under some kind of mind control. And this is not the only focus of the conspiracy theories to arise around the RFK killing. Accounts of a second gun, extra bullets, destroyed evidence, and deep state cover-up began to pile up and persist to this day. So join Renegade Files and dive into one the most tragic and least understood events of the Space Age American Experience: The Bobby Kennedy Assassination.Diagram of the “Pantry” (labeled “Serving Kitchen” in this drawing). And the ancient Egyptians themselves described an advanced civilization which predated their own by tens of thousands of years. Is it possible that a far-advanced civilization existed which possessed high technology that could account for the astounding workmanship and fabrication of these stone objects? Objects so precise, enormous, and alternately delicate, that we could scarcely reproduce them even today. And if such an advanced civilization did exist, what happened to them?Travel with Lex Gordon on another adventure back in time to Ancient Egypt for Part 2 of our Egypt Series and explore the evidence for Ancient Advanced Technology.Merchandise https://www.bonfire.com/store/renegade-files/Patreon https://www.patreon.com/renegadefilesWebsite http://therenegadefiles.comYou can help Renegade Files stay Free and Ad-Free by becoming a member of the RFA (the Renegade Files Agency) on Patreon. We think of citizenship as a binary category: you're either a citizen or you're not. But the levels of membership can be complex. Refugees and asylum seekers often find that the criteria for acceptance change, as states devise rationales to exclude them. Three Weatherhead Center sociologists reveal the motivations behind various immigration policies, from the colonial past to the present, and discuss the ethics and impact of open borders. In this episode, Elke Winter explains the different pathways to citizenship, not only for “economic immigrants” but also for refugees and asylum seekers. From an historical perspective, Anna Skarpelis reminds us that some groups have had citizenship imposed on them, in the case of territorial annexation. In the United States, asylum and immigration laws seem to change with each new administration, and Talia Shiff documents some of the impact of the recent changes during the Trump administration. After World War II, the UN Declaration of Human Rights established that all human beings have the right to basic food, shelter, and security, and the right to freedom of movement—even if they cannot access these rights in their own countries. But nations have likely always strayed from these humanitarian values as their geopolitical goals change. Our scholars show how strategic interests and even race come into play, unofficially, to drive prevailing immigration policies. Finally, our scholars delve into the philosophical and ethical context for having more open borders and touch on the economic impact of immigration. On a philosophical level, they raise the questions: What do we owe others? Can a nation redress its colonial legacy through immigration policy? Do developed nations have a moral obligation to those in poorer regions who are trying to find a secure home? With an estimated eighty million people on Earth in flux and looking for permanent settlement, our scholars stress that no single country can resolve this crisis on its own. Host:Erin Goodman, Director, Weatherhead Scholars Program.Guests:Talia Shiff, Affiliate, Weatherhead Research Cluster on Comparative Inequality and Inclusion.
